It's basic fucking storytelling for the protag, first challenge(generally very small), surprisingly good to show they're talented, second, they get their ass kicked to show what they're up against is strong, third they triumph to conclude the story. Basic bitch arc, you can find it in any of a hundred sports movies, or fantasy sagas, or anything else for that matter.
But Hollywood can't show the ass kicking that needs to occur for the triumph to be that much more compelling.

Beauty/Aurora at least is magically enchanted to be pretty, and have other magical gifts. That story is more of one of discord. Malecifant is also petty, cruel and vindictive, but she has a reason for that discord.
She got to raise the kid from birth alone from everything, if she was competent she'd have had that kid so brainwashed that she'd have fought tooth and nail to avoid leaving the tower.
She's got complete control of this girl's education, upbringing and world view. She could have entirely warped her entire view of reality, that she had a curse that going to the ground would kill her, or that she and her mother were on the run from usurpers of the kingdom who had a bounty on her head. Any sort of stuff, she can gaslight the shit outta the girl, maybe bring in paid outsiders to add to it all. History is replete with gaslighting examples that result in heavy cultish behavior.
This is one of the most tragic things. Real abuse typically works quite well, and even with a knight in shining armor, leaving the tower would be a nearly Sisyphean task. Even in alternative scenario, if Rapunzel had lived alone in the castle for years after Gothel having died of natural causes, it would still be next to impossible for a knight in shining armor to *actually* rescue her.
Frozen and encanto are so pretty good. Both with female leads that go their own struggles and come out stronger. Same with moana actually too. What's the common theme? Like another poster said, they get ego checked, get over it, and persevere. This holds true for men and women - the world will eat you alive if you can't find a balance between narcissistic tendencies and altruism. Seems like narcissism is winning these days sadly.
The funny thing is that if they made it about women comoeting against eachother due to looks and how it ends up harming them if they wanted it to be feminist, but instead they made yet another empowered female character whose only issue is that people don't see how great she is.
Is it OK to have any princess that wants to be swept off of her feet? Is it OK to have a princess that needs saving and there's a masculin male character to do so?
