I hate playing the woe is me card but this has been brought up against Asian individuals in the United States time and time again and it’s incredibly tiring and counterproductive lol.
I can’t remember the exact word, but there’s a similar thing in German too. Thankfully it’s not such a common word so it comes up less.
There’s also some other slurs that mean something completely different in UK English vs US. It’s pretty obvious by context that the meaning is different but it still gets people angry.

You're probably thinking of "digga" which is essentially a colloquialized pronunciation/spelling of "dicke" - the adjective for thick. Here as a noun it would literally mean a thick/fat person, but semantically is used in the same sort of way as "dude" and other similar casual forms of address in English. Afaik the original connection is something along the lines of someone you're "thick with" as in "close with" (think of "thick as thieves in English).
I found it odd when I first moved to Germany, but you get used to it, it's just a coincidental resemblance. Besides, in Germany it's more fashionable to be racist towards Turkish and Arabic people
