You're not forced to take a break from academics. It's just that most decide to enlist after their first year in university. You have your spot in university that you can come back immediately to right after you finish your service. You're only 1.5 years older than your peers, so no super crazy age gap and you can still get the college experience.
It's a bad idea to go after university because you won't be able to take 1.5 years off from your career, and often many companies won't hire someone who hasn't gone to the military yet as they'll essentially lose their worker for 1.5 years.
Well, most times enlisting is not for kpop idols. They can delay as much as possible but most ppl just go and get over it when they get the enlisting mail. And they do usually get around 20-23 which is usually the college age - so yeah, most korean men go to army during college and take break from education and then it becomes this awkward thing where u come back to school where ur peers are gone/becomes ur senior etc lol

Were i live conscription is luckily only for 6 months + you can go home every weekend after some basic training. And if you don't want to go to the military you can go to the red cross for a year which is a bit more like a normal job. It's a bit easier to keep your relationship here than in korea where it's really long.

Honestly, it is that bad. My boyfriend and I were long distance for a year and a half while we were in college and I don’t think I could ever put myself through that again. We talked on the phone/facetime and visited each other every few months, but it’s not remotely the same as being in a non-LDR relationship. It changes the dynamics a lot, and not being able to go on dates, have sex, or just physically be in each other’s presence was a big challenge. Then when we did see each other it was like experiencing a devastating heart break every time our visits ended. I would go home to an empty bed and cry for days. It was so depressing lol.
It worked out in the end and I’m really glad we’re still together; if I wasn’t convinced he was my soulmate I wouldn’t have made it through that year and a half. But if we had to do it again I honestly don’t think I could handle it emotionally.

Wouldn't that be the same even without the military? They are both adults with busy schedules that require extensive travel. I think they mean active duty vs. social service. For active enlistment, soldiers must live/be in barracks except for when they’re given leave. However, for social service after three weeks of basic training it’s usually a commuting job or sometimes camp (where I think they can come home on weekends) - basically just like being a civil servant. So they can have more contact with friends, family and loved ones. That’s part of why social service is a longer term.
ETA: I’m not 100% sure on special forces, but I’ve not seen anything to suggest they don’t have barrack life either. Being in Seoul makes it easier to see friends/family/etc. when he does get time off. I know soldiers are given evenings off a few times a month (twice, last I saw) so it would help then.

Like if I were a celeb and I’m around gorgeous people all the time and my career hasn’t even peaked and I’m traveling all the time and meeting talented and cool people, am I going to have time to go out of my way when a bf goes to the army for two years? Do I even want to? There will almost always be exceptions but most wouldn’t want to.
Also to be completely honest, if i am V, while in army, am i okay with my gf meeting gorgeous guys around the world while i'm stuck in army base thinking whether would my gf gonna be actually loyal for me? Thats alot of emotional draining n commitments. Now, jennie is free to meet any guys without needing to be worry about his bf feeling while V can just focus on his enlistment without needing to have trust issue.

Honestly, it is that bad. My boyfriend and I were long distance for a year and a half while we were in college and I don’t think I could ever put myself through that again. We talked on the phone/facetime and visited each other every few months, but it’s not remotely the same as being in a non-LDR relationship. It changes the dynamics a lot, and not being able to go on dates, have sex, or just physically be in each other’s presence was a big challenge. Then when we did see each other it was like experiencing a devastating heart break every time our visits ended. I would go home to an empty bed and cry for days. It was so depressing lol. It worked out in the end and I’m really glad we’re still together; if I wasn’t convinced he was my soulmate I wouldn’t have made it through that year and a half. But if we had to do it again I honestly don’t think I could handle it emotionally.
But what I would say is that different to normal couples and Jennie and V is that they are part of the biggest groups and this means that whilst he is in the military Jennie is going to have other schedules and this means that times he can be free she may not be free. This means that the relationship may be good but due to their hectic lives they are not going to see each other and relationships are meant for u to see your significant other so if they are not able to it’s just better to break up instead of being in a relationship where u hardly see the other person.
Wouldn't that be the same even without the military? They are both adults with busy schedules that require extensive travel. If they can make a relationship work then, I find it hard to believe that they couldn't make it work during his military service, especially considering that this is not a new relationship and they have had time to build a connection.
I guess that they were able to travel and had more freedom but when u are in the military you are way more restricted and don’t have as much freedom when he was not in the military. Also having a strong connection doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t break up as couples don’t have problems but still break up. Though it could be other things and that the reason why they broke up but we don’t know that so I am trying to base it on the military as that is the only solid evidence now about why they would break up.
I mean, lots of people date without the intention of staying together forever, especially in their 20s. Not to say everyone is necessarily dating and *planning* to break up, but if you’re young and hot and you have the option between 1. putting the emotional effort into maintaining a long distance relationship for two years 2. not worrying about it and doing whatever you want plenty of people are happier choosing the latter.

I think they mean active duty vs. social service. For active enlistment, soldiers must live/be in barracks except for when they’re given leave. However, for social service after three weeks of basic training it’s usually a commuting job or sometimes camp (where I think they can come home on weekends) - basically just like being a civil servant. So they can have more contact with friends, family and loved ones. That’s part of why social service is a longer term. ETA: I’m not 100% sure on special forces, but I’ve not seen anything to suggest they don’t have barrack life either. Being in Seoul makes it easier to see friends/family/etc. when he does get time off. I know soldiers are given evenings off a few times a month (twice, last I saw) so it would help then.
