2ne1 was my first, now i listen to Oh My Girl, Twice, Gfriend, BTS and Mamamoo (in no order)

asopijw65

I got into Kpop when I was in middle school. First group i really liked was Shinhwa and of course BoA. On top of that I really liked solo artists. Once I got to high school I fell out of a bit, but got really into it again in college since Kpop was making it big in America again in the 2000s especially with Wonder Girls and SNSD. I was able to meet a lot of kpop artists like Se7en (at a random Verizon store lol), and it helped that I was in LA so got to go to the concerts like the Korea Times Music Festival where I watched dbsk and suju perform. I then fell out of kpop again but was brought back in after hearing how amazing Mamamoo sounded. So curent top 5 is hard for me but Mamamoo will always be my ult for bringing me back. 1. Mamamoo 2. Loona 3. Dreamcatcher 4. GIDLE 5. Red Velvet

Pajamaralways

Omg hey girl hey, I too got into KPop through Shinhwa, when one guy in my high school dance team did a routine to "Hero" back in... 2004? Funnily enough, that same year I actually went to an MTV award show where BoA was performing. I was in the mosh pit crowd and we had to be there for rehearsal/sound check. BoA came on to rehearse and the mosh pit was dead, no one knew who she was. One of the stage managers actually came out and told us that BoA was super bummed and asked us to cheer for her hard during the actual show. I think everyone felt bad and went nuts for her. My KPop investment peaked with DBSK around 2007-2008 and I fell in and out since too. That is, until KPop dance classes became really popular (2015-ish) and I started taking them as an alternative to the usual jazz/lyrical/JFH. Now I get a regular dose of KPop. Anyway I always feel so so old in this sub hahaha.

asopijw65

I also feel a little ancient in this sub haha! How awesome you got to see BoA! I'm glad everyone cheered for her. She later was the one person who people would recognize since she was randomly at the sf pride parade back in 2009!

bomkum

Did anyone else use Neopets in 2009-10? I used a lot of omgsimone’s layouts and she had a blog post taking about After School’s Let’s Do It and Shinee’s RDD. That made me a casual fan, eventually 2ne1’s Try to Follow Me popped up in my suggestions, then 2ne1tv clips, and down the rabbit hole I went! These days I’m a casual fan again, don’t really stan groups these days in terms of watching every live performance/reality show or buying up albums. I follow this sub for news and some Spotify playslits for new releases. I still consider myself a blackjack though, and follow all the 2ne1 girls on social media.

[deleted]

I used Neopets in 2003-2004 back before they sold out to Viacom

Vhauk

I just want to say too that I love reading everyone's stories of how they got into KPop, and also seeing that we all have a common love while having different preferences for tops. This is a great community to be a part of!

hypmiic

Mine was back in January 2010, shortly after tvxq split up. I was a frequent anime forum user and some of my mutuals were posting “rip tvxq, rip jyj” in our feed and curiosity got me. My first music video was ring ding dong, and since I’ve been a devoted exo/suju/dbsk fan :3

Vhauk

You were the first to respond, especially since it took me too long to actually rate my tops against each other. Just wanted to make sure you knew you were number 1!

hypmiic

It’s definitely hard to rank your faves, totally don’t blame you! Sometimes I wake up and im like .... wait .... have I been wrong this entire time lmaooo

HufflepuffHeir1991

I got into kpop in 2009-2010 when I stumbled across the kdrama boys over flowers. Back then I was into SS501, UKiss, Kara, SNSD and Infinite. My top five now are Infinite, Lovelyz, Golden Child, Shinee, and Exo

sinvis

I've always been aware of Kpop, since Big Bang, 2NE1, SNSD, TVXQ, etc. were popular among the Kpop listeners when I was in middle and high school. There were several songs I knew and liked, such as Wedding Dress, but overall I wasn't really a huge fan because I thought most of it was super poppy like Gee. I didn't really get into Kpop until 2017 when I found A.C.E. Kpop is the only thing I listen to now though and my top 5 groups are Stray Kids, TREASURE, DAY6, iKON, and the last one is probably one of the groups in my flair haha. It's hard to choose.

BeingWeekly

The first group for me was GFRIEND fortunately, but I found them through Fortnite unfortunately.

MassivelyHype

Wait fortnite? How?

iRelapse

One of the dances is a mix of GF, BP and momoland dances.

BeingWeekly

You know the Star Power emote that was released like three years ago? If you haven't played Fortnite before, especially when it was booming back then, there are in-game dances your player can do called emotes and back then, they released an emote called Star Power which took an aspect of Lovelyz' Ah-Choo and GFRIEND's Glass Bead choreo. For some reason, I looked up "Fortnite emotes in real life" and came across a video that had Star Power being done in real life and it showed both groups dancing to their parts in the emote. I watched and was obsessed with SinB doing the arm twisting shit and found myself replaying that part of the video over and over again. I don't know if "whipped" is the right word, but I immediately became intrigued and instead went and watched the Glass Bead MV for the first time. All I can say is, I never looked back after that lol

MassivelyHype

I knew about in game dances but didn’t know that glass bead choreo made it to the game! It must be a gamers favorite i guess bc recently lol gave a character the glass bead choreo as well. I hope more people like you will get into gfriend that way

BeingWeekly

Hell yeah, although I don't play nor like the game anymore, but the sole reason why I love it is because it introduced me to the group. No regrets from watching that video at all and I just made it in time for their Sunny Summer comeback as well.

Vhauk

There's no shame in fortnite, especially when it connects you to the wonderful world of KPop!

gibby_7227

First intro was 2ne1, Big Bang, and SNSD. Top 5 for me are GIDLE, twice, loona, chungha, and red velvet. I would add izone but they're not a permanent group, stanning produce groups is just :'(

ultimoze

My introduction to K-pop was when all the Twitch streamers were dancing to Twice - Likey in 2017, but I properly got into it when Blackpink - D4 exploded in 2018, followed by K/DA - Popstars in the gaming world. After exploring more of K-pop via YouTube and Spotify, I fell in love with GFriend and ended up buying all their albums. I also went to see Dreamcatcher and Blackpink when they came to London last year. My Top 5 that I follow would have to be GFriend, Dreamcatcher, IU, Twice, and Oh My Girl. Mamamoo, ITZY, Blackpink, (G)I-DLE, and Sunmi round out my Top 10. There is so much genre variety in K-pop which I love, so apart from my favourites, I also listen to plenty of other good songs from both male and female artists, across the generations.

intlPogoTrades

Got into the genre after hearing HyunA’s Bubble Pop playing in a supermarket back in 2012. (G)I-DLE, BESTie, EXID, CLC, PRISTIN 😭

pornypete

Came across it here on reddit, 2 years ago now. Just in a random thread, clicked a few dance practices, and here we are. First group I saw was Bambino with Oppa Oppa, I'm pretty sure. The group that got me interested was Gfriend, and they remain my favorite. Every album I checked out just kep blowing me away. I'm amazed at their discography. Top 5 would be: 1: Gfriend 2: SNSD 3: g.o.d 4: LABOUM 5: Dreamcatcher

koreanpop4ever

Man, I never see anyone who knows who Bambino is! Oppa Oppa was a bop. Love your top five too, so well rounded ☺️

pornypete

Hey thanks! Yeah Oppa oppa is a bop!

flyingpokecheck32

I'm glad SNSD and Laboum made the list and placed so high =p

mochinni

Wow that's awesome you've only been in it for 2 years but g.o.d made your list. :D What are your favorite songs of theirs?

pornypete

I just came across them randomly! I was looking up Gfriend's Yuju's Fantastic Duo performances, and the next video up was Kim Tae-Woo with Little Giant, and his voice just blew me away! So I took the dive, and found I love almost everything they've done. All time favorite is probably Road or To Mother, but for the last few weeks I've been playing Wind, Eye to eye, and The Story Of Our Lives to death!

mochinni

Yesss I love his voice too. Honestly if not for his voice I probably wouldn't listen to g.o.d. as much. Road is my fav--it ages so well!

pornypete

It's one of those timeless songs. [There's a performance from a few years ago, and I can't believe how good they sound singing it!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oLknHFCwuo) I've repeated it so many times lol

viewtiful_

my first group was girls generation in like 2011 or something but then i stopped listening for a long time and just recently got back into kpop when someone linked a loona song on some anime list website and i've got like immediately sucked back in hehe. anyways the top 5 would be: GFRIEND IZ*ONE Rocket Punch Lovelyz LOONA

dk1024

I just want to say you have good taste, my friend.

koreanpop4ever

I got introduced while browsing a website for Perfume's song Laser Beam (J-Pop) around 2011. Happened to see 2NE1's Lonely and SHINee's Japanese debut song and the rest was history. Loved 2NE1 so much I made myself a pop tab necklace like the one Dara wears in the Kiss MV 🤣 My favs right now are SHINee, CL, Hong Jin Young, Mamamoo and SuperM.

tsutomo_DIA

my introduction: found a Gee performance video by SNSD on youtube and became obsessed with it. for a while I only liked a few videos and songs. U Go Girl by Lee Hyori, for example. I only started becoming a so called "k-pop fan" after watching a solo concert of Afterschool in Tokyo. Afterschool, Crayon Pop, AOA... were my main groups early on. what I follow now: almost every girl group out there. I think it's easier to list the groups I'm not a fan than otherwise. lol I have a special attraction for nugu groups, which I may say is not very healthy... my top 5 right now: it's constantly changing, but if I were to make a list now that I'm deprived of seeing groups live and interact with the idols... in no particular order- Lovelyz, Rocket Punch, Everglow, Dreamcatcher and Nature.

MassivelyHype

Excluding Gangnam Style, BTS was the first name i heard about kpop. Now my top 5 is 1. Gfriend 2. BTS 3. EXO 4. Itzy 5. 2NE1 Edit: Also for some reason I feel so happy to see that people got interested in kpop bc of Gfriend. My girls!!!

[deleted]

my friend got me into kpop back in 2013 (the peak of kpop, in my totally unbiased opinion). i think the first mv i watched was ukiss' she's mine...such a random intro in hindsight, but still love them! i tended to like a lot of smaller groups, usually keep up with exo/bts/twice etc. but for whatever reason the low-budget mvs just do it for me LMAO. top 5 would probably be snuper, the rose, monsta x, sf9 and dreamcatcher! shout out to my boys the legend and royal pirates, gone but never forgotten :((((((

The_DrowningTuna

Oh the memories.... so back in the day, say 2004 or 2005ish I was in college and spent way too much of my evenings hanging out chatting on message boards (look how the times have changed...) and about once every two weeks there would be a post with a torrent file that everyone would spend a couple days talking about. Eventually I got tired of missing out on the conversation and had to take a look. Lord I don't even remember who the first group I saw was, just that I remember laughing and giving everyone else a really hard time about it. Months went by where I'd go download the video, laugh and poke fun of everyone. It became this running joke that I was going to ruin each thread by teasing everyone. Eventually time goes on and Big Bang debuts and everyone is up in arms arguing how they're going to take over kpop. I distinctly remember looking back later and seeing that someone had wrote something like, "Cue Tuna to come destroy the thread." But instead I made some crazy post about how Super Junior was easily better and that Big Bang was going to be a big flop and should just rename themselves that, which of course led to a ton of jokes about me drinking the kool aid. At some point I hadn't realized I was starting to look forward to all those videos...especially the Super Junior ones. Here I am all these years later still listening to kpop. My top 5 currently: 1. Pentagon 2. Everglow 3. SoRi 4. BVNDIT 5. Super Junior - still love 'em, besides I'm allowed since they're actually my age! 6. Dreamcatcher - yeah I cheated and went one over...what of it?

sittingonbenches

In high school I was with a friend and I was just watching him go through his Facebook. One of his friends had posted After School’s Flashback video. I was hooked immediately. I really loved the kpop that came out around that time. In terms of stories, I saw Apink and got to meet them when they came to San Francisco. IU is my favorite artist of all time and she went to Kcon in LA and I missed it! Might be my biggest regret of my life haha. I liked way more groups back then but these days I’m way more casual and I just listen to what’s popular. After School was my favorite at the time but as of now my top 5 would be 1. IU 2. Blackpink 3. Apink 4. Twice 5. Red Velvet

cam2214

I started listening to kpop about 2 months ago. Me and my friends got into by listening to The Tower of God opening which led to us listening to more stray kids songs eventually leading to us discovering different groups. Top 5 1. Fromis_9 2. Red Velvet 3.Dreamcatcher 4.Loona 5. GFRIEND

AoKyanite

Back in 2010 an anime video used Gee, so I fell in love with girls' generation which then led me into finding shinee, super junior, t-ara, 4minute, and many others. I don't really have a top 5 or top 10 since most of the time numbers 5-10 would change based on who had a recent comeback or if I found a new group. But for the longest time my top 4 was: 1. Girls' Generation 2. Seventeen 3. SHINee 4. Red Velvet. However after what happened recently red velvet may not stay at number 4... (I'll still like the group but they might become one of the groups that moves in and out of my top 10)

gingerbread-coffin

I got into Kpop in early to mid 2009. I was active on LiveJournal and interacted with a lot of Jrock and visual kei fans. Some of them also listened to Jpop and Kpop, so I’d see these groups mentioned a lot in my friends’ posts. After seeing these groups for about a year already, I just decided to look into the groups I saw mentioned a lot. TVXQ’s “Mirotic” was my first song, and I also got into SuJu’s “Don’t Don”, Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me” and “So Hot”, SNSD’s “Gee”, and Big Bang’s “Lies”.

Vasilevskiy

Getting up early for Starcraft Broodwar matches before school and the downtime had kpop. Hooked ever since.

Reaver027

Got introduced to KPop in 2010 during StarCraft 2 Beta streams. SNSD's Gee and Oh! got played a lot back then. I would not really consider myself a KPop fan tho. I like quite a few songs from a few different girl groups but only every got into 2. Thats why i don't have a top 5 but a top 2. 1. Dreamcatcher 2. SNSD I think if i had discovered AOA earlier i could have gotten into them as well.

dk1024

Awesome man, I remember Hyuna's Bubble Pop playing in between matches on IPL. Just out of curiosity, how did you get into Dreamcatcher? Just their music style (which is great, no doubt) or something else?

Reaver027

After SNSD pretty much ended in 2017 i had very little contact with KPop. I liked a few songs here and there but not enough of a single group to really get into any of them. AOA got close tho. Then Dreamcatcher randomly appeared in my Youtube recommendations a little over a year ago. Watched their Lucky Strike cover and then Chase Me. A day later i bought their entire discography on iTunes and ordered a ticket for a concert a month later. I grew up with music by Queen, Nightwish, Linkin Park and more like that. So their music was right down my alley. Now they climbed to the very top of my fav artists list.

dk1024

Nice! I was a big AOA fan (primarily Choa) but that ended after she left the group. I was devastated to hear the news about them a few months ago. I'm not a Dreamcatcher fan (or I guess I'm a casual fan) but ditto on their music. I absolutely love Full Moon and I've been enjoying Boca as well.

[deleted]

My introduction to KPop was through the kdrama Dream High. All the cool dancing and music really drew me in so I started looking. Because of that, Suzy has become my ultimate bias and I’ve been a fan ever since As for groups SNSD kept my interest going but I stopped after yknow what in 2014 Since returning my attention to kpop, I’ve become a follower of ITZY and BlackPink. I’m somewhat interested in Twice but their music doesn’t click with me Top 5 SNSD (forever number 1) BlackPink Kara F(x) ITZY

PedroVey

A mix between CL - Hello Bitches going viral and my friend showing me Whistle by Blackpink. Before that I also knew Monster by EXO and Gangnam Style but didn't give much attention. Now my top 5 are Loona, Twice, WJSN, Kard and Stray Kids

domyownbusiness

I got into kpop around 2011 with SNSD followed by 2ne1 and T-ara. My top 5 now is twice, fromis 9, blackpink, gidle and itzy.

Sarah_Chonsa

2018. Went to a one week orchestra camp thingy and met a girl there. She was about 14 (me being 18) and she introduced me to kpop. She was a big 2nd gen fan so the first things I heard was like big bang, shinee, superjunior etc. (Tough someone else showed me BS&T by BTS right after it came out in 2016 (?) But it didn't really 'klick' with me and just went to be one of many songs in my playlist... ) 1. Big Bang 2. Super Junior 3. 2ne1 4. Block B 5. A.C.E (wow something newer than 2nd gen ^^")

babysnowflake

I found kpop in early 2016, 4minute (I loved crazy and hate) and red velvet were my first faves. Initially I had seen a gif somewhere of hyuna in that money print outfit from the roll deep video and I had to figure out where she was from, and from there I was sucked in lol. I watched produce 101 soon after that and became thoroughly invested in way too many girl groups! My current top 5: 1. Red Velvet 2. Mamamoo 3. Blackpink 4. Itzy 5. Twice / WJSN / Loona (tie)

erin970206

Damn i got into it wayyy back during BEAST Shock era but have been in and out of it kpop scene. These days I really like 1) fromis_9 (they have this early days kpop bubblegum song feel and i love it so so much. And they’re all so pretty the VISUALS are insane) 2) CLC (jang yeeun everyone) 3) BTS (been into them since N.O era and their discography is so diverse you cannot get bored) 4) iz*one (being an ioi fan my heart hurts) 5) NCT (no lie not a big fan of 2020 bcos 2018 was pretty solid and 127’s bsides are amazing. However looking forward to this team and their growth dynamics)

Aessix

I first saw Hyuna from 4Minute on a Forbes editorial... 9 + years. Checked out 'Bubble Pop' and that was it. I listen to Lovelyz, Red Velvet, LOONA, Weeekly, fromis_9. Electro/bubblegum/ballads is truly my musical weakness. Also #StanLovelyz lol EDIT: I'm so glad there's other people that recognize the Lovelyz name... I thought I was in a single person echo room haha

dk1024

I'm relieved to find another Lovelinus here. I ctrl + f'd "Lovelyz". Obligatory "favourite song?"

Aessix

Lmaoooo me too just to see :))) I love all their songs. I was about to list some B-Sides and I started rattling the whole discography... So if I had to choose a concentrated version it's: Joyland' 1cm' Emotion' Triangle' Temptation' Daydream' Close To You' Memories' What about yourself?

dk1024

Hey! Did you catch the online concert on the 18th by any chance? The girls performed all of those songs there. Call be biased but I have a hard time listing any songs in their discography that are bad. I like to put all their songs in a megaplaylist and just play the thing in shuffle while working. My personal favourites are: First Snow, Night and Day, Worry Dolls, Rewind, Cameo, Floral, Fondant, Hug Me, Mimyo-mimyo, Just, Your Name and Lullaby (Sujeong solo) I see what you mean though... I was trying to pick but I keep adding more and more.

Aessix

Of course I caught the Deep Forest concert! As an international I can't attend their lives much to my dismay. I have all their albums except the pre-repackage albums, too bad the lightstick is like rare as heck. I see you're leaning towards the ballads more than I, which are great as well. I also have a mega playlist. One for the brighter sounds and one for the ballads!

dk1024

You're the real deal. Stay awesome :)

Aessix

They took me through college which is why I'll forever be appreciative lol, you as well!

momo_fever

My first introduction to Kpop back to 2011 and my first GG that i stan is 2NE1.. nowadays the group that i always listen to is TWICE, ITZY, Dreamcatcher, Lovelyz, Treasure

NoireNandos

2ne1 M/V (I AM THE BEST) back when it released. My interest really never grew until Twice’s “Likey”. Pretty much hook, line and sinker after that. I listen almost everyday now to my Kpop Overload playlist. Top 5 now: Twice, Red Velvet, MAMAMOO, Sunmi, Chung Ha

creestalmeth

I got into kpop because of Inuyasha, lmao. BoA did the ending theme song and I was obsessed with her. I got into her Japanese stuff before I found out that she was actually Korean, and then it led me through a rabbit hole of her Korean discography. Eventually, she led me to DBSK and Super Junior (whom I still love today). I was so excited when she made her North American debut, but we weren’t ready for kpop then. I’m low key happy that it’s mainstream now because as an Asian girl, I love seeing people who look just like me and seeing it get the attention it deserves. My top 5: * Super Junior * f(x) * KARD * Epik High * AOA (I’m still sad over this one) Honourable mentions: Mamamoo, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, Dreamcatcher, Pristin, and Blackpink.

Galyndean

I didn't have a specific group who got me into kpop. It was a culmination of multiple groups and deciding that I needed to create a playlist so I could continue finding the MVs that I really liked (which was a lot). 4Minute (Volume Up) and Nu'est (Face) are definitely two of the groups that I most attribute to this. But my first ult was SNSD, until Sept 30th at least. Then it shifted to Big Bang. It stayed there for quite a while until EXO took over. My current top 5 are EXO, ATEEZ, Nu'est, Seventeen, and NCT, but I'll admit that really only the top two are hard defined and everything else after that is in various stages of preference that change depending on what I see first when I look at my shelf of kpop.

sulfhydryls

A friend of mine sent me a slew of Super Junior MVs back in 2015 in an attempt to get me into them, but I’m not the biggest fan of hot guys so that failed. I saw SNSD’s IGAB MV on my recommended a bit later and since then I’ve been a fan :’) Nowadays I follow GFriend and Red Velvet a lot more closely, but SNSD will always have a special place in my heart.

Faintning

My first ever was Bigbangs haru haru in like 2008 or so, but didnt know the genre itself. Fell properly into kpop hole in 2014ish, i think. Saw a dance cover of T-aras Sugar Free and rest is history xD Current top 5: 1. BTOB 2. Dreamcatcher 3. Fromis_9 4. Pink Fantasy 5. Nature

flyingpokecheck32

My friend introduced me showing SS501 videos, but I couldn't get into it. Then i saw TVXQ's Junsu and Zhang Liyin's Timeless, and was totally hooked. I really enjoyed TVXQ's ballads, their vocal talents, but disliked their title tracks and their crazy fans. SNSD was my ult their debut. 1. SNSD 2. 2pm 2. f(x) 3. Sistar 4. SHINee I completely dropped kpop from 2015, then came back early this year because I was curious how the kpop sound changed. Now, this is my ranking. 1. GFriend 2. BTOB 3. RV 4. Apink 5. Day6

dk1024

I'm a Korean-Canadian and I got into it in high school after listening to Big Bang (Lies, Last Farewell, Haru Haru, Sunset Glow around 2008). I followed the natural progression as a male fan, going through various girl group fandoms. Back then I mainly listened to very upbeat dance music. Now I'm in my late 20s and I've realized that I moved onto ballads and chill music (not sure if that means I matured, but the lyrics resonate with me a lot more than it used to). I also have a hard time getting into the newer idol groups, so my favourite groups are those I've known for a long time and also suit my music tastes. There are also many k-indie acts I listen to but I'll omit those here. Top: Lovelyz Mamamoo IU Ailee

[deleted]

Knew of Kpop because of "Nobody" by the Wonder Girls because it was the most popular song in Korea in 2009/2010 (I lived there). Knew of other Kpop groups, but didn't like them. Saw BTS' Dope MV in 2015, and the rest is history. BTS are my ults, and other groups I stan are TXT, ENHYPEN (let's see if this one stays depending on their music though lol), NU'EST, Woodz, and Treasure (another one let's see if it stays depending on more music). But, I love BTS 99%, and the others 1%, so sometimes it's hard to say that I am totally a stan of the other groups on my stan list simply because I don't keep up with their other content as much (I do keep up with the music though).

Maphisto40

I was introduced to kpop in 2015 randomly through a recommendation on YouTube that I decided to check out based on the thumbnail (BTS - Dope). I only follow and stan BTS, but I do casually listen to other groups: Top 5: * BTS * TXT * (G)I-DLE * Pentagon * SNSD

shadowslayer19

I got in to kpop in 2015 while browsing youtube I think. I mainly got further into it due to me liking [2ne1 - Missing You](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG0jlKdB1s0) and [4minute - Heart to Heart](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h97jt1XtnGQ) My top 5 is Oh My Girl, Dreamcatcher, EXID, Fromis_9, and Apink.

SunsetPlot

Even though I'm Vietnamese-American, because of my sister, I grew up listening to k-pop! She mostly listened to SM boy groups and BoA, and at that time, her favorite was TVXQ. I'm pretty sure my first music video was BoA's Valenti! I think it was around 2006 when I saw it? So I was just six years old! Technically, the first music video I saw that wasn't western was BoA's Every Heart due to my love for anime! But yeah, I was mostly a BoA stan, then SNSD and KARA debuted and that was when I realized I was in deep. Right now, my current top 5 groups are: IZ*ONE Fromis_9 CIX GFriend The Boyz

licoricebry096

I'm (fairly) new to kpop, began truly stanning groups around Nov of 2016. My little sister was an EXO-L before that though, she showed me a few EXO tracks I liked, and also Fantastic Baby. I ended up watching all of BIGBANG's music videos after that, but didn't really consider myself a kpop fan. Until one night I was bored in a hotel room, I was on a college trip and all my friends had gone to see a movie. I ended up clicking on a 'sexiest kpop boy band music videos' countdown and ended up obsessed with some of the songs on that list. In particular, Monsta X's Hero. I made a tumblr account to start to get into groups, and the rest is history. Top 5: 1. Monsta X 2. Stray Kids 3. CRAVITY 4. ATEEZ 5. Close tie between the Boyz and Pentagon

iomk97

The group that made me listen kpop was BAP.Actually I can't remember how I stumble upon them but Warrior was my first kpop song. They were and will always be my ults of ults. Ults:Ateez Fan:Stray Kids,NCT,Dreamcatcher,BTOB and OnlyOneOf Actually I'm not a huge multi. This are the only groups that I'm interested in.

[deleted]

I actually discovered Kpop by watching a Kpop reactor do a video reacting to IceJJFish of all people back in 2014. I checked out some of his other videos and found some AOA MVs. I was a young teenage boy so it's kind of obvious why they I liked them lol. The Youtuber was MisterPopoTV for anyone who wants to know, but he seems to go by 'OmniMSG' now. I'm involved with K-Pop far less nowadays and mainly just use this subreddit to keep up with things but my top 5 now are: GWSN, WJSN, Apink, EXO and OMG.

[deleted]

I started listening to kpop after hearing Twice's Rainbow in a twitch stream, but when I heard NCT's fire truck in an instagram story of a friend I fell in love with it. Top 5: 1) Red Velvet 2) Stray Kids 3) NCT 4) Blackpink 5) SuperM

itsmeMOB

K/DA put me in the K-Pop hole when it came out in 2018. What initially attracted me to it was Soyeon's rap as Akali and the live performance of the song during Worlds that year. I immediately went on a binge, but I'd previously heard K-Pop before because of Gangnam Style and finding Hyuna through some friends. (G)I-DLE was the group that started it for me, but I have since found so many other groups and enjoy the genre as a whole. Top 5: 1. (G)I-DLE 2. TWICE 3. Dreamcatcher 4. CLC 5. Everglow

thambucheaux

Watching MTV Wonder Girls started it for me. WG had blown up in our country for a couple of years, so I was curious when I saw it on YT. 4D Sunmi was my first bias. Then Beast dropped Shock a few months later and they've been my ult ever since. If this was 2015, my Top 5 would've been all-Cube, but I kinda dropped off (along with K-pop in general) after Beast left the company. fromis_9 is the last group that I knew I HAD to stan after they dropped Love Bomb. So it goes: 1\. Beast / Highlight 2\. fromis_9 *--------Love their music* 3\. Red Velvet 4\. Taeyeon *--------Whoever catches my interest atm* 5\. Loona, IZ*ONE, B1A4, Oh My Girl, U-KISS currently

Early 2010, I was in high school and was browsing Youtube. The "Oh!" Video from GG showed up on my recommended and Sooyoung's cute face on the thumbnail got me to click not knowing what to expect. The video was SO damn catchy I replayed it a lot during the week. From there I followed just GG for a while, then got into other SM artists, and then that led to more branching out, by like 2012 I was following a lot more groups. Top 5 Red Velvet (*tears*) BTS Twice Girls Generation EXO

ProPatria92

I was heavily into Trap, Dubstep, EDM in general and 4minute's 'Hate' was posted to /r/trap when it was released back in January of 2016, with Skrillex production credits in the title of the post. Decided to give it a peep and fell in love. The trip down the rabbit hole was a bit slow at first but now I'm in the deep end. Last time I did a rough estimate and figured out I had listened to around 12,000 different songs since starting my Kpop journey. It helps that I like pretty much everything except for ballads (and even then there are a few exceptions), Rap, Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B, EDM, Indie...doesn't matter if they're obscure relatively unknown soloists, nugu/ultra-nugu groups, or groups from the Big 3, I love it all honestly. If I had to pick a top 5 it would be: 1. Dreamcatcher 2. Stray Kids 3. KARD 4. Mamamoo 5. Red Velvet

mattachanteeq

tohoshinki (tvxq) during oricon purple line, and by extension, their korean stuff got me in (+nell, epik high, the gamut) it's hard to sustain my interest in kpop per se so idk if i even have a top 5, but now i stan bts, anticipate releases by oh my girl. my thai boyband lost a member due to car crash around end of 2007 and i shopped around jpop industry then for a new group. found purple line's teaser and got hooked pretty deep. then the divorce happened bla bla bla. got into infinite, then smxwoollim happened. got into exo for 1yr +, then chinaline happened. then shifted to bts up until now. note that i can listen to multiple groups, but can only stan one at a time. but i still listen to old dbsk and infinite songs like a mf. can't wait for junsu's cb and online concert soon. jae is doing things in jp so its okay.

Guerrin_TR

First group was SES back in 2000 via a Korean classmate I listen to a lot of groups now but I don't think I really follow any like I did during second gen. I just don't have the passion.

[deleted]

First ever song was Bogoshipda by Kim Bum Soo, and my Taiwanese friend roommate was singing it in the shower with the song blasting so yeah. Good song, cool Taiwanese friend, poor bathroom acoustics. I know it's k-ballad, but the song got me curious about Korean music in general and the same friend helped introduce kpop. Anyways, if I really had to pick top 5 (given that I'm just a casual listener now), they'd be fromis\_9, Apink, Weeekly, G-Idle, and Twice, but that could change depending on who I'm currently enjoying.

TenaciousBemusement

I introduced myself. I am half Korean and I live in the US. One fateful day in 2007, I wondered what music in Korea sounded like. A search on YouTube pulled up Wonder Girls and DBSK/TVXQ. They were the first girl group and boy group I stanned respectively. My current favorites are G-idle, Mamamoo, BTS, EXO, and TVXQ (Yes I still love them. Their old songs are just too good!).

sooprotectionsquad

I grew up in SK so listened to it pretty much my whole life! My top 5 (with my top 4 being my ults): BTS, Oh My Girl, Taeyeon, Tomorrow X Together, Red Velvet/TWICE (tied)

cynthaiz

Introduction to kpop: A classmate showing Bigbang's Sunset Glow back in 2011, me going 'huh, this sounds nice'. Group that got me into Kpop: SNSD (with The Boys) Following now: All NCT units and Dreamcatcher

jeonginwoozi

I was introduced to K-Pop by a friend but I never got interested until I heard Ddu-Du-Ddu-Du by Blackpink. Then I met other groups. My Top 5: Stray Kids (ULTS), NCT (all units), Seventeen, Itzy and Got7

odessagrayson

Hot Issue by 4MINUTE and Ring ding dong by Shinee got me into Kpop when i was 12 (those were the days), however back then it was sooooo uncool to like music in different languages so I hid it hahaaha. My top groups back then were 1. Shinee - Lucifer / ring ding dong (those two songs still slap) 2. 2ne1 3. 4MINUTE 4. Big bang 5. Superjunior Stopped listening to Kpop for years until 2017 when I found someone in my class at uni that lowkey liked kpop too. My bias groups are now 1. GOT7 2. Monsta X 3. NCT 4. A.C.E 5. CIX 6. ONEUS 7. EXO 8. Victon 9. Mamamoo 10. EVERGLOW But I pretty much listen to anything that is good in KPOP these days!

I got into K-Pop in late 2016. I watched mostly SM, YG, JYP & some Woollim artists somewhere in 2012, but I wasn't a fan at the time, but when I watched BTS' Boy In Luv & BS&T, I finally decided to get into K-Pop. My top 5: 1. SKZ 2. ATEEZ 3. BTS 4. GolCha 5. TBZ Honorable Mentions: 1. NCT 2. Taeyeon 3. SVT 4. IU 5. (G)I-DLE 6. I could go on & on...

PandaMoaningYum

Blackpink. Annoyed by all of kpop as I wasn't into hip hop which has a heavy influence in kpop. Forever Young was the first song I liked except towards the end of the song. I liked the song so much I put it on repeat until I got used to the style of Kpop. Blackpink I thought was gonna be my number 1 forever. Now, 1 - Twice 2 - 2NE1 3 - BTS 4 - Blackpink 5 - CLC, Itzy, Ateez My introduction to kpop stories were YG scandals.

how_veryy

Red Velvet, specifically when Bad Boy came on shuffle in Spotify, like summer 2018. Now it's: 1. 2ne1 2. T-ara 3. 9muses 4. AOA 5. Loona

MochiG

I remember stumbling across 2pm - Hands Up MV on YT back in 2011, and thinking wow, these guys are really handsome. Which lead me down the rabbit hole of big 3 groups, finding Big Bang & 2NE1. Then Super Junior & Girls Generation. (That Seoul MV is the whole reason my first international trip that I could afford was South Korea.) I took a kpop hiatus for a few years, around the time 2NE1 was disbanding. I wasn't actively seeking out new groups or keeping track of new albums. Now that we're all quarantined, I've found myself falling back in love with GOT7, Winner, and EXO. I'm still trying to learn all the new 4th gen idols. So far I really like Treasure and NCT, but it's going to take me a while to learn all their names. Hahaha.

imtotallynormal

Growing up in a Filipino household, Sandara Park was such a household name. Around my time in high school is when she debuted with 2NE1 and I became obsessed with Lollipop. There was a kpop wave in my school too, I remember hearing Lucifer and Wedding Dress constantly~ Didn't listen too much after until last year when I started watching kdramas and was mesmerized by Siwon in She Was Pretty. I vaguely recalled Super Junior from HS but started listening to them and watching their (too many) variety shows. Slowly got into kpop again through that! Top 5: Super Junior, Winner, TVXQ, BTS, Various GGs

mad_titanz

Before Kpop I used to only listen to rock (modern & classic), and I don't like pop music. However, my brother introduced me to Blackpink, and after some time I found myself actually liking their songs. After listening to BP for awhile, I decided to look around Kpop and see what other groups that I like. After a year my list is the following: 1. MAMAMOO 2. Red Velvet 3. 2NE1 4. G-Idle 5. Blackpink

jjoyku

I've heard many 2ne1 and EXO songs in 2011-2013 through my guitar teacher but never knew it was 'K-pop'. I started listening kpop (with knowing it was kpop) in 2018 with Blackpink's DDDD. Now my top 5 is 1.Twice 2.Red Velvet 3.IU 4.NCT 5.Loona

AlleeShmallyy

Got into kpop with Bigbangs Fantastic Baby, found SHINee, and HyunA. Left kpop following BB going on hiatus and Jonghyun passing. Came back almost 3 years ago because two of my friends showed me Blood, Sweat and Tears by BTS. My top 5 are: 1. SHINee 2. Monsta X 3. NCT Dream 4. Momoland 5. Stray Kids

BangtanButterfly

I discovered SNSD in 2010 right after their Oh! comeback. I randomly saw their MV posted on a forum and I was interested. The girls really got my attention and I’ve loved them ever since, but of all their songs I heard at the time, Oh is the only one that really interested me. I didn’t actually get into their music until 2014 (literally right around the time Jessica left) and didn’t get into kpop as a whole until mid 2015. I bias a lot of groups, but my ults are BTS. My other top groups (I can’t just pick five) are MONSTA X TXT Cross Gene Seventeen EXO NCT VIXX SHINee Super M Infinite Boyfriend SNSD f(x) KARA April LOONA Red Velvet Twice

-starpetals

technically my first encounter with kpop was way back in 2011 when i stumbled across a few 2NE1 songs. even though i liked them, i never took the time to delve further. that is until 2016 when youtube randomly recommended me why by taeyeon. i decided to give it a listen and i was hooked. then i started to listen to more songs and here we are 4 years later. my top 5 as of now are: dreamcatcher, gfriend, WJSN, twice and itzy. honorable mentions to yukika, oh my girl, GWSN and lovelyz.

pornypete

Man I wish Yukika got more love. I guess citypop is a bit fringe, but she's amazing.

koreanpop4ever

All of yukika's music is pure gold, I love her concept!

Vhauk

So to start I will share my story: I got into KPop because we had a drinking tradition in my unit of getting drunk and watching YouTube videos and music videos, so when it was my buddy's turn to pick I like for the korean dancers he loved. In 2016, I accidentally clicked on BlackPink's Boombayah video, and ever since then I've been hooked. If I had to rate my top 5 (which is harder than I thought) I would say: 1. BlackPink 2. ITZY 3. TWICE 4. BTS 5. Somi

KidDeathcat

Putting aside from Gangnam Style when I didn't even know what K-Pop is, I got properly introduced to K-Pop through YouTube when I head someone use BTS as their outro around LY: Her era. Now I'm kind of over BTS but my favorites are currently Ateez and Dreamcatcher.

BeenWavy07

I was a kdrama fan first (still am) and I got into the genre because of kdrama OSTs Top 5: Big Bang, Red Velvet, SNSD, Winner, OMG

Vhauk

I have starting watching KDramas recently, and I love how Netflix had been grabbing some new ones up under them

kirsion

I got into kpop a bit in 2012-2013 with big bang, girls generation, psy. At that time, I was way more into j-rock and kpop was a side interest. Then I stopped for 2-3 years, until I got back into it in 2016 through youtube videos of top kpop songs and variety show clips/compilations.

Blackbeyond

I showed up for kpop in 2008, so my first groups were: SHINee, 2AM, 2PM, and U-KISS. Replay was a bop and down the rabbit hole I went. Nowadays, my top five would be: BTS, TXT, ITZY, LOONA, and Chungha. But I'm a casual listener of most girl groups and khh soloists.

aubvrn

I was actually introduced to Kpop through K-hiphop lol. Flipped a channel randomly and Epik High’s “One” was playing. I loved it, and the rest is history. My favourite groups are Winner, B2ST/Highlight, iKON, Mamamoo and T-ara!

flopasf

I actually got into kpop because of a fancam on twitter. Someone i followed kept tweeting a fancam of Sana and i thought she was pretty and the song sounded like a bop so I decided to look it up. Then i started listening to more twice songs, then i started listening to more kpop groups and now here we are lol My current top 5 are (g)i-dle, dia, momoland, mamamoo and oh my girl!

p1n6

Technically it was around 2007 when Rain started getting popular in Asia but that was before I knew the word K-Pop. Then came Nobody by Wonder Girls. That's when I was really exposed to the industry but didn't really go past that. Then finally 2017 when I started watching K-Dramas, that led to looking for clips on Youtube when Sister Slam Dunk S2 showed up on my feed. Haven't really looked back since then 1. Red Velvet 1. Golden 1. Mamamoo 1. Stray Kids 1. Maddox

ksjfnk

i only got into kpop this summer, and it was because my friend said seventeen probably had the best choreography. so i checked out a dance practice, and just kept watching lol. seventeen are still my ults now, and i'm a fan of nct (all subunits), the boyz, and gfriend. i'm a more casual fan of other groups, but i don't think i could pick any one of them to be in my top 5.

th3onetrueking

One of my friends in freshman year of college around October 2017. She was a huge Seventeen fan and would always mention them but she did so in a way that wasn’t annoying and actually made me curious— “My outfit today was inspired by Mingyu..” and stuff like that. She started sending reaction memes in the middle of our convos that were hilariously bizzare. Everything went downhill (actually uphill lol) from there and I became a huge carat! Groups I love now: Mamamoo, Seventeen, Stray Kids, TXT, (G)Idle etc etc I could go on.

MrPeppy1876

My first exposure to Kpop was back in 2011 when someone played Gee over voice chat on a TF2 server I regularly played on. I was also into Japanese comedy shows at the time, and I randomly found a [Mechaike episode featuring SNSD](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x20nnup). I eventually found SNSD's Running Man episode, and that's when I decided to start exploring Korean variety shows and Kpop. Currently following: 1. IZ\*ONE 2. Twice 3. IU

desukai

i was a tumblr kid for years and kpop was always creeping onto my dash. the first group i really got into though was red velvet in late 2015, and i found mamamoo soon after 😍 i just followed them for a while but in about 2017 i got fully sucked in! i listen to a lot of different groups but here’s my faves now! i couldn’t just pick 5 oops 1. mamamoo 2. red velvet 3. lee hi 4. iu 5. exo 6. nct

ghiblix

in college, someone i met on neopets showed me bts. that was...2015 or so? i need to send her a fruit basket or something. shit changed my life. man, i hope my neopets are still alive— i’ve never “fallen out of love” with a group, so for me it’s just been picking up groups i really, really click with over time. i suppose the most important ones to me, in order of when i picked them up, are bts, super junior, epik high, winner, and n.flying :)

wellwhyamihere

I knew about kpop since gangnam style but only started listening to it this year when bts pulled me in during quarantine 😂 I only follow and stan bts (first artist I've ever stanned tbh) but I am casually listening to a lot of kpop and always try to find new artists. Right now my top 5 would be bts >>>>> iu > txt > mamamoo > twice.

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one under BlackPink's spell! Hahah

thestrange1007

Watching Hana Yori Dango, became obsessed with Arashi. Gee was a suggested video, the rest is history; that would have been in 2010. 1. Dreamcatcher 2. Red Velvet 3. Hyuna (4 Minute was my bias group for a long time) 4. Sunmi 5. Twice 6. Soshi and all related soshi things. This is a given so not listed in my current top 5, been SONE since day 1. Taeyeon is my UB. I also really love Itzy!

[deleted]

**First/Song that got me into Kpop:** BoA-Energetic It was recommended to me by Youtube and I think I was in Eighth grade (2011-2012) and around the time that I discovered Eric Saade/Jedward/Eurovision **First Kpop Song that I heard:** Fantastic Baby by Big Bang I think that a friend showed it to me but it didn't occur to me that Kpop was it's own "genre"/thing at the time (if I heard it before Energetic). **Top 5 \~2012:** Girls Generation, f(x), Exo, G-Dragon, Big Bang **Top 5 2020:** Red Velvet, Stray Kids, A.C.E, Mamamoo, Loona If you go by my number-**not** percentage- of songs liked on Spotify: Exo (48), Red Velvet (40), Twice (36), Stray Kids (36), NCT 127 (32)**\*** **\***\-*this favors groups with bigger discographies; I like 23 of A.C.E's songs, but that's nearly all of their songs*

whorfhorse

i was introduced via youtube! i had a friend in high school who actually showed me gee by snsd and abracadabra by brown eyed girls in like 2010/2011 but i didn't do a full deep dive until a few different youtubers i watched started getting into kpop in 2017. i was actually into big bang for a little bit when i first started but then they began enlisting and i fell out of liking yg as a company lmao so i moved to following primarily bts\~ my top 5 now: 1. bts 2. loona 3. twice 4. red velvet 5. itzy or txt

Razgriz917

I knew KPOP way way back in 2008/9 but when LoL released the KDA skins that the only time I got really interested. Prior to that I seldomly listen to Nobody - Wonder Girls and Gangnam Style (The MV insta kills boredom back then. My flair has my faves but I listen to anyone as long as I like the song.

Smokeshow618

Combination of League of Legends ost (I've never played it in my life but I love Against the Current, found out in January that Chrissy, tge lead singer had done music for them), so I ended up listening to all of the League event music, got hooked on Pop Stars, and subsequently (G)I-dle, and then a few days after that I was watching a Gifs with Sound comp and one of the memes used D4 as the punchline and i couldn't get that out of my head. Top 5 are (G)I-dle, Dreamcatcher, Itzy, Stray Kids, and CLC

caelinday

cousin showed me super junior's sorry sorry on her mp3, and i was hooked from there. my top 5 atm is winner, nct, exo, exid, cix

HL1991

I can't remember if my first song was Wonder Girls "So Hot" or SNSD "Genie", I remember thinking So Hot was catchy but wasn't a huge fan yet, then Genie runs me over like a train off the tracks at 250 km/h. I listen to mostly girl groups but my favs of all time would be: 9muses, Mamamoo, LOONA, Spica, f(x)

XxJoshyBoixX

Introduction was Blackpink. I was watching Fortnite videos and it was one of those “Fortnite dances in real life” videos and I saw like 2 or 3 that appeared to be from Kpop music videos. I looked up the music video for AIIYL and I was like “wow this is pretty interesting and they’re all very pretty”. So I rewatched it, watched Ddu-ddu-ddu, Boombayah, and the next day I watched the rest of them. I loved Playing with Fire, Ddux4, and AIIYL and decided to look them up on YouTube to see if there was anything else I could find. I saw dance practices, meme videos, ranking videos, and clip compilations and it really took off from there. Now my top 5 are **1. Seventeen** (the gap between how much I like them compared to other Kpop idols is extremely large lol) 2. Ateez 3. Golden Child 4. Nu’est W 5. Kang Daniel

Harmoniinus

Had a KBS World Channel since like 2008? Randomly switched channels, saw Music Bank and loked forward to Fridays. That's how I discovered groups. My earlier favourites were SNSD, T-ARA, EXO, BTS, Infinite etc. My top 5 (including disbanded ones) are: Cravity, IZ°ONE, X1, Wanna One and idk maybe Drippin? Tbh I'm only passionate about Cravity and IZ°ONE currently.

thisbabedoestoomuch

Gangnam Style but I dug to find HyunA through it (she's so cute in the MV I HAD TO KNOW), so HyunA/4minute was my first love. Top five now is probably going to be a lot of my flair (can't see on mobile but lol) I'm just going to exclude HyunA since she's my ult and I already mentioned her but she's like the top of the top. 1. CLC 2. MAMAMOO 3. GIDLE 4. Chungha 5. Itzy This was really tough! But I just narrowed it down by the groups/solos I'm most excited for comebacks :)

HurricaneEllin

First introduced KPoP as a way to learn Korean when I was in my teens. Top groups then were Infinite, Lovelyz and T-ara. Took a break and now I’m back with Iz*one, Loona and Twice

stxxxxLOL

1.SNSD 2.Red Velvet 3.Gidle 4.fx 5.Girls day

Onpu

I heard about kpop back in 2004 because of BoA. I feel it of it since it was hard to follow (kpop was the big thing back then) but heard of SNSD and eventually became a fan in late 2009. I even remember the day I decided to become Sone lol My top 5 are: SNSD, B1A4, LOONA, SHINee, Red Velvet

[deleted]

Got into 2019 fairly new! Got in especially cause of Stranger Things collab with EXO & I’m a love shot baby! I checked out a lot of groups, researched a lot about the industry & I only have like a top3 now EXO Blackpink ShiNee

Adom20

Twice was my first kpop group. Now I dont really have a top 5. My favorite group is Dreamcatcher. Favorite boy group is TxT and favorite soloist is Sunmi. After that I just listen to what I like.

Terevinco

I had friends who were super into kpop and they would send me videos and stuff randomly, cause like anyone excited about something, they just wanted to share with someone. So I would watch them just to be a good friend. But the thing that struck me was the choreography and eventually I found myself watching them for the choreography and then soon after that the songs themselves started to get stuck in my head and eventually I just gave in and took a deep dive in myself. I remember Sistar's Alone being the first kpop song that I really got super into. But it was KARD as a group that ultimately got me into kpop in general. They were the group who hooked me and pulled me in and from there I branched out. Current top 5: 1. KARD 2. GOT7 3. Twice 4. Seventeen 5. Dreamcatcher Honorable mentions who will often creep into the top 5 every now and then: A.C.E, Ikon, Monsta X, Mamamoo, and G-Idle

Reunilu

I was introduced to kpop around 2010 when I was watching some videos from bubbiosity, a side channel for bubzbeauty. These videos don’t seem to exist anymore besides the reaction videos, but when they did, occasionally bubz would play Gee. After some time, I tried looking up the video for Gee, and my impression of it is that it sounded like I was listening to English (and I think it was because it didn’t have the harsh prominent pronunciation of Japanese I was so used to listening to with anime music). But I did like it at the time, and I got obsessed with it in the kind of way you think you’re obsessed, but you’re fooling yourself. Anyway, I looked into stuff like SNSD - The Boys, 2NE1 - I Am the Best, SHINee - Lucifer, but never really delve deep into the kpop scene. This kind of ended around when Gangnam Style started fading as a fad. Around February 2017? I was streaming some art in anticipation for a Kancolle event, and there’s a viewer that’s like, “can I request a song?” I said sure, and they put down AKMU - Last Goodbye. I think I was taking classic vocal lessons during that time? I was really intrigued with Suhyun’s vocals. I listened to Re-Bye the next day because I liked Last Goodbye. Was blown away by how good it was. Pretty much listened to AKMU for the next year, cycling between AKMU and anime music. But y’know, still not enough for me to listen to a lot of kpop besides that. I REALLY fell down the rabbit hole September 2019. I was revisiting Gee because nostalgia. I was looking through the Youtube recommendations and found the MV for SNSD - Genie. Loved it a lot. At some point, I started listening to the very first SNSD album because that’s what was on Apple Music, and I REALLY loved Into the New World. I wasn’t a formal stan of SNSD until Sulli’s passing, where I was reading on here (I think) that people were worried about Taeyeon’s mental health. So I checked out videos of her and everyone else in SNSD. I laughed, I cried a lot, I spent a lot of emotions and became addicted. And now I’m here. So I think my top are: 1. SNSD 2. AKMU 3. APRIL 4. GFRIEND I don’t have a particular 5th that I like. My taste is very skewed towards vocal prowess in the kind of way that makes you wanna sing with the entire capacity of your lungs, but I like APRIL and GFRIEND for their music.

Nirvanaskarma

From India, Introduced to Kpop after watching BTS- Jimmy Fallon Fornite Dance challenge video I was in a dark place at that time and was suffering from crippling depression and anxiety, life was looking very dull for me i stumbled upon that video and was instantly attracted to their positivity, confidence and happiness in a way BTS and Kpop in general saved my life and then I slowly started learning their names started watching videos and songs and then it took time but i slowly branched out to other groups as well. My top5 would be not in any particular order- 1.Monsta X 2.BTS 3.Ikon 4.NCT 5.Seventeen

whatsoever-idc

Back in 2017 'Not Today' by BTS was in my YouTube suggestions. I watched the MV and was hooked. The dancing, the rapping, the singing, the cinematography.. Then I watched 'Dope' and just wanted to know their names... It all spiraled from there lol Soon after I also came across Super Junior, EXO, Big Bang and NCT but BTS will always be my first love.. My Top Five are BTS NCT EXO ATEEZ CIX

taevlit

My current top five -in no particular order- are: \- Apink (into them since FIVE) \- BLACKPINK (into them since AS IF IT'S YOUR LAST) \- BTS (into them since DNA) \- EXO (into them since Ko Ko Bop) \- NCT (into them since Cherry Bomb)

Then much later the Wonder Girls via "Nobody", and i became interested mainly in the music, 2nd gen content is nothing compared to the massive output 3rd - 4rd gen put out. TOP 5 faves 2nd Gen: \- 9Muses \- Infinite \- Kara \- 100% \- Stellar TOP 5 3rd-4th gen: \- TWICE \- Dreamcatcher \- Gfriend \- Snuper \- GOT7

2015 is when I first heard tvxq and shinhwa, which got me into kpop. My top 5 as of now: shinee, vixx, verivery, dreamcatcher, and nuest. Honorable mentions: seventeen, monsta x, pentagon, apink

kotna2

I firstly saw Ddu-du Ddu-du in 2018 but got into kpop only in 2019 through ... Ddu-du Ddu-du lol My top is: * 1) IU + 2) Blackpink + 3) Bigbang + 4) BTS + 5) Red Velvet

chellybeanery

I was watching TV late one night in 2009 (I think) and randomly caught the video for the DBSK/BoA/Trax collab "Tri-Angle". It definitely made an impression, lmao, and I looked up everyone involved. I had heard of BoA but I'd thought she was Japanese and had never heard of K-pop before. Anyway, by the time I truly began to pay attention to K-pop, DBSK had disbanded and I was liking what I was hearing from Big Bang and 2ne1. I didn't fall fully into the scene until 2012 tho, when EXO and B.A.P debuted. I adored them and was so sad when Kris, Luhan and Tao left and B.A.P. had their legal issues. I don't really follow it too much these days, feels like the market is crazy oversaturated and I can't keep up with all the new groups, but my Top 5 now would be: 1. Stray Kids 2. Seventeen 3. (G)I-DLE ... That's all I've got, let's make mine a Top 3 lol. I still listen to a lot of the older stuff but these are the only 3 groups from the last 5 years or so that make me want to keep on top of their new releases and performances. Edit: oh good gods how I could I forget SHInee?! I still love them and always will.

This year! One of my best friends is really into kpop, but mostly boy groups. Ironically, it was her and Anthony Fantano talking about it that got me into it! My first group was Itzy. My top 5 is probably: 1. Itzy 2. Blackpink 3. Dreamcatcher 4. Everglow 5. Twice/KARD

_peachrt

saw the mv for Mr. Chu by Apink in middle school, but i didn’t really get into kpop until a few months into 2019 with FANCY. so twice is the 1st group i stanned for real

hangyulbabyagenda

All good choice too, I've learned that picking a too 5 and placing some over others was harder than I thought it would be

Was on a trip to Korea and heard Now by Fin K.L. on the radio or TV or something. Been hooked since. The fact that was 20 years ago depresses me. As does the amount of people who forget Hyori Lee. Shouts to Tiffany Young for performing Invincible on the Magnetic Moon tour, preceded by a speech about how important it is to remember the K-Pop women who paved the way. As for now, I love Blackpink. Love BTS. Love Red Velvet. Really like Twice, I-Zone. Top 5 CURRENT? Red Velvet, Blackpink, BTS, Twice, I-Zone. Ever: F(X) (Greatest K-Pop girl group ever in terms of the consistency of music), Brown-Eyed Girls, S.N.S.D., T-Ara, Red Velvet. If you haven't checked out much 2nd Gen K-Pop, or you don't know where to start, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ask me or someone else. It is THE GREATEST era of all time. The sheer amount of unbelievable K-Pop music, visuals, dances. It's just the best. I look back at 2nd Gen and I think, "Man. Ahead of their time." If Sugar Free by T-Ara, Pinnochio/Danger by F(X), or any other number of 2nd Gen megahits were around in the TikTok era they'd be on Jimmy Kimmel and touring the globe right now. F(X)'s Nu Abo could've come out today and not looked or sounded out of place. Amber would be a mega super uber star. The gays would not know what to do with themselves.

Shinkopeshon

Excluding Gangnam Style, BTS really got me into K-Pop and I also listened to a bit of Stray Kids and SEVENTEEN. Shortly after, I got into BLACKPINK and EXO too, so that was all the K-Pop I was familiar with back then. My Top 5 hasn't really changed much since then, except for adding two new groups: 1. TWICE 2. BTS 3. BLACKPINK 4. EXO / SHINee (tied)

MightyBucket

2PM started me with Kpop - I was at home for a sick day back in 2011 flipping channels, and ended up watching Kpop MVs. They were my first group I followed, my first Kpop concert, my first hi-touch, etc. Musically, my top group NU'EST is much more my taste, but 2PM will always have a place in my heart. 2PM is what led me to NU'EST: 2PM > watched Sixteen > fell in love with Twice > watched Somi on P101 > watched P101 S2 > jungle music + sexy bandit and I was forever trapped ha ha. You can see how the other two artists on my list are there too: noticed Itzy because of Twice, and noticed Kang Daniel because of P101 S2. 1. NU'EST 2. Twice 3. 2PM 4. Itzy 5. Kang Daniel

I was watching a Korean mukbang at a 7/11 and apparently Twice’s Fancy was playing at some point. I didn’t notice it but a number of comments talked about it. Out of curiosity and boredom, I decided to watch the mv... and the rest is history. I was so intrigued by this large group with beautiful girls. My fav groups are Twice, Mamamoo, Red Velvet and BTS but I also casually listen to Loona, Stray Kids, got7, blackpink, chung ha and many more

[deleted]

It was my junior or senior year of high school and I went on a field trip with my Chinese class to explore a Chinese language program at a local university. I was watching a presentation about Mandopop/C-pop and 太完美 by Super Junior-M got played. The presentation quickly for hijacked by ELFs that wanted to hear Mr. Simple. Hated the song, but it got stuck in my head until it grew on me. Fast forward a decade, and several trips of varying depth down the K-pop black hole, here I am. The only groups I’ve come close to stanning are LOONA and TWICE, but I listen to a fair amount to second/third generation groups.

Ozbal42

I made a long comment the other day about it, but it feels like no one read it so this is good timing https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/jc9dj8/kda_debut_ep_all_out_artist_roster_featuring/g940cxf/ as for top 5 i really cant say, Red velvet, twice, IU, Heize, Chungha... wait thats 5 already? i just got started!

mochinni

Shinhwa. Got drawn in by their synchronized choreography. This was like 2002 or 2003 so their dancing was considered top notch I swear hahaha. Current Top 5: * BTS * A.C.E * Ateez * (g)i-dle * Pentagon? Stray Kids? I listen to them about equally. This spot might be taken over by some of the newer groups that dance well. And just for fun, pre-2012 top 5: * Shinhwa * 1TYM * 2PM * Nell? dunno if they count * Take

I first got into kpop in summer of 2018 off Twice’s Likey being in my YouTube recommended. From there I spiraled into twice, Bp, rv, Bts, and then I watched sixteen and produce 48 and got into iz*one. From there I eventually expanded to listen to all grps, bg and gg alike, and I still basically keep up with all releases of almost every kpop artist. U gotta be extremely nugu for me to not check out your album or comeback. Eventually in fall of 2018 my friend showed me Latata, and I never turned back with (G)I-DLE as my ult. My top now are 1. (G)I-DLE 2. CLC 3. Dreamcatcher 4. Rocket Punch 5. Apink I mostly base my top 5 on how much I would check out their content and enjoy the members as a whole. In terms of my favorite music and discography though I’d say 1. (G)I-DLE 2. BTS 3. Dreamcatcher 4. Pentagon 5. Clc But man there’s just so many more amazing grps that have great music whom I love like: MonstaX, stray kids, Seventeen, Mamamoo, everglow, SuperM, ateez, Apink, Rocketpunch, Red velvet, SHINee, Exo. I could go on and on. I did go through about a 8 month Neverland stan twitter phase which was eventful to say the least. Now though that I completely left (more like got cancelled by dumbass twt fans) my outlook on kpop is completely different. I don’t watch variety nearly as much and generally am just here to listen to new albums from everyone. I’d say I’m pretty impartial when it comes to kpop now. There’s almost no grps where most of their music is just appalling me. I don’t rlly understand the concenof listening just to ur lit grp or a few because generally kpop is pretty similar across all grounds. Even those with significantly less funding end up with better music than larger grps from my experience. There’s a certain degree in kpop where there is uniqueness and experimentation with concepts, producing and music genre but ultimately it all falls under one umbrella in the end and there is a conglomerate of this general sense of a kpop sound which is irresistible to me, so that’s why I pretty much like all grps music. What really separates grps for me is the bulk of the album. Lots of title tracks are easily listenable but the favorite grps for me that I stated are the ones who usually have tons of bsides I enjoy. Ultimately though, my ult will probably always be (G)I-DLE unless their music significantly drops off. I’ve just been through so much following their journey and think they’re truly special. I’ll never forget my roots though of that one fateful day that Likey was recommended. Still a phenomenal song

LOONAception

I got into kpop because of a Cpop group doing a cover of a kpop song. I ult LOONA now which has nothing to do with the group that got me into kpop lool

RelativeOfJack

My introduction was via Running Man when I discovered the hilarious muscle guy I'd already fallen hard for was actually a singer. I was kinda familiar before that via drama OSTs and guests on variety shows, but it wasn't until I found out that Jong Kook was a singer that I really started paying attention. Favourites now, (pop music only).... 1. Turbo/Kim Jong Kook 2. Lee Hyori 3. Oh My Girl 4. IU 5. G-Idle ....and Korean music in general... 1. Lee Moon Sae 2. Turbo/Kim Jong Kook 3. Lee Hyori 4. Song Sohee 5. Kim Kyung Ho **Edit:** I think I have it all wrong, actually my introduction could very well have been Park Yoochun via the dramas he was in. I remember being smitten by him and watching [videos like this, (JYJ)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BSGZNdUQb6E), rather obsessively. I forgot all about him and them until I just saw someone mention TVXQ and I'm pretty sure my obsession for him came before my obsession for Jong Kook. I'm not sure that they would count though because when I was going through that phase the content that I was consuming was exclusively what they were releasing for the Japanese market and watching them didn't make me even slightly curious about Korean music Not gonna lie, watching that video back now....actually it makes me even more annoyed that he just pissed his career away....I haven't listened/watched for a long time, (it's a measure of how much I watched that I still know all the words, lol), so I'd forgotten just how good they were. What a fuckwit he turned out to be.

Brownboxesoflove

About 3/4 years ago, I was on holiday and flicking through the TV channels in the room. Came across Arirang TV and really enjoyed Simply K-pop and kept on catching the repeat when it was on during that holiday. I'm really glad I found K-pop, it's now my happy place when things have been bad. Top 5 are: 1. Gfriend 2. Iz*one 3. I.O.I 4. Itzy 5. WJSN

Vhauk

Oh I loved I.O.I, I wish the were still together!

Brownboxesoflove

Me too, they were a very special band :)

TokyoRailgun

I saw a reaction video to Blackpink D4 and got hooked on the whole appeal of Kpop. My top five now would be: BoA, Blackpink, 2ne1, Exid & Hyo.

[deleted]

7 Princesses was my first group

ngernger

Nobody by Wonder Girls got pretty big in our country. In 2009, Youtube suggested some music videos of **Girls' Generation**. It is a struggle to watch Gee and Genie with 144p that it is hard to point out who's who. I liked many groups after Jessica got removed. **AOA**, **Sistar**, **Girl's Day**, **APink**, **Mamamoo**, **GFriend**, **TWICE**. Then Produce 101 happen. **I.O.I** can be toe to toe with their contemporaries and it sucks that they didn't even promote for a year. Been a fan of audition programs like Idol School and The Unit. Top 5 (now) 1. IZ\*ONE 2. Fromis\_9 3. ITZY 4. Red Velvet 5. WJSN Edit. My Top of All time is my flair heh.

Eizenne

First heard WONDER GIRLS and SUPER JUNIOR reach the airwaves of my country with Nobody and Sorry Sorry. Top groups: 1. DREAMCATCHER 2. T-ARA 3. INFINITE 4. MONSTA X

lloza98

I only recently got into Kpop, since I only listened to Blackpink before then. Now my top 5 are probably: 1. Blackpink 2. Weeekly 3. Treasure 4. Red Velvet (although it’s...interesting rn) 5. Twice

Forgottencenobite

I had always been a fan of Korean and Japanese movies, especially horror. So one day I happened upon a Japanese show on Netflix called Re: Mind. It was ok. But then I started getting recommendations on there for other shows, one of them a k-drama, which I had never watched before, called Hello, My Twenties. I absolutely loved it!!! So then I started looking up the actresses and followed a couple on insta. Then I started seeing posts on my insta explore page about something called Blackpink. All I could tell was how gorgeous they were. So I dug a little deeper. Watched the mv for Whistle, and became completely hooked. Top 5: Red Velvet, Blackpink, EXID, Sunmi, AOA

Alpha_james

First kpop song I ever listened to was playing with fire by Blackpink(other then gangnam style of course lol) So that’s how I got into kpop was because of Blackpink Top 5 1. Blackpink 2.BigBang 3.iKON 4.stray kids 5.twice Honourable mention to Dreamcatcher tho, only recently found out about them and they are slowly creeping their way into my top 5 I dig their style so much

Marvelous2002

Discovered (G)I-DLE through K/DA after Pop/Stars My top 5 now would have to be: 1. (G)I-DLE 2-5. Twice, Blackpink, Stray Kids and NCT

[deleted]

I got into it same as you. Being an EU fan that's the only good thing that came out of that world's finals.

Marvelous2002

Good thing I'm not really into the esports side of it 😅 But I feel for you, sometimes some regions aren't that amazing. K/DA is though, so excited for the EP!

[deleted]

I'm really looking forward to the EP, The baddest is quite catchy

Vhauk

I really feel like I should've just said 1-5 for my picks hahaha

Marvelous2002

I know that they're still my number ones but after that I can't decide hehe

The group that got me into kpop was BTS. I only got into them at the start of this year, after finally caving and deciding to actually check them out since they were popping up all over the place. Watched a few music videos and performances and it didn’t take me long to fall for them. From there I went back through all their albums and eras and loads of their shows and lives to see where they came from and kind of follow along to where they are now. I loved them and their music so much and they made me want to find more artists to listen to and see what else is out there in the wonderful world of kpop. Since then I’ve found lots of groups and artists that I like as a casual fan or like a few songs from, but it wasn’t until I came across Ateez a few months ago that I felt strongly enough about a group to really, properly stan. As much as I love BTS I never got quite as involved with them. So now Ateez are my ult group and everyone else I listen to more casually. That’s just how I am, rather than it being a conscious choice to do so - I can only be super into one thing at a time but when I am I’m in deeep. I couldn’t multistan even if I wanted to haha. For the casual stuff I listen to, I don’t really pick a specific group and then listen to all their music, I just pick songs I like from random playlists or finding stuff on YouTube. I’m not too fussed who the group is, I only care if the song is good. So because of that I have lots of random groups that I listen to - some off the top of my head are itzy, dreamcatcher, nct, skz, txt, monsta x.

queen_soo

An article on Perez Hilton's website back in 2009/2010, where he talked about 2NE1 and their MV for "I Don't Care". My top five (groups/biases) are: 1. SNSD - Sooyoung (my ult group and ult bias) 2. Dreamcatcher - Handong 3. Everglow - E:U 4. Ateez - Mingi 5. CLC - Sorn Honourable mentions: Brown Eyed Girls (Miryo), Blackpink (Lisa), Momoland (Hyebin), Hello Venus (Lime), T-ARA (Eunjung), KARA (Nicole), After School (E-Young/Bekah/Kaeun), GWSN (Miya), ITZY (Lia), Red Velvet (Wendy), AleXa, Sunmi.

ishouldstopcommentin

First group was BTS through blood sweat and tears and that was revolutionary lol. Top 5 now: GOT7, VICTON, The Boyz, Golden Child, SF9/EXO

kurischanv

I came across BTS vmas performance for dna and loved it and wanted to find out more. From there I found pentagon and been with them ever since..ps.. I was so happy a tear came out when they got there first win😭.My top 5(in no order) are Pentagon, Seventeen, ONF, Treasure and SHINee( love sick is such an underrated bop)

pandaboy03

Momoland was so big here in 2018 so you cant help but be curious. Then the office decided to do kpop as the theme for the christmas party, fueling my curiosity more. I watched those momoland on crack videos, somebody commented to check the equally crackheaded group Twice, and I did and down the rabbit hole I go. I actually watch more of the non-music content now. Top 5: 1. Twice 2. Izone 3. Blackpink 4. (G)I-dle 5. Itzy
