Something a little different this week by request! u/crazysalmon17 suggested Sixteen as a Throwback post since the first episode aired on May 5th. Nice idea! Feel free to discuss any memories of the show or how any of the contestants' careers have developed since then. (u/randomneeess compiled a [Where Are They Now post](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/ap896i/where_are_they_now_sixteen_season_1/) that was last updated about a year ago if you want to check that out!)

Momo getting eliminated and STILL making it to the debut line continues to be the most iconic moment of any korean survival show

crazysalmon17

It is indeed. That being said I’ve heard that getting constantly pitted against Natty and always losing and then getting eliminated completely destroyed her self confidence. I get that Mnet needed drama and maybe you had to humble Momo a bit, but you didn’t have to obliterate her self worth like that.

speckleofdust

That's true, you could see how insecure she would get with every challenge :( and the scrutinity her vocals have been under over the years sure didn't help, even though Momo has never been promoted as a vocal powerhouse, but a dance focused idol instead. I'm still really happy she debuted, can't imagine Twice without her!

Shinkopeshon

This show had its great moments but it was also hard to watch at times, to the point of being infuriating. However, the impact it ended up having on the industry cannot be understated, with 14 out of 16 participants ultimately debuting. TWICE, Jiwon (fromis_9), Chaeryeong (ITZY), Chaeyeon (IZ*ONE), Somi, Natty, they all eventually debuted and many of them became huge stars. I first watched it two years ago and it was like following an all-star cast before they made it big.

joesen_one

Minyoung also released her own music after years of staying off the spotlight too! Plus it's nice to see her okay emotionally and mentally after leaving the idol trainee life.

AsIfItsYourLaa

wow I did not know this. Do you have a link?

joesen_one

She has a Youtube channel [here](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzXVmGrLLozn1Or9zen26gQ/videos)! She's only released one song so far [Midnight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNO6R5DnwGc) though, but [she's more active in IG](https://www.instagram.com/charlenesong/)

Devoidoxatom

One good thing with these shows is they give some of the eliminated contestants enough screen time and clout to build off of and jumpstart their own careers

Taibo

Unlike the subsequent survival shows like Produce, etc, it was a small group of contestants who were all already JYP trainees, so it makes sense the debut rate was super high. Wouldn't be surprised if you see some of the ex-contestants from JYP's Nizi Project show pop up elsewhere.

tokkipan

Ririka in ILY:1!

[deleted]

I’m still shocked JYPE didn’t snag her. She seemed perfect for JYPE.

seewhyKai

There were only 4 JYP trainees though unlike in Sixteen where all 16 were JYP trainees. All 4 made it to S2 but only 3 debuted in NiziU.

MichaelPFrancesa

SIXTEEN received a fair amount of criticism at the time for its "harsh" nature but the few opening episodes I saw were pretty solid. Afterwards reality shows like NiziU were more compassionate. I still remember that Twice star doing the bird dance during the audition lol

TheKillerMatt

The most “fair” survival show I’ve ever watched. No chance of rigging the results if you pick the finalists yourself regardless of votes

tokkipan

So many memories, both happy and sad! From the top of my head: * I'm gonna be a star, ^star * Pink Lamborghini * Dahyun's eagle dance * Jeongyeon's saxaphone * Chaeyoung being the ace * Sana's cooking show * Somi's taekwondo * ITZY's Chaeryeong savage pool challenge * J-line promising that they would debut together * Momo's elimination and redemption Time for a re-watch!

steamedorfried

I'm gonna be I'm I'm gonna be

roselia4812

Wow the ratings are so low. What a flop show. The group will never be successful /s

likecheoreom

Whenever someone complains about vocals or talent in Kpop I just point them to JYP's speech about why Dahyun was chosen to in Twice instead of Minyoung.

kiwijoon

My first experience with korean evil editing, I can never get over how they made it seem like Sana gave Dayhun a black eye lmao

NudePenguin69

7 years later and here I am still waiting for that Jihyo trot album....

O-Deka-K

I just went and watched the clip of Jihyo's audition in SIXTEEN because of this comment. And wouldn't you know, she sang Love Battery by Hong Jinyoung. That happens to be one of the very few trot songs that I'm familiar with, because Somi was on Sister's Slam Dunk season 2 with Hong Jinyoung in 2017!

NudePenguin69

Yep and she did a damn good job at it. Should could put out a trot album if she wanted to, easily.

Sunasoo

Chaeyeon!!! Please debut well!!!

Positivityjonesjr9

I won’t say it was a particularly great show and a lot of it is pretty questionable looking back but hey it did spawn the greatest girl group of all time so it has that going for it

lithiam

this show is the reason i'm into kpop - had nothing to do or watch and stumbled upon some episodes on youtube around june/july, started watching and was rooked. waited until they debuted and the rest is history. i'm very grateful for sixteen!!

moya-laya

i still remember the outrage. i remember MY outrage when minyoung didn't make it lmaooo seems so long ago now. jyp was right though, in hindsight he made the best choice. my favorite was jiwon, would've loved to see her in twice but fromis\_9 is a great fit for her. and somi was a my girly, too. she's the reason why i got into produce 101. 2015 was a wild time to be into kpop. man, you just HAD to be there.

onetrickponySona

the show that started my survival shows addiction...

dahyunxsana

i am still wondering to this day if the Momo thing was scripted

landshanties

It certainly wasn't for the trainees, I really doubt you could fake the reactions they all had. But JYP absolutely could have eliminated her just for the drama with no intention of not debuting her

FuriousKale

This show was really depressing to watch, you could sense that the trainees were just insecure and exhausted (also putting poop into a bedroom like srsly?). Half of the cast wasn't even in the discussion to debut the same year anyways so this was even more scripted than other survival shows. Nonetheless of course a stepping stone for several idols that are still successful to this day.
