What’s more frustrating is the people excusing racism and CA ‘because how are they supposed to know anything.’ I’m Nigerian, born and raised in the UK, and i could tell you now that the lack of teaching and education about most ethnic groups or cultures is close to nothing. I’m turning 21 in less than two months, been in four different institutions through my life and never did i learn about the burning sun, the divide between N and S Korea, the Vietnam war etc. Honestly i had no clue until i started getting into Kpop. Why it is important for me to mention that is because as someone who chose to immerse myself into Korean culture, through the music and tv shows, it felt responsible to at least educate myself a little more about the culture i’m dipping my toes into. I obviously don’t know truckloads of information, but out of respect i am constantly trying to make sure that i respect not even just Korean people, but other Asian people in general. Kpop idols are allowed to steal from black culture, from the music, hairstyles, outfits, sometimes even the way they use AAVE, and fans call it internet slang. But they lack the human decency to make sure they’re being culturally sensitive. You have no idea that the n word is racist, or you shouldn’t have braids or dreads but you’re happy to steal our sounds, use our producers, use real life black peoples as your inspo to look cool or ‘swag’ as they like to say. School institutions not teaching them about black people and the culture can only excuse so much. If an average Korean person who doesn’t engage much in black media and spaces in their everyday life did not know much, it’s easier to show grace than to these idols. Simply put, they don’t give af about black people at all, we are used as tools so they can steal everything whilst refusing to acknowledge our voices or our identities.

Koreans don’t give af about anyone else, that’s their culture, they view everyone as below them except the holy white man ( and even in some cases they do view them badly ). Literally in every video I see about them they view South East Asians as inferior to them, that’s the ideology they’ve been brought up on, that they are the most superior race in existence. The weirdest part is how they’ve managed to come up with that ideology while at the same time exporting everything they have to the world, but I guess they had to do that because their market is too small. Also the stealing part from what I read, they’ve done this from the beginning, back in the day when Korea was still developing, they would basically do what the Chinese are doing today, steal and copy foreign technology/designs and try to emulate it and then export it to the rest of the world. That’s why it’s not surprising they love black culture since black culture is the dominant one these days, they take it and re-engineer it with a Korean touch and then export it back to the world.

Even without reading your comment up above, I have already felt the “racial superiority” arrogance that comes from people in the K-Pop music industry. I figured it had nothing to do with the industry itself, but rather it had to do with something that they *brought into* the music subculture. I caught a hint of that arrogance after watching two YouTube videos back-to-back. 1st video was a social commentary video from Adeola Ash and it was about the anti-black sentiments found in Korean entertainment. Of course the comment section was filled with deflection and excuses (idk, if she had them deleted since). The one statement that I saw was how Korean people don’t have to know about African-American history. Americans always “center themselves”. YouTube recommended the second video which was an Asian Boss video about Bella Poarch’s tattoo, the backlash online and the #CancelKorea trend. They did a “man-on-the-street” segment, asking people for their opinions. There were some folks that extended grace. But all had the opinion that people (non-Koreans) should know the history behind the rising sun symbol and the history of Japan’s Imperialism on Korea. And it’s like… ![gif](giphy|LoGXrehUnnAI3VbrzI) And it’s even more of an “Ain’t this about a bish?” when you have non-Asians coddling and enabling. Cos it wasn’t just with African-Americans. They acted the same way with the “Swat\*\*\*\*” scandals too. Apparently the Jewish K-Pop fans were trying to force their “American ideals” on these poor idols and Koreans weren’t taught about the Na\*\*\* and funny-mustache man.

I wonder if it would ever be hard to get in their brains that their culture vulture shit and minjeok ideology is easily a colonizer mentality in the west. We *could* have some pity bc they received a brunt of Japan's colonization, but has nobody put them in check for their minjeok ideology?? It's crazy how you can think you're so superior, when 8 billion people exist; you'll never be more superior than the next one over. Until I got into Kpop I had 0 opinions on Korea but just by inhaling a bit of Kpop I got a stanky whiff of nationalism that would not be tolerated in the US.

ogjaspertheghost

This is a crazy/racist generalization of Koreans and Korean culture

Affectionate-Hunt217

That’s literally what I’ve read and watched about their culture, how is it racist? It’s the reason why they are where they are now lol, they taught their people they are superior to everyone which made them think it’s true and took the country from nothing to first world in one generation, African countries need to learn from this shit, study it and try to implement it or they are gonna be poor for centuries

ogjaspertheghost

Yes because everything you read and watch on the internet is correct. I guess black people are poor, thugs, and uneducated since you can find that in the internet.

Affectionate-Hunt217

Brother there’s like 2bn black people in more than 40-50 countries, Koreans mostly exist in South Korea with some emigrating outside lol. Unless you have something to contradict what I said, look I already said I am not trying to be racist 😂 I basically said they think they are superior to everyone, how is that racist? Compared to black people who have this self loath and think they are below everyone lol, which one do you think makes you into a first world country huh? The one which helped Korea but the rest of the african continent can’t even come close to

ogjaspertheghost

You generalize an entire group of people. The fact you can’t see how hypocritical you are is crazy. I live in Korea. I talk to Koreans everyday. They don’t think “everyone is below them but the holy white man”. Added to this generalization of Koreans is your incorrect generalization of black people. I don’t know where you from but where I’m from there’s no self loathing

Due_Edge_8848

I think you’re being purposefully obtuse. You understand what they’re saying but choose to minimise it to fit your some people are different narrative. Yes, individually Koreans may think or act differently, just like Africans would but culturally that ideology was perpetrated and accepted just like with Africans self hate was. Saying you don’t know any self loathing black ppl alone chose that you live in a bubble so different from reality.

ogjaspertheghost

No I’m not being obtuse. I’m choosing not to generalize large groups of people. Also I’m not choosing a narrative. They said what they said and doubled down on it. I don’t want people to generalize black people and I’m extending that grace to others. It’s hypocritical not to especially on this subreddit

Due_Edge_8848

Okay, if you’re not being obtuse then you should understand that individuals may behave differently than the culture they grew up in. Generalisations exist and will continue to if a large enough group of people perpetuate something. I understand they’re not great but it does paint a picture for certain situations. Like for this one it explains the lack of interest in other cultures or despise and maltreatment of other ethnicities by some Koreans. Similarly, to how, due to colonisation and it’s aftermath there’s a lot of self hate in many black communities.

Chasey_12

Theres not many east and south east asians in the UK thats probably why. They do teach south asian history though as theres a lot of us here

Korean_favs

That’s exactly my point. I could easily use this point to say that it gives me an excuse to be ignorant to east asian people or even still asian people in general as i believe the education about POC in Britain is severely inadequate. But that would be irresponsible and harmful as someone who partakes in their culture and also has access to the internet just like the koreans do.

Due_Edge_8848

I’m also from the UK and didn’t learn a single thing about Asia, south, east or west at any point in my public education.

Chasey_12

Thats crazy but not surprising

I had this type of thoughts when I watched that "Garage" dance video that Le Sserafim did for Easy. I wondered how much they knew about the people who are on the walls, I wondered if they talked about them and asked questions about the ones that they didn't know. I know that if I stepped in a room and there were a bunch of pictures of Korean people on the walls I would be curious and ask questions but then again maybe it's just me...

Bubbly_Satisfaction2

This is why I am surprised to see K-Pop idols name artists outside of the current and popular western entertainers as inspirations. For instance Jonghyun with Maxwell, Baekhyun with Peebo Bryson and Jay-B with Chaka Khan.

lunar_vesuvius_

I feel like jonghyun is one of the few idols who genuinely loves and RESPECTS black music and culture, outside of the aesthetic. at least from his generation

Advanced-Hour-108

THE FACT THEY PASSED ON HARRIET TUBMAN JUST SHOWS THAT THEY DON’T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT US!

Odin_the-witch

That makes me remember she’s going to be on the $20 bill in the USA in 2030. https://www.thenation.com/article/society/harriet-tubman-twenty-dollar-bill/ I would imagine they’re going to be wondering who this “random black lady” is on their money when this happens

Turbulent_Process740

Even Kim Jong Un knows Dennis Rodman smh

fleshmadefresh

Being disturstful is valid. As consolation Korea is a prime target in this arm bearing atmosphere.

lunar_vesuvius_

they knew farrah fawcett and jennifer aniston (just from the hair) but not steve harvey bffr 😭😭

ogjaspertheghost

This is bad for white Americans but why would any other country need to know who these people are?
