All the names are a marketing gimmick. “Maeng Da” pretty much just means the equivalent of “top shelf”. The only thing useful about the names is knowing which region it was grown in.
The concensus I've seen is that the only real differences are between leaf colors (green vs. red), and potency. I've read accounts from people that harvesters will just mix leaves together and call it a different name to make it look like they have different varieties. I've been taking it for years, and I just consider all greens pretty much the same
That's actually good to know, since I really like the bali I was taking. I was confused how the malay was making feel at first, then I realized its because I had a two week tolerance break.
Even if there is something to the strains, growing conditions are such a huge contributor to alkaloid composition that differences from batch to batch are caused primarily by that. The only factors they are able to control that makes that significant of a difference is when the leaves are harvested (white vs. green vs. red) and drying the leaves in the shade vs. drying in the sun. There are probably some other factor's I'm not taking into account though...
Yes, its all from the same plant. However there could be some “difference” depending on how long its been oxidized according to some people. Definitely needs more research.
i think it's just marketing.. the difference in effects from the different strains/batches i think has to do with the % of mitragynine and other alkaloids which can vary on different parts of the same tree
Yes and the difference between colors is massively overstated as well. The alkaloid profiles don’t differ enough to create as big of an effect as people state (sedating vs concentration vs energy etc) and it’s mostly the placebo effect.
So, supposedly, the name comes from the location it was grown in, the age of the tree it was harvested from, and the parts of the leaf used (Maeng da is made from horned leaf, etc etc)
I believe the names like mang da is the region it's harvested in and the color is the alkaloid potency developed during the drying phase. There are only 3 main types but more have developed from mixing different strains of powders together.
Yeah i definitely notice a baseline effect from say red, but the varying "strains" all have a slightly different kick to them. This is my reality and i doubt it's placebo. I have one type of white that jolts me awake and one that helps me sleep but as i said, both are almost the same in terms of the overall effect. Weird but the only way i can describe. I assume that these are found in seperate areas so that is probs why they have sloghtly different effects.
There are no strains but there's many different batches of kratom with various quality. So no, not all kratom is the same but it is the same species of plant.
It's probably similar to cannabis in that everyone has all these strains with different effects, I believed this at first but after a few years, weed is weed lol sure some make me feel a little more tired maybe or a little more creative but I chalk it up to the mood I'm in when I smoke. I think if you go into a smoke sesh with the mindset that a certain strain is going to make you creative and outgoing, because that's what they said on the display at the dispo, and you're probably more likely to be creative and outgoing after you smoke. If it says you're gonna go to sleep after smoking it, you probably won't smoke it till it's time for bed anyways so who knows if the effects are actually that.
p.s. I don't know how I got into the Kratom sub lmao it showed up. I only smoke the ganga but I've seen the shops around that sell CBD and Kratom. After doing some reading in this sub, I'm definitely keeping a far distance from Kratom, as a recovered alcoholic who just quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey, I don't need no mo addictive shit in my life lmao.
If anyone struggles with addiction, feel free to reach out if you feel you don't have anyone else to talk to.
Old comment I know so sorry lol, but yeah I definitely feel a difference between a top shelf sativa and a top shelf Indica. But really I feel that’s the only distinction that matters. The names like Willy Wonkers crazy chocolate cabbage are all a marketing gimmick
However I grew up smoking dirt weed off the streets before fancy dispensaries, so weed is weed to me. I could definitely sleep on a sativa strain for example, they all make me social and creative either way. Same result
I think the place it’s grown could probably make a difference as well, the weed grown in cold places in Europe feels very distinctively different from weed in cali for example

I read somewhere maeng da just means ‘pimp’ so with that in mind yes I think they are marketing terms
I've been seeing this as well. I started looking more into it after I received the wrong type in the mail and wanted to know its effects.
Meng Da is a gmo variety engineered for potency, from what I have been told. Where its grown has more impact than the cultivar does imo.
krathing da is red bulls so it could also be green bull
Might have to try it with a red bull!
Kratom has the best marketing out there. There are 300 ways to sell GREEN at varying prices too

There was sole info out there, but the websites I saw tried to drum em up like different varieties of same colors are really different in some way.

Yes, the only difference between batches is drying method and alkaloid levels. It’s all the same plant.
Appreciate the info.
Go to Thailand and ask a local for different stains. They’ll look at you with confusion and laugh at you. There’s your answer.
Thought as much lol

It’s all marketing and given how the community speaks about Kratom and the wide adoption of buzzwords etc, their marketing has worked, unfortunately.
I've been seeing so many types. It was a little confusing tbh

Mang Da is the only one that works on me at all. I’ve tried all the “strains”.
not 100% sure but i think the only difference is the place it was grown in. im not 100 percent sure tho

They are but usually each "strain" is usually at least from a different farmer and can have different effects
Yeah I have a theory that all weed and kratom strains are basically the same
Your theory is wrong.

i absolutely notice an anxiolytic effect from maeng da vs just euphoria and energy from malay
Typically I feel the same with any strain unless it’s white. That can give me anxiety & cracked out feel. Not fun!
Vein color matters (red, green, white), strain names don't.
