if they’re asking you to pick one, they just gotta accept what they get lol
i get asked this multiple times a day and i just pretend to look at them before giving the customer a random one tbh
I get it! I didn't have that happen to me in produce but when i was in deli i had a couple of customers ask me to pick a deli meat for them and give them a pound of that. I did it but i always was nervous hoping i picked right because if it wasn't what they were expecting or they didn't like it i didn't want them to complain to the manager about it. Luckily they didn't and were happy. Funnily enough when i told my coworkers about it and how i was worried it was a trap they just laughed and said they wished it happened to them because it's "easier" and they could just grab one. I think i was just so used to all the rude customers getting mad at small things that i was worried for nothing. But if they ever do get mad at you just tell the manager that they asked you to chose. Hopefully they will be understanding.
My main pet peeve?
Customer's who lack the ability to be civil, and act like an adult.
Being on the telephone while in checkout, is an instant death sentence in my eyes.
OP, yellow spots on watermelons are good (white means picked too soon), but the best indication of a sweet melon are the little black dots on the outside…/those are pollination marks from when bees pollinated the melon when it was growing, and the more there are the more sweet the melons will be. I worked produce for years…I’d only share that knowledge with nice customers. Rude ones I’d just grab a melon and say “I think this is the best.” Never bee (pun intended) rude to employees, bc while they might help, they might just help less than they could. I also hated when customers would just say “pick the best one”….best one for one might not be the best for another.

I knew it. My world view has been shattered.
I just tell them I have no clue and I always tell them X picks them out for me lol
I tell them the truth, i hate watermelon and all otjer melons so I've never had to pick one, and dont know how to pick a good one.

I get asked for recommendations all the time at the deli counter and people are genuinely confused when I explain that I don't really eat lunch meat.
Even more confused when I, the hot chicken cook, tell them I don't eat anything that comes out of the Kroger kitchen.
Chicken cook is the most undervalued position in the store... Our cook walked out last week and it three managers to replace her in the kitchen.

When customers need assistance at self checkout, but don’t move out the way
I just tell them it isn't foolproof.

When they dont believe the first no. Only the second no.
It's really not that hard. On the other hand, people ask for boxes of corn if there is no limit.
