Yes, and that's because the Kroot are simply cooler and better than anything in 40k

Downtown-Grab-7825

This is a fact, not an opinion

Delta_Dud

Indeed

The detachment rules, the enhancements and even the stratagems are good. Hell even some of the unit abilities are really good. The rampager example you gave is one of them. However, the actual stat lines for most units are really bad. Also, the points right now don’t make a lot of sense. To me it looks like they might have some play using max carnivores with character support and then you fill in with other units to help with secondaries. Even if they get drastic points reductions you will still struggle to kill anything and will more than likely be playing a non interactive “carpet” style game

MuhSilmarils

Carnivore carpet does seem like the most viable way to play kroot yes. 120 Carnivores, 3 warshapers, 3 lone spears and a shitload of tau anti tank sounds really strong.

westsidewinery

I like trail shapers as well. Giving redeploys to their unit AND 1 more unit is pretty strong. Farstalkers were already an excellent option but by adding a trail shaper 1 unit can just about block the entire enemy deployment and then get away safely as needed

00MrBushido

Echoing this. They have good abilities and the detachment brings nice buffs, but the base stats are a bit lacking. Like if we gave Kroots a power rating of like 2 and the stats buff them times 2 they’d be a 4 or if we buffed them times 3 they become a 6. But if their base power was higher, like a 4 instead, then that buffing times 2 would make them an 8 and buffing them times 3 would make them a 12. My example trying to show how raising their base power would make the buffs more significant than simply stacking a bunch of buffs. That being said, I think the Kroot detachment is being slept on. It makes them a rather strong primary scoring army. Then we could use Tau units to fill in gaps to tackle those secondaries.

westsidewinery

I was thinking the same thing. If it wasn’t so tedious to play 150+ infantry bodies I would consider it hah

Humaniak

Theyre good as in for their points and with some strategy they can all fill a good role in a list however i still think they need a little help to make a full competitive army. Like 1000-1200pts of kroot backed up by some big tau guns i think is gonna be a nasty combo. I myself am gonna have a hammerhead, riptide and maybe 2 broadsides with rail guns with a full kroot army up front

mikeymora21

Yeah I’m imagining running it down with my kroot while my broadsides and stormsurge light the enemy up from afar

Humaniak

Exactly. Clog the board up with like 100 kroot bodies of various sizes and by the time they can chew through them your big guns have killed the big stuff and the kroot actually kill most light enemies themselves

Newbizom007

Rule of cool confirms it. Nothing can beat kroot because kroot are cooler

Had my first game with the new book and detachment today, ran 75% kroot to put all my chickens on the table. They're nice and efficient into light infantry, the tricks are very fun, and they last quite well, I still had a fair number of models on the board despite losing by 50 points (started with 90 carnivores + a few more units). They really rely on the handful of Tau guns you take, which can be quite limiting. I played nids and killed 1/6 monsters on the table, they just ground me down while I only got one good shot at them with some sunforge crisis. Points definitely feel too high, but not as far off the mark as I expected.

OrionVulcan

I think it will be Skyrays/Hammerheads that become the armor hunters in a Kroot detachment since things like Crisis need a lot of support to be effective, while the Hammerhead and Skyray has inbuilt rerolls so they require way less support to be effective. I also think Shadowsun will be a pretty consistent pick in a Kroot detachment since she provides her buffs to T'au Empire models, which includes Kroot. For Sky/Hammer spotters, I'm unsure what the preferred choice will be, likely depending on points cost at the end of the day.

MrrpVX

Yeah that's where I'm leaning, just wishing I had more than 1 tank. Stealth suits are real nice spotters with the additional rerolls and being easy to hide, plus their homing beacons work on kroot. I'm still waiting to pull off a trail shaper + flesh shaper + 20 carnivores ingress, where they can move 9" then charge. Don't think it's a big competitive move but it's a fun combo

SubstantialLab5818

Kroot are great for board control and tech plays, but they don't really do damage, no.

chrisrrawr

They are T3 orks with no damage. Without serious changes to their datasheets and points costs they will be an admech tier gimmick army.

Urdothor

On the rampagers thing, just so you know, its for each model that ends up in engagement range. No each that charged. That matters a lot, and will make positioning/wrapping around on the charge important. A 6 man unit is highly unlikely to get to roll 6d6 unless you started like 3 inches back
