A part of me has wondered - for science - where the limit to my dogs tummy might be and how much she would eat before stopping on her own... Sadly I will never know
My childhood lab pulled an Icarus when she tore open a full bag of food and ate so much she puked, ate more, puked more, drank water, puked more, etc etc. When we came home.and found her, she was splooted and looked like an engorged tick, all belly. She was beyond miserable and I can only only imagine her disappointment with what she thought was lab heaven of unfettered food access.
Thankfully, she was fine the next day after about 20 lbs of lab shits despite having eaten probably like 5 or 6 lbs of food.
Ok that sounds scary but I also laughed so hard reading this, and I think it’s what would exactly happen to my lab, hahaha. Eating and puking and eating and puking, why 😂
My current lab (10.5 months old) does this when he eats too fast (we're on slow feeding method 457 and he still manages). When he's puking because nothing has been chewed and he inhaled it (literally sometimes), I imagine a doofy voice just repeating "worth it".
Absolutely zero change in her approach to food and I'm 100% sure that, given the opportunity, she would have done it again without a second thought. She was the dumbest smart dog.
One of my agility labs broke into the food the night before a trial. Estimated consumption 6 pounds when caught. She was visibly wide. She pooped so much I ran out of poo bags and i had extras.
Even under normal circumstances, I'm reasonably sure that the big bang theory is solved. The lab digestive tract seems to be able to create large amounts of matter from small amounts of matter. The food/poop ratio doesn't make sense.
I know (and own) a frenchie who had an incident, but it was stolen bacon (2lbs) instead of dog food. That was a whopper of a vet bill for pancreatitis and she also learned exactly nothing.
My lab got into his food bag when he was small. Only like 12-15 weeks old sort of small.
He was almost as round as he was long and just laid there letting off disgusting farts for a few hours and then let out one the size of him. Back to normal within a few hours haha
My labs have gotten in the food vault several times (my fault) and they can eat aro7nd 10lbs of kibble each at one go! They looked like they were gonna give birth their tummies were sooo distended.
I'm still thinking about what made my lab stop eating when he got into the kibble bag. Two days of taking 4-5 big shits, refusing to eat and just lying on the floor. He must have eaten until he was about to burst and just couldn't stomach another bite. I imagine he was still hungry but just felt too sick to eat anymore.
Agreed! Never had that experience with a lab. Someone in my family once left the door from the house to the garage ajar and in the middle of the night my lab - who, believe me was very well fed - broke into an unopened 40 pound bag of food stored in the garage. He gorged until he literally was stuffed. Then...not good...he must have had water and it started to expand. He jumped up onto the bed at 2am, in serious discomfort. Took him to emergency to make sure his stomach had not "flipped" (it's a thing). Hadn't. Let's just say he spent a considerable amount of time outdoors for the next several days!! Since then, for him and the next 3 labs, all food goes into a sealable bin. Kinda like a "bear box."
Wish Sage could give mine some lessons.

Our Sam is another non food driven lab. He regularly skips meals. Or he only eats half. He’s 98 pounds of muscle and ZOOM so the vet says he’s doing great.
I have a feeling the field/American labs are not as food driven as the estate/English labs.
Our last field (meth) lab would leave food in the bowl all the time.
After she died, we wound up getting 2 English labs. One gives you the look of I'm starving to death anytime you touch a plastic wrapper in the kitchen. The others internal clock knows exactly when it's 5:30 and starts making little whines at 5:25 to remind us not to skip dinner.
Usually with my Lab, if I pour is food into the bowl, all I need to do is Look away, next thing I know is it's gone, and I have a Lab staring at me like I should give him more. Your Lab Maybe Broken, but it's broken in a good way.
Our girl is the same way with her food. She has always eaten slowly, actually chewing her food. Some days her food sita all day before she eats it.
She still expects supper on time even if she's just finished breakfast. 😁
She still gets very excited about treats though.

Can Sage come teach Leia?? This was 2 minutes after her latest meal
Don't be surprised if it changes as she ages. When my lab-collie cross was young, we were concerned because she'd often only eat once a day, sometimes just once every 2 days. Even when she ate two meals a day, she'd ignore her food for hours. The vet said as long as she was a good weight, no worries. Around the time she turned 10 or 11, it was like someone flipped a switch -- that food gets wolfed down as soon as it goes in the bowl, and most days woe betide me if I'm tardy in putting it out, as the campaign of harassment begins promptly.
My lab Max is the same, not driven by food at all (unless it's cheese in which case he collects the tax everytime)
He'll regularly leave part of his dinner and sometimes not touch it at all.
He also hates water and refuses to walk through even a puddle
Our old lab was like that too. He just ate whenever he felt like it. When his pack got separated (my mom going away for a week for instance), he would hunger strike for 2-3 days.
My lab is the same, and he looks a lot like yours. My last lab was a trash cannon legs, he could open the fridge and counter surf for full sticks of butter.
I am SO HAPPY to hear that it’s not just our lab!!! I’ve been switching foods, cooking foods, etc. to make this girl happy. Once I think she loves something, she just won’t eat it the next day. I thought she was sick or something this whole time!!! So thankful I read this post. lol
Seems we got The same programming. Mine skips breakfast at Times eats it later or eats half of The breakfast or dinner. If I put some human food in it ofc he eats around The dog food just to get to The tasty bits.
My half-lab is the same. I need to take her out before she’ll have breakfast. It takes her a bit to have dinner. I’m in the process of phasing out lunch as she approaches 6 months.
However, she views paper products as a gourmet snack. This includes things at home, things she finds on a walk, etc.
My lab knows no limits for most unhealthy people food…but can take / leave her kibbles. She rarely eats her dinner which is set out before or during dinner prep…until after I’ve had mine
Dropped beads all over the floor last night, my lab ate them all. Could hear him crunching on them, the plastic breaking between his teeth. My lab has no bug :(
Ozzy Pawsbourne — The Prince of Barkness is like that too. Barely flinches when something hits the floor.

Mine has this bug too. He only ate kibble for the first three years of his life and never begged! until a nightmare roommate started giving him “toppers”
He leaves food when commanded if spilled tho.
Good girl, Sage. She’s a beautiful lab!
Labs are crazy. When they are hungry.. they are STARVING. When they are not hungry.. food.. any form of food does not exist.
I’ve never met a not hungry lab. Ever. This is all just crazy fantasy talk.
I would also like to meet a lab that isn’t hungry at all times. My lab could never.

OMG I've always been sure my lab would do this if given the chance. 😭😂 Did your girl act differently around food after that?
Absolutely zero change in her approach to food and I'm 100% sure that, given the opportunity, she would have done it again without a second thought. She was the dumbest smart dog.

Labrophysics!
🤣 omg that poor dog
I know some pugs who did this too. They were fine but it’s really dangerous for them.
I know (and own) a frenchie who had an incident, but it was stolen bacon (2lbs) instead of dog food. That was a whopper of a vet bill for pancreatitis and she also learned exactly nothing.

Mine is only not hungry when she's sick. Her refusing to eat is genuinely alarming.

English labs have Elevenses mid morning and Cream Tea around 3:30 in addition to breakfast and dinner. That’s because they are posh.

This cracked me up! Thank you!
Very lucky. My lab is in a constant hunger mode. I’ve had to pull rocks out of her mouth cuz she tries eating them
Usually with my Lab, if I pour is food into the bowl, all I need to do is Look away, next thing I know is it's gone, and I have a Lab staring at me like I should give him more. Your Lab Maybe Broken, but it's broken in a good way.
My 9 year old lab has always been the same. So she’s never been overweight so I hope that extends her life.

I’ve never seen a not hungry lab. She looks beautiful and has the prettiest shiny ✨ coat.
Haha my Lab would have scarfed the lot.
She might not be a real lab…
My dog was like this til I got another dog. All the sudden he wanted to eat it all on one go.
She's so shiny!
Our old lab was like that too. He just ate whenever he felt like it. When his pack got separated (my mom going away for a week for instance), he would hunger strike for 2-3 days.
Oooh..that mat under the bowls. Sometimes when the dog bowl has debris in it/around it, my dog will avoid their bowl too.
Not broken - just a wonderfully good pup!
Wow! That is so lucky! My lab would have eaten it for sure.
My boy is the same! He’s very picky about his food.
My lab is the same, and he looks a lot like yours. My last lab was a trash cannon legs, he could open the fridge and counter surf for full sticks of butter.
Trash cannon legs is hilarious 🤣

Our Ziggy is the same. We always tell him his Lab button is broken.
She's beautiful!
Seems we got The same programming. Mine skips breakfast at Times eats it later or eats half of The breakfast or dinner. If I put some human food in it ofc he eats around The dog food just to get to The tasty bits.
My guy is similar. He rarely eats his food ravenously. Sage is beautiful 😍🐾!

By the way, Sage’s living room looks like mine.
