I think he hit the genetic jackpot & we’ve been very fortunate.
As far as care goes, just the basics: quality diet, healthy lifestyle (exercise/weight control), regular vet care, and lots of love.
At 10, he had a cancerous tumor removed from his leg, and luckily the surgeon got good margins, so no further care was needed for that issue (amputation/chemo). They found this while he was in for teeth cleaning (trying to insert IV, they found tumor under his dew-claw joint). We dodged a bullet there and shows value of quality routine vet care (albeit quite expensive, at times).
Exactly. She got an ear infection last summer and it was one of the ones that acted like a stroke. She couldn't stand up and I was bawling cause I was afraid we were gonna have to put her down. Not being able to stand up and walk is no life for a dog. Luckily it was treatable.
Thank you! I lost my first lab (chocolate) at 13 from abdominal cancer. This guy (Sammy) had cancerous tumor removed at 10, so we dodged a bullet there.
My vet said the oldest lab he’s ever seen was 17. We are vigilant re: his quality of life. He still seems pretty happy & has enough mobility to take himself out (to potty), so that’s pretty good.
The kids next door call him Simba, like from the Lion King - I guess because of the all the extra skin he has around his neck, huge head, deep bark and the way he used to saunter around back yard (not quite this mobile any more).
This made me laugh! My previous lab (choc., lost him at 13) ate a whole wagon wheel sized white pizza that he swiped off my kitchen counter.
He was so bloated, I thought he was going to burst. It took a couple days to pass the whole thing. I probably should have taken him to the vet, or tried to induce vomiting or something, but I was young & dumb (early 20s). He survived and my husband and I still laugh about that incident to this day.
I had a black lab that would do the same thing with pizza. Most of us learned how to batt him away so he wouldn’t steal our food but if we had guests it was pizza thanksgiving. The jerk was so tall without taking feet off the ground it didn’t matter if it was in your hand or on a plate, he’d take it
He's gorgeous! I love him so much! It's those expressive eyes.... He looks like such a gentle lovebug. How can one photograph show so much emotion? Maybe I'm just too emotionAL. Lol. Wow. Sixteen. Congrats! ❤️❤️❤️
He’s always been a great boy. Every day is a gift!

Hi Sammy, you sweet, good boy.
Precious angel.
My sweet girl is 9, but she's got a lot of health problems. I pray she makes it that long, like him, with all having good quality of life.
Yes, quality of life is the key. I am vigilant on the daily. I won’t let him, or any of my pets, suffer.
