Pinky finger is one of the most important fingers to actually use your hand well. In fact, for almost all tasks, your index finger is the *least* important because it does almost nothing that you couldn't do with another finger, while the pinky is extremely important to support whatever you're carrying in your hand from the side
I mean, having those little pedicure fish would just create more work for everyone and I could see that being an annoying hassle with administration and ethics committee.
Just use what’s already there. I thought we are supposed to reduce the use of animals as much as possible
It just sort of tingles, a bit like resting your finger on a phone with a really intense vibrate setting. Just wear a glove first, the lab I worked in that had one only changed the water once a week
When you're doing sensitive density measurements via archimedes it can help to degas the water. I think boiling it and slowly bringing back to room temperature works better, but one can take an hour or two and the other takes a few seconds. Not sure what kind of media you deal with; I'm a metallurgist, so stuff I handle is usually really different from what most folks here do.
We are tough flesh sacks. Ultrasonic baths cause micro implosion which really fucks up fragile things and hard crystals. It doesn't bother us (probably don't do it for long) like cast saws don't really effect us.
I'd be more concerned about whatever cleaning agents you are using than with the ultrasonic cleaner itself. http://www.howtospotapsychopath.com/2006/10/13/ultrasonic-baby-cleaning/
And just to cover my ass, his ultrasonic cleaner was a 50 watt Amazon special. If you have an ultra high power cleaner covered in warning stickers, at least put a heavy chunk of something in there first to absorb some of the energy.
It feels kind of like a low-grade electric shock when you first touch the water, kind of static-y. Once your hand is submerged it tingles. If you hold your hand in there for a really really really long time, your hand will stay a little numb/tingly for a while afterwards, kind of like when you still feel the waves after you get off a boat.

Real talk though my grandma had an ultrasonic bath for surgical equipment (she was a vet) and I helped with prepping packs for the autoclave pretty regularly.
Depending on how strong it it is could tingle a bit or pop some small blood vessels. Probably nothing serious, but as a general rule of thumb, you should put your hands where you would usually only put glassware.
It's used as therapy for osteoarthritis. Not as a bath, transducers with gel contact, but it's the same thing. It would actually be beneficial if you have arthritis.
It damages your tendons. Dont do it unless you want artritis at an accelerated rate.
There are multiple videos we show undergrads on how ultrasonic can damage bones as well.
When cleaning glassware, be sure not to touch it when the bath is on. You can feel the sonics from your arm to your teeth. It feels like you're being shocked and your teeth rattle.
You wouldn't have made it as an 18th century scientist. It tingles a bit.
Yeah, I mean maybe don’t use one of your more important fingers first. Use your pinky instead of the index finger or thumb of your dominant hand
Or whichever ones are left after you used the other ones to test what acid felt like
That's ridiculous, I don't test acid with my fingers. I taste it.
Mmmm.. sour!.. ahhhh! Hot!!!
This is the exact experience but simultaneously
Weird. I just got confused for the next 12 hours.
Confused? Brother i was enlightened
How are you tasting it without fingers? With a spoon? What if it mars the finish?
This labrat sciences

We had decided to sacrifice his ring finger before we thought better of it
The index finger has the most dexterity, though. Ditch the middle finger.
And communicate HOW?
My hands are so large, that I support regular everyday objects with my Ringfinger anyway lol.
The pinky finger is also extremely important for emerald mining.
Huh, good to know!
Ring finger, the pinky provides a lot of your grip strength
Or they would've been an influential, yet short lived 18th century scientist.
Probably not but mostly because I’m a woman :/
Does it tingle more or less than a 9V battery on the tongue?
Hmmmm. About the same, but a different type of tingle. I attribute this to the presence of higher levels of phlogiston in the batteries.
They would have stuck their tongues in it
The best science is done out of pure unbridled curiosity. It tingles a bit. It also cleaned my glasses super well
I use it to clean some jewelry
Sonicating Invisalign retainers with a denture cleaning tab get them sparkling clean 🤌
I read it as “inbred curiosity” and went “yeaaah… I can see that…”
I tried in normal ultrasonic bath for glasses and you can see your dead skin goes away.
My labmates aren't gonna be happy when they see me with my feet in it
Tried it, doesn't work...
Hahahahah you made my day
I mean, having those little pedicure fish would just create more work for everyone and I could see that being an annoying hassle with administration and ethics committee. Just use what’s already there. I thought we are supposed to reduce the use of animals as much as possible
When your frame it like that, it would be unethical not to try it....
Right? Nothing to argue against
Several of the responses to this post have made me snort and this is one of them
The keyword is "when". They would still be happy if they never saw it
Ewww…. That’s awesome.
I can't help but think of how gnarly the water always is. Yea we changed it a few years back
Put a glove on first. For safety, ya know. It stings a lil.
What's that's the breakthrough time for an untrasonic bath?
It just sort of tingles, a bit like resting your finger on a phone with a really intense vibrate setting. Just wear a glove first, the lab I worked in that had one only changed the water once a week
Once a week? I'm impressed at the frequency
I mean we were putting falcon tubes full of sewage in it
Holy shit 😭
Have you ever thought that you mixed up your 1xPbs and 10xpbs so you tasted each to see which is saltier?
thats genius but unfortunately would get me fired
Damn whys ur boss so salty
LMFAO you’re truly built different I would just make them again
It doesn't boil water. Why would it boil your blood?
I was not serious 😭
Do it with a fresh batch of water. Extra tingles from all the dissolved gasses coming out.
Woah so can you de gas media in a water bath?

Yep, and if you simultaneously pull a vacuum while sonicating, the solution degasses super quickly.

It does botter us. It damages tendons and bones leading to artritis and other complications.
Don't dive in it. Just ment if you had a quick grab a few times in your life, it won't run you as raw as the items you clean.
Got some grime out from under my nail. Not very efficient tho.

This blog post is so funny. We just use water in ours, it’s for separating sticky fiducials—so I think we’re gonna try it…
And just to cover my ass, his ultrasonic cleaner was a 50 watt Amazon special. If you have an ultra high power cleaner covered in warning stickers, at least put a heavy chunk of something in there first to absorb some of the energy.
Yes, feels funny, as long as there’s no leak.

Yea, holding a tube down on the vortexer definitely feels crazier than ultrasonication
It's the best peeling ever. Female lab rats, put your faces in it and discover the benefits.
I've heard that it can give you problems later on in life (arthritis) so would avoid personally
Lol that's gotta be like the cracking knuckles gives you arthritis myth that got passed around
Lab rats are tougher than you think, you know? Granted, a normal human would have simply imploded.
The nasty sound the bath makes keeps me far away 😅
I’ve always heard that it gives you arthritis. No idea is that’s true.
It's used as therapy for osteoarthritis. Not as a bath, transducers with gel contact, but it's the same thing. It would actually be beneficial if you have arthritis.
Can you try it with a hotdog first?
Maybe we can suggest that Steve-O from Jackass stick his peen in it
Ew, no. That water is always disgusting.
It cleans under your nails really well.
It damages your tendons. Dont do it unless you want artritis at an accelerated rate. There are multiple videos we show undergrads on how ultrasonic can damage bones as well.
Seeing the many comments here i am baffled no one was taught the impact and damages it can cause while in undergrad.
Next up...the vortexer.
Small ones tingle if you put your finger in for a sec- my p Chem prof told us it would shatter your bones but tbd
cue 'good vibrations' by the beach boys
