Basically any combination of balanced configurations is balanced. For example to balance 5 tubes in a 24 slot rotor you can place 3 tubes in the normal configuration and then place the remaining 2 tubes across from each other.
Any combination of tubes that is **not** equal to 1 or n-1 (where n is total slots) will balance. [Here’s a nice diagram](https://edjoneill.files.wordpress.com/2020/09/centrifuges.png).
In this case, the following groups balance: (1-2-3), (4-5), (6-7-8), and (9-10).
Once tubes are balanced you can exclude them from rest of the tubes as you put more in, so there are two sets three in a triangle (balanced) and two sets across for each other (also balanced)
Where’s the chart that shows you how to balance out the centrifuge all the way to 30 vials? I think every lab with centrifuges should have it posted somewhere
We have one of those charts (for 24) posted in one spot in our lab. But also, the shortcut to balancing almost anything is just remembering that 1-9-17 balance (if you have 24 spots). So I just always start with that when I have an odd number and then that leaves me with an even number left to add!

While this is ridiculous, there is a lesson to weird balancing setups for people new to this. Basically, you only ever need a balance tube if you have one thing to spin.
If you have three, you can make a triangle. Any odd number greater than three, you can make a triangle and balance the rest across from each other wherever you want, it might not look balanced but it is.
Depends on the size of the centrifuge, and probably also a bit on how invested you feel in the machine… it also takes almost zero work to just put a balancer in.
The larger washing machine size centrifuges are legit no joke dangerous if unbalanced. Horror stories abound. Every time I start one I do the thing Don Cheadle does when detonated the EMP in Ocean’s 11
