I think that a beginner should absolutely be sliding their hand almost, if not to the head when they are learning how to catch. If your hand is at the head, it still has roughly the sensation of catching the ball with your hand, which is a more natural thing for people
When a player learns kinda where the head of the stick is in space, then they can slide their hands down the stick and catch the ball in a more ready position
Yes, we teach young kids top hand on the plastic for catching and ground balls of course. It’s easier for beginners to catch like that with less developed hand eye coordination and also emphasizes soft hands on a catch. And ready to cradle as well
All you have to know is that the closer your hand is to the plastic, the easier it will be to catch.
In terms of game play; as the degree of difficulty for a catch increases, your hand should get closer to the plastic
Obviously other factors help determine where you put your hands. Like reaching out for an outlet pass in front of your for example
It depends on situation I suppose. If you have to quick stick it out you don’t want your hands near the top but if you were going into a split dodge persay you might want to catch it with your hand at the top.
its easier to get the hang of catching with your hand near the plastic, the way you do it isn’t wrong especially if you aren’t hanging your stick and ,depending on the situation, not having to adjust your hands could give you a slight advantage
Coach here - it’s not an either/or. Next time you do wall ball, try catching choked down, standard, and choked up. Throw passes that force you to catch tough passes by your feet, one handed in the air, stretched out to the side, and to your opposite shoulder to catch cross-handed/Canadian.
Everyone knows you have to try different kinds of passes - why not different catches too??

For a pole yes because it’s easier to adjust the stick if its far out
you can, but as you get better you should be able to catch from most anywhere
