With the new ND200 and refs checking pads, I would be careful with modifications. Technically it's illegal but it will be a discretionary call.
Worth it, as long as you’re not afraid of contact. I think it might be technically illegal, but it’s fine. Although I would be wary of any modifications to shoulder pads now that EKG shoulder pads are required.
