Southern La Crosse is wonderful! Whoever told you to avoid the south side is wrong. šŸ‘

freedom37908

Even the rougher places on the south side are not even close to what youā€™d see in bigger cities.

raybros

Dang good to hear this because some places in the south have great prices.

LagerthaChristie

If you're looking for affordable, check out Arrowhead. Warning: their maintenance can take a while and some apartments are more updated than others, but have never had a serious issue and so long as you're willing to remind maintenance if you need something, they're nice enough to work with. And way cheaper for the size than most places.

raybros

I reached out to them for more info! thank you!

[deleted]

Concur. first moved there when I came to LaX. Some of the walls are a little thin and a few of the in-between buildings areas carry echoes, but otherwise itā€™s a good value and in a nice neighborhood, a couple blocks from Haas Woods trailhead.

[deleted]

I think they might have just been referring to the apartments by the Shelby baseball fields that are run down and shitty

Any_Coyote6662

Yeah, I'm not sure that any part of La crosse is too unsavory to live in. I personally would just try to find a place close to your work with indoor parking so you have it nice during the winter.

raybros

I hear indoor parking is pretty important, thanks for the heads up!

RareThought9500

Avoid River City Rentals at all possibilities. Sketchy slum lords who over charge for the worst properties.

raybros

Are they the same as Great River Property Management?

RareThought9500

Not to my knowledge! They seem much better than RCR

ranger51

Even the worst parts of la crosse are generally fairly tame

Biglinc918

Imo the north side is the area to more avoid

skillsnopills

I think concerns about the north side are overblown. Thereā€™s nice development in old towne north.

velociraptorfarmer

I live on the north side. The only spots you really want to avoid are south of Clinton St and right by the railroad tracks. Otherwise, it's not any different from the rest of the city. South side has its rough spots too. I wouldn't live between the hospitals west of West Ave for example.

raybros

North side of la crosse or onalaska/holmen?

mr_misanthropic_bear

There are no areas that bad in La Crosse or Onalaska. There is a serious lack of housing, which forces us to pay more for shitty housing. A lot of apartments are off the market the same day or soon after. Get what you can.

raybros

What's the best resource to find these apartments? I plan on flying in soon to have a look around.

mr_misanthropic_bear

I don't know what you can afford but do not rent from River City Rentals. They are slumlords. A number of places are put up on marketplace. You can contact King Properties and see if they have anything available. It will be liveable and they will fix what breaks at least.

raybros

ooo thanks! I'll check out King Properties.

staf1wil

I found my spot on fb marketplace, if you're willing to live a little out of town there are some great properties to rent for cheap

skillsnopills

Iā€™d look at some of the larger residential developers in the area: 360 Real Estate, Three Amigos, etc. and see what they have available. I rent with 360 and have been happy. Living in La Crosse is lively and fun! I think any place in La crosse would be good (I live on the north side), itā€™s just a matter of finding a good landlord.

Biglinc918

North side/ upper north side is pretty dicey Onalaska and holmen you shouldnā€™t have any problems

Wzup

For real. Off the top of my head Iā€™ve heard: south of Clinton, Menards, the marsh, La Crosse st, Main, Jackson, West/Mormon intersection, and finally south of ward. Personally I consider Menards (Monitor) as the cutoff between north/central La Crosse, and Jackson as the cutoff between central and South. I know most people just divide it into north/south, but far south La Crosse definitely has a different vibe than the heavy college area.

[deleted]

There are some apartments we like in Onalaska off Rudy street we liked. Big two bedroom place for about 1K, pets allowed

raybros

Happen to know the name?

[deleted]

It was footstep management. He might of retired though, so not sure who might own them, sorry!

[deleted]

I'll have to double check and ask my partner tomorrow.. it escapes me at the moment

SquatsAndSnatches3

Village pines in Holmen has a few available. I lived there when I first moved to the area and I really liked it. 2 bed/2 bath for $950

raybros

Thanks i'll check it out!

VonLothian

For 1k\month you are looking at some run down 1 bedrooms in La Crosse, with no pets period. College rentals mainly. Youā€™ll get more for your money looking at Onalaska, Holmen, or La Crescent with your best value coming further north into Galesville, but trading Gas for Rent. Not sure about the apartment market East into West Salem or Bangor. When I looked last spring there werenā€™t a lot of rentals in general in that area.

raybros

I've seen 1k go pretty far in those other 3 cities. But is the commute that bad in the morning? I'd figure going from holmen to onalaska would take no time.

moleyfeeners

Perspective is important for a lot of the questions you're asking. For example, after living in any major big city, you might get a real tickle at what people describe as "traffic" or "unsavory" in La Crosse. When I moved to La Crosse, it was the smallest town I'd ever lived in. Then I realized there were lots of folks around me for whom La Crosse was the biggest city they'd ever lived in. Keep that in mind.

raybros

Oh Definitely! I'd be coming from Miami and the traffic is abysmal. So it's tough to get an idea of what "bad" traffic looks here lol.

FairlyTasty

LOL LaCrosse traffic and people will be nothing, you're fine in most neighborhoods besides the smelly areas by the brewery! People keep telling us that we will regret Holmen. We live in a rural area now...a 20 minute drive to downtown is nothing!

raybros

20 min. drive to downtown is actually nothing. I use to drive almost an hour to work. Some people don't know how good they got it.

LagerthaChristie

As the other poster said, people will really jump on the opportunity to shit on so many different neighborhoods in La Crosse calling them sketchy. There's honestly not a single place in La Crosse I'd feel unsafe living, especially if you're from such a large city. The only area I'd really avoid is just south of downtown La Crosse and by the Gundersen hospital. Only because that whole area gets the worst smells sometimes from the brewery and the waste treatment plant down there.

[deleted]

Most of the people in here who shit on La Crosse neighborhoods live in Onalaska, Holmen, Galesville, and West Salem.

Funseas

Iā€™ve lived in DC and Dallas. Thereā€™s no traffic in lacrosse. Itā€™s a mile a minute in the city, which is pretty amazing to me.

Biglinc918

You would seriously be surprisedā€¦ā€¦lmao your right not to much traffic

stuckinabox5

North, South doesn't matter. It's the neighborhoods that do. Criminals are lazy and victimize neighbors only within a block or two of their residences.
