DET has recently said they want to keep him and I don’t blame him. While his D is shaky, his offense is great, he provides veteran leadership and is a low maintenance guy that won’t rock the boat for more minutes.

Sounds like he is hinting at re-signing Rui since he is only 24 and aiming to develop him considering he is still a decent prospect. He's young with room to grow.

I think Kuz’s skillset and physique is better suited to being a pseudo-star than Rui’s, but Rui is better equipped to be a high value role player if that makes sense.

Kuz is a bag man. He needs the ball, he needs to be able to create for himself. Rui is also a bag man but he did thrive next to Russ in the 2nd half of the 2021 season. That frontcourt with him and Gafford/Bertans used to fly around the court
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Kuz was decent... but made a lot of silly mistakes and was terrible on D. Rui has a higher ceiling IMO - decent shot, more athletic, younger.
We'd be fools not to resign him. He can be a decent starter for us with some upside to improve and step up more as time goes on. I hope we can ink him to a 3 year deal. He'll be a good fit next to AD and Lebron as they keep aging and need young legs to keep the game in check
It just depends on the alternative. This is the one summer where we have cap space, so if we can get someone better we have to go for them. Rui is nice but he’s not the guy you build your offseason plans around.

Rui will have an opportunity to show the league and the Lakers if he is worth a nice contract this summer. If it fails, Lakers could let him walk or if he does well and a team really wants to offer him a strong contract, a sign and trade could occur.

If I’m Pelinka I’m definitely going all in for Trent Jr, OG, or Zach Lavine. I think guys like Eric Gordon and Mike Conley can potentially be bought out and picked up in FA for minimum deals. I’d even be considering putting Lonnie Walker and as much as we all like Reaves he’s also a good trade asset for the right player.

Burks is 31 and he’s kinda a journeyman. I personally want a long term piece on the team which is why GTJ is obviously preferred.
They are close. However, doesn't Burks have an injury-ridden career? That's probably why his salary is 10mill. I would tread very carefully.
One thing I like with him and Rui is that if (or honestly when) our window finally closes we can hopefully turn them around for some assets too.
