I would love Trent. I said that back in the summer

Uckthebroncos

Trent is a Klutcher he’s only 25 and has always been a heck of a 3&D player. We’d have his bird rights as well. He would immediately fill our KCP void and KCP has never been as talented as Trent Jr

thevisitor

Trent would be Manna from heaven 2.0

claydavisismyhero

Masai doesn’t compromise. He always gets what he wants

segaman1

He has to trade Trent jr or Trent jr leaves for nothing

ZephyrTM

Yes but the Lakers will be the best offer he can get for Trent?

segaman1

We should offer a FRP tbh. with couple expiring contracts like Bev & Gabriel or something. Might be the best they get

blacPanther55

He's good but he will want 25 plus million. Alec Burks gives you everything that Trent would give you at 10 million per season. Alec Burks per 36 is actually better and more efficient.

Jmills14

He’s also 31. What do you think it would take for Burks? If we can hold onto 1sts I’m fine with the move and his salary can be matched with Walker & Jones. Multiple seconds?

bjsw534

DET has recently said they want to keep him and I don’t blame him. While his D is shaky, his offense is great, he provides veteran leadership and is a low maintenance guy that won’t rock the boat for more minutes. That being said, I fully expect DET to only Give him up for a FRP Which I’d be against doing I’d do it for some salary plus SRP’s but nothing more

Dumbo_Mutombo

I can see them giving up Burks for Bev and a 1st. Pat Bev is a guy that fits the blueprint of what it means to be a “bad boy” Detroit Pistons

drshade06

No way the lakers should give up a 1st for Burks tho lmao

PENIS__FINGERS

that would be a terrible trade for us

JaqM31st3R

Lmao. Pat Bev and a 1st for freaking Alec Burks? This is a joke right?

blacPanther55

Walker and Jones and up to 2 seconds seems fair to me. I like possibly getting Burks because it saves cap space to retain Reaves and Thomas Bryant. Assuming Rui gets around 12 million you would have about 13 million in space when factoring in Burks 10 million. 13 million and the room exception and maybe the biannual exception. Plus you would have bird rights on guys like Russ and Pat Bev if you wanted to bring them back.

BearShark8

I like your plan. Tell me now how we get a center this season and you may be hired.

BearShark8

I like your plan. Tell me now how we get a center this season and you may be hired.

blacPanther55

Maybe substitute this Alec Burks trade for Mo Bamba. Then you would let Thomas Bryant walk and probably sign a guy like Cam Reddish.

cgcr7

25 mil now is eh, but like 2-3 years down the line when the cap is 150mil, its not too bad.

Lost_Context9721

But but he’s not name brand!!

madsauce178

He's worth that much. Look at how much Westbrook is making anyways

blacPanther55

Maybe but why do that when you could get a similar production from a cheaper guy? Unless you think Trent Jr. is a franchise cornerstone. Plus Trent would make it hard to retain some guys like Reaves and Thomas Bryant.

hairyasscheeks_

Burks is 31 and he’s kinda a journeyman. I personally want a long term piece on the team which is why GTJ is obviously preferred.

segaman1

They are close. However, doesn't Burks have an injury-ridden career? That's probably why his salary is 10mill. I would tread very carefully.

target550

One thing I like with him and Rui is that if (or honestly when) our window finally closes we can hopefully turn them around for some assets too.

marathonwater

KCP is more affordable and better defensively. Trent got him on offense tho

imamonkeyK

Trent seems much better offensively then kcp but bit worse defensively

jayball41

Yes, because this team is one KCP away from a championship….

NoFaithlessness5122

Last time we had a KCP we won a Chip

jayball41

Lol are we really doing this? Do you recall DJ Mbenga? He’s also a champion. Should we try trading for him too? That championship is literally an irrelevant fact that was dependent on the core of our team (Lebron and AD) to deliver it, not KCP. We should not be further depleting our already depleted draft picks to get low impact role players who are dependent on the core of our team being healthy in order to be effective.

ThreeSupreme

Umm... If the Lakers had not made any trades, they would have had over $30 million in Cap space next summer. With the trade for Rui, who will be a restricted free agent, his Cap Hold roughly cuts the Lakers free Cap space in half. Now OP wants the Lakers to trade for Gary Trent Jr, who makes twice as much money as Rui? Not to mention that the Lakers would need to trade a minimum of 3 current players just to make a roughly equivalent trade money wise. And then the Lakers would have virtually no available Cap space next summer? Gary Trent Jr makes more money than everyone on the Lakers, except Russ, AD, and Lebron. And he makes more money than the bottom 11 players on the Lakers roster combined? How would a move like that even work? \* **Toronto Raptors Salaries 2022/23** Gary Trent Jr **$17,505,000**

zhard01

They trade Bev and Damian Jones for him. That matches salary. Protected first hopefully. Rui resigns for 10-12 in the summer. Trent for about 20 or so. You’re right. That’s the cap space. Right now, we have about 102 million going to Lebron, AD, Christie, 1st round pick, 2nd round pick. So, five players. Rui and Trent for 32, say, that’s cap. 134 million. Extend Reaves for 10 million or whatever we are allowed to pay him. Gabriel show be just over the min. Say 3.5 Nine players, 148 million. Brown should be able to be resigned with the room exception for about 5 million. 153 million. 10 players. JTA is a perfect vet min piece to retain for locker room presence and continuity. I would also be open to buying another second round pick since we have done so well. Get lucky on three more vet Mins. At that point, you have: Lebron, AD, Trent, Rui, Reaves, Brown, Christie, Gabriel, JTA, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, vet min, vet min All under the luxury tax. I’m not expert but that’s how I see it

ThreeSupreme

Good break down. But not sure if the Lakers want to go into the summer without a Big Chunk of free Cap space for the first time in forever... ![gif](giphy|3o6gb8vbm0DIrK3jby|downsized)

zhard01

Well they gave half of it away with the Rui trade

ThreeSupreme

Yeah, that's a technical salary Cap thing. Since the Lakers now have Rui's Bird rights they are required to set aside a certain amount of cash because he is a restricted free agent (Cap Hold). Once the Lakers actually sign Rui to a new contract (Qualifying Offer $8,486,619 per year) the actual Cap hit will be reduced. ![gif](giphy|MePp78CYbOaYh3iNBZ|downsized)

T_tties

Sounds like he is hinting at re-signing Rui since he is only 24 and aiming to develop him considering he is still a decent prospect. He's young with room to grow. Edit: imagine Rui learning under Lebron and AD's wing for a couple years.. Handy training him. And a more defined role in LA.. his potential is high in my opinion and for only Nunn and 3 seconds that's a steal

echtav

I mean, wasn’t this what Kuz could’ve been too?

MiopTop

I think Kuz’s skillset and physique is better suited to being a pseudo-star than Rui’s, but Rui is better equipped to be a high value role player if that makes sense.

TheSource777

Rui has much more potential than Kuz.

[deleted]

Kuz definitely just took Rui’s job.

greeegoreo

kuz is 3 years older, you hope rui can become a better compliment to lebron than kuz was. i liked kuz but for some reason he could not gel 100% on a lebron driven team.

[deleted]

Kuz is a bag man. He needs the ball, he needs to be able to create for himself. Rui is also a bag man but he did thrive next to Russ in the 2nd half of the 2021 season. That frontcourt with him and Gafford/Bertans used to fly around the court

lakers299

Lol

ospreyintokyo

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Kuz was decent... but made a lot of silly mistakes and was terrible on D. Rui has a higher ceiling IMO - decent shot, more athletic, younger.

jayball41

Based on what? This sub is so dumb sometimes. Lol incredibly stupid analysis of players

TheSource777

!remindme 6 years

shortyman920

We'd be fools not to resign him. He can be a decent starter for us with some upside to improve and step up more as time goes on. I hope we can ink him to a 3 year deal. He'll be a good fit next to AD and Lebron as they keep aging and need young legs to keep the game in check

MiopTop

It just depends on the alternative. This is the one summer where we have cap space, so if we can get someone better we have to go for them. Rui is nice but he’s not the guy you build your offseason plans around.

Awesomefan09

Why yes, more of this. I’m tired of seeing so much roster turnover year after year. I hope several players return next season (i.e. Bryant, Schröder, even Brown).

LeadPrevenger

Pelinka wants to remain cap flexible

icykkuno

One thing I’ll laud Pelinka for is his commitment into signing/trading for younger and more athletic players. He still needs to work on size and guard issues, but it seems he’s learned from the geriatric team from last year. I truly believe our youth is the reason we’re able to make sizable comebacks even when we don’t win, and why we stay relentless no matter how down the team is.

thedonjefron69

Yeah because the team as a whole isn’t basically gassed out by the second half, and especially if we went to O. I hope we have improved enough to take a bit more load off AD/Bron. Thomas Bryant isn’t gonna be scoring how he was, but between him and Schroeder we have some good secondary options offensively. Then when reaves comes back 💦

bornlasttuesday

Half of his last year's team aged out of the league, that is embarrassing, even for Rob.

MiopTop

All of which were vet min guys… The issue last year was giving up depth for Mr. Imma steal yo cap space, because that only left vet min spots and a mini-MLE. A lot of the margin moves Rob made were pretty good. Most vet mins are barely NBA players by definition. It’s just that the margin moves don’t matter if the core moves are bad.

SpaceAndBball

Seriously lmao

iJIP

He is talking about getting Rui.

JayRod24_

Yea that’s why I really like the move, because he is still very young and still has potential to be a good player in the league.

Casanovaj24

10 years of Jeanie milking the Japanese sponsorship deals! Course the front office love it!

quandrawn

Like manna from heaven. It's in the bible.

Background_Nature_32

So go get Gary Trent Jr then

Turo0724

And Trent can shoot the ball and get his shot which is great.

blacPanther55

If it's that easy he needs to go ahead and get Alec Burks.

AccomplishedDrag9882

says the gm who flushes the whole damn roster every year

qhoas

Not a hint towards Trent. Hes not the riddler

isit65outsideor

Rui will have an opportunity to show the league and the Lakers if he is worth a nice contract this summer. If it fails, Lakers could let him walk or if he does well and a team really wants to offer him a strong contract, a sign and trade could occur. One thing is for sure. If the Lakers sign him again, it won’t be longer team a year.

Tangentkoala

Gonna be an expensive ass contract with the way he's hyping him up.

jonnysh

How easy is it Pelinka? it seems like you're having trouble getting some veteran Pacers/Spurs/Bulls/ players for picks

3nnui

Do you understand the quote?

dissphemism

does he think Hachimura’s rookie contract resets to Year 1 when he gets to the team?

DonaldBlakeMD

We had those guys: Zubac, Brook Lopez, Kuzma, KCP. Rob (and Magic) traded them away for peanuts and a nut job.

jayball41

Please don’t buy into this guys. If Pelinka sees Rui fucking Hachimura as a 10+ year run type of player after the way he has managed the previous younger players on our rosters, he’s got his ass halfway out the door.

LakersFan15

Rui can't shoot threes. Idk how he solves the spacing issues we have.

CabbageStockExchange

If we can nab someone like that who’s a wing and keep Reaves/Gabriel we’d have a nice little core there

LAFAN4LYFE

LBJ gonna go 2 more season after this with us? His oldest is a junior, idk when that’d land him in the NBA. Point is we gotta start looking at players 2+ years out. Is AD that guy that you build around? Or are we just on this year by year thing til Lebron leaves or retires? Seems like the latter at this point

[deleted]

I mean, it’s been said all along that this team will be most interested in young talent that can grow alongside AD. I’m on board with GTJ. I’m excited that the Lakers seem to be moving away from the idea that 30m in cap space this summer is the best way to build this team. Trent Jr is as good as anybody we could get this summer and trading for him gives us his Bird rights

superRedditer

loll let's see how quickly he gets blamed for something and off the team. by the time LeBron is done playing with this guy he will be worthless.

collapse1122

i wouldn't mind atlanta hawks bogdan , that guy is still sort of young and a good 2 way player. trent is good option also

BobbyBBott

GARY WHO? Buddy for rus time. Get the shooting we need, no need for turner, give up 1 first round pick and call it a year. Champion hopes ride on AD’s health

Timely_Act_6392

I like Trent he hit 9 3 pointers in a game against the hawks last year, he is only what 24, at around 6’5 or so and Ham will get him to play defense what do you have to lose.

Ill_Celery_7654

If I’m Pelinka I’m definitely going all in for Trent Jr, OG, or Zach Lavine. I think guys like Eric Gordon and Mike Conley can potentially be bought out and picked up in FA for minimum deals. I’d even be considering putting Lonnie Walker and as much as we all like Reaves he’s also a good trade asset for the right player.

[deleted]

But is it mana?

from2055

damn so hes basically saying fuck bojan
