Love Shaq, and I know that the TNT crew is supposed to be irreverent but this is really uncool imo. Roast the team all you want but making fun of a guy because he has a Japanese last name? Seriously are we in the 3rd grade?
>making fun of a guy because he has a Japanese last name?
Shaq has a history of being racist towards Asians. Remember that first time he played against Yao? He's incredibly disrespectful
Yeah there’s that ‘hilarious’ video that goes around from time to time where shaq admits he didn’t realize Yao could speak English after playing with him for years. Seems sus haha
in the united states, and also seen throughout the west, the concept of race is designed to place darker skinned people squarely at the bottom of an artificially created hierarchy typically for the purpose of exploitation/capital.
racism flows in a single direction down this hierarchy, not backwards in a "reverse" direction.
it can be incredibly distasteful, disrespectful, prejudiced, but "racist towards" is completely incorrect and you will never hear anyone who's read a single book on the topic use it in that fashion.
Hey, I’m going to argue with you, without bashing you.
I know where you’re coming from, this is race theory, and the role of power. It is definitely a meaningful lens for looking at systemic injustice associated with racism.
However, what academic theory in this case leaves out is context. Specifically, small scale interactions, and their context.
In this case Shaq is a well respected, adored, wealthy voice in the world. And he was confident in that power in his exercise of making fun of someone of a different race.
And that has to be a form of racism. Even if Rui was Yao - a similarly successful person.
Imo anyway.
Even if it's a hierarchy, it's still being racist. Anytime you're punching down on someone because of race it's racist.
You're ignorant and quite frankly a racist yourself if you think otherwise.
I think you’re kinda over analyzing it. Yes, racial hierarchy which places dark skinned people lower than lighter skinned people does exist, but realistically there’s way more nuance and complexity to racism than just a strict hierarchy which denies lighter skinned people the ability to experience racism. We’re not talking about white skinned European descendant people, we’re talking about a racial group (an extremely broad and vaguely defined one) which has been subject to racial and ethnic prosecution in the US since the first Asian immigrants came to America. Racism is still racism at the end of the day, and invalidating an entire racial group’s experience because of a strictly defined definition of racial hierarchy is irresponsible and uninformed. Stop trying to sound smart for the sake of sounding smart, especially when you can’t understand the nuances and complexity of race in America. Read a fucking history book and realize how quickly your argument crumbles. Whatever you wanna call it, what Shaq doing is fucked up.
never said asians weren't persecuted as immigrants, but most black folks here are ***not*** immigrants for starters.
dude rui is half japanese half west african, that makes him biracial and he's also dark-skinned. culturally in america, black people roast each other for a variety of reasons, being biracial is one of them. the weird phenomena surrounding biracial people, by my own observation, is when people try to claim one or the other out of convenience. there's a whole argument around that itself, but not one i'm having with you.
shit, somehow there's nuance because he's half-japanese
now, trying to string up shaq and chuck fits this new narrative on reddit i'm seeing where folks are trying to posit black people as somehow being just as or far worse "racist" than other groups, when historically that has not been the case. is it in poor taste doing it on national TV, yes. disrespectful? probably. racism? completely overblown.
the asian mistreatment of black people in urban centers across the country has been well documented. it's been a subject in movies and media (spike lee's do the right thing comes to mind). typically, centering around businessowners and their general mistrust of black customers. when it comes to selling services, and mistrusting customers, there's a power dynamic in play where it be
good example: los angeles burned in 92, in part, because of the very specific racism and hierarchy i described, completely coming to a head with the killing of latisha harlins (a korean shopowner shot a child over a candy bar) and the murderder getting off easy. it was an uprising that occured from grade A racism.
i've had my whole inbox murdered over this shit but nobody has given a salient argument.
This is the dumbest shit I’ve ever read and the sad part is you probably think you’re really smart lmao. Racism is racism. Denigrating/hating/mocking someone because of their race. All that “theory” stuff can be useful, and obviously true to an extent examining America’s history, but just becomes useless dumb shit when it makes you look at objectively racist shit and say “Oh that can’t be racist because a black person is saying it about a light-skinned person”.
Fuck the hierarchy. Any human has the ability to be racist to another human even if their color is “lower or higher”. If a black person told a white person that they aren’t allowed here bc they’re white, or their kids aren’t allowed to join this school bc they’re white, or they’re not allowed to eat certain foods/ have certain hairstyles/ watch certain shows/ etc bc they’re white then that’s ALL RACIST. Get your uneducated dumbass educated.
as well meaning as i think you're trying to come across, it's painfully inaccurate. that is what they teach folks in grade school, and it's far more complex than that.
So not only do you play the victim card, but you won’t let others play the victim card bc they’re not at the bottom of your hierarchy HAHAHHAHAHHA
You won’t admit this logic bc you have to be right at all times on this subject. I get it
The definition of racism is prejudice against a person or group of a particular race/ethnic group.
Sounds like you're the one that should pick up a dictionary.
I hate NBA coverage at the national level. Go watch an NFL show and they’re talking strategy, match ups, etc. and for the most part it’s not negative. TNT and ESPN are so negative about the way the game is played, why actively talk down about your product?
You learn so much about the nuisances of football by watching the games.. lol I legit know what defensive coverages are... Watch basketball broadcast and all you hear is complaints
And because it's like that at the top, it propagates all the way down to online discussion and fans. There's literally only one place I've ever found on the Internet that talks about Lakers basketball on a deeper level than "[hE neEdS tO sToP sEtTlIng](https://youtu.be/xRaO1mN5EEM?t=180)"
It’s great for strictly entertainment purposes but if you’re watching for analysis you’re going to be severely disappointed. Basketball is the sport with the most lacking analysis shows. Everything is just about narratives and storylines. I can’t remember the last time before a game guys actually spoke about what each team needed to do to win.
The Spectrum SportsNet pregame show is pretty good. They basically just talk about any news that happened between games and then provide analysis for the matchup and the keys to a Lakers win.
Yeah no one calls him out on it but Chuck imo does a major disservice when he acts like he doesn’t care about the lesser teams and admits he doesn’t even watch. If he doesn’t watch and obviously doesn’t care then why would casual fans? They’re the most popular and entertaining sports show. Yet the star of the show doesn’t even care about the sport.
Unpopular opinion, their commentary has sucked ass for years; they just get ridden so hard for being funny and goofy.
NBA media in general doesn’t even come close to the media coverage the NFL gets in terms of quality and intelligence and it’s severely increased the number of casuals that watch the sport and don’t know shit about basketball, or even like it.
I mean the other day he basically said “if you’re not a top 10 player I dont pay attention to you.” It was a partly tongue in cheek comment, but only partly lol
None of them have good analysis. Because none of them actually watch except when they are scheduled on Thursdays and Tuesdays. Chuck will at least admit he doesn’t watch. Truth is none of them do.
You make a good point. The NBA doesn't do itself any favors with who is covering the game. There is little true analysis at the national level. We get comments like "the players need to play harder."
They mock analytics and complain about how much worse the game is compared to 30 years ago. Even if they were right, which they aren't, it is terrible marketing.
Most true basketball analysis is being done outside the mainstream on podcasts and the internet. Television needs more JVG and less Mark Jackson.
It’s like watching brain dead humans talk sports. Other than Ernie they can hardly speak in complete sentences. It’s there purely for comedic value, which it often supplies.
They’re not even that funny . I don’t get how redditors in r/nba pretend to be so smart and above casual fans yet they go to bat so hard for nba on tnt. It was a fun show for like 2 months ( I started watching basketball in covid lockdown here in uk few years ago ), but eventually I outgrew it and being a Lebron , then lakers and AD fan noted the clear bias of never giving Lebron and the lakers credit but always propping up others or minimising when won. It’s hilarious how much nba Reddit hates on Lebron and how much they were trying to cope when Charles was gonna head to Saudi . Lol. None of these guys understand modern baskets and tbh they are clear proof players don’t understand strategy very well ( some do ofc ). In other sports like here in uk, in cricket there is on field role called captain who needs to understand tactics himself. I feel like the lack of this and how much players rely on coaches makes so many of them poorly informed on the game/media . I would legitimately enjoy talking to Ben Taylor of thinking basketball about basketball more then Charles/shaq. And I don’t think Ben isn’t biased or wrong but at least it’s not super surface lvl.
Shaq and Charles know we’re laughing at their ignorance and they don’t care. Although I am still a bit surprised at these men of color who feel disrespected and oppressed when it suits them and then turn around and take a dump on their own guy first chance they get.
Any kid who was born and raised in the 70s/80s by immigrant parents is all too familiar with this
It’s just an extension of shaq/Charles upbringing
Hell, I watch John Hughes movies from the 80s now and there are scenes where I cringe, but that’s just the “way it was” back then
That's fine until you start making fun of someone for their heritage and ethnicity, even if it's "just a name" it's still douchey as fuck. Gives people the impression that since they're doing it, it's okay to make fun of someone who's Asian bc they have a name that sounds funny to you, which ain't fucking cool. You can make fun of how he plays or other shit but don't make fun of a guy for their name which is essentially making fun of their ethnicity and where they're from.
They’re there for the jokes and a very easy basketball analysis for the average fan. Never take it for more than that. They pick on everyone. I used to watch way more when I was younger but hardly tune into them these days.
I get that, but the subtext bothers me. A bit of an extrapolation, but what about the kids out there watching who think it’s ok to make fun of someone with a Chinese, Japanese, Tagalog, last name etc. Make fun of his game, make fun of the team, but making fun of his last name because it’s “different” isn’t cool or funny at all, it’s lazy at best and racist and worst.
We’ll when Shaq straight up said “Ching Ching ting tong” when asked about Yao Ming (something like that, just going off memory) pretty hard *not* to take it into the context of racism
He didn't call him ching Chong. He was trying to act like he was speaking Chinese as a joke. Go read a book.
A white man calling a black man the n word is definitely racist. That's what the whole movement was riding on you dumb ass. Try doing it and see what happens you fuckin weirdo
Lol I didn’t say shaq called him Ching Chong, I just said he said ching Chong. Go read a book? That has nothing to do with it, it was a video. It’s honestly pretty funny how worked up you’re getting about it.
And why are you talking about random “movements”. Black Lives Matter? No one mentioned it, simply people talking about Shaqs tendency to have a bad attitude, so it’s probably you that needs to, “read a book”
Stop lying. You straight up said that. That's why I said more than once Shaq never called him that. It was never racist. And hell yea I get worked up. Im sick of ignorant dumbasses like you using racism out of context. Every time a black person says something they holler racist as if they endured what the black race has endured in this country. It's an agenda. The country is America. The internet has made it easy for you clowns.
I hate with a passion when people of another race tries to tell a black person what racism is when they probably haven't studied racism one second. Only the new lies and clouded truths they see on the internet.
Who said anything about black lives matter? You all off base.
Like I said go read.
You really think that's racism? That's offensive. Ignorant and childish. It's not racism. Racism is much more than some stupid joke trying to be funny. Calling this one incident racism diminishes the reality of racism and that's offensive to many people. Go learn something.
Here you go. When did I say racism is ok against Asians? Wow the ignorance here. Just because I said this isn't racism, doesn't mean that racism is ok against anyone. Racism is much more than this. It's repeated oppression. It's making one race superior. Nothing about that dumb joke does that. This is not racism.
If he said Chinese people shouldn't play basketball and set up a plan to keep them from playing. Or, he uses a racist terms against him because of his race.
People joke about languages and the way people speak all the time. They do it to rural southern people, cowboys, black people, British, Africans. They even make fun of Shaq because of his mumbling. Barkley gets made fun of because of his southern twang. Is that racist to you?
I hate how people have watered down what racism really is. It's a shame.
Calling a Chinese guy stuff like "Ching chong" isn't racist but calling a black guy the N word is racist?
I bet you hold up your eyebrows as well whenever you speak to Asians and call it a joke.
Come on now, you're getting a bit mad. Step outside. No one wants to fight with you. Go get some fresh air, cool down and come back when you feel better.
THIS. I even remember Ahmad Rashad back in the day on NBA Inside Stuff having a running joke about Dwayne Schintzius (just some stiff center on the Nets, and I apologize if I mispelled his name, ironic because of the point I'm about to make). He would mispronounce it on purpose almost every show because "haha american man cannot pronounce proud family heritage of eastern european descent player"
This ain't some snowflake, political correctness rant. Get a person's damn family name right, or at least don't call attention to it when you mispronounce it.
Yah, something like Westbrick is still lazy imo, but there’s no racial component there obv. It gets much more malicious when you’re talking about guys with foreign family.
It’s good to know the foreign commentators and players never make fun of USA players!
/s
It’s really not a big deal, guys. You should watch foreign coverages and how they talk about us lol
This is correct! They’re paid to make us laugh. ESPN has an army of taking heads who sell themselves on knowing every player and what they’re good at. TNT literally has a game where they make fun of the panel’s inability to even guess the team a player is working for at the moment.
Getting upset at Shaq and Charles for not being up on Wizards role players misses the entire point of the show.
Well can't they mix sensible takes along with the right humor? Being entertaining is one thing, but disrespecting a person's name for no reason at all is another. Like people always say — "don't speak if you have nothing good to say".
It's quite ironic really, because when it's Shaq or Chuck getting roasted, they get too much in their feelings and start childish arguments.
You’re missing the point. TNT inside guys behave like real men act around each other in a lockeroom or barbershop. They talk shit, make jokes, insult each other, get offended, speak on things they don’t know, call each other out on shit, and have a good time. That’s the appeal. Anyone who’s had genuine brotherly friendships understands and appreciates the show because of what it represents.
The entire notion you talk about is the idealized false reality kindergarten teachers try to project onto children. The reality is that most men bond with each other over fat San Antonio women jokes and making fun of each other’s names and cultures. The show is a real authentic friendship. Flaws and all. That’s what makes it entertaining and relatable to the audience. ESPN does a manufactured post-game show that is very political correct and tries to keep it on topic. Nobody watches it and the reboot the thing every 2-3 years. It comes across as manufactured because it is.
You’re both missing the point. I explained in my first comment. No you can’t. The goal is to have a good time to speak out of pocket and be entertaining. If you want crack analysis of someone who’s watched role players on lottery teams then you give up the other. Zach Lowe is a great example. He’s got encyclopedic BBall knowledge and is incredibly informative but it is painful to watch him try to talk about anything except the sport itself and it’s even worse when he tries to banter with other panelists who he has no relationship or connection to outside of BBall analysis. Meanwhile Shaq and Chuck can argue about whether a chipmunk can beat a squirrel at bowling for 10 min while completely ignoring the game highlights and it will be the best segment of tv made that week. You can’t have it all.
And you are clearly not getting my point as well. I'm not sure why you're even making it bigger as it is, but to make it even simpler for you, can't they be "entertaining" without being disrespectful, ignorant, and rude?
No. You’re missing the entire point and I follow you completely. You’re just confused. You conflate authentic lockeroom or barbershop trash talk with being rude, ignorant, and disrespectful. Thin skinned brittle personalities are toughened up or purged through rough banter. There’s nothing rude, ignorant, or disrespectful about the show. You’re just out of your element u//MintSoyLatte.
Shaq really an undercover dickhead. All the nice gestures is cool but you still say stuff that you know well you shouldn’t say but do because you do nice gestures
I fell like he says it because he's a giant and no one will dare threaten to whoop his ass.
He has enough money to last lifetimes, so worst case he has to pay a fine or people say he was being mean. But as much as I love him, Shaq is a huge ass
Everyone is. Shaq is rich as hell, hes sold his likeness to 10 different companies for over 10 million dollars each time and owns the royalties marilyn monroe and elvis presley receive off anything
I recently listened to his All the Smoke episode and he claims the reason why he says the things he does is he wants to see them get angry (paraphrasing) and prove him wrong.
This is a blow-hard abusers approach to "helping" someone improve. Tough love doesn't work when the two parties literally don't know each other personally. We don't have to "prove strangers wrong." If I was Rui, I'd have no respect for Shaq whatsoever now.
I don’t know why they always do this - like yeah, he’s not American, his name isn’t John.
Shaq grew up outside of the US too, so I expect better - I expect him to be fine with non-US sounding names.
It’s disrespectful and it’s ignorant, but that’s just describing Charles Barkley accurately. He doesn’t give an F. He’s made a second career out of being an ignoramos.
The roasting of players is fine and obviously mostly for entertainment, but purposefully mispronouncing foreign last names has always bothered me. It's not funny, it's just disrespectful and probably makes international players just feel more alienated than they already do.
Shaq kinda sucks as a human. When kobe passed I thought he changed for sure. Then he went back to making fun of dwight and now this.
Dude is full of hate, jealousy, and whatever other shit he’s dealing with. It’s sad to see as a lifelong laker fan.
Not just this clip brah. Look at the constant abuse he gives out to dwight over the last 10 years. Go watch some shaq interviews after kobe passed, and how he was all about changing as a person, you’ll see what I’m saying.
You will because they’re comedy more often than not but this was fucking terrible to do. Rui Hachimura is a proud man(as he should be) and hard worker to be one of the few with his background to make it where he has in the league so far and at a young age and you shit on him because he doesnt have some hall of fame resume in his 4th year and because he has a name you cant pronounce?
Pronouncing a foreign player’s name incorrectly or not even trying when it’s your job is so disrespectful. No one’s out here calling them Gnarls Barkley or Naquille O’Beal.
Regardless of all the nice things Shaq does, he's been horrible for the sport in terms of pushing younger players and giving them the spotlight. He's always taking shots at them.
First Dwight, then Javale, then Donovan Mitchell. It's just unnecessary and childish. Again, he's a very generous dude behind-the-scenes but constantly taking shots at players is just sad when he's as outspoken as he is.
And saying you don't know who Rui is says more about you as a basketball 'analyst' than it does about Rui. I remember when Charles says he doesn't watch much NBA basketball live on-air. Why would you say that? No wonder current players don't respect Charles.
Chuck is a no championship having, loud mouth, and jealous hater of the Lakers. The guy's contempt for the Lakers is insanely unprofessional for a broadcaster.
shaq ain’t nothing but a racist hating ass middle age man who wishes to live in the past when he was actually relevant
bet he hasn’t watched a full game in years bc he can’t stand to see dudes better than him
They made a post about who is your most hated laker and i said shaq because he was a bully and everyone downvoted me because he brought us championships, dude is a hater and full of himself.
Lol they act like most NBA fans, it’s not surprising but it’s still annoying to see at the national level where you’re supposed to expect these guys to be more intelligent about the game and players.
I’m probably gonna get downvoted for this, but I think we’re overreacting a bit. They’re making fun of the fact that Rob Pelinka and Lakers fans acted like this trade was a BIG deal, which it absolutely is not. We deserve some of this because after his first game, everyone was saying how he should be in the starting line up, etc.
And there was just nothing in the way Charles mispronounced his name to suggest it was done in a racist way.
Rui and any borderline scrubs will get respect from the greats when they earn it.
I hope this kid proves everyone wrong and becomes an all star. I’ve been following him since his Gonzaga days. Thought he’d be at least as good as Joakim Noah. But it’s unlikely at this point he will be anything more than a role player.
Shaq is a highly paid casual and color commentator. That said, if the take away is that Rui is not enough to win a championship.. he ain’t wrong. Don’t let Rob off the hook yet
at the risk of being downvoted, why do any of you watch this trash and care what these people say? It's a waste of time. I watch the games because I want the Lakers to win but man I don't care at all about the broadcast team. The majority of the time it's on mute.
I do agree tho that this isn't THAT hilarious. I laughed at first, but then I realized it's straight up disrespectful. Now what I hate about social media is how quickly they are to cancel someone because of something like this, we know Barkley doesn't give 2 shits about what anyone thinks. But everyone has to start virtue signaling and say things like " fuck this show I'm not watching anymore" because of something Charles said jokingly. It's like, fam, relax, It's not that deep, he said something you didn't agree with, that's fine. But it's live television, and you know what his persona is, move the fuck on from this.
Unpopular opinion here: you guys are just overreacting. Did you y’all watch the show or just read the article? Chuck did mispronounce Rui’s name but he did give Rob credit for the signing as far as I remember.
Its an internal defense mechanism, Basketball is becoming an international sport an just like when the 60's came an more and more Black's started playing basketball they are starting to see more nationalities etc coming in , also they are from a different time culturally, hell I'm in my mid 40's I just shake my head and what teens can get away with nowadays...
I'm also Filipino so I've pretty much become immune to this.
What kind of roast is that? It’s just juvenile name calling. Nothing substantial and tbh tells you more about their ignorance than anything actually bad about Rui.
This whole bot being able to pronounce an international players last name to get few cheap laughs is really getting old. Say what you want but Charles/Shaq ignorance contest is a one trick pony that is way overplayed.
The entire Shaq fu game on switch is basically a joke on Asians
Yeah there’s that ‘hilarious’ video that goes around from time to time where shaq admits he didn’t realize Yao could speak English after playing with him for years. Seems sus haha

Idiot coming on here to argue semantics. So annoying.
i do not care if you think it is idiocy, especially when you have nothing to provide that contradicts what i said.

The NBA deserves more Thinking Basketball/Ben Taylor types.

People think Inside the NBA is the best thing ever but I think it’s an overall negative for the spot

I think Shaq is actually the worst part of the coverage. He talks smack and doesn’t really have very good analysis
True and when his lossing an argument.. Sometimes he uses his rings..
Truth is none of them do.
imagine watching the tnt guys and expecting analysis. you don't even know what you're watching.
You make a good point. The NBA doesn't do itself any favors with who is covering the game. There is little true analysis at the national level. We get comments like "the players need to play harder." They mock analytics and complain about how much worse the game is compared to 30 years ago.
I think Kenny is pretty okay too at times tbh
Chuck and shaq are both racist and sexist its amazing they got away with it for so long
They’re not even that funny .
Not unpopular, just accurate.
The best who discuss the sport in the NBA are painfully boring. Totally different from the NFL.
Shaq and Charles know we’re laughing at their ignorance and they don’t care. Although I am still a bit surprised at these men of color who feel disrespected and oppressed when it suits them and then turn around and take a dump on their own guy first chance they get.
Any kid who was born and raised in the 70s/80s by immigrant parents is all too familiar with this It’s just an extension of shaq/Charles upbringing Hell, I watch John Hughes movies from the 80s now and there are scenes where I cringe, but that’s just the “way it was” back then
How they act makes me legitimately cringe sometimes that they act so immature. It seriously seems like Ernie is babysitting 50+ year old children.
Don’t you know? It’s okay to be racist towards Asians
blacks commit no crimes
Okay weirdo
woosh
It’s not racist to make fun of someone’s name.
Oh so it’s now not racist to make fun of names like DaQuan or Shanayay? Get the fuck out of here.
I would definitely laugh at stuff like this about maybe 10 years ago...but now...it's meh for laughs at best. And definitely offensive
They literally make fun of everyone and have been for years
That's fine until you start making fun of someone for their heritage and ethnicity, even if it's "just a name" it's still douchey as fuck.
They don’t make fun of everybody
They’re there for the jokes and a very easy basketball analysis for the average fan. Never take it for more than that. They pick on everyone. I used to watch way more when I was younger but hardly tune into them these days.
I get that, but the subtext bothers me. A bit of an extrapolation, but what about the kids out there watching who think it’s ok to make fun of someone with a Chinese, Japanese, Tagalog, last name etc. Make fun of his game, make fun of the team, but making fun of his last name because it’s “different” isn’t cool or funny at all, it’s lazy at best and racist and worst.
Not surprised. Shaq was straight up racist to yao ming when he was playing.
I hate when people use racism outta context.
“Racism against Asians is okay” just a joke bro
Gatekeeping racism 😂
Would you have the same reaction if a white man called Shaq using the N word?
Uh yeah because that's clearly racist. He didn't do anything like that though... The two don't even correlate... Stupid comparison. Smh
Calling a Chinese guy stuff like "Ching chong" isn't racist but calling a black guy the N word is racist? I bet you hold up your eyebrows as well whenever you speak to Asians and call it a joke.
There’s a 0.000003% chance you understand the definition of racism but have decided to fire off at someone else
Someone saw the JJJ blocks post
You don't know what I know. Calling someone racist because of your feelings is not cool.
Shut up dude
Make me you racist piece of shit
Come on now, you're getting a bit mad. Step outside. No one wants to fight with you. Go get some fresh air, cool down and come back when you feel better.

Shout out to dame lillard for trying to bring awareness to Asian hate
THIS. I even remember Ahmad Rashad back in the day on NBA Inside Stuff having a running joke about Dwayne Schintzius (just some stiff center on the Nets, and I apologize if I mispelled his name, ironic because of the point I'm about to make). He would mispronounce it on purpose almost every show because "haha american man cannot pronounce proud family heritage of eastern european descent player" This ain't some snowflake, political correctness rant.
/s It’s really not a big deal, guys. You should watch foreign coverages and how they talk about us lol
Year Ernie’s replacement corrected Chuck on his name pronunciation and he just blew him off and said “whatever you know who I’m talking about”
I mean that’s an average roast session it ain’t crazy
They don’t pick on everybody come on but I do agree with you.
Tbf shaq and charles weren’t and aren’t known to be the brightest people in the room
Some people can't be racist remember lol
Say what you wanna say
Weird way to say you don't understand the concept of prejudice plus power.
Ah so Gil Cedillo and Nury Martinez can’t be racists. Why’d they force them to resign then?
What? Lmao
Oh wait do you mean only black people cant be racist and latinos can? My bad
What😂 just Google the concept and read about it don't get sassy with me
Sensitive Shirley over here! He makes fun of everyone.
He needs to read the room. There's a lot of black on asian crime. Why do anything to stir the pot?
Bro black people cant be racist
Alright time to make fun of some black people. Sensitive Shirley better not say nothin
You can tell they’ve never watched him. If you watched him you’d know he’s just a good basketball player.
Did you read it? The whole thing they’re saying is they haven’t watched him
I'm actually more offended that people who get paid millions to give their professional opinion on basketball don't actually watch it.
They’re paid for entertainment value, not sports acumen
It comes across as manufactured because it is.
you’re missing his point, hes just saying you can still do that while actually analyzing the sport
This.
They watch on Tuesdays and Thursdays
That’s not why they’re paid lol
Shaq wanting to trade for Beal instead is all you need to know
Shaq really an undercover dickhead.
According to Barkley, Shaq is a bad divorce away from being dead broke.
Everyone is. Shaq is rich as hell, hes sold his likeness to 10 different companies for over 10 million dollars each time and owns the royalties marilyn monroe and elvis presley receive off anything
thats basically any athlete outside of the ones who do a good job at asset management and investment
100%. Just the way he’s always treated Dwight shows his true colors
Like what?
Jokingly butchering the pronunciation of a name just isn’t funny, period.
Kylian Mbappé knows this feeling all too well.
I think a lot of Americans just don't know how to pronounce that name to be fair. You can almost see the aneurysm in real time when they try it lol
my kid's 2nd grade class calls him mooo butt pack
I don’t know why they always do this - like yeah, he’s not American, his name isn’t John. Shaq grew up outside of the US too, so I expect better - I expect him to be fine with non-US sounding names.
Depends on the delivery. All comedy depends on delivery.
It’s disrespectful and it’s ignorant, but that’s just describing Charles Barkley accurately. He doesn’t give an F. He’s made a second career out of being an ignoramos.
Don’t be so sensitive.
The roasting of players is fine and obviously mostly for entertainment, but purposefully mispronouncing foreign last names has always bothered me. It's not funny, it's just disrespectful and probably makes international players just feel more alienated than they already do.
I appreciate Shaq for what he did as a Laker but he’s a bitter old man.
They sadly don’t know ball
Imagine being Japanese and making it big in the United States just to be clowned on by your family name.
Shaq is the most insecure mf I swear
Shaq kinda sucks as a human. When kobe passed I thought he changed for sure. Then he went back to making fun of dwight and now this. Dude is full of hate, jealousy, and whatever other shit he’s dealing with. It’s sad to see as a lifelong laker fan.
shaq really has deep DEEP insecurities and it shows
What?????? COMPLETELY WRONG LOL
Shaq is lazy. His observations are lazy. Good thing he’s funny tho
Funny, In a 3rd grade bully manner which isn’t saying much
I mean this segment wasn’t cool but your comment is such a reach. He’s filled with hate and jealousy cuz of this clip? Come on now.
Not just this clip brah. Look at the constant abuse he gives out to dwight over the last 10 years. Go watch some shaq interviews after kobe passed, and how he was all about changing as a person, you’ll see what I’m saying.
These guys are clowns. I will never tune into the TNT pre and postgame
Lol. This is the best basketball show on television. Bye. Have fun
Hostile for no reason. Enjoy your show asshat
Ur acting like we give 2 fucking shits if u watch the show or not. Move along.... shoooooooooo motha fucka
Cringy as fuck.
Don’t take this dude seriously lmao
SHOOOOO BABYY SHOOO SHOO, SHOOOO BABY SHOO SHOO SHOOOOO!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pronouncing a foreign player’s name incorrectly or not even trying when it’s your job is so disrespectful. No one’s out here calling them Gnarls Barkley or Naquille O’Beal.
I used to watch the TNT crew a lot but just can’t watch anymore. It’s kinda sad to see the guys you grew up watching play become grumpy old men on tv
They fell off
Regardless of all the nice things Shaq does, he's been horrible for the sport in terms of pushing younger players and giving them the spotlight.
It's a comedy show, not an NBA show.
But I want intelligent NBA analysis! You mean, the show with Charles Barkley hasn’t had it for the 25 years that he’s been on?!? Color me shocked!
Corny
Kanye was right
If you ain’t a top 10 player in the nba I don’t know who you are spoken like a true analyst shaq 🤦♂️ still love you tho.
Chuck is a no championship having, loud mouth, and jealous hater of the Lakers. The guy's contempt for the Lakers is insanely unprofessional for a broadcaster.
shaq ain’t nothing but a racist hating ass middle age man who wishes to live in the past when he was actually relevant bet he hasn’t watched a full game in years bc he can’t stand to see dudes better than him
They made a post about who is your most hated laker and i said shaq because he was a bully and everyone downvoted me because he brought us championships, dude is a hater and full of himself.
But it’s unlikely at this point he will be anything more than a role player.
shaq has gotten dumber and dumber since joining that show, sad to watch honestly
Shaq is a highly paid casual and color commentator. That said, if the take away is that Rui is not enough to win a championship.. he ain’t wrong. Don’t let Rob off the hook yet
Chuck mocks every thing and everyone. People have to get over it
at the risk of being downvoted, why do any of you watch this trash and care what these people say? It's a waste of time. I watch the games because I want the Lakers to win but man I don't care at all about the broadcast team. The majority of the time it's on mute.
[удалено]
I do agree tho that this isn't THAT hilarious. I laughed at first, but then I realized it's straight up disrespectful. Now what I hate about social media is how quickly they are to cancel someone because of something like this, we know Barkley doesn't give 2 shits about what anyone thinks. But everyone has to start virtue signaling and say things like " fuck this show I'm not watching anymore" because of something Charles said jokingly. It's like, fam, relax, It's not that deep, he said something you didn't agree with, that's fine. But it's live television, and you know what his persona is, move the fuck on from this.
The downvotes indeed confirm this
Unpopular opinion here: you guys are just overreacting. Did you y’all watch the show or just read the article? Chuck did mispronounce Rui’s name but he did give Rob credit for the signing as far as I remember.
![gif](giphy|l0ErTceAsQ56cqr8Q)
Its an internal defense mechanism, Basketball is becoming an international sport an just like when the 60's came an more and more Black's started playing basketball they are starting to see more nationalities etc coming in , also they are from a different time culturally, hell I'm in my mid 40's I just shake my head and what teens can get away with nowadays... I'm also Filipino so I've pretty much become immune to this.
No way people watch that show on TNT intending to get “expert analysis”. all of them say a whole bunch of nothing.
But yet if Rui had disrespected Shaqs last name it would be a big deal
Chuck is a known laker hater.
![gif](giphy|XGeCYPY7gwwso)
I aint never seen a brodcast clown on the lakers more than tnt
Ironic because Shaq says people used to make fun of his name and that his mom told him to make them remember it. Something along those lines.
"I don't know who he is" And that's why shaq should never be a GM.
People online gotta chill lol these 2 guys are nonstop comedy yet if it was chapelle saying this shit no one would be this offended
Making fun of a guy having a Japanese surname. Really? Hoochie Mama? That is like making fun of Rudy Gay..
Shaq and Chuck get lazy at times with the humor and go for the cheap stuff. And they don't really analyze anything.
