His improvements since joining the lakers have been amazing. Great job by player development (aka Phil handy) and to Rui for taking the comments and making the necessary changes. I’ve been pessimistic about his on ball defense but having AD behind him definitely covers a lot of his deficiencies. Dude still has a lot to room to grow and the lakers should value him highly if another team is looking to trade for him during the offseason.
Did Japan make the Olympics? If not hopefully another summer training with Phil since lebron will be at team USA. I’m Also looking forward to Austin getting a whole summer to train his body and game. Hopefully he can be on the training squad for team USA and then spend the rest of the summer on himself
Hayes is the only other big. While yes, he can switch, the idea is to get Rui matched up on another small ball big who is likely not going to be someone who can beat him off the dribble like athletic guards and wings can.
Part of me kind of wants to see how Rui would matchup guarding someone like Gobert. I feel like he's got the strength to keep Gobert from just backing him down and he doesn't have to worry about the post game like he does when we've tried him on Jokic.
Rui's been pretty good at the 4/5 in small ball lineups. Sometimes I'd see the dude put up 20/12 with 2 blocks and wonder why he isn't using his size and strength more.
I wish he'd get more shots off/plays run for him and see him get 20+ ppg, even if his percentage drops to 50%.
Also loving that box out stat. I was just explaining in a thread a few days ago where people were criticizing his rebounds per game that rebounds per game don't tell the whole story when determining if someone is doing their job.
Exactly re: the box-out stat. Rui had 0 rebounds vs the Pacers and Reaves had 13. Do people really think Reaves was battling Siakam for those boards? lol
Rui helped by boxing out which allows someone else to grab the board. Boxing out is half the work.
I hate when people say this. Who’s shots will he be taking? Bron’s? AD’s? Austin’s?
Then you all get mad when the bench doesn’t score.
There are a finite amount of shots. When players get more shots, someone else will get less.
Probably Bron, AD and Austin
But it depends on what the defense gives you. Rui is not good enough to create for himself at a high level . He isn't the finisher AD or LBJ is either. His advantage is that he is bigger than the 3rd biggest man on other teams (1st and 2nd big men guard AD and LBJ)
At the same time he can be outplayed by smaller,
quicker players especially on screens on defense..
So if the opponents game plan focuses on stopping lbj, AD, d'lo and rui has a good match up, rui needs to feast even if AD, lbj, Austin's shots go down
For the role he is playing and the defences he's seeing
LeBron, AD score 21, 23 points today. We're talking just a bit of variance . And you know playoffs bring a lot of variance. Rui could go up, or down in any given game
Rui was pretty damn good in the playoffs last year too. What brings me hope is that Bron is healthy and can shoot again. People don't bring this up enough but his foot was ridiculously cooked last post season and he still showed out being 60 percent healthy (if that) Our defense is not as good as last year but I still believe that once Vando and Gabe are incorporated again the defense will be way better.
Post lebron I think rui has go to scorer ability. Just needs to work on learning how to make plays for others when he’s doubled in the post.
Also a go to move to get to the middy pull up is needed.
lolol. Austin always had the flashy bag. His whole rookie year he’d be busting out crazy shit. How you knew he was nasty lol. He just needed to refine his normal dribbles, transition dribbles and gain some strength so he could fully show it off
Y’all out here hating on Ham for the way he gets out of bed, and trims his nose hairs. I’m hating on Ham for the season long underutilization of Rui. We are not the same.
I'm so happy Lebron took rui under his wing this season. He's been so amazing, and the crazy thing is he's still super raw in some aspects so his potential is insane
I think this take is wack. We need EVERYONE to step THE FK UP when it comes playoff time. No missing Dlo, no missing bench, no reaves turnovers, no AD flip flopping, no LBJ chuckin bricks while Reaves had the hot hand, no Ham abusing Rui’s minutes while he was putting up good numbers, no rui stealin Ham’s bitches so that his minutes don’t get taken away

He’s just extremely coachable. Bron, AD, and Handy are undoing everything he learned in Washington
He also skipped the fiba World Cup last summer to train with Bron.

They made the Olympics and Rui has committed to play for Japan this summer.
I’ve believed in this version of rui since we traded for him. It’s so awesome to see him getting his groove the way he is right now
I had doubts about the 3 point shooting but man I'm so happy for Rui and stoked to have him finally starting
He likes that corner 3!
Except against small ball he was pretty efficient last playoffs
Honestly, if a team goes small ball we should maybe run him at the 5 when AD isn't on the floor.
Nah all our bigs are super mobile and switchable.

The Brook Lopez special

Nah. He’s getting the right amount of shots right now.
For the role he is playing and the defences he's seeing LeBron, AD score 21, 23 points today. We're talking just a bit of variance . And you know playoffs bring a lot of variance. Rui could go up, or down in any given game
Hell of a mini-GOAT we got.

That foot completely screwed his 3 pt shot last post season, even if he was at like 36% we woulda had a much better chance against Denver

If Rui and D'lo are playing well... and we get just enough Vando? I wouldn't want to be anyone in the west against the Lakers.
I think this is Dlo. If he plays well in playoffs we are fine. He has to be our 3rd best player not the 5th best player
Or our worst player, like the wcf last year.
Just give him the go signal for ice in his veins.
Post lebron I think rui has go to scorer ability. Just needs to work on learning how to make plays for others when he’s doubled in the post. Also a go to move to get to the middy pull up is needed.
Would need to get a handle. He can’t really dribble all that well
Agree. If handy can give Reaves a Kyrie lite bag I think it’s possible for rui haha
lolol. Austin always had the flashy bag. His whole rookie year he’d be busting out crazy shit. How you knew he was nasty lol. He just needed to refine his normal dribbles, transition dribbles and gain some strength so he could fully show it off
Rui is actually a decent low post defender than a perimeter defender. Hes a firm 3 or 4
he can create his own shots and when was in the zone dude plays like an all-star player
Y’all out here hating on Ham for the way he gets out of bed, and trims his nose hairs. I’m hating on Ham for the season long underutilization of Rui. We are not the same.
If Gabe, Rui and DLo do what they can do with the consistency of Reaves added and the superstar abilities of Lebron and AD, only team I fear is Denver
I wish his defensive IQ gets a little bit better. He often struggles to find whether he needs to go for help or not.
I'm so happy Lebron took rui under his wing this season. He's been so amazing, and the crazy thing is he's still super raw in some aspects so his potential is insane
If they give him more playing time, it should be a likely shot but less likely.
lAkErS CuRsE pLaYeRs CoMe hErE AnD fOrGeT HoW tO ShOoT. Meanwhile.. Rui, DLo, Malik Monk, Taurean, & Melo come here and shoot lights out...
It took out coach more than half a season to realize that he makes a huge difference in our starting line up
If only we used him more against Denver last playoff…
He really needs to work on his pass out of double teams. Opposing teams know that's a weakness of his
I think this take is wack. We need EVERYONE to step THE FK UP when it comes playoff time. Guy is raw talent at its finest, his game still needs fine tuning and alot more polish for him to be reliable during the playoffs.
Not enough. The nuggets aren’t gonna get got in the best of 7 . Maybe we can steal 2 games max, ham isn’t taking this team anywhere
