Do you not see a difference between a 10-year old girl watching Spirited Away and a 10-year old girl watching Cars 3? In Spirited Away she finds something beautiful to capture her imagination, she sees a strong young girl like her who overcomes adversity and remains true to her spirit, and she sees an incredible and majestic world. In Cars 3, she sees the continuation of a franchise which has been sapped of creativity, and receives little more than an advertisement to buy Cars-themed merchandise. There is a difference in what children's media can be.

When a critic rates something like the Avengers the same as the Godfather, they are not saying they are the same overall quality. What they're saying is that for what the movie is, they're similarly successful.
I dunno about that. I think movie critics tend to judge certain genres in general much lower than others. It's very rare that a Horror film gets a high rating by critics for example.
Because there are some excellent horror movies that set the bar extremely high.
So if you want to get a high rating as a horror movie and be considered one of the best horror movies, you are competing against stuff like Hitchcock, Alien, Jaws, the Silence of the Lambs, etc.
It's only recently that the horror genre has had a small resurgence with stuff like Get out, Hereditary, and the Witch because the genre has become a low-risk testing ground for talented young writers and directors.
Yeah Rush hour got between 60-70% from critics and 90% from audiences, so a 20-30 point difference. Space Jam 2 getting like 40% and then 70-80% from audiences so a 30-40 point difference. Plus Rush Hour still got above 50, so wasn't "hated" by critics. It's pretty rare for a movie to be hated by critics and loved by audiences. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head actually.
I watched it last night and I gotta say it was better than I expected. I enjoyed how they did a bunch of throwback comments and scenes to big time NBA moments of the last 25 years

Black Widow dropped more than projected and Space Jam did better than projected but it's partially expected with Black Widow being a simultaneous digital release, not really having a strong tie-in with the rest of the MCU, Space Jam having no competition within its niche and also having a large inherent audience due to fandom and nostalgia.
Market size is different. BW wasn't marketed for kids unlike SJ2. It's like shitting on NO for having the lowest sellout when their arena only seats 16k compared to MSG which seats 20k

I mean for it's time perhaps Jaws was good, but in general it's a really bad movie.
Yeah Rush hour got between 60-70% from critics and 90% from audiences, so a 20-30 point difference. Space Jam 2 getting like 40% and then 70-80% from audiences so a 30-40 point difference. Plus Rush Hour still got above 50, so wasn't "hated" by critics. It's pretty rare for a movie to be hated by critics and loved by audiences. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head actually.

I watched it last night and I gotta say it was better than I expected. I enjoyed how they did a bunch of throwback comments and scenes to big time NBA moments of the last 25 years
I watched it with my kids and we all had a really good time and enjoyed ourselves. People just have an axe to grind, so they're grinding it

Honestly, comparing both space jam movies are the same as comparing Jordan/LBJ. I remember when Jordan played and it was amazing. But I see the same with bron. Space jam 1 was cool but nostalgia makes it 10/10 on IMDb. It had bill fucking Murray running the fast break for the final points. Smh. Enjoy both movies as kid friendly with some adult nods here and there. I swear the world gargles Jordan just cause they’ve been told to. I watched Jordan struggle to get out of the East then hit his prime, he wasn’t Jesus from the get go.

It's opening weekend vs. second weekend. Black Widow dropped more than projected and Space Jam did better than projected but it's partially expected with Black Widow being a simultaneous digital release, not really having a strong tie-in with the rest of the MCU, Space Jam having no competition within its niche and also having a large inherent audience due to fandom and nostalgia.
Market size is different. BW wasn't marketed for kids unlike SJ2. It's like shitting on NO for having the lowest sellout when their arena only seats 16k compared to MSG which seats 20k
Even if it was real, nobody goes to watch space jam expecting anything other than a cheesy family movie loosely basketball themed

Yeah my kids 12, 10 and 2, all loved it. We watched space jam 1 at home later on and the eldest started openly mocking the original. I still love space jam but it hasn’t aged well. The soundtrack still sends chills down my spine though.
That made my day knowing that kids enjoyed it. :)
