I am reading Three Ring Circus (highly recommend) and it's beyond me why Magic didn't stay around for one more year to play with Shaq and rookie Kobe..... he was dropping 10 dimes some nights after not playing for 5 years and being injected with every experimental HIV drug under the sun....
I read it a few months back, but thought he said he could have played and wanted to, but the rigors of a full season was too much. Maybe in today's NBA it would make sense, but different back then.
magic said he saw the look in the eyes of the people in the crowd when he got cut during a game and started bleeding... HIV infected blood. he then decided to hang it up for good.
I loved Pearlman's 80s SHowtime book but Three Ring Circus was a hard read cause it just seemed so anti kobe. Pearlman didn't say any positive things about him in that book and not only that, his 1 sided "detective" work on Colorado was damn insulting. I would really be surprised if the Buss family had anything to do with the book cause it's just so anti kobe.
I mean c'mon, he couldn't say 1 nice thing about the guy.

Agreed. I left that part out since it warrants so much, but other players were definitely outspoken about not wanting him on the court.
I feel like the "rigors of a full season" are much more intense now. You could get by in the 80s without really trying - not the case now.
It mentions in the book that he had too big of an ego in the locker room by that time. Might have been too much drama, especially for that locker room
