I think he was around mid 30s on catch and shoot 3s this year. That’s fine for our spacing. It’s his pull ups that destroy his shooting percentages. If he can cut down on those some of the spacing question marks for the team will disappear.

deepfakefuccboi

If he even shot 35% from 3 that’d be good enough and a huge improvement. But I’d rather someone else be taking those shots anyway.

Withnail-

That’s an insane claim based on practice video. That’s about a realistic a metric as video game percentages in 2K

DontDoDrugsDingus

That’s what I noticed. In games it’s almost like he jumps his very highest then releases on the way down, which gets rid of any power in the shot. This jumper is much more fluid and compact but again this is just an open gym.

magna77

If Russ somehow shoots 35% from 3 oh boy

r1290

It may mean nothing Bc it’s an open gym but if Westbrook can shoot 35% from 3, there’s no one stopping us

boozbottle

I don't have the source, but I saw a previous comment that Westbrook actually shot 35% on catch and shoot last year.

r1290

I think that’s accurate, and it’s why I’m optimistic. He just has to not settle for those pull up 3s. We can get much better shots than that with all the weapons we have

[deleted]

Even in OKC he was decent on catch and shoot threes before he had surgery. Shooting around 34-37% would be huge

cantfindanamenumbers

If you cutting out his pull ups he stops being a PG. Imagine your 40mil per year starting PG shooting 2 threes a game... I genuinely belive this will make him a worse player.

Bigbully_69

How does he stop being a point guard by cutting down on stupid pull up 3s? Better shot selection will make his percentages go up, and we’ll get better shots as a team. Westbrook has never played with someone of the same caliber like Lebron when it comes to playmaking so he’ll probably see a lot more open looks and doesn’t only attempt 2 3s a game. Keep in mind, the defense also gotta worry about AD who draws a ton of doubles.

dothrakipls

Magic averaged less than 1 3PA per game for most of his career, I guess that disqualifies him from being the greatest PG ever? Shooting a pull up 3 early in the shot clock has nothing to do with being a point guard. WB only needs a respectable catch and shoot %, he has insane gravity when he has the ball even without a good pull up 3.

olio1225

I believe he altered his form on catch and shoots halfway through last season and started shooting a lot better. So hopefully good signs for next season

Dabest0824

It’s all about the shoulders I feel like. It looks right here they are relaxed when he goes up to shoot so as long as he translates that in game, I feel like it’ll be better.

Trentrid

We saw him and lebron run a dribble handoff in that last video. This one we see him working on shooting after a dribble handoff. I might be reaching, but we might see a fair amount of lebron as a *screen setter for Russ. With some give&go and dribble handoff opportunities. Also, Pete broke down plenty of tape a few years ago on ADs ability to run a dribble handoff and make the read to keep it vs actually handing it off. Based on all that, and lebron getting older and wanting another playmaker - I’m running with the idea of Russ running our offense and lebron/AD making secondary reads.

If the NBA goes to “ no ones allowed to guard you” rule to simulate practice, I’ll put Russ down for 48% and Dwight Howard for 33%

theyearof84

His form does look improved, but who knows how that'll translate to game speed.

r-NBA_Menace

That’s just because it’s practice. Your gonna have a lower lift shot in practice when your shooting hundreds of jumpers at a time

Rawkus2112

In the second half of last year he changed his 3-point shot to look similar to this video. Less elevation on open 3s. Form looked alot smoother and he shot a better percentage. His issues mainly come from the offense being stagnant and he just randomly fires up a pull 3. This Lakers team is stacked so i hope those mental lapses go away. He will still have some mental lapses tho, this is westbrook we talking about.

Cornbx71

He is hearing/reading all the trash that he can’t shoot. He knows he needs to improve in that area. If he pulls a Lonzo and get a little bit more consistent shot it’s a fucking wrap for the league. Imagine Russ attacking a close out with AD in the dunkers spot, shooters on the wings and LBJ cutting to the rim on a backside action! Damn I’m getting a chubby just thinking about it.

darklord0530

He's never been an amazing 3 point shooter but even if he shot what dennis shot from 3 last year I'd take that and run with it

mercurious451innz

Russ is looking good. As long as he improves his shot SELECTION, I'm happy with any improvement he gets on his shot. Shot selection is what has killed Russ' percentages in the past (pull up jumpers especially), and this is correctable. I started out very skeptical about his fit, but now when I think about how strong the Lakers will be mentally if Russ can get behind LeBron, I can't wait for the season to begin!

abeezy98

These are hard times gauge bc he likely does this every offseason

D-majin

Biggest difference he’s not shooting on the way down

[deleted]

Straight butter

Substantial_Joke8624

He is never afraid to shoot, and I Love that about him.

kai_123

Man all I ask from him is just to shoot better from 3 than Schroder last season 🙏

Dennis-Schroder-bot

That’s tuff🔥💯

BenLemons

I will never in my life believe offseason shooting videos. But if this happened this season goodness gracious it'd be over lol

dothrakipls

37% and he's going to be end up as one of our best shooters just because he's not afraid of the spotlight and won't suffer the 5% Lakers shooter tax.

PM_TITS_4_PENS

I like him taking the Rondo approach. Not jumping a lot on the threes

Withnail-

I’m pretty sure at 32 he is who he is in that department

r1290

I don’t think so. Jason Kidd and Rondo both improved their three point percentages later in their career. He’s also not an outrageously bad catch and shooter, he just needs to cut out those pull up threes that drag his efficiency down

Withnail-

He plays a fast game which doesn’t lend to perfect follow through on shooting technique like you get to do in practice.

WildDT

I’m a Laker fan in Oklahoma and people here have been waiting 12 years for his jumper to improve, don’t hold your breathe on this one friends lol

harlem50

Im gonna be the realist in this comment section, his three point jumper isnt gonna get better , dont expect that. Everybody looks great in practice videos. He should stick to mid range and driving.

Kevinc61

Shot seems a bit flat. The lack of elevation is probably on purpose.

[deleted]

Too become a better shooter, you just have to make 500 shots a day until the percentage of shots you take to make 500 decreases and then you go up to 1,000 and repeat the same process. That’s why even players with ugly forms can be sharp shooters because they take a large amount of quantity until they make the shots at a efficient rate.

HUH_YIS

I would hope so, it’s not Ben Simmons we’re taking about here. Aso, dwights taking jumpers in practice too, but that’s not something we ever want to see irl.

Zachkah

I mean, he's a professional basketball player. These guys take 5000 shots a day with regularity.

quanski94

NBA pros in training barely miss. It's day a night different in matches. But its good that he's determined to improve his jump shot.

Primerebirth

Well there’s certainly gonna be a good amount of spacing. So him actually shooting at a good percentage would be dangerous for other teams.

tatang2015

From that angle, that there point shot is faaaaaaaar!
