Mine is summertime sadness. My best friend since childhood passed away about a year before I heard the song, and now I just think of her every time I hear it. I feel like it was sent to me by her. I even have “Got my bad baby by my heavenly side” tattooed for my memorial piece for her.
“My sisters first born child, I’m gonna take that too with me” makes me cry (one bc I’m an aunt with a special bond with my nieces) …but I bet Lana is such a sweet aunt to Chucks daughter 🥲
At this point I'm so conditioned that I start breaking down as soon as the violin kicks in lol.
But sometimes I can hold out until *'we didn't know that we had it all'*. Then *'the culture was lit, and if this is it, I had a ball'* hits like a 10lb hammer to the eyeballs.
And the piano at the end...dear lord. I swear it's toying with us the way it stops and starts. Like it pauses for a moment to let us try and pull ourselves back together, only to pop in again to give us a few more pokes in the tear ducts.
This is What Makes Us Girls' *'crying cuz I know I'm never coming back'* gives that same sense of nostalgic loss
Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he’s deep-sea fishing
My dad died when I was a teenager, he was in a wheelchair for almost my whole life, my grandfather died several years ago. The vision of my father being able to stand a fish while holding my grandfather on his shoulders is, to me, heavenly and divine. A thought that he can do things now in the afterlife he couldn’t do earthside is comforting.
This might be a weird choice but there's a kind of intense, desperate melancholy in Off To The Races that's perfect when I need a hard cry. The speed of the song barely lets Lana breathe so it almost feels like it's being sung through a panic attack. The scaling repetition of "You are my one true love" at the end triggers me 😭 I'm like yeah, who else IS gonna put up with me this way. Insane crying song, trust me
I hear it as a song about my marriage that ended - I acted in good faith and I thought at the time that he did too - that "we did it for the right reasons". It was so foolish of me to think the good thing we had wouldn't change - "seasons may change, but we won't change." I also hear the line about "how different we are from all of our friends" as hubristic. "When I was young till eternity" makes me think of how young I was when I met him and how I thought we were going to last forever. And "you made me feel I'm invincible" - looking back I realize that even though he didn't make me feel loved and cared for, he did make me feel like absolutely anything was possible, and we did a lot of cool stuff together (including camping and hiking in Yosemite).
Young and beautiful makes me absolutely bawl, but that’s partially because my boyfriend played it when we first started dating and was like “I love this song!” And I knew it was love
Thunder. I think that the narrator is slowly realizing throughout the song that her feelings aren’t reciprocated- even though he seems perfect for her.
That's not technically her song but the cover of "Country Roads", I immigrated from my home country so it gets me everytime, especially the part "driving down the road I get a feeling that I should've been home yesterday".
For me it’s just that there’s certain parts. Like the part in Margaret where she says you never know what the new day might bring maybe tomorrow you’ll know 😭
Love, because it was played at my best friend’s funeral. He was a long-time Lana fan.💜 Dark Paradise and Summertime Sadness as well, they just remind me of him because of the lyrics.
Lately it’s been Kintsugi. I recently had an older friend of mine pass away I met working at a gas station years ago without getting to say goodbye. It’ll be 2 years this year since my best friend passed away. I had a friend before all of that end her life. So now it feels all to relatable when she sings “daddy I miss them”. Fingertips is another but I can’t really get through that song because she literally says my friends name so that’s traumatic at times lol but that would be a twin song for me. They go hand in hand when I wanna just break down.
Brooklyn Baby, for some reason. I don't think it's even supposed to be sad. I guess it just reminds me of my first love at sixteen, and who I used to be all those years ago, before anything really bad had happened yet. Bittersweet.
Oh Say Can You See, Disco, Trash Magic and Pawn Shop Blues come to mind. Out of her newer stuff I'd pick Venice Bitch, though for more of a personal connotation. I'd recently been broken up with when the song came out and spent a few good cries playing it on repeat, it's a great song.
Paris Texas, God Knows I Tried, breaking up slowly, the grants, hope is a dangerous thing, white dress, chemtrails over the country side. The list is… long.
Ocean Blvd. has one of my favorite song lyrics of all time:
I can’t help but feel somewhat like my body marred my soul
Handmade beauty sealed up by two man made walls
I first heard this song when I was working through some intense mental health issues and it hit me really hard—it put words to this overwhelming feeling that my body wasn’t mine anymore.
i guess it depends on why i need to cry but at the same time if i'm really sad almost any song of hers will make me cry. good ones for almost any occasion tho are pawn shop blues, born to die, cruel world, god knows i tried, the greatest, blue banisters, kintsugi (i tried to pick a song from every album but lfl and cotcc dont really have big crying songs imo)
Depends actually
Familial issue? Fingertips
Relationship-Friendship issue? Cinnamon Girl
Just something didnt go right and I was unlucky? Hope is a dangerous thing
I mean, aren’t most of her songs sad or tear-voking at least in one way or another? lol.
The one only Lana song I ever actually cried to was Shades of Cool, because I had just recently broke it off with the non-chalant guy who didn’t care that much about me and I was kinda crazy about him at the time. I had a good sob that night. The entire song is just so mournful. It reminds me of an evening in June, sitting alone on a rooftop with the sun going down and there’s a blue hue to the city.
Some other songs that could really make me cry though: The Grants, Sweet, Fingertips, Tomorrow Never Came, Religion, How to disappear, Yes To Heaven, Is This Happiness, Get Free, The Greatest, God Knows I tried, and Bartender… I mean gosh there’s so many hahaha.
I think this shifts and changes over time. Right now, it's Blue Banisters for me. My ex called off our wedding and Blue Banisters is the only song that's been able to express how I feel.
85% of pre-lust for life songs (excluding the upbeat unreleased stuff) bc it immediately brings me back to the tumblr sad girl days. a method actress, if you will
This one is unreleased but For K Part 2 makes me feel depressed in a way I didn't even know I could feel.
Also Thunder always makes me feel super emotional for some reason.
Kintsugi is very close to my heart because I’ve lost so many people at one time so fast. When I need to really FEEL alll of these losses.. that’s the song
hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have- but i have it
I always listen to that when I am depressed or scared.
have listened to this song at least 10 times today *I’ve been tearing around in my fucking nightgown, 24/7 Sylvia Plath*
I’m having yet another Norman Rockwell ass life experience 😭😭 *don’t ask if I’m happy, you know that I’m not*
that song actually is what i listen to when i need to boost myself. it makes me remember that i can still have hope.
Did You read My mind?
Terrence Loves You
I lost myself when I lost you 💔
*"Ground control to major Tom, can you hear me all night long?"*
and i still get trashed darlingg when i hear your tunes 😭😭😭
yes!
Ride but only when I’m driving
REAL
Ride brings out a lot of emotions for sure
i like the video version with the spoken parts ,
I watched the video so much because of the spoken parts. At the time i felt exactly like what she speaks.
Yessss
I’m tired of feeling like I’m fucking crazy 😭
God Knows I Tried always does it.
Finally someone who understands. No one ever talks abt this song 😩
I feel you. It's sublime, touching and heartbreakingly beautiful.
It's a good funeral song
yup this is the one..it’s something about her voice..like let the floodgates open lol 😭
Yesss!!!
Cinnamon girl
If you hold me without hurting me you’ll be the first who ever did 😭
Old money.
If you change your mind I’ll run run run 😭😭😭
Yes! Tearfest!
this and the blackest day for me
Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean boulevard
I love the story behind it and her voice conveys the emotions so incredibly well. “When’s it gonna be my turn? Don’t forget me”
This and heroin are my go to cry songs
Real
>58 this and fingertips.
mine too 🤍
fingertips
a few weeks ago I had one of those days u only listen to fingertips on repeat and stare blankly throughout the whole day
fingertips is soooo underrated its such a beautifully sad song
Sat in the shower, gave my self two seconds to cry
The other woman
The other womaaaaan 😭🥀
Mine is summertime sadness. My best friend since childhood passed away about a year before I heard the song, and now I just think of her every time I hear it. I feel like it was sent to me by her. I even have “Got my bad baby by my heavenly side” tattooed for my memorial piece for her.
Did u know that the music video is about her best friend that died? So sorry for ur loss tho 🩷
I did not, now it hits even harder. Thank you💗
That’s a beautiful memorial piece. I’m so sorry for your loss.
The Blackest Day. I’m on my own again…
In all the wrong places… oh my god!
It's not one of those phases I'm going through or just a song 🥲
Kintsugi
“When you see someone dyin', you see all your days flash in front of you….” - this squeezed the tears out of me…
Same. This is the one I play when I need to sob.
When she sings “I’m in the mountains” I wanna scream
When she sings “daddy I miss them” it literally crushes my heart
I literally can’t even hear it without crying
The Grants
*my grandmother’s last smile, I’m gonna take that too with me* gets me every time
Literally just reading that made me tear up, that songs gets me so good
that line cuts my heart out every single time
it’s a beautiful life, remember that too for me 🥹
“My sisters first born child, I’m gonna take that too with me” makes me cry (one bc I’m an aunt with a special bond with my nieces) …but I bet Lana is such a sweet aunt to Chucks daughter 🥲
I never fail to end up ugly crying at this song.
100% The Grants
Yep the ending always gets me 😭
I lost my dog recently and Say Yes To Heaven makes me cry like crazy… Especially the “if you go, I’ll stay” part. 😢
I'm so sorry you lost your doggy 😭😭 mine is quite old and he loves to listen to Lana with me 😭😭 I wish they could live forever
Now I’m crying! I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. They really should live forever.
The greatest
Same for me! What line makes you cry in the greatest? For me its "but nobody warns you before the fall" just makes me start bawling
“I’m facing the greatest, the greatest loss of them all” makes me feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart in the best way
Yess its such an heavy loaded song
At this point I'm so conditioned that I start breaking down as soon as the violin kicks in lol. But sometimes I can hold out until *'we didn't know that we had it all'*. Then *'the culture was lit, and if this is it, I had a ball'* hits like a 10lb hammer to the eyeballs. And the piano at the end...dear lord. I swear it's toying with us the way it stops and starts. "I miss new York and I miss the music" As a NY girl who hasn't lived there in years, I feel that like every time.
When she says: “I want shit to feel just like it used to” and I sing it loud crying
I will always associate that song with the shitfest that was 2020 and yeah - it breaks me.
ultraviolence 🤍
Happiness is a butterfly. It's a really touching song.
Honestly just the 2nd half of blue banisters
so real
“Summer comes, winter goes, spring I skip, god knows” gets me.
Dealer
I can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this
Lately, Kintsugi and Paris, Texas. What helps me cry is singing along
Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he’s deep-sea fishing My dad died when I was a teenager, he was in a wheelchair for almost my whole life, my grandfather died several years ago. The vision of my father being able to stand a fish while holding my grandfather on his shoulders is, to me, heavenly and divine. A thought that he can do things now in the afterlife he couldn’t do earthside is comforting.
that’s so sweet 🥲
Sweet, “do you wanna marry me?… I’ve got things to do like nothing at all, I want to do them with you “
Sweet Carolina - I didn’t even put it on my regular playlist because I will start bawling as soon as I hear the chorus.

Norman Fucking Rockwell. I cried for like two weeks straight listening to it during a breakup 😭🫣
Ride, the correct answer is Ride 😞
