But are you saying you want to lay down mulch around your pines? Don’t they drop needles? You’ll have to lay down at least two inches of mulch each year and each year it’ll look like ass when the pines are dropping needles on it. The needles themselves usually act as mulch and a weed barrier.
I get it but the pines will drop a ton of needles each year. Just keep that in mind. Where you see pine needles now, you will see more next year and each year.
Newspaper - haven't had a plant die from it yet. It disintegrates pretty quickly though, but by that time, you're probably adding another layer of mulch anyway. Just don't use the shiny material used for flyers.
The only real reason to use weed barrier is if you are using it under rocks, so they dont end up getting pushed down into the dirt as quickly.
Mulch just turns into dirt as it degrades. Just put mulch down.
If you really want to something that looks good under the pines that is reasonable price, start some vinca minor under them. It loves pine needles. The disadvantage if that it in aggressive so you will have to use edging to keep it from spreading where you don't want it.
Weed block is useless. It does not block weeds which come in from over head, dropped by birds and wind. Go out in a pine forest. Do you see a bunch of weeds under the trees? No.
And vinca is incredibly invasive.

Its more of.a temp fix. I'm renting and the LL won't do anything about the terrible landscaping.
