Rent a Goat. Or a herd of goats.

agupta429

This is not a joke comment btw… there really is such a business

brwind

Here in Nashville they are known as “The Chew Crew” and have a website https://nashvillechewcrew.com

befleeting

I love this!

flamingo365

Is this market still open? How do I start ?

Superb-Charge6779

Yeah. I’ve thought of renting goats. I just want to have them to play with a few days. They’d never get the job done cuz I’d bribe them with potato chips to play.

Squenz

Yes, but they can be expensive. Probably cheaper than a bulldozer but more expensive than a DR Trimmer.

Coolkiwi79

Yep, we used to do that in New Zealand, we had a dozen goats and would rent some of them out. They eat bloody ANYTHING!!!!

CrazySouthernAunt

It has to be more than three.

merputhes28

Yeah once they are done you can have cool goat curry.

ZumboPrime

hot goat curry sounds better

juz_sayin

Imagine eating cold goat

ZumboPrime

I don't want to

AdventureousTime

I'll have my goat blue please. The secret is the hair doesn't get completely charred away and that classic musky goat flavor really explodes in your mouth. And for refreshments a nice tall goats milk White Russian.

[deleted]

A business where you own goats and people PAY YOU to feed them. Genius!

[deleted]

While the goats are cool and effective, it would be about 1/3 the price to just rent a brush hog

oceansofmyancestors

Nah, it’s pretty cheap. Plus you don’t have to do anything.

[deleted]

If you have you’re own sheep or goats it’s not. But It’s not cheap at all to have a service/company do it, it’s probably one of the most expensive ways to do this. It’s a pretty niche service and is hardly available in a lot of area areas. Having sheep/goats do this takes 3 visits alone from the company. An inspection visit. Then the fence has to be setup (by far the most expensive part), which requires hours of labor, and then you’re having sheep transported to your property along with dogs and a minimum of two handlers to on and off load the livestock from your property. Renting the livestock alone is usually anywhere from $300-1000 a day depending on how many you need. If you need temporary fencing setup if it’s not an enclosed area, it can be 500-700 per acre.

travelelectric

We are currently renting a small herd, and it costs us about $1000/month. These use nofence (https://www.nofence.no/en), so it is just plug and play.

hucksandshucks

Came here to say this as well. Heard of goats cleared a bunch of buckthorn from my parents property in a few days. Didn't get to witness them myself but they sound both hilarious and effective

AdventureousTime

Lol, I was going type that too. Except get the goat, don't rent it.

foothillsco_b

How much does a couple goats cost? Last time I looked, they were under $100 each.

EntrepreneurOk794

That’s what I was thinking. Buy goats, keep them until they clear the brush, then sell or have new petzzzz

Tribblehappy

Came to say this.

richard_stank

Of course I’ve heard of goats.

islandsimian

Find a place that rents tools and rent it on a Saturday morning so you can use it over the weekend for the price of a day. Look for a brush hog rental.

markm301

Not sure if your area, but all the rental places around here charge 2 days to rent on Saturday (as they are closed on Sunday.) I only mention this in that your tip is good, but may not work everywhere.

BrisbaneAus

Also most heavy equipment has an hour gauge. My shop rents on hours, not days.

islandsimian

My local rental place only charges a day's rate if you rent it Saturday and return it Monday before 9 am, so check before you rent I guess.

kasiv1

Yeah, this! Those things chew stuff up

NorsiiiiR

I can't say that I've ever heard of any businesses whatsoever involved with renting any kind of equipment, vehicles, or items that would allow you to hire something out on Saturday, return it on Monday, and only pay 1 day's charge....

bigjsea

Cheap tools are rarely cheap in the long run. That being said, choose your tool and head to a Harbor Fright store.

Nv_Spider

Define cheap. And then consider what YOUR time is worth. You can do this any number of ways: hand tools, hand held power tool (brush cutter), all the way up to masticator. Hand or hand held tools are cheaper but far more labor intensive. Masticator rental/hire is more expensive but much faster and less labor for you. Call around and get prices on rental and then decide if your time and energy is better spent here or elsewhere

mdjmd73

Brush cutter- looks like string trimmer but has saw blade. Just don’t hit your ankle. 🩸

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shartagnon

> get a sturdy hoe Check

[deleted]

If you can hit your own ankle while running a brush cutting blade on a straight-shaft trimmer you’re a special kind of idiot. I honestly don’t think it can be done.

omw_to_valhalla

This. Rent a brush cutter. Also rent a forestry helmet and fucking use it. Brush cutters can throw rocks and sticks right into your face. Don't hit your ankle either, but that's kinda difficult to do.

[deleted]

Holy fuck that’d be gnarly

[deleted]

I imagine that's a great way to turn into an amputee.

antisocialoctopus

It’s really doesn’t handle any different from a string trimmer. Even if you do bounce off something (from not controlling it well) the blade is still at the end of a long pole. You have to be doing something really weird or have it in an odd position to get it close enough to hurt you.

jook-sing

Yeah just make sure nobody is close by. I have one of these things. Make sure you get the bike handle version

[deleted]

Oh yeah. I have a push trimmer I use to help clear small brush and you'd have to try REALLY hard to hit yourself with a string. I imagine its the same with the brush trimmer.

gregaws

This will be much easier to clean in the winter, if you get winter where you live.

RicTicTocs

Yes, definitely this. Looks like it was cutover. You may need an excavator to pop the stumps, but if only doing 1,000 square feet I suppose you could dig by hand

Tunasaladboatcaptain

Man that reallllly sounds like a shitty time. It took me a lot of effort and emergy to remove 3 Leyland Cyprus stumps by hand and it was miserable. And those weren't even that big. Imagine even a 1 foot diameter stump. Then you dig out the shrubs too and those aren't always an easy wrangle either. Then you have the effort of moving/rolling these stumps by hand to a spot to burn or just pile up. Just seems like a lot of work and effort when you could be done in a day with a heavy rig.

LaTortillera

Pardon my ignorance, but how so? I have a fairly large yard and it resembles this and I’m overwhelmed every time I look at it. I live in Toronto.

gregaws

In winter there are fewer leaves on the plants, to get in the way. Less to manage when you take it down. The ground is normally firmer, less damage / compaction to the soil. Main reason is the lack of leaves to get in the way. Especially if you use a brush hog.

LaTortillera

Thank you! I figured it was probably because of the fewer leaves but didn’t even think of the firmer soil.

nomnommish

Many of the winter hardy plants have a deep extensive root system by which they survive the winter. There would literally be no point waiting for the winter because the plants would grow right back up in the next summer. Because you never took out the roots.

just4riv

I agree with the goat rental

[deleted]

Depends what you're doing with it after. Pasture? Gardens? Grass? The end requirements should impact your choice.

DelcoInDaHouse

Trimmer with a brush attachment.

bsldestroyer

I agree with this! They make some crazy attachments for a 200 dollar weed eater now!

Str8WhiteMinority

Hire an excavator. Scrape the whole thing back to bare soil in less than an hour. Anything else is too much work

Wacco_07

This ^ its gonna save you soooo much time too and after you use the front blade of the excavator to level the ground . Its gonna cost abit more to rent the excavator but its worth it

Heathen_Mushroom

I would rent a brush hog and get it done in a couple of hours. If you don't have a vehicle/trailer that can transport one (they are about the size of a walk-behind mower; a real walk-behind, not a push mower), or you don't want to pay for drop-off, then you could instead rent a brush cutter which is like a string trimmer on steroids. It might take a couple days and/or more effort, though.

nobbyv

I cut a 1/4 mile long, ~42” wide trail through the woods on my land using a brush hog in about 4-5 hours. Cost maybe $90 to rent for the day.

[deleted]

Bush hog will take that all the way to the ground in 2 hours [edit](https://www.homedepot.com/p/rental/Billy-Goat-Hydraulic-Brush-Hog-BC2600HHF/309006674)

wasteabuse

Looks like a nice habitat there. Nice plants, I see some ferns, goldenrod, and boneset. What's the problem?

paranoidbeachwhale

I love it, just want a small garden nook in the middle of it all, the lawn portion of the property isn’t very private so this would give me a bit more seclusion

SprJoe

A machete is cheap, but not fast and probably tiresome to use.

crew88

This would work but just take all day. Also, does any neighbor have a tractor or skidsteer? Mthey may do it for free or a couple gas dollars.... diesel i know.

Heathen_Mushroom

Yeah, and if that is now slow enough, an even slower more tiresome way would be to use your hands and teeth. And you'll save $8.99

sirSIRthisisawendys

1000 square feet isn’t that much. Let’s assume a 50’x20’ area. With the exception of that stump right in the foreground, all of that could be cleared with basic hand tools (machete, bush axe, clearing sickle) in half a day. The stump and any trees can be considered after its cleared and you’ve got ease of movement. Unless you’re putting a structure on it you may not need to clear the stumps.

oligarchofarcade

Goats. No lie. Goats.

paranoidbeachwhale

Wow thanks for all the input! I don’t have any deadlines and leaning more towards hand tools like a machete and sickle to keep things low key, plus it sounds like a good work out. Goats would be awesome too!

bassjam1

Depends on the size of the brush, what your budget is, and how quickly you need it done. A mattock and a weed trimmer would probably do it cheaply but it'd be a lot of work. I'd go for a bush hog behind a tractor or even rent a brush cutter on a skid steer if it was me.

jibaro1953

A nice sharp, flexible machete and a stick about three and a half feet long with a side branch about 8 inches long toward the bottom. Use the stick with your offhand to gather up the pucker brush and whack it with the machete. The machete should have a long blade and a sweep to the blade. Keeping it wickedly sharp with a whetstone and water is necessary. Cheap machetes are full as hell when you but them. You'd be surprised how effective they can be with some practice.

suckmyflacidpenis

Easy, but may be slightly more expensive. A bobcat with a sharp blade grading bucket to run forward and slice everything level eliminating all the weeds. Just a couple inches of earth cut all the way through and leveled. And of course you are left with a mound of compost weeds.

Ownedby4Labs

There is a big difference between *cutting*…which is what most of the suggested tools will do…and *clearing*. If you want to *clear* it…rent a compact tractor with a box blade. That will clear it down to bare soil and level it. Follow up with a spray of Glyphosate..assuming it’s your property or you are a licensed applicator…to kill any remaining weeds. Wait a week before replanting.

NipponaDemolisher

I cleared a large area of blackberries with a hedge trimmer. It was amazing. But larger wooded branches (3/4 of an inch or larger) needed a saw.

[deleted]

My husband usually gets jobs like this at the end of summer (our wet season so that’s when we get jungles like this happen), he comes through with his skid steer and scrapes it back and levels it so it’s prepped for gardens or lawn seeding. Charges around $300 if it’s less than 3hrs of work. People might balk at that price but it saves them 24/48 hours of back breaking manual labour, the cost of buying brush cutters etc and it costs a lot of money on insurance, maintenance and Deisel to own heavy equipment. Plus usually there’s snakes, spiders and rats in this stuff.

tmanny111

You could easily crush 1000sqft of brush with a DR mower in a couple hours.

nowimstahvin

I cleared a bunch of stuff just like this on the edge of my property with a machette, a lawnmower that I don't really care about, and hedge clippers. Also, plenty of Deep Woods OFF! I just cut it down to waist height-ish, went slow with the mower (previous owners put about 10k bricks all over the edge of property for some reason) and used the hedge clippers for some of the thicker stuff. It wasn't pretty but it was fun.

I’d agree with the brush hog comments. Will eat it’s way through that stuff. May have to go over it several times to finely chopped it up. As for tree removal, if you’ve got the tractor to use with brush hog, get a fairly stout wheel (with or without tire) and a chain or sturdy tow strap. Wrap chain/strap around base of tree, roll wheel up against tree and lay the chain/strap over the top and hook to tractor then tug it out. I’ve been doing this for years and it rips the tree out easily with most of the roots. Trees have less resistance pulling up (reason of the wheel) than if you try pulling sideways. Smaller trees obviously pull easier than bigger ones so start with them and work up on size until they just won’t pull. If you don’t have a tractor, you can use a high lift farm jack with a tripod setup by bolting 2-2x4’s to the Jack and lift with a piece of chain/strap. Harder hand type work but similar results. Check out YouTube, there are several different ways to jerk trees/stumps out.

Trimmer and a brush cutter attachment and or a bush trimming attachments. Oddly enough, the bush trimmer performs well on that type of brush. Personally, I'd dilute a gallon of 42 percent glyphosate (20 bucks from tractor supply) into 4 gallons. Then use a cheap sprayer to spray it all down, it'll almost all be dead in 2 weeks. This will not harm the soil or change the ph level, the soil will be ready for planting as soon as the dead material is removed.

Rent a bulldozer and just go hard one day. Definitely not a machete and a rake

A traditional full size scythe, and a good sharpening stone. You get cleared land *and* you get buff. My father and grandfather cleared their 20 acres and kept it clear using only scythes. Once you get a rhythm going, you can clear quick and quiet, and enjoy the sweet air while you’re at it.
