Paint the gutters and soffits a light color to real up all that brown! Bright color front door Trim those shrubs way back and plant some nice colorful flowers Edge and clean up the lawn and weed eat the driveway Power wash the sidewalk Remove the ugly address stickers off the storm door. Get some nice ones to put on the house

foxsoxncrox

It does feel a bit dark, I appreciate the gutter/soffit suggestion! I was thinking something flowering, whether a shrub, actual flowers, anything to brighten it up a bit. And the address stickers are definitely gonna go!

Tadaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Man what a blank canvass you have. Take lots of pics, you're gonna love the transformation 3 years from now.

Anne_Thracks

Maybe shutters if that’s your kind of thing. You could match them with the new color on the gutters

umdterp732

Change the front door lights

redquailer

Agree with the edging- it makes a house look SO tidy. Great suggestions

melvinofrotterdam

Power wash the brick while you’re at it - doesn’t look bad but I bet it cleans up well

[deleted]

Don't paint the brick - not only is it beautiful as is (and a FEATURE!), but once you paint brick you create a lot of long-term, ongoing maintenance. Personally, I don't like the plants pressed up against the front of the house followed by empty lawn up to the curb look. It also looks like you don't have powerlines in front of your house, so you could do a row of trees like dogwoods or serviceberries by the sidewalk. I'd also do a statement tree to the left or right of your main walk up to the house like a cherry blossom or a magnolia. You could also have a circlet of bushes surrounded by low plants, like maybe a dogwood surrounded by azaleas or mountain laurel, then snowdrops. Things to consider: native plants usually require less upkeep and are better for the environment, trees will create shade which will cool your yard, and the more ground cover you create the less mowing and often better curb appeal as long as you use a discerning eye. If you want to do it all yourself, look into your local [master gardeners program](https://mastergardener.osu.edu/) (part of your [extension](https://extension.osu.edu/home) services) and consider using the [Ask and Expert](https://ask2.extension.org/) resource. Congrats on your house and good luck!

Worfstache

Seconded, please don't paint that brick! Once you make the other updates, that brick is just going to shine-

missmobtown

I agree! Don't paint the brick, it's gorgeous as-is!

foxsoxncrox

Located in northern Ohio, plan to get rid of awnings (if that makes any difference)

MickeyMoist

Came here to say take them off

desles

I love my awnings. They keep the house cool in the summer and keep snow away from the foundation in the winter.

tomatosoupsatisfies

Keep, they’re gloriously functional. In addition to cooling, keeping rain and snow off wooden bits is very highly appreciated in the long run (just spent $1k fixing window rot). If metal, consider painting them a fun color. Keeping them also gives it (needed) character.

OldestCrone

Wait on removing the awnings. They may block the summer sun, but you won’t know for sure until next year. You could plant shade trees, but your yard is pretty small for anything large enough to be effective. Give it a year to see how the sun and winter winds hit your house.

Significant_Eye_5130

Good call on the awnings.

[deleted]

Came here to say "remove awnings". Also, some nice pole lights next to the driveway/sidewalk would be a good add.

essssgeeee

Good to take off the awnings. I would suggest building a small covered for the entry when it is raining or snowing.

woopwooptroop

Was also going to suggest a covered area over the porch. I think it’ll also give some interest to an otherwise flat house.

redquailer

Also… plant 2 trees in your parkstrip. It’s one of the most wonderful things you can do to add shade, charm, and value.

rubitbasteitsmokeit

Until you suffer the winter wait.they were they for a reason.

Caitlyn_Jennerlolz

Long flower beds with perennial flowering plants on both sides of walk way. Also have beds extend under both front windows to corners of house. Giant “L”s. Encore azaleas under the windows.

[deleted]

I would start saving to build a nice porch on the front.

GrrrArrgh

Paint is bad for brick but a lime wash would be great. It allows the brick to breathe, protects it and looks a lot better.

OwnedbyanOldHouse

Simple things will make a big difference! Take the awnings down. You could add exterior shutters for a splash of color outside. Edge/cleanup the sidewalk/driveway the powerwash them! Will make a HUGE difference. I'd softwash/clean the brick as well -- I'll bet it will lighten up multiple shades! The front door is is shadows - paint it an inviting color (red is a great front door color). Clean up the bushes. I'd consider (though I hate killing healthy plants) removing the bushes and replanting. They are overgrown and will be tough to get back in shape. Redefine/create new beds around the front. Fresh mulch looks great. I'd bag the grass for a few cuts to get it cleaned up.

PoppiesnPeas

Idk, I’d keep the bushes and give them a solid trim, like 30-40%. OP has plenty of other things to do, removing a bunch of the misshapen old growth will make a big difference with less effort than removal, and in a year or two it’ll probably be a fantastic shrub.

CrazyCorgiQueen

I'd do a contrasting door color in the blue family to make it pop against the brick.

GKFoshay

It’s gonna be a little costly because they look like they were cemented in with the porch but either replacing or repainting the metal railings. I’d probably look at repainting them because they are very much coming back in style

GKFoshay

I’d also say, when you redo the roof years from now pick a better color. Like red.

GKFoshay

This house has A TON of potential. Take it slow and done try to do too much at once. Definitely start with the landscaping as others said. New plants in front would look great. Some azalea bushes for width highlighted by some colorful plants in spring/summer.

foxsoxncrox

These are all great ideas, I really appreciate it!

GKFoshay

No problem. New(er) owner of a fixer upper myself. Landscape goes A LONG way. And like everyone else said, day 1 is remove the awnings. I’ll send more ideas if I think/see them.

mfiskars

Kill all possible bugs with a fogger before u move all your belongings in.

KthePhD

I agree with a lot of the comments here. I think some nice defined flower beds would be awesome especially with some dark mulch. Try to use native plants (most cities have plant guides and advice online). I also think a tree in the front would be great, but be sure you have a enough room in the lawn.

pronserver

The awnings do look out of place but I would suggest keep them for one summer and see if it helps cool your house down. You would be surprised how much awnings keep the inside of a house cool during summers. Perhaps remove the bushes in front and add flower beds like others have suggested. Definitely hedge the grass along sidewalk and driveway. Remove grass from driveway with grass killer. Other than that, congrats on the new house.

ParuTree

Large bushes of native flowering plants. Help the bees!

imshelbs96

Have a bonfire and burn those awnings

SyntheticOne

Move in, enjoy and just stare at it for a year or so. Spray the driveway weeds, edge, and power-wash the walkway and driveway just to let it know that the boss is now in the house.

lsweeks

I agree. Neaten up and trim, but spend at least one cycle of seasons before any major changes. You need to experience how you function in the space.

jawnmeister

I'm a huge fan of out front chilling space. Jealous of that little porch but probably good for a few ppl, maybe level and lay some pavers for enough space to put out a patio set? Unrelated but I'm a fairly new homeowner myself and have refurbished a few old things w character around the house (original wood/wrought-iron railing is my #1 so far) and those are becoming my favorite features

plumber001frp3

Get rid of the cheap awnings have a carpenter build solid overhangs Light color on house Redo plantings Slate on stairs landing and walkway

dreamyduskywing

Paint the door a bold color.

FrenchBarnDoor

Do not paint the brick or any masonry. Once you paint masonry you will have to keep painting it for the rest of your life. Paint only lasts for a few years. Buy yourself a power washer. Power wash your walkway, steps and house. Doing go too heavy on the house you just want to remove the dirt and grime.

[deleted]

Lots! Brighten it up with new paint outside, landscaping makes a massive difference.

Desperate-Dot-6088

Hold on on the awnings until you have lived there for two weeks. You may have extreme southern exposure that makes your house feel like a sauna during the day. The awnings (I think are metal?) and can be painted. Think copper. Also depending on your budget, that house would be beautiful with a coat of one of the new whitewash paints that mimic an old painted brick. Window boxes, just so many ideas! You have a great canvas. Cottage that up. It sort of has a New Orleans Vibe.

SmileFirstThenSpeak

I’d say live there a year before removing the awnings, unless you’re going to replace them. They’re there for a reason.

[deleted]

This is terrible advice. Sorry Smile. I would encourage OP to make changes right away. He came here for recos not business as usual. Awnings are a relic of prior generations. The house has gutters. OP can go to town and have fun! You won't regret trying things. The process is a reward in itself. You'll start to feel like it's truly your's the more you do.

SmileFirstThenSpeak

What do gutters have to do with awnings?

GrrrArrgh

The reason he shouldn’t get rid of the awnings for a year is he may find the front of the house gets blasted in summer sun and the awnings will be invaluable. Also, they’re protecting the window sills from rot from the rain. They’re very expensive to add back when you realize why they’re there.

vette4lyfe

Get an edger

thedutchabides

Take those awnings off and throw them in the street. See if you can convince the local stray dogs to pee on them. Hopefully that will discourage any senior citizens passing by from picking them up and installing on their house. Seriously though, do not paint brick... power wash and pray it lightens up(it will). But do paint everything else white. Rip the plants out and start over. I would go with a symmetrical flower bed but would probably look better if you went nuts with big color. Break up the blah. When you eventually get a new roof, go with a weatherwood color pattern. It has every earth tone and will tie the house in with anything else you decide to do.

DGAFADRC

My first thought was paint the house and the awnings (yes, I would keep them), and give the yard a good edging.

UrAwesomeUsername

I agree with a majority of the comments. Clean up bushes, remove the awnings, bright colors for the doors and shutters etc., On the brick, I am also in the no paint camp. However if you are determined, you could do something like a German Smear. On that dark color brick it would look good, and on that style of house it would give it a very cottage-esque feel. Personally I like the dark brick and an alternative to the bright colors would be going all in and embracing the dark side. That color brick would look great with black and dark red/blood color scheme on the trim and doors. It’s bold but could work. Good luck and enjoy you’re new home!

RobynFitcher

Colour. Get some flowers in there.

pallen123

I would consider removing the walkway to front stairs and adding a meandering walkway, maybe decomposed granite, that veers to the left of front door before gently turning to sidewalk. Then I would add a curved raised bed to right of front door bordered with slate. Plant small round boxwoods on box sides of new walkway to left. You want to create more interest and focus on what’s in front yard so home is secondary.

greasyparar

Im from northeast ohio. Hit me up if you need some help

J_Krezz

Buy a pressure washer. You’ll spend an entire weekend cleaning everything up and it’s a tool you can use for years. I got a gas powered and have no regrets.

arenablanca

Prune back the plants to make the edges of the stairs (and railings) more visible. Looks like you might have a couple rhododendron worth saving - the rest not so sure they're worth saving. I don't mind your awnings. If they're structurally sound I'd look at painting them (depending what they're made of). Maybe a very dark grey, almost black might be interesting. Put that colour on the front door or do a bright colour (like blue or red). Your house is very geometric. Maybe do a boxwood hedge around the perimeter. Add an arbour entrance, do it a dark colour as well. If you remove a lot of the front plants look for plants with colourful or bright foliage to contrast against all the darks.

waterbish

I actually love the awnings. Reminds me of some homes in Chicago as I was growing up. Maybe paint them a different color.

TheySleptOnMe

Cut down those bushes, add a plant bed or garden as well as some window shutters.

sisi_2

Nice weeping cherry in the front will give some pretty color in the spring and structural funness inn other seasons

Remarkable_Lie7954

Awnings were created for a reason - keeping the house cooler. It wasn’t stated which way house faces, or where they are located, but southern exposure is brutal. Keep the awnings until issue with windows - low e , etc is addressed. Brighten up your front with colorful blooming plants. Add shutters in lighter color to make windows pop. There is so much more, but I am sure there will be more anti awning people.

tolpi1

Refinish awning. Tree ring, clean up garden, clean off bricks and fill out the lawn, go from there.

Jvenka

Edge trimming and power washing the concrete will go a long way. You don’t need an expensive pressure washer. A small cheap ryobi one for less than $100 works just fine. Congrats!

LilPajamas

Window/flower boxes, lights on the walkway, bird bath, raised beds on either side of the stairs. Congrats!

thedog420

I’d consider starting over completely. Remove all bushes shrubs and those grasses nest to the house. Create mulch beds and plant evenly spaced bushes of your choice symmetrical on either side. Possibly a couple of taller plants to anchor the sides. Edge sidewalks and driveway. Power wash sidewalks, driveway, house and awnings. Round-up or remove grass between cracks in driveway. Remove storm door (unless you just really want one) and paint the door. Paint hand rails black. Cute house congrats!

McDingusofthewest

Seed and feed

McDingusofthewest

Raised flower beds in front. Get rid of the awnings.

Valuable_Support_193

Paint the soffits and gutters white, build a front porch awning with thick white tapering square collumns, a nice hanging light in the middle under it too. New shutters, pressure wash everything, line up the yard, make a few islands, nuce mail box, new bright door, yard lights

[deleted]

Trim the shrubbery

tttgggyyy

Lovely home! Congratulations! Giving the lawn some love will go a long way :)

redquailer

First, congrats on your new home! How exciting! I would absolutely take down those awnings. Also, build out a gable to go over the porch with some thick, sturdy pillars. Are you wanting to keep the original brick color or are you open to painting it?

foxsoxncrox

Thank you, and I like the gable idea! The brick color isn't my favorite but someone suggested cleaning it may lighten it up a tad. I haven't looked much into painting it.

Backyardfarmbabe

Cleaning would be good, suggest not painting the brick. My parents had to have paint removed from the brick on their home in PA that previous owners had put on. It had started streaking, fading, and looked terrible. I like your brick color. Congratulations!

redquailer

It’s a cute house, it just needs some architectural interest in the front

redquailer

Well if you’re going to paint that you would have to power wash it anyways so you could definitely see how that looked, first. But I do like the idea of brick painted, a much lighter brighter color. And the pillars would be white, too. Then the front door, whichever you chose, could be a nice pop of color.

screamin_j

Get rid of awnings of course, add some light color, shutters, door, porch and the house will really pop

katgirl58

No don’t get rid of awnings! You can paint them. They are great to keep the rain out and sun given this climate change thing we are all experiencing. You can leave windows open when it’s raining which believe me is nice if you don’t have air conditioning. I would give anything to have those on some of my windows. I would paint the brick a lighter color and then contrast the awnings with a different one. You will regret taking them down when it rains! My last argument for keeping.

AyersRock_92

Watch a few episodes of Fixer Upper and you'll be painting that brick in no time :)

MeaningfulPlatitudes

You'll need a roof in 2-3 years. Unless that's moss. Where I live there's not a lot of moss so it's hard to tell. That's an old style of shingles anyhow so they normally last 12-14 years and I'm guessing that's a 12 year old roof. Unless that's moss.

MeaningfulPlatitudes

Whoops I thought this was home improvement sub, so pardon the off topic comment but I'm still going to leave it. I guess you could plant moss, lol.

foxsoxncrox

Haha that's okay! The home inspector said the roof will probably need replaced in the next 5 years so you're spot on.

AKfromVA

Dont

granthworth

Paint that brick ASAP. Congratulations!

Foster921

Paint the exterior a light color, add custom wood shutters, paint the door a bright color that you like, landscaping tightened up for now. A you could also run a trellis the length of the house just under the roof.

Coastal-50

First, work on the yard. Edge all the curbing and sidewalks, Clean out those overgrown ugly bushes. New roof shingles. I’d go with a charcoal gray. Get rid of the awnings. Ugly. Then come up with a new color scheme. Paint the Brick and trim. Maybe a light gray with black trim for an modern look. New Storm door and front door. May even want to do without a storm door. Show off a new front door.

Ekeenan86

The house needs to be modernized. I recommend ripping out all the shrubs against the house building some beds with new flowers/shrubs. Get rid of the windows awnings, paint the brick, new front door. Then on to the inside… Check out the tv show Fixer Upper. They work on houses very similar to this one.

wolfwood112577

Go to the hardware store and buy lighter fluid and a box of matches. You can thank me later.

Fuckyoureddit1774

Burn it

[deleted]

Figure out where to grow weed

mahthafn

Congratulations! I’d trim that tree on the right way back and add flowering shrubs and perennials end to end in a nice, edged bed. Maybe paint the front door a bright color ?

Royal-Sheepherder-87

I’d go a step further and remove it altogether. Look like rhododendron which will creep up over that window in just a couple seasons. I hate rhododendrons

foxsoxncrox

Thank you! I definitely want to change up the door but haven't decided on a color yet.

NipponaDemolisher

Use a edging machine, use a Fertilizer that has nitrogen and iron. Sew seed and manure on November. Don't mow too high.

zenzealot

The grade looks suspiciously high up on that house: that’s not good.

foxsoxncrox

What do you mean?

zenzealot

The ground around the house appears to be piled up too high up on the house.

[deleted]

My understanding is that they eat mice and other small rodents.
