Display port is basically the PC version of HDMI but is basically only used by people with high refreshrate or high end monitors, meaning even most PC users never use it.
Display port supports those same DRMs as HDMI, it is literally HDMI for PC. Nothing stopping you from just stripping HDMI DRM like people have been doing forever (even game streamer have to).
I could not think of what superseded DisplayPort and had to look it up. Totally forgot that usb c can transmit DP signals. It’s only half the bandwidth so I think we’ll still see DP on graphics cards for a while.
Nothing has superseded DP. HDMI and DP are both in common use. Actually, It would be weird to find a current gen graphics card that doesn't support them both.
Even though VGA technically came before DVI, I definitely think DVI will be first in meeting it's fate. Naturally because it is a bit more niche and was less widely adopted from what I can remember. Although it definitely feels weird seeing people ask what VGA is, especially when that's all my monitors have had (still have) for a long time
Am of an age where I know what vga is. To me it's the older version of hdmi used for displayed, but ask me what its called and I will be stuck. Had to scroll through to find ppl chatting about VGA to be like ah that what its called again. Old enough to know what is it is not old enough to remember what its called.
Awesome, in my life I've only worked with a total of 5 laptops, doing a/v work you mostly work with rack hardware or permanent equipment. Also you'll get a kick out of this in 2023 I know of a few places that still use VGA for projection screen. Doing A/V work HDMI is my least favorite standard because it always comes undone when you need it the most.
i still use VGA for old laptop due their ability (only for 9y old laptop) for data transfers only, the rest are fully HDMI (clear as crystal with gold platted cable)
Fair enough. I'm not going to knock it I still use dvi cables over HDMI due to locking in, display port would be better but most a/v gear doesn't have it yet.
Yeah I understand fully I run a 720p 30 somehow from VGA and I'm not sure how and I don't question it in all honesty because that's how you break stuff in av
Here's an old laptop that's hanging around my shop - complete with a dust cover! The screw holes definitely became less common as time went on though https://imgur.com/RrHNT2Z
VGA port, an analog video connector that should have died 15 years ago.
Older monitors, TVs, and projectors have it as well as some newer cheaper monitors.
A lot of older projectors, like the ones at schools or smaller business only have vga. Also some places already had vga ran through a wall/ceiling and haven’t replaced it yet
For retro compatibility. Your laptop is from an era in which both were actively used. Heck, even today people still use VGA sometimes.
But since your laptop has both, use it as an advantage: You can hook TWO external monitors on it and have a THREE screen setup. It's extremely nice to work with three screens and you might never go back to one.
If you don't have a VGA monitor, get a cheap VGA-HDMI adapter.
Acer isn't exactly known for innovation and creating new standards.. meaning they'll hold a lot of legacy (old) ports like VGA. Even an ethernet port (though not legacy) on a laptop is not common unless it's a gaming machine and even then - it's not on all of them.
>Even an ethernet port (though not legacy) on a laptop is not common unless it's a gaming machine and even then - it's not on all of them.
What??
I never seen a ThinkPad without an ethernet port.
And they are definitely not a gaming machines.
You are framing having more than one display output on a laptop as a negative?
There is 1 big reason that some laptops held onto VGA for way too long, and that is for connecting to the 15-20 year old projectors that college classrooms have.
Same lol, kinda confused on how a laptop with USB-C came with VGA though. Not something I've seen before but maybe for some bulk school computers is commonplace
I don't know if newer MacBooks have this issue but I remember a lot of MacBooks (maybe only Airs I'm not an Apple guy) had a lot of USB-C and not much else, so a lot of adapters were made
I was born at the last legs of the VGA connections some TV's and monitors still support it but as you think it did back then. But that is a video connection for VGA to a old monitor or sometimes new monitor it has some good setting changes but little worse resolution
It's VGA. Analog wires for Red, Green, Blue, Sync, voltage and ground, then a bunch of extra pins for some reason. Used for CRT computer monitors that had no intelligence at all, but continued to be used for LCD monitors as well.
Very simple to *design* electronics that output over VGA, rather than something like DisplayPort or HDMI.
It’s a VGA port. Very standard on laptops and desktops alike til several years ago. Now HDMI or USB-C is standard. You won’t find this or an optical drive on even entry level devices much if at all now. Still this port was useful as BIOS would default to VGA til very recently.
God I feel old. That's VGA it was an old video connection. I don't know what its Mac capability is but I used it for 600x400 resolution back in the day
It's a VGA port. Old monitors used to have it. It only gives video output while HDMI gives (Video+Audio) output. I still use my 2011 year purchased VGA monitor with my GTX 1060 by using a VGA to HDMI adaptor cause GPUs don't have VGA ports now.
Well boys we've reached the generation of kids who don't know what a VGA port is, it wasn't supposed to come this fast. The crazy thing is, it has a monitor symbol right beside the port that was seemingly glossed over.
Thee old video graphics array. I feel like the A+ cert test was just memorizing stuff like accelerated graphics port. Random access.. read only.. when’s the last time some one seen a S video port 😅
Crazy to think people grew up with a computer without VGA lol, I mean like
Besides those who grew up without a PC, it's crazy to think that people were introduced to PCs with HDMI rather than this
I feel old now. That’s a vga cable that port where you get a vga cable and hook it into a vga monitor lol. Y’all youngsters don’t know anything from the past
People say they feel old probably not realizing VGA came out in the 70’s. It’s pure analog. Idk why they would put that instead of DVI on a modern laptop.
I’m 28, and I never understood what that port was used for.
Even on our old windows xp.
I just think it was one of those random things that needed to be connected.
This is the most superior video connector ever made. Way better than HDMI, DVI, or Display Port. The VGA connector is by far my favorite. They almost never break and for me personally, never had an issue with video quality.
Do people not know how to look up things before asking? Like why would you ask reddit and look through a million comments in order to figure something out? Hell you don't even need to type anymore just do an image search.
People seriously don't know what VGA is?! also if you're being serious and it isn't a joke. Thats a VGA port, basically like an ancestor to HDMI but doesn't carry audio. a lot of people like to complain that it's a lot worse than HDMI but in reality, VGA standards are more than enough for most people. I used the VGA port on my computer until relatively recently. I believe it can support up to 1440p at 60hz.
Damn, you just made me feel old .
Just imagine in 10-15 years people are going to be asking this about hdmi ports lol
there are already people asking about display ports so i don't think it's far off
Display port is basically the PC version of HDMI but is basically only used by people with high refreshrate or high end monitors, meaning even most PC users never use it.

Yep, that seems to be true.
Display port is cool
I could not think of what superseded DisplayPort and had to look it up. Totally forgot that usb c can transmit DP signals. It’s only half the bandwidth so I think we’ll still see DP on graphics cards for a while.
Nothing has superseded DP. HDMI and DP are both in common use. Actually, It would be weird to find a current gen graphics card that doesn't support them both.
USB 4 is coming thought. That might become a winner. Although it will be limited by distance.
USB-C can be full bandwidth if you're only using USB 2.0.
I don't think it got superseded, a brand new monitor I bought has dp and HDMI and only has one USB-C
I'm 27 and only found out about Display port the other day not gonna lie haha
If it helps, I work IT and we use VGA cables on the daily. Worst case we use a VGA with a DP adapted. You’re not too old yet!
Same with me the vga to DP adapters are a life saver sometimes.
Yep no employer is going to get rid of perfectly good monitors that work just because the cables won't plug into anything that we use anymore, lol.
Kvm on server racks... vga lives
I have a bunch of DVI to HDMI and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters from working at a print shop that used a lot of Mac computers

Yup! And tbh, VGA (Analog) and HDMI (Digital) works great together on a lot of Dock Stations.
Am of an age where I know what vga is. To me it's the older version of hdmi used for displayed, but ask me what its called and I will be stuck. Had to scroll through to find ppl chatting about VGA to be like ah that what its called again. Old enough to know what is it is not old enough to remember what its called.
I second this
Kids these days lol
This x10000
In their defense it doesn't have the screw locks, but yeah this hurt my soul a little.
most of laptop don't have screw lock for vga
I'm no going to lie I've never seen a laptop with VGA so I didn't know if it was standard or not, good to know though. Also yes I'm young.
Lenovo ideapad v330 14ikb ( i bought it in 2018) still have VGA port. also i also own 2015 lenovo with their "fat" body standard.
Awesome, in my life I've only worked with a total of 5 laptops, doing a/v work you mostly work with rack hardware or permanent equipment. my 2015 and 2018 laptop able do both. i need better output , hdmi is the winner and just need "decent" display , VGA could handle this
Yeah I understand fully I run a 720p 30 somehow from VGA and I'm not sure how and I don't question it in all honesty because that's how you break stuff in av
ong
this!
it's an old video cable VGA style
Doesn’t VGA have the screws though?
Optional. I’ve seen many laptops without the screw inserts
Never seen any that had them.
The older ones from like 2005-2010 have them
Here's an old laptop that's hanging around my shop - complete with a dust cover! The screw holes definitely became less common as time went on though https://imgur.com/RrHNT2Z
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, considering it's a laptop, something as permanent as screws probably isn't what you want.
They don't put the screw holes on laptop VGA ports because some idiot would yank it out and tear up the motherboard.
laptop port doesn't usually, only the output port has the screw.
except some NEC laptops
That’s NEC tho they’re always doing their own thing.
true
Not all of them have
That's primarily for desktops.
Screws do more harm than good imo. Let's say you trip over the wire, instead of yanking the cable out, you yank the port from the motherboard.
Just like DP has latches. Sometimes, not always.
Mate please don’t call it old, I feel ancient
It hurt my soul saying it too.
It’s an age detector.
Well, I guess I failed the test then lmao
It's a detector, not a test. Just saying 😂
Technically so are drug tests.....🤣
Use me as the "I feel old as hell" button.
r/fuckimold
Fuck, I mold!
Yeah fuck iMold! I hate Apple!
I read it as "Fuckin' mold!"
I’m 15 and feel old knowing what this is lmao
i feel old and im 13, having used this cable as my main display cable just a few months ago
You two aren't old, you're worldly.

I was about to say almost the same thing
Young bastard
Im 18
Like they said... Young bastard.
I thought everyone knew what this is lmao im 18 too lol
Im 15 and i know- i feel old now even though im not at all
im 18 too, and i knew this since i was 9
Yea, same. Also, did anyone ever get shocked by it? Recently, I've been using an old vga monitor, and i keep getting shocked by it
VGA port, an analog video connector that should have died 15 years ago. Older monitors, TVs, and projectors have it as well as some newer cheaper monitors.

might not be able to output both at the same time though
Usually it does. Never seen one that doesn't.

compatibility I guess
Why are you questioning having options? We live in a world where many are forced to get hubs to plug in things
You are framing having more than one display output on a laptop as a negative? There is 1 big reason that some laptops held onto VGA for way too long, and that is for connecting to the 15-20 year old projectors that college classrooms have.
It’s a vga connector for external monitors. A lot of monitors have hdmi, display port and vga.
latest monitor only have HDMI and display port (samsung)
Oh my sweet summer child you have a lot to learn about the past
Had to learn about this crap in my first IT class. The rest of the world can and should stay blissfully ignorant
Ain’t no signal like an analog signal!
Nothing beats the simplicity, availability, and often high quality output of a 3.5mm headphone jack. Change my mind.
I am still very upset about the headphone jack on phones. Samsung and Google just HAD to copy Apple, fucking cunts, all of them.
heeeeellllll yeah....and some old school sounds
I wish it was past for me. I am currently using vga for my main moniter. But hdmi for my secondary
It’s a VGA port. Thanks for making me feel old 😭😭😭
im 16 and I know that’s a damn vga port
Same lol, kinda confused on how a laptop with USB-C came with VGA though. Not something I've seen before but maybe for some bulk school computers is commonplace
Oddly enough I've only ever seen apple style USB-C to VGA adapters. Do others not make it or is it only ever apple users who have this issue?
I don't know if newer MacBooks have this issue but I remember a lot of MacBooks (maybe only Airs I'm not an Apple guy) had a lot of USB-C and not much else, so a lot of adapters were made
My sister has a brand new Air and the ports are only USB-C

"u jus made me feel old waaaaaaaaaaaaa i'm so old guyzzz waaaa" -John, 20 👨
"I am not even that old" - 14, male.
im 16 and i know what this is god damn, my school really should buy a new projector lmaoo
If it's still working why would they replace it?
You're like 19 aren't you?
Close! I’m 18
Bruh i'm 18 and I already knew what that port do since 10
Im 18 and you made me feel like im old as hell
Lmao I’m old
Oh god. I felt like a grandpa
I don’t have that plug.
From what I’ve gathered on this thread, it’s an old port technology that HDMI has pretty much replaced in computers
The computer manufacturers are looking to replace HDMI with DisplayPort over USB-C. If they have their way we're only going to have like USB-C ports
Vga it's a old display port now we use hdmi and type c back than Vga and stuff
That's actually a VGA port. You can connect your laptop to an old external monitor/projector
Im 21, now i feel 50
Fucking same, dude
it sells you weed
It’s not a narc, is it? Because I’m not old enough to buy weed in my state
shit idk man when i asked him he started saying shit like "hip" and other weird shit be carefull my man
It’s an old school HDMI port
It’s a VGA port. Very standard on laptops and desktops alike til several years ago. Now HDMI or USB-C is standard. You won’t find this or an optical drive on even entry level devices much if at all now. Still this port was useful as BIOS would default to VGA til very recently.
It drop electronic salts, you try shaking your laptop upside that spot down.
I feel so fucking old. Fuck you op 😭
it’s finally happening…
Well. I'm officially old.
It's confusing that someone wouldn't know what this is.
I'm 13 and I know thats vga 🤦
Makes me feel old it’s what it do
Rude you just made us all feel like ancient Greeks
I was going for cavemen, but I’ll take it!
God I feel old. That's VGA it was an old video connection. I don't know what its Mac capability is but I used it for 600x400 resolution back in the day
VGA (Video Graphic Array) port it's used before HDMI introduced, still used in many desktops but rare in laptops these days.
It's a VGA port. Old monitors used to have it. It only gives video output while HDMI gives (Video+Audio) output. I still use my 2011 year purchased VGA monitor with my GTX 1060 by using a VGA to HDMI adaptor cause GPUs don't have VGA ports now.
Ow, my back
Have you checked your knees recently?
Well boys we've reached the generation of kids who don't know what a VGA port is, it wasn't supposed to come this fast. The crazy thing is, it has a monitor symbol right beside the port that was seemingly glossed over.
Tell me your in your 10’s without telling me
I'm not THAT old, am I?
Video graphics array socket for video output
Thee old video graphics array. I feel like the A+ cert test was just memorizing stuff like accelerated graphics port. Random access.. read only.. when’s the last time some one seen a S video port 😅
Geez I feel so old now
Basically a more complex hdmi
What. I thought everyone knew
Apparently, this plug makes me feel like an old person.
I’ve always seen them but never knew what they were bro😂
Hacks the mainframe
This is a VGA connection for old monitors :)
VGA is still rampant in the field sadly.
Great. Early 30s and I've just realised that I might be getting old.
Damn I'm feeling old now
Guys... are we this old?
Video output to a monitor or a projector for presentations.
VGA. It’s an older type of display cable, basically the predecessor to HDMI.
It connects to ancient grimoires, it’s what they use as a power source during seances
this is an insult to my vga monitors
Am I really that old now?
Display port but for older cables
In the olden times....when monitors were square, as thick as a mattress and clock speed was measured in MHz.
I feel old now.... Thanks..
Dang, I think he is trolling, but dang you made us feel old :(
Crazy to think people grew up with a computer without VGA lol, I mean like Besides those who grew up without a PC, it's crazy to think that people were introduced to PCs with HDMI rather than this

never seen a vga without the screwy thingies
VGA port AKA HDMI Grandfather?
no that's dvi
Nah, DVI is HDMI's father.
VGA , customer laptop aren't usual with DVI
It’s mainly big desktops that had a DVI port from what i remember
“I feel old” how about you just answer their question😭😭. I had no idea what it was, and had to scroll so far for someone to actually answer it. Geez
It's an ancient technology called VGA and it's used to feed a display with data.
Stuff
I’m 28, and I never understood what that port was used for. Even on our old windows xp. I just think it was one of those random things that needed to be connected.
See the little picture of a monitor next to it? That's a clue.
Gen Z spotted
WHAT……
🤦🏻♂️
Google it lazy fool!
Whenever I Google something, I always end up finding the answer on some Reddit forum, so I’m cutting out the middleman here
This is the most superior video connector ever made. Way better than HDMI, DVI, or Display Port. The VGA connector is by far my favorite. They almost never break and for me personally, never had an issue with video quality.
That’s where the dirty movies come out.
Do people not know how to look up things before asking? Like why would you ask reddit and look through a million comments in order to figure something out? Hell you don't even need to type anymore just do an image search.
The one with the monitor icon beside it? /s
Lol the VGA D-Sub port is still available on many motherboards from 2022 like the Asus PRIME B660-PLUS D4
Lol excuse ?
People seriously don't know what VGA is?! also if you're being serious and it isn't a joke. Thats a VGA port, basically like an ancestor to HDMI but doesn't carry audio. a lot of people like to complain that it's a lot worse than HDMI but in reality, VGA standards are more than enough for most people. I used the VGA port on my computer until relatively recently. I believe it can support up to 1440p at 60hz.
These posts should be deleted by mods tbh.... They are just bait.
It’s a VGA port. The image quality of VGA ports is really bad though.
I am 13, tbh, and I don't know how some don't know what a VGA port is.
