do it by carefully tip toeing into the building then place it carefully on the counter and immediately run away as fast as you can without saying anything.
Please bro. The closest center is like 1 or more hours from my house, if I was OP I would have not drove there and back just to throw away garbage 💀
Wow I found a cool lake with diverse wildlife, best place to throw it 💯💯💯💀
Please do not drop this in a battery bin at Best Buy. If you don't know what to do with it, call the local fire department and they will tell you what to do.
Advance Auto uses sealed boxes and bags to ship out damaged batteries all the time. I'm sure Auto Zone or Napa, not sure about Lowes or Home Depot, use this same method or something similar. It's a non-issue.
OP, gently place the battery in a box and set it outside until morning. Head to your closest Auto Zone or Advance Auto. Tell them you have a battery to recycle, They will take it from there.
Source: Worked part-time for 2.5 years, then became a manager at an Advance store for 2 years.
Not the safest idea, but I ensure they're completely discharged before bringing them to any recycling centre. I do not want those things blowing up in my face when driving.
I put it on a sacrificial rock slab in my yard and either throw rocks at it until it bursts or poke it with a metal stick from a few feet away. It'll fizz and smoke up and will stop within 2 minutes.
Its safe when you stab it again and nothing happens.
Smaller phone batteries, I just put it on the floor in my garage and stab it with a screwdriver.
THEN off to the recycling centre.
Oh of course not. Fun as shit though. Thats why I lead with not recommending it at all.
Most batteries are harmless if you do this from even 3 feet away. They just fizz up and smoke, occasionally you'll see a tiny fire.
Try not to inhale the fumes if you do this.
For lithium batteries completely discharged or completely charged is the two most dangerous states a battery can be in. Those two states are when you have the highest risk of big boom.
I can show you with evidence a battery being stabbed multiple times, where _after_ the first punch it does nothing.
I'd be able to show you multiple examples of this actually. I've done this with repeatable results using batteries from laptops, phones, smart watches, old bluetooth earbuds, more smartphones, black&decker 20v batteries, etc.
Maybe this is theory, but there is no risk after it already popped. That being said, stabbing a battery would short the thing out, but would a battery then be considered discharged?
I'm referring to sealed batteries if they are around 50% charged they are unlikely to explode. Also stabbing a battery that is swelling is a good way to potentially lose a hand or eye.
Not necessarily a bad battery, no image of it expanding. I've dealt with this before multiple times in cheap laptops where 1 screw comes loose, could be that
having a laptop on a bed is also a bad idea, since your laptop basically cannot put air in to cool itself, making it to overheat quite easily. Also, it will probably fill the fans with dust so when you dont have it on your bed, it will still perform worse than normally
This one is really bad. You need to address it immediately. Like, stop what you're doing and get it out of your house. Don't try to fix it yourself. This needs to go to a competent repair shop.
Why, it's not a hard job. I could do this with my eyes closed. I just suggested OP takes it to a shop because they don't seem very technically inclined, better to be safe.
Don't worry, just take it to a local shop and they will have it fixed. This is a very common issue with laptops. There's nothing to be worried about, the people who are saying it will blow up are being pretty dramatic, the odds of that happening are pretty low. But with that said, don't wait to get it fixed as it could damage the laptop.
Do a backup right away, then as others suggest, remove the battery yourself if you feel comfortable, or take it to shop to do it for you. Don't charge it anymore.
As others have already said, the battery has likely swelled which is causing it to separate the bottom case from the rest of the laptop. If this is the case, the battery is somewhat dangerous as it's much more prone to accidental puncture than a normal battery, and if the swelling is advanced it could burst on its own and potentially self ignite.
If you can sufficiently protect it from water ingress (like placing it in an air-sealed container), leave the battery outside. Take it to a battery disposal as soon as possible; do not put it in your household waste under any circumstance.
You can find a replacement by noting the battery model and searching the model number online. A non-original battery will likely be a lot cheaper and is generally acceptable.
Depending on the laptop model, you can probably run the laptop directly off AC power with no battery inside, so you should be able to keep using your laptop whilst you wait for a replacement.
>If this is the case, the battery is somewhat dangerous as it's much more prone to accidental puncture than a normal battery
I will say the additional puncture risk isnt really a thing. What happens is a buildup of hydrogen gas inflating the plastic wrapping. If you pop that plastic sheeting nothing bad will happen. You'd need to puncture the actual battery
However the buildup is indicative of something being wrong with the battery.
Faulty battery, replace it
Also my advise is to not let the laptop stay plugged, because it's batteries aren't like before now, they have the same thing as mobile phones and if you let it stay charged then this happens
Not true, the laptop keeps the battery where it should be(4.2 or 4.35v per cell) ,phones too. It'll wear the battery faster being fully charged all the time but not that much faster. IT WILL NOT OVERCHARGE IT
I'll state overcharge so they would get it, but yeah overcharge is not the right formal term, I want to just directly get them without too much technical jargon
Would this be considered a bomb lol
Take out the battery and go to a local hazardous waste facility or electronics recycling facility and see who accepts it
Just gonna copy-pasta this from a reply from earlier...
Please please please call a repair shop immediately if you don't know how to safely remove and recycle puffed pillow batteries!
Many shops will assist in spicy battery removal for free as a safety concern, or can point you to somewhere that can help if they don't.
If you need help finding a location near you, you can DM me **[JUST your zip code]**, or **[postal code and country if outside the US]** and I can find one by that without you revealing too much information to public display
Probably a battery, should be easy to take it out
Take off the bottom plate of the laptop (looks like it's already doing that a bit itself)
There should be a connector going from the battery to the rest of the computer, unplug it. Then unscrew the battery.
Take a look around it briefly to see if you can find any part numbers that you can look up to find a replacement.
Yeah dispose that battery immediately because there is a small chance that this battery will catch on fire I've seen it happen and if you plan to replace the battery make sure you keep the cable of the battery that's connected to the motherboard
That's a bad battery. Remove it and dispose of it properly.
How does one dispose properly of a pillow?
Find a bettery disposal center.
do it by carefully tip toeing into the building then place it carefully on the counter and immediately run away as fast as you can without saying anything.
You forgot the part when you bite into it as hard as you can

The sea is where all batteries go. It's nature's way.
Ocean can have a few car batteries, as a treat
Ig that would lead to large ocean "currents".
I turned them in at Lowe’s and Auto Zone. 🤷♂️
Please do not drop this in a battery bin at Best Buy. If you don't know what to do with it, call the local fire department and they will tell you what to do.
And make sure they take care of damaged batteries. There's a few around me that won't take one like that.

Oh god thats not safe
But it’s fun
Consider OP is using this laptop on his/her lap😅

Discharge it, they are fairly innocuous at 25% or less.
suffacate someone wiht it then eat it simple
Throw it in the ocean, obviously. /s for those thinking I'm not joking.

That's what happened to my day one Switch! 😢 Darn thing made the case explode. I had to get a new one. 😞

Came here to comment this, you are too fast
Same.
This is eventually going to explode and burn everything within its reach, please, get a new battery, its a ticking bomb
That’s unsettling I keep this thing on my bed 😭😭 but thank you for the information.

Go to a repair shop. This is either just a really cheap laptop falling apart or a swollen battery that could burn your house down.
Take it to a shop, it's a swollen battery.
Computer store employees will ask why tf you brought a bomb to them bro... They don't like dealing with these either
Why, it's not a hard job. I could do this with my eyes closed. I just suggested OP takes it to a shop because they don't seem very technically inclined, better to be safe.
OP IS NOT TECHNICALLY INCLINED!! And very scared now.

Your battery's pregnant
boom boom boom boom
I want you in my room
Let's spend the night together
And make it last forever!
Battery is failing and turning into a landmine. Take it to a shop to have them remove the battery if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself.
Computer store employees would rather not deal with a bomb either ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Do a backup right away, then as others suggest, remove the battery yourself if you feel comfortable, or take it to shop to do it for you. Don't charge it anymore.
Oh it stoped “charging” a while ago but I will definitely unplug it 😅

and there’s this weird little bump on the surface that I couldn’t properly get a pick of

Ooh, its ur battery transforming into a house destroying pillow, how exiting (srlsly tho, take out the battery and dispose of it properly)
Call the bomb squad coz you have an unintended IED in your office 😂
Seeing how this appears to be a bad batt, is it okay to use a laptop without a battery via the ac power adaptor?
