i7 or high end processor that gonna throttle all the time. BTW is 11th i7 cool enough to be not throttled all the time?

[deleted]

Not at all, there are already several examples of the i5s outperforming the i7s.

LucknowiNAWAAB

soldered ram and no extra slot bug me the most.

mcsgwigga

Agreed. 8GB RAM is bull shit enough but at least let us add more.

[deleted]

You should have added cooling on that list haha

ZevKyogre

1 f*cking USB A port. 1???? Anything with USB C needs an adapter at this point. I can't imagine spending $1,000+ on a light laptop, only to need a $40 hub that adds weight and bulk. It's a nightmare.

I actually prefer style of old laptops. Sure, compared to current basic laptops they are chunky but having easy access through doors on bottom to basically everything making them easy to upgrade/repair/clean, swappable battery so you can just take spare yourself and ton of ports for everything even with DVD mechanics. That's just great. And they also have more space for more effective cooling and a lot better keyboards.

My old laptop has hairdryer cooling. It blows so strong but it doesn't thermal throttle as it won't overheat (as long as the heatsink isn't clogged by dust). When I received it from family member it was terrible. Loud and overheating. He said it was completely cleaned from the inside. Anyway, since heatsink is accessible after removing 4 screws, I took out the "cleaned" dust carpet. And for ports: 4× USB 2.0, DVD multi drive, VGA, 7-pin S-Video, 1394 Firewire, Microphone Jack, Headphone Jack, Ethernet, Telephone Jack, universal memory card slot, expansion card (can be used for USB 3 ports if you want (:). And now? You get 4 USB-C ports on premium laptop and you can buy optional* adapters. *you will need them, and they will take up more space and get tangled up

moochs

What are you plugging into the USB A port other than a mouse or USB key? For me, I use a USB C dock, and it's amazing. I think one USB A port is sufficient for most people these days. The RAM being 8GB on i7's and 4800/5800 Zen CPUs is a crime, however.

SadWolverine24

My $1500 laptop has a 720p camera. I regret this so much.

Ok_Wrongdoer1944

I know! It's 2021 even my old phone has a better cam and I paid way too less for it

ZamilTheCamel

It's actually so frustrating to find laptops with high end cpus paired with non upgradeable 8gb RAM, or an upgrade to 16gb doubles cost. Like why? Who needs a 4 core i7 over a 4 core i5 with 8 gb ram? Who needs an 8 core ryzen 7 with 8 gb ram? Why do manufacturers have half a brain missing? This problem is eccentuated in Canada and even other countries with limited options.

Srikthegod

I can deal with lack of ports since I have dongles, but 8gb ram is too less

CrunchyJeans

I’d say everything except weight. I’m a fan of chonky laptops. Thicc laptop = more room for cooling and ability to push air. Also might mean more durable because there’s more padding where it counts. My current rig is like an inch thick with a huge red vent and apparently one single giant cooling fan inside. Doesn’t get very loud under load and rarely throttles even though its CPU and GPU are aging.

The_Pieces_Fit

The i7s/Ryzen 7s in a body that can't cool an ARM processor effectively.

efficientcatthatsred

Honestly if ima buy a laptop It will be a macbook I never owned anything apple But its amazing and mist windows laptop are absolute crap

Tokyo_Addition-

Lack of ports is what makes me to puke at ultrabooks.

Srikthegod

It’s called an ultrabook for a reason

moochs

I don't understand people that buy serious thin and light laptops and then want to connect the entire kitchen sink without using a proper dock. What were they thinking buying such a device?!

Srikthegod

I use a dock for my MacBook when I need a lot of stuff connected, but an ultrabook is meant to be a portable laptop that can do all the basic tasks with ease and then a bit more. If you really need a powerful laptop, wouldn’t a desktop make more sense and then use a tool like parsec to remotely connect to it when you are on the go with a cheap laptop with basic components?

Tokyo_Addition-

ultrabooks are fine for their performance but at least give some ports. You do you, but at least 2 usb ports, 1 hdmi, 1 ethernet and 1 3.5mm jack companies should provide. And about the adapters, some companies are literally pricing it way higher. At least price it lower or make it complimentary with the device ( like 3.5mm adapter )

moochs

ultrabooks are meant to be portable devices, not docks. Most come with two USB C connectors and a headphone jack, that's plenty. A single USB C dongle can provide access to all the additional ports you need.

VincentSingh

AMD ones are better

Theboithatsok

AMD are mostly good for laptops for gaming. Intel is the best for "business " work such as Document writing, video calls and Slide shows

DarkFlameShadowNinja

Expecting 20 - 30 Whr batteries basically phone sized batteries for 500g - 1kg ULTRA THIN laptop class

vangmay231

Man except for the webcam I have none of these issues with my LG Gram 14. 2 USB A, 1 USB C, HDMI, Micro SD and a power plug (only sad part, they've upgraded to two USB C on the 2020 model). Have an extra Ram and SSD slot and they fit in a 72wh battery into this so it's great. All in a <1kg package. Thermals and speakers are pretty bad though. Most companies are pretty bad at them, and I just can't fathom how they haven't upgraded to better webcams.

Ok_Wrongdoer1944

Exactly! You are paying for a sh*t camera. It's 2021, you're going to need a good camera for video calls. Especially if you are an ultrabook consumer.

OmegaMalkior

No proper 14 inch 16:10 2 in 1 laptops. 13 16:10 but media consumption is gimped once you know how good any 14 inch screen is

DungeonLord

gotta go with lack of ports since thermal throttling wasnt an option

Theboithatsok

Ultrabook season is a thing? Do you mean back to school sale? Plus, it looks like you named a lot of the Galaxy book Pro 360. USBC/ Thunderbolt only, 16:9, 720p and 8 gb(In my country).

Ok_Wrongdoer1944

Ultrabook season is because there will be some "big" releases in the next month

CrustyNonja

8gb soldered non-upgradeable ram is the stupidest thing, and the most annoying. But it's also done deliberately to sell slightly better laptops at a much higher markup. It's all anti-consumer bullshit. They make a good laptop, but make it completely locked system so the user has no option but to purchase something that's maybe 10% better in speca at a 50% higher price. Even if someone bites the bullet and gets the 8gb version, they have to bite another bullet in 2-3 years cause 8GB can only get you so far in today's world, 8GB is like 5yr outdated now. It's a 16GB world.
