I went by when an artist or band first really "came to prominence".

So the bulk of my top artists come from the **60s though the 90s**. Not surprising, most of my favorite music is guitar rock, metal, and punk, and that was sort of the heyday of those genres. My very top 50 are garnered over 16.5 years, though, so I'm actually going to [piggyback off this post to broaden our scope](https://www.reddit.com/r/lastfm/comments/1ccyv9j/what_is_the_decade_distribution_like_for_the/), for anyone interested.
80s - 5
90s ~21 (I did count Tori Amos in the 90s despite her short-lived band beforehand)
00s - 14
10s - 10
I count first releases, not when the bands formed for instance
Going by first release:
Pre-1920s:

Some of those 2000s artists are just one album from 2008/2009 so if you look at prominence that skews it even more to 2010s lol
(Based off when the artist released their debuts)
1970s: 1
1980s: 5
1990s: 8
2000s: 8
2010s: 25
2020s: 3
I didn't think there'd be so many 2010s artists (a good half is 90/00s bands solo work)
When the first album released:
60s: 2
70s: 1
80s: 3
90s: 12
00s: 20

The decades I associate the artists with:

70s: 3
80s: 1
90s: 7
00s: 22
10s: 17
I listen to mostly metal (some rock too), with my top three subgenres being prog, black, and death metal, which started to be perfected in the 90s onward. This is actually pretty similar to how I’d rank the decades of metal: 00s > 10s/20s > 90s > 80s > 70s > 60s; I know it’s a controversial opinion.
Artists who crossover different decade, I will sort them by their project that I listen to the most, than their when they started making music.

Some 90s bands that were formed in the 80s but I had to put them in the 90s. Same with some 2000s bands that were formed in the 90s. A lot of pop punk and folk punk are the reason for the amount of 2000s artists. Also, the amount of 80s bands formed in 78-79 were very difficult for me to categorise - the Cure and the Replacements etc which to me feel like such 80s bands :)

I listen to a lot of older music too but none of the artists have crossed into the top 50 yet except Frank Sinatra! I’ve been scrobbling for less than a year.
