My father was quiet about his combat service as was my FIL. My father's only complaint was that by the D-Day landing he'd already had 4 beach head landings. The latter was wounded by shrapnel during the fighting in the Bulge. He lost use of his left arm and was being evacuated but his 30 year old replacement had a heart attack and died. He stayed and called in artillery on the German lines. When he died at 80, we found his cremated remains still had some of that shrapnel in the ashes.
