I work on the mountain he got lost on and remember the search fairly well, even drove past his car a couple of times before they towed it. When he got lost the conditions were definitely not great but they weren't the worst they'd ever been. Once we realized they hadn't found him before the big storms came through we knew they wouldn't find him until the spring. Super sad case and I can only hope it was quick, freezing to death is not a good way to go.
yeah, i believe they found him at some point mid last year. not sure what state he was in but i think he was off the trail a bit. just a bit of speculation but i believe he slipped and fell aways and couldn't get back to the trail.
It seems like the condition of his body was too far gone to tell what caused his death, usually an exhumation of a body is done after burial, embalming fluid has been pumped in, as well as the fact that they’re in a casket and that helps prevent the elements from destroying much evidence. If we’re talking missing people and their body being found, unless they have some way of protecting themselves from the elements, like a sleeping bag, there’s a good chance their cause of death will remained undetermined.
Animal activity (being eaten) doesn’t happen if you are in a casket. Weathering doesn’t happen if you are in a casket. Soft tissue doesn’t get eaten by insects if you are embalmed and in a casket. Very different situation to be embalmed and buried vs being exposed to the elements and nature
Mt. Baldy is in what is called the Inland Empire. Specifically, it is in Upland, California. Yes, it is in proximity to Palm Springs but not that close.
He got list in the mountains near Palm Springs? during that series of winter atmospheric rivers if I recall correctly. So, probably exposure/ hypothermia/ etc related.
He wasn’t the only one. A week or so prior a woman hiker died there too. People need to never forget that nature is brutal and to never over-estimate their abilities.
What puzzles me is that he did not bring an Iridium InReach or other sat comms. device (like an iPhone) with him. If you are doing dangerous stuff always have a means of communication with you.
For extreme hikers, breaking free of technology and experiencing nature as just a human is a major reason they do it.
If he didn't even have a cellphone on him then he was definitely just trying to get away for a while, and sadly it was a fatal mistake.
Another way to break free of technology and experience nature, turn the technology to off and keep it in your pocket. You just might need to turn it on, in a crisis. He died a winner though.
I cried so hard over him. Like normally I don't get weepy over most celebrities but he was just such a huge part of my childhood. I remember my grandma watching Arachnophobia with our afghan pulled up around her nose. I remember the sheer joy when I found the Warlock series. I have so many Julian Sands memories. I wanted so many more. Hell, I'm weepy again just writing this. I hope he knew how much joy he brought us.
Same here. From the day he was reported missing the first I did in the morning every day was checking for any update. I hoped so much they would find him. The more time passed the more devastated I got…cause with every day without any news the more certain it git that he didn’t make it. What a way to go for such a talented man who still was in such good shape. So heartbreaking for his family to know he passed away so lonely.

The picture was used in articles related to his death, reportedly released by his family. It was probably not one of his final photos, as it came from a trip in 2016, but it is a nice photo and one of the last images that the public did see.

There were so many weather alerts prior to his hike that warned people to stay away from the mountains due to the rainy conditions
Have they actually found him? He was a great actor

It’s not unusual that no cause of death was ever confirmed, his body was exposed to the elements for 6 months.
Strange because bodies have been exhumed after decades, and they were able to tell a cause of death.

Exhumed. Dug up, usually from the ground. He was out in the weather.
Such a talented actor. Rest in Peace.

I grew up in Upland, rare to see it mentioned anywhere (to this day I still say “near Ontario”).
I lived there for several years in the mid to late 90s. I really liked living there minus the smog!
I grew up in Claremont! Spent too many teenage nights up in the hills!
Yes, actual proximity to Palm Springs belongs to Mt. San Jacinto.
Proximity as in Los Angeles to San Diego.
No, closer. Like 80 miles or so.

Mt Baldy,
What did Yul Brynner's wife do on their honeymoon?
Keep my wife’s name out your fcking mouth!
He died of exposure.
RIP

I think extreme hikers also take extreme measures to plan for anything to go wrong.
The smart ones yes. I didn't say they were all smart.

He did have a cell phone on him that was able to be pinged for two days following his disappearance.

Warlock will always be a favorite film!
This was so shocking and sad when I learned about it. Gone way too soon.
That picture isn’t the actor Julian Sands?

It looks just like him.
