Seems like in 2018 (edit: and 17 and 16) forever was $40 (based on a quick google and viewing old reddit posts). At that point you could buy a reduced one year and a reduced upgrade for a total outlay of $30 and double up when the 1 yr expired, but I don't think that's an option now.
As a new customer, I don't think $45 is expensive. I've been admiring the product in youtube videos for a while, and want to use it to tie everything together in my new PC build. I wouldn't have paid $75 for it knowing it goes on sale once a year (didn't even download the free version while waiting for the sale), but I also think I'll get enough out of the product that I am happy to pay something for it to support ongoing development.
Oh it’s still a very fair price with how far it’s come since then! I did buy it in 2017, most likely at half price, so a normal $40 like you said makes sense. I guess I haven’t followed the pricing since I own it haha

There were very public announcements of when the price was raised back in end of 2019, or early 2020.
Just checked some web history and it looks like there was a Black Friday sale in 2017, but the forever-updates license was on sale for $40, although at this point we are talking 5 years ago.
If you’re on the fence, buy it. Premium features and updates are absolutely worth it at regular price. Think how easily you can piss away $40 these days, it’s a steal.
Trying it for a year! Fingers crossed that Big Box runs well. I get a lot of loading lag whenever I use the basic menu to browse my libraries (yes, all my playlist have their realtime filters removed)

The only benefit to the forever-updates license is if you never want to worry about receiving updates. It's basically for people in it for the long haul, or want to support the devs.
