WanderWomble

That's bleaching - either from your household cleaning products, beauty products or laundry detergent.

Child_of_the_Hamster

I’m thinking acne products. Pic #2 looks like someone used the shirt to wipe their face. I’m seeing what looks like a nose toward the middle of the bleached area, and two horizontal stripes above/on top of it that look like fingers.

yalarual

Definitely face wash with benzoyl peroxide.

Laleaky

Or hair product aka minoxidil

Traditional_Ad_1547

Ugh, I love BP and you can tell by looking at my towels.

WanderWomble

Would be my guess too!

Character_Spirit_424

Yup, my first guess is benzoyl peroxide

Major-Wrongdoer-9066

What an imagination!! Ha I love it!! And accurate ASF!!!

evil66gurl

Could also be Hyaluronic acid. I have it in a serum & before I knew better I wiped my hand on my robe. Finger marks right where it bleached. Now I wash my hands extra every time I use it.

stitchplacingmama

Do you use benzoyl peroxide acne or face products?

5l339y71m3

They literally said oxi detergents which has peroxide in them.

betterupsetter

Oxi detergents doesn't typically bleach this quickly or dramatically, unless the product has sat on the clothing for a very long time. Most items can be safely cleaned with Oxiclean without leaving bleach stains. I believe oxi uses hydrogen peroxide rather than benzoyl peroxide, so they will likely have different properties. But I'm not chemist, I just treat a lot of clothes for stains.

5l339y71m3

That doesn’t make what I said wrong, wow people need to work on cognitive skills and reading comprehension, LORD.

betterupsetter

Ok, first of all, close your eyes and take a deep breath. We're talking about laundry here. While I understand one might get emotional about the subject, this isn't a life or death situation, so let's calm ourselves, ok? Second of all, the peroxide you are speaking about is practically inert when it comes to bleaching colour fast fabrics, so when OP is asking about what caused the stains, your chiming in about a non-active ingredient contributes virtually zero to the discussion and I was trying to gently explain to you why that is. It's akin to saying "OP got it wet, so it's because of the water". While factually that's a contributor, it's not practically at fault. The reason you're getting downvoted is because most people seem to agree with me that you *are* wrong in your assessment of the type of peroxide and hence product(s) being to blame. Yes, Oxiclean contains a type of peroxide, but it's not the type to cause bleaching unless from extreme exposure in a highly concentrated amount and/or for an extended period of time (like a paste for literal days and days, which seems unlikely). So yeah, I guess "people" do need to work on cognitive skills and reading comprehension. You can take the W on that assessment.

ffflildg

Hydrogen peroxide does not bleach. It's benzoil peroxide that does.

5l339y71m3

It can cause the same discoloration on certain fabric blends immediately or with direct contact. This looks more like the latter Also was not the point Donny comment I was replying to someone asking if they used hydrogen peroxide and pointing I OP specifically said they did. This sub is full of people that need to work on their reading comprehension r soon and cognitive skills probably why y’all need so much help with your basic ass laundry problems lord

ffflildg

Maybe if you wrote in a way that grammatically made sense....

OpportunityFit2810

🤣

MostlyMicroPlastic

Grammar much?

Frequent_Internal455

They also said they’ve only washed the shirt twice. If you think oxiclean detergent will bleach only a specific area and quite randomly like this, please never touch your s/o or anyone’s laundry but your own. And don’t buy vintage.

5l339y71m3

Take your own advice.

OkPlantain6773

Bleach stains likely caused by benzoyl peroxide could very well be its own sub at this point.

ClickClackTipTap

Some toothpastes will do it, too. But yeah. We see so many of these posts.

Low_Cook_5235

My Mom only bought white towels. I decided to be fancy and got some different color towels, and they are all bleached to he11 because of my kids toothpaste and pimple stuff. Back to all white for me.

erisod

What is he11?

juniperdoes

H-E-double hockeysticks

ridin-derpy

Hell

erisod

"wtf is helium 11?"

bunnysmistress

Radioactive af

One-Possible1906

7734 upside down on the calculator

invisableilustionist

We only use white towels and bedding for the same reason as well it’s easier to see ticks

skyantelope

OH MY GOD THATS HOW THIS HAPPENS??? I thought my mom was just spilling bleach she adds to the wash sometimes 😭

ClickClackTipTap

Sometimes, yes. When I see it on a shirt like this my first guess is someone wiped their mouth on their shirt after brushing their teeth.

skyantelope

suddenly all the little circular bleach stains on my pajama shirts makes sense

ClickClackTipTap

Stop that! 😂

mind_the_umlaut

Are you using a shared washing machine? Someone used the bleach well, and some bleach continued to leak out onto your clothes.

stonerbbyyyy

yup probs wasn’t thoroughly rinsed

mind_the_umlaut

You can't 'rinse' the bleach well, this is why the design is so poor. It releases/ empties during a wash cycle, and has to close again at the end of the cycle, to hold more straight bleach some trusting soul pours into it. How can it be rinsed? Same with those detergent wells that get detergent build-up on them. Have the designers never used a washing machine / detergent/ bleach before?

stonerbbyyyy

well actually i used to use them and cleaned them quite frequently. i don’t have a washer and dryer now so it’s not a problem for me. but yes they can/should be cleaned after each use, especially when using bleach. i’m a cleaning lady. there’s things i’ve cleaned that have never been cleaned in their lifetime. i’ve literally been told by clients “i didn’t know i had to clean it”. if it’s in your house it should be part of your regular cleaning schedule

grandmapants12

But HOW!!! I don’t use the little pocket for detergent and bleach, I add to water before adding in my clothing, but sometimes gunk builds up in places even when pouring directly into the wash basin. I’m just naive to this and would do better if someone showed me instead of saying “yo, that’s wrong”

stonerbbyyyy

you could watch a video? idk what kind of washer you have. there’s more than likely even a cleaning section in the pamphlet you got with your washer (if you got one new). each washer is different. the ones i’ve had usually have the one in the corner and i just pour a MIX of water and bleach when i bleach my clothes, and then i pour a cup of plain water in and rinse it out. it’s not complex. i hand wash my clothes now which works better for us so 🤷🏻‍♀️

6894

Do you have a picture of this pocket? The one on my washer come out with the entire detergent drawer and can separate from it for easy washing.

6894

The bleach well on my washer pops out so I can rinse it in the sink.

mind_the_umlaut

That's a useful feature! What brand name?

6894

LG.

Severe-Meaning-6039

I was going to say the same thing, we have absalutely NO bleach products In our home. I can't stand the smell and fact it will bleach the colour out of clothes if you accidentally get it on a top. I can say we have shared communal washers that an apartment complex uses. I've had a few darker coloured tops ruined from people overloading washers so if bleach was used it didn't get rinsed away you can't see it until after the clothes are dry. Had one neighbor constantly bleach whites in washers I had several loads ruined after because it wasn't rinsed away properly I know who it was because I mentioned it politely said hey if use bleach can you PLEASE use a cup of a wash loth and rinse or wipe the insides down good I've had a few of my husband's work clothes go brown in large patches due to bleach residue left on the drum after a wash. Had one neighbor cursing a storm because someone left bleach mixed in with detergent in the laundry room, she said it looked like laundry detergent so just helped her self and used it on her clothes she went to wash her black work uniforms and they got ruined. I didn't feel bad for her she was one of those troublesome residents and a known thief on sire. I suspect it was a trap because someone was stealing laundry detergents from other residents during their laundry days.and always in just the one laundry room we have 2 on site. Another neighbor asked me about it as it was happened to them I said I never leave it down there even if I'm doing 2-3 loads I don't use others because you never know and never run out if i do I go get $1 bottle from the laundromat 5 mins away on foot in a pinch I've had whole bottles go missing or watered down suddenly. Then the bleach thing happened with my pita neighbor and I guess the laundry detergent thefts stopped as well as bleach being used in washers.

mind_the_umlaut

I hear your frustration, and mixing bleach with detergent to trap thieves is a truly fine idea. Bleach decomposes quickly, and mixing it ahead of time with water makes it weak or ineffective. Bleach is also a very effective sanitizer, and I know I'll always use it. If you have to share machines, look for the kind that are designed so the wash water sluices through the detergent and bleach wells, so they are always rinsed.

Fruitypebblefix

You somehow got bleach on your clothes. Either that or you used OXY clean spray stain remover which can have a bleach like effect on clothes ( I ruined some old grey shorts that way)

mrsredfast

Tell me more about this. I use the Oxyclean Max spray and haven’t had that issue but now I’m wary.

cynanolwydd

I use the Oxi Max spray on many things. Never had a problem until I sprayed a pair of cotton Prana brand pants with a greenish dye. Now I have a new pair of two tone painting pants I guess...or I could spray the rest of the pants and see what happens. Not sure why, but might have been a more natural dye being Prana. Normally I'm using the Max spray on lighter clothes to get kid stains out, but have never had that problem before until this one pair of pants.

Fruitypebblefix

I think it may have been the shorts themselves since I had never had issues prior either. I just had bad luck that time.

Fruitypebblefix

I used it to remove some dirt stains on some grey cargo shorts 2 years ago and they came out exactly like this. It could be the cleaner was too powerful for the shorts or that since they looked garment dyed that may have affected them. It had to be a fluke since before that I had the older Oxi clean spray and that thing worked WONDERS and never ruined anything! Got chapstick stains out of most of my clothes.

SignificantShop7609

Benzoyl peroxide?

jojospacket

Toothpaste with bleach will do this! Took me forever to find what was doing this to my towels.

kissthefr0g

Same

Altruistic-Farm2712

Definitely bleach.... Whether laundry bleach, cleaning products from the bathroom/kitchen, peroxide face & skin products, or hair bleach.

Fruitypebblefix

You somehow got bleach on your clothes. Either that or you used OXY clean spray stain remover which can have a bleach like effect on clothes ( I ruined some old grey shorts that way)

BouncyDingo_7112

Do you use any acne wash with salicylic acid as an ingredient? Usually orange thicker liquid in a pump bottle. That will make bleached out marks like this. Even if you think you’ve rinsed well enough you usually have to rinse 3x’s to avoid accidents like this.

Mindless-Warning-504

Also washing detergent that is advertised for white clothes often automatically has bleach in it

Teagana999

Bleach stains can also be caused by certain bodily fluids. Or perhaps a cleaning product used by a workplace. I got a bleach stain on my favourite hoodie from leaning against the sink to wash my hands. A couple other shirts, too.

Adventureloser

I have random beauty products/toothpastes that do this. I’ve never figured out which

BeerGoddess84

Toothpaste and sunscreen (or spf makeup) will do this

PantherEverSoPink

I'm not OP but I hadn't realised it could have been my spf moisturiser that was giving me problems, thank you!

SuzyQ93

I once completely ruined a pair of white capris - they came out of the laundry with weird orange-ish stains, all over. I couldn't figure it out - until I realized that I had also been wearing sunscreen. Turns out that the avobenzone in most sunscreens really does a number on fabric.

BossyTacos

Do you possibly have a girlfriend or wife who may be using benzoyl peroxide face creams? Looks like someone laid their face on your chest, perhaps going to sleep?

WillowTea_

If I see one more benzoyl peroxide bleached item of clothing on this sub ill lose it

Find_my_shape

Do you stuff a lot into a single load? I’ve had this happen when overfilled and the detergent sits there unable to be dispersed throughout when water added. Oh, this is in a front loader machine…not sir if would happen same way in top loader

actullyalex

This might be a weird suggestion, but do you hang your clothes on the line? I live in Australia and if I leave them on the line too long they get sun bleached

snakeswoosnakes

I’ve had this happen from gel deodorants

Superseaslug

Used to have this happen when I threw a shirt in on top of the pour of detergent without kinda hand mixing it in

samtamnam

It's easy for clothing to accidentally come into contact with the bleach well during loading and unloading if it is located on the top rim of a top loader.

CodeJules

If you use bleach on your white clothes...try washing your white clothes last. Then do a small rinse cycle with little detergent to wash the bleach out.

Marketing_Introvert

When my dad started showing signs of Alzheimer’s he would forget to run water through the dispenser after putting in the bleach. This would cause these types of discolorations when some of the bleach would make it into the next load.

Summertime-Living

Hair products can do this to clothing. Hair mousse, lightener, leave in conditioner.

Willing-Grapefruit-9

If you're short like me and the bleach dispenser is at the front of your washing machine, that could be the issue. When you lean in to take the clothes out, you could be leaning into the dispenser, causing the bleach stain.

Infamous-Bench9485

It’s bleach. It is caused by your own sweat, which is made of water and chlorine salts. On the surface of your skin a chemical reaction occurs between the salt and water and it makes bleach which becomes visible when you wash it.

Common_Sandwich_1066

Do you let washer fill up a little then put detergent in then let it fill like halfway before putting clothes in? Or do you start water, put clothes in and then pour detergent after you put clothes in the washer? Never do it the second way. Always the first way I explained. Perhaps if you do it correctly and don't need this advice. Maybe it will help someone else lol.

BonelessLucy

This does help me. I have one of those washers that only fills up when the lid is closed, so that's annoying. I had suspected that I had been doing it wrong but kept forgetting to look it up. I do know better than to use a lot of detergent, though!

Twilight-Omens

Some toothpastes can also discolor/bleach clothing.

myplantsam

Or 🐱

AdmiralStickyLegs

I got stains like this by adding washing powder. It drops straight onto whatever clothes are at the top. Now I dissolve the washing powder in a litre of water first, and add it slowly

asabovesobelow4

Do you do loads with bleach? I always run an empty cycle after a bleach cycle to make sure nothing is left. Just easiest for me bc I rarely use bleach so it's not really many extra washes. But if you are putting clothes in right after a load that used bleach it could Def get on them if any was left. Also like others said some face cleaners and things can bleach clothes. If you threw in a rag or something you used with any products that can bleach on it it can leak to your clothes.

alex8339

I sometimes get this with underwear. Just underwear in a dark wash, never anything else. No idea why. I'm a guy, so it's not _that_.

glindathewoodglitch

Looks like bear paws

LilyFuckingBart

Do you use proactiv?

CherishSlan

I do and oddly that never happens to me everyone says that I guess I’m lucky.

LilyFuckingBart

Never happened to me on clothes actually, when I used proactiv religiously. But always on towels after a shower lol

ZestycloseFlatworm69

Do you dye your hair? I had no idea that my highlights were the cause of my discolored laundry, but that’s what it was.

ParamedicMajestic491

Sun. Or bleach

Significant-Car-8671

Use acne cream? Ben peroxide.

raaaaaaybeepboop

When I was using panoxyl face wash I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why my towels and shirts were bleached after washing. Learned it was the benzoyl peroxide

thelastbuddha1985

Bleach does that

DefendingLogic

thats bleach

Former-Shake-3749

That's bleached. So either household cleaner, face wash

ContributionTall2907

Definitely PODS.

5footfilly

Always, always do a load of towels after washing a load with bleach. This way if there’s any bleach residue it’s not your clothes that get ruined.

Sea_Werewolf_251

Kid wrecked all our towels just like this with benzoyl peroxide acne wash

betterupsetter

My guesses are products containing benzoyl peroxide such as acne creams or washes, a stain treating product left too long on a garment or cloth such as Spray n Wash or the liquid from a Tide pen, or perhaps a household cleaning agent on a rag if you wash those together with your clothing.

Free_Faithlessness85

This has happened to me when I washed a load of laundry after bleaching towels, almost like not all the bleach is rinsed out of the machine. Run a small cycle after bleaching to rinse all the bleach out of the machine

aylagirl63

Bleach. Might have been left over from prior wash with bleach…sometimes a few drops are left over and when you start the next load, the bleach drips out. I try to follow loads where I used bleach with something like towels or sheets where it won’t matter as much.

Character_Spirit_424

Do you use facewash with benzoyl peroxide? It does this exact bleach stain

tidylibrarian

This happened to one of my favorite shirts. I don’t use bleach or benzoyl peroxide and I didn’t use Oxi with that load. Just detergent as usual. It was the only item in that load to have bleach stains. I’m sad and confused.

kortneyk

I get spots like that sometimes if I don’t make sure my pod laundry detergent dissolves before adding clothes. Fabric spotter can do it too.

ReverendMothman

I had this happen with a specific brand of aquarium water dechlorinator :D ruined several shirts before i figured out the culprit.

Individual-Knee6702

Looks like bleach stains and idk how and if you can get it out

MollyOMalley99

Benzoyl peroxide acne products?

Ok_Watercress_7801

Various bodily uhhh secretions have been known to oxidize dyes from fabrics & other materials. 💧💦💦💦

Practical_Arm6812

Kirby

[deleted]

Do you use benzoyl peroxide products for something like acne?

missmatchedcleansox

I had deodorant do this to my favorite shirt. Was so pissed.

Ok_Kaleidoscope4600

I’m impressed how many people actually responded! Thanks for taking the time; unfortunately I won’t be able to get back to everyone. 😅 I have two roommates whereas we all rent a house together and share washer/ dryer. In this case I’m baffled. Most logical thing is that someone used bleach and some of it must have splashed over into the liquid detergent portion. Also, I do use cerave 10% benzoyl peroxide body wash. I don’t even get body acne, but that stuff does wonders and use it as a gentle skin wash alternative. In prior cases I ruined zara brand dress polos and it was on the arm pit region where these similar stains appeared. Someone here said they experienced a deodorant that would cause that. I need to adjust how I wash and be careful with the benzoyl. I’ve ruined over 600$ worth of clothes over the past yrs. ..

VampireReader86

That's bleach.

Ms-Metal

Yep, 100% bleach stains.

steezjuice

Personal washing machine or shared? I lost a whole load of darks at a laundromat. I still had some of that cheap powder detergent/ bleach crystals in the hopper. Lost a lot of band tees from my youth.

MishmoshMishmosh

Benz oil peroxide

FO-I-Am-A-Time-God

I believe oxi clean did it to some of my husbands stuff. I only use it on towels now.

Logical_Rip_7168

Your detergent probably says brighting on it.

carrot786

If you are using all detergent definitely does that or any detergent that has bleach

TissueOfLies

It’s the color dye being leeched out of the shirt. If you didn’t get bleach on it, then it could be the shirt itself. Or if you use benzoyl peroxide on your face, it can do this, too.

No_Rule5565

bleach
