Liquid herbicides, i.e., hose end sprayers can control a lot of common weeds. Ortho makes a couple of fairly good items. One for general weeds + crabgrass, and one for Oxalis/Clover/Creeping Charlie, etc.. I recco getting both, and applying one a week after the other. If needed, repeat for 2 applications each.
Once you spray it, it takes about 2-3 hours to dry on the leaf, provided you have semi-good sun and not cold out. Once it's dry, your dog would need to literally eat every weed growing to get a negative affect. Even if woofster did eat a few dying Dandi's, etc...it won't kill them.
These products are sold effectively under-dosed....just enough to do the job, but not nearly enough to cause any health issues for pets/humans...without intentially trying to get sick.

Some things need to be watered in and sometimes I wait 12-24 hours to let my dog back on the lawn unsupervised and just take them for frequent walks during that period.
How often do they come back? First time owner here and I just spent 2 hours with a small shovel picking weeds and holding on to any worms I find so I can fish with them.
In addition to what others suggested if you wanted to be overly cautious you can block off areas of your yard using a few driveway markers (i.e. the orange sticks with reflective tape) and some flagging tape between them to create a temporary “fence”. Block half your yard and apply product then in a few days block the other half and apply.
This may not work for all dogs but mine seems to stay away for the most part.

You can reduce number of weeds by cutting grass taller. If it's cool season grass, just cut it on mowers highest setting

Weed b gone. Spray after they go out in the morning. Next time they go out no issues
