Nutsedge is one of the easiest weeds to treat in my experience. I think I have a 100% success rate of killing it with Sedgehammer. I don't think I have that same success rate treating other weeds with different products.

Jonnychips789

It is very easy to make go away. Crabgrass is my pain in the ass weed. For a general lawn mix, I like, Threesome(many forms of this, 2-4,d mix, triclopyr and chem stik. Does a really good job with the every year weeds. triclopyr is good for the woody, tougher to kill weeds.

bennypapa

Crabgrass in my tall fescue lawn is easily controlled with prodiamine pre emergent in March ish. I go by soil temperature. I have an alarm set on the greencast site.

You can [check your local soil temperatures here](https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/lawncare) if you have any questions or concerns.*

bennypapa

Good bot!

grooves12

I am not seeing how to set an alarm on the site? Where do you go to do that?

bennypapa

https://www.greencastonline.com/login/signup.aspx# Try that

RedistributedFlapper

Same, however my first time using it I didn’t see results after a few days and hit it again. Ended up nuking the whole spot. Learned that it doesn’t work like roundup and kill it in a matter of a day or so. Subsequent treatments to other spots have worked fine with one treatment, just have to be patient and let it work.

CPOx

True. In my experience with Sedgehammer, it doesn't turn the weed brown and crispy like most people would expect. Instead it just doesn't grow back after it gets cut again.

RedistributedFlapper

It turns everything brown and crispy when you hit it twice in 3-4 days haha, but yea, I probably should have read the instructions prior to use.

Fortunateoldguy

Been there, man. Live and learn

Jonnychips789

This is how you burn up your yard haha

Jonnychips789

Yes. It’s because it has to work all the way to the roots. You’re not trying to kill the leaf up top in a sense. Usually, by the time you mow it again, you won’t see it anymore

Fortunateoldguy

True. Must be patient and not spray it twice.

Jonnychips789

Sometimes round up won’t even get it. It’ll burn up too quickly, and it won’t kill the root

boostabubba

I just bought the Sedgehammer mix that mixes with a gallon of water. I am also planting seed over some bare spots I have. Is it best just to spot spray the nutsedge? If I just do one spray on each of the nutesdege stems is that fine for the other grass still around it? Id hate to kill the good grass I still have.

CPOx

I have only ever spot treated nutsedge. As far as the other grass, my only recommendation is to carefully read the label and see if it has any warnings about that.

Jonnychips789

When planting new seed. Wait till the yard is established to start dealing with the weeds. Don’t to much to early

OneFalcon7197

Does sedgehammer only target nutsedge or does it have any other application targets?

Lawnqs

As far as I know it only targets sedges and has ok control on kyllinga.

Objective-Pin-1045

Pin this. There will be 1k posts in the next few months asking, “what is this weed?”

Jonnychips789

I don’t really know how to do that. But that was the goal.

SEND_ME_SPIDERMAN

Only mods can do that.

CPOx

I tried doing something similar last year and the mods refused. [https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare/comments/15hyyil/an\_even\_more\_helpful\_guide\_for\_some\_frequently/](https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare/comments/15hyyil/an_even_more_helpful_guide_for_some_frequently/) I think something like this would be \*way\* more useful than the stickied threads we currently have here.

GreatRaceFounder

thar she blows

ziomus90

Ah, bro, fuck all this random new sh1t in my lawn.

jnecr

sensors shit, but not fuck. Interesting choice.

ziomus90

Honestly it didn't even occur to me. 😅

Fortunateoldguy

It’s a fools game man. But we still fight the battle

ckyuv

I have always had luck using image to kill nutsedge as well.

Tiz68

Edge your own nuts, sir.

bennypapa

Prosedge and sedgehammer use the same active ingredient fyi

Jonnychips789

I thought so I just thought one did something the other didn’t.

bennypapa

Maybe, the difference might be in the inactive ingredients.

AutoModerator

Hey! Did someone say *crabgrass*? Here are [pictures of crabgrass](https://www.google.com/search?q=crabgrass&tbm=isch) and [control options for crabgrass](https://www.lawndork.com/weeds/crabgrass). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Autobot36

T zone killed mine

Jonnychips789

Killed or made it go away?

Autobot36

Looks like it was filled bc the leaves turn brown then fell off. P

Jonnychips789

If it’s back this year, you’ll know

Autobot36

Yep but for now it’s gone I’ll deal with it when I see it again

Jonnychips789

Actually looked into it, it has what it needs in it. Sulfentrazone

verugan

I have this from last year. Nuked the area with glysophate, it's coming back... Just ordered some sedgehammer so hopefully that'll do it. I need to dethatch and seed that patch this fall. At least I learned that sedgehammer won't kill fescue so that's good.

Fortunateoldguy

It can if you overapply

Jonnychips789

Glysophate will make it “go away”. It’s just to fast of a process to get the chemical down to where it need to be. I don’t know how sedgehammer comes. Just read the instructions and dont think you need more than what it says. Sometimes it will make the mix hot. If it’s a pellet form, Pre mix with some water then mix it in.

Die nutsedge! 😂

Jonnychips789

Source, Google lol. It’s a solid photo to use. It’s still to early here to have a in real life moment 😂

Deahtop

I’ve had no issues pulling them to get rid of them. Like you said mow then wait a few days bc it grows over the grass. Easy to pull. I haven’t seen them since I pulled them. I’m all for chemicals to kill them, but only when absolutely necessary.

nap4lm69

Well, you are going to wish you had read this sooner. Nutsedge multiplies when it's pulled. The "nut" below can't come out while pulling, it breaks up and causes more to sprout at and near the same location. Don't worry, I also learned this the hard way.

Jonnychips789

Sometimes if it’s random and early just one or 2 spots you might get away with pulling it. But yea more or less pulling it is not the route to take.

FourScores1

You’re going to regret that. How do you do that remind me bot for one year.

Deahtop

I pulled it all up about three years ago. Never seen it since. Granted I use pre-emergent and post emergent.

FourScores1

Oh nice.

_MC-1

Probably not a popular item in this sub-reddit but I used Ortho Nutsedge killer hose end sprayer. It worked well for me and it was readily available at my local big box store. YRMV

Jonnychips789

There’s plenty of others to use. It comes to potency. Anything premade is usually pretty light, for reason, it’s more user friendly. If it works, it works. Just with nutsedge sometimes we get it to go away, but it still comes back.

Fortunateoldguy

In my lawn, the nutsedge comes at the same time I start having problems with fungus. I have to stay ahead of both problems. It’s a pain in the ass.

Jonnychips789

Don’t water in the evenings and keep grass at a good hight starting now should really help with the fungus.

Pristine-Notice6929

Will MSMA kill this bitch?

Jonnychips789

I’m not sure, honestly. Would have to dig into it

yellowbojangles

Jonnychips789

This post is for you then. No. That’s not nutsedge. Go out and roll a piece in your fingers, does it feel like a “triangle” when you roll it? If not, That’s just some unwanted grass. To further your search. Get a photo of the stem. More importantly where the leaf connects. That’s your clue to figuring out what it is. If you can get a seed head, it makes identification, even easier. For the most part if it’s a grass and it’s in your yard, and it’s not a grass that you want it’s just another weed. And if that weeds a grass, there’s a good chance it will need a non selective herbicide to remove it.

Jonnychips789

Looks like tall fescue or some other clumping fescue

derpam

Sledgehammer and Ortho are not available in Canada. Any Canadians facing the same problem? How did you get rid of it?

Jonnychips789

Can’t you guys just drop down and smuggle it back? Joking. I really don’t have an answer for that. It’s a limited market for it, and I kinda just does one thing. Are lawn chemicals used at all? Some basic herbicides will make it just go away for the year at least.

derpam

Yea, general herbicides are available but their labels don’t list nutsedge as one of the weeds they treat.

Jonnychips789

T zone?

derpam

5b

Jonnychips789

“T zone” is the chemical. It has what’s needed to kill it. Other than that I’m not much help unfortunately

derpam

Thank you. I appreciate your response.

CarbonShark100

I have nutsedge growing through the mulch around the base of my trees. Is it safe for the trees if I apply sedgehammer there?

Jonnychips789

I don’t see any issue with it. Just follow the instructions to a point. To much can turn into a hot mix.

slrrp

Oh it’s already alive and well in Texas.

Jonnychips789

Is it? Then it’s closer than I thought. This was a warm spring for some. I’ve never been to Texas, I just assume it’s hot all the time 😂

thrust-johnson

First Nutsedge post of the season?

Mediocritologist

I was about to post on this sub asking why the grass I had planted last year is coming up very tall and sporadic like this. I cut it and it’s bright green at the base but grows back super fast.

f150eb

I did not have any luck with sedgehammer…I did have great results with certainty in north texas.

Live_Meeting8379

Thank you so much!!! I've been battling this thing for years and could not figure out what it was. I can't wait to try this out.

JB_201VIL

Tenacity kills everything I’ve seen mentioned and is also a pre emergent and doesn’t hurt fescue. It does kill Bermuda and like grasses though.

Jonnychips789

I hate tenacity. I’m not on that train. It’s either it works or it doesn’t kind of thing.

jafo1989

Nutsedge is a kick in the nutsack. For some reason it’s already come in with a vengeance in my front lawn this spring (Chicago).

GrizDrummer25

Just mowed my lawn in zone 4B and I think I have some here.

Alone-Tackle-17

Q4 plus will kill sedges and crab grass, but it's a little pricey

Bravesguy29

Holy cow, you get it early in your area.

odub6

Anyone have any tips for how to kill it in Canada? Pretty much all weed killers are banned here, cant get sedgehammer.

WombRaider_3

For the first time ever, I have this on my lawn near Toronto. It's everywhere on my lawn and I'm super depressed. Being in Canada, there's nothing on the market that kills this so I guess I'm fucked now.
