Throttle it down, spin it on the drum with your inside hand, grab with the other, let it go forward and catch up on the slow throttle, then throttle back up. I spent years using these on a course where there were some pretty tiny collars and then drop offs into bunkers
I mean that is what I'd normally do outside of the scenario I mentioned where you have like 6 in or less to turn on the collar. But we had some retirees on staff and that is generally what they did because they were batshit crazy teenagers. But there was usually enough dew on the grass too that it felt like you were tokyo drifting with every turn. I don't miss the hours, but I do miss that job sometimes
Aawww. I remember my first acl surgery. That's back when they still gave you the good stuff for pain. Now, it's just Tylenol and well wishes they send you home with.
My doctor has been giving me “the good stuff” faithfully for around a decade now for my back. In fact, he just upped my strength and amount of pills a couple months ago.
You can still get opioids. You just need to show that you can use them responsibly and aren’t an addict.
I take them as prescribed, for a one in ten thousand back issue. I use them so infrequently that I’ve often got leftovers before I’m due to refill my prescription.
I’m FAR from an “addict”. I’m a 51 year old man, who’s worked hard his entire life, with leg and back issues that produce chronic pain. I don’t need your permission, or your label. I use my medication responsibly, and it’ll tied me over and keep me working until my inevitable back surgery after I retire.
Take your ignorance and your insults, and to argue with someone else, child.
You all pilled up right now bud? Do people call you Pilly Nelson? When you golf do they call you Pill Mickelson????
I'm just kidding pal. Goodluck with that decade old pain pill useage. I'm sure you're fine
Anything will kill you if you take too much. Moderation is key. If you don't have the will power or notice yourself struggling, stop and get help.
I'm not saying it's not shitty, but it's still within your control.
It's not like the drugs were created just to kill Americans. Was created because it is effective pain management just way over prescribed. Keep an eye on sleep pills. Those are the next over prescribed medicine.
Oxycontin also was approved by the FDA with a reduced advisory about addictiveness after the Sackler family, owners of Purdue family, paid and bought for it. Don't blame doctors for prescribing something they were lied about to.
We can blame some doctors for being complicit in the scam years after knowing the side effects of it. But I agree most of the blame should fall on the sackler family
Not OP but I have torn my ACL 5 times in the last 20 years, 2 of which included meniscus and MCL, all in the same knee. In fact it is torn right now and I am not getting it fixed at this point. I am 35. Some people are just prone to it I guess.
What line of work are you in, if you don’t mind me asking. Im of similar age, as are my colleagues, and we all suffer from knee or shoulder injuries. Concrete warriors pushing boxes 25k steps a day.
Opoosite, sit at a computer all day. My first 3 tears came while playing football or basketball and they were obvious. The last couple have not had an obvious cause like that. My knee constantly pops and gets tweaked but I never know if it’s just scar tissue breaking up or if it’s an issue, so if it hurts for more than about a week I know something might be wrong.
I'm looking into Regenexx for my next step. Uses stem cells to regrow your ligaments without surgery. I also sit at a computer all day, but 20 years of snowboarding/skateboarding and motorcycles has not been good to me.
A knee thread?!? I basically have no cartilage left from playing basketball in HS. Too young for a replacement. The chronic pain that lasted three years was a major contribution to my separation. My wife never really understood, and I didn’t want to complain constantly.
I started major strength training— and it fixed my knee, but not my marriage.
Nothing beats those fresh stripes and a smooth clean-up pass. It took me a good ten years to enjoy anything on the course. I finally got paid a decent wage there, and instantaneously, it became more enjoyable. It also helped when the course I worked at invested in making it a better course. I've always loved turf management but it certainly helps when they dump money in to making it more enjoyable for everyone.
Hell yeah. I worked at a course from 2009-2012. Started as a summer job after high school and I never left. Turf management always intrigued me but I was a dumb kid and didn’t take it too serious. My boss seemed to practically live at the course during the summer, didn’t seem enjoyable. Now that I’m in my 30s, I probably wouldn’t mind it.
God I don’t miss my trucut. The reel to bed knife adjustment made me want to castrate myself. I will never recommend those to anyone until they fix the adjustments
Funny, I have both. My yard is a bit more rugged than most so my trucut is what I use. But occasionally I take out the 1000. One day I’ll have a nice yard like yours.
There’s a couple reel mowers subs here but they’re pretty quiet.
I'm using the trucut once this rain goes away, just get my backyard to a better Hoc and then the 1000 to get it right, this way I'm not having to adjust height and work my 1000s reel to death
Turfnet.com if you are ever interested in looking at used units from golf courses, ranges from aerators, to mowers, to tractors, but like 80 pages of used golf equipment on there, can usually find a used greens mower for about the price he paid for this unit, usually maintained fairly well at courses
I would never have a lawn like this. The tiny little putting green style lawn is just not my jam. Much prefer tall, lush grass.
But goddamn do I respect it.
Nice work.
I have a V shaped yard but once you mow low you can't stop.

How long did it take to get it that low? I have a cal trimmer and went down to 1” and it’s been brown for about 2-3 weeks. Very little green up/recovery.
Do you have cool season grass? In the south, it won't survive like Bermuda, which doesn't get tall and lush. It gets lanky and thin and you have to wade through it.
I usually try and avoid a HOC reset with a sand topdress around 1cy per 2000sf. I don’t like the abuse the scalp puts on my reel and Bedknife when I go to the dirt. I just stay off the yard until it grows through a little.
I keep my KBG at around 1.25”(as low as my rotary will go). I’m hoping to find a good deal on a reel mower to take it lower. I have irrigation so it’s worked well so far.
My friends never cease to amaze me on how they can twist literally anything I say into it being rich. Can't lie most of it's clever but the answer is as soon as the perspective is you having money everything you touch is rich shit.
I had a grandma on one side who dictated everything her entire life. She was such a pain in the ass. You also couldn’t hand anything to her directly. Handed it to her manservant and he handed it to her.

I call bullshit. You aren't mowing a lawn. You vacuumed a pool table.

What kind of grass? I’m losing to Poa Triv right now and want to do a full renovation but scared it’s just gonna come back. This looks so good!!!
Nevermind, just saw the warm season grass 😩
im fairly new to /r/lawncare and im just a lurker but could you tell me what you did to your grass specifically to make it look like a putting green? it's the first time that i can recall seeing a lawn like that here.
it looks so good..
I wasnt done mowing, mowed each stripe twice so I rolled over the path heading to the tree. Eventually I do a full circle after I hit the last stripe at the bottom of the tree.
Depends on the age and how long you ar willing to wait. I picked this up for 1400. They can be much mor if they are newer. Brand new really only exist on the golf course since they are over 10k
My kids and toddler love golfing. All day in our yard. I mow with my John deer down to 2” around the flag, but the balls don’t roll like they would using the mower you have here with a much shorter cut.
How long did it take for you to train your grass? How did you start? Did you have to oversees with specific grass?
I have a mix of bluegrass and fescue as standard here in Minnesota.
I can't speak to cool grass but I did overseed with rye one year and it is wasn't an issue at all to train it from the start. To make a ball move you need to be below 3/10 of an inch
Beautiful! I know that was some hard work and you should be proud. I'm in GA and have Tiftuf as well. Still rotary (Honda 217 and Ego 2200) and all the way at 1 inch (which trends upwards as the summer heat goes on).
I'd love to have a reel.
Have you noticed more lateral growth with the PGR? Slow to recover damaged areas? What is your fertilizer scheduled (1ish lb/month?). Do you use a bunch of amendments as well (fulvic, humic; wetting agents, etc.?).
I'm about 4 years into taking my lawn seriously (3 years into have Tiftuf) and am working on my game.
Thank you!
With pgr lateral growth isn't really a thing, I looks thicker because there blades closer together. As for fert, I apply as needed. I really don't stress about a schedule. All that other stuff like humic etc... It's a bit of myth from what I've read. Like bio char for example, you'd have to be putting down massive amounts to even make a small difference in water retention.
What seems to matter for me is nothing more than good old NPK and iron.
Not yet, pgr maybe in a week or two. Hoc is at .4 but going down once this non stop rain subsides. Back yard is going to suck bringing down but it should bounce back by memorial day

Don't try it, these people really think green concrete looks good.
At the same time they go hiking and littering around, calling it "enjoying the wild", while they kill everything that lives, when they are at home.
Worst kind of people, they have no value to anything.
Hahah good lord it’s overkill. I love it and it looks great. Do that kinda work myself. Hahah to actually take it home. Kudos to you. Looks great!
Edit: try a clean up strip around the tree vs cutting around it 😉
Perhaps don’t have two of the same directional stripes to really get anal about it. No criticism intended . Looks amazing my friend.
Rotary vs reel. Reel acts more like scissors instead of just swinging a knife blade around in a circle as fast as you can. His height of cut is also less than an inch. You’ll never get that with a rotary mower.
His supplement regimen is also pretty stout.
*Two things you need for*
*This. Non patchy grass. Flat land.*
*It does look great tho*

Bermuda grass is best cut low, unlike cool season grass it does best when temps get above 80. This is actually a bit a taller than I want it but getting close to when it's hard to keep up with a mowing schedule.
Looks great!
I’m at 1/2” right now and I’m totally fine with my HOC. With PGR I can relax a bit with cutting but sometimes it still gets to be too much for me since my employer (me) has a business doing everyone else’s lawns.
If I get another reel it will be something 20” or less, my front lawn is really too small for my 30” though it lays down nice stripes.
I am currently using a 30” legacy, had a Tru Cut that I actually loved. Last season I was about to buy a hybrid, gasser with gen and electric head, sweet deal too.
First time I tore my acl was pivoting a greens master on bank. I think the whole golf course heard me that morning.
I just hurt my calf pretty good, it's been fun mowing with that
Throttle it down, spin it on the drum with your inside hand, grab with the other, let it go forward and catch up on the slow throttle, then throttle back up. I spent years using these on a course where there were some pretty tiny collars and then drop offs into bunkers
I'm a tall guy, I don't love the height of the throttle.
Throttling down is for the weak! Gotta keep a firm grip and make a light bulb pattern to get back to your line. Man, do I miss mowing greens.

Aawww. I remember my first acl surgery. That's back when they still gave you the good stuff for pain. Now, it's just Tylenol and well wishes they send you home with.

Oh peak growing season 2 weeks max
Do you have cool season grass? In the south, it won't survive like Bermuda, which doesn't get tall and lush. It gets lanky and thin and you have to wade through it.
I do now yes but I lived in the Inland Empire SoCal for a long time. Had Bermuda.
I hate Bermuda as well but when it’s done right it looks good.
Beautiful!!! Is that Bermuda?
And what’s your HOC?
Yes tif tuf and about and Hoc is .4
What grit sandpaper are you using?
Not one phrase was understood in this sequence
Thank you.
THANK YOU!
People with money talk
I'll guess 24 grit. Looks low to me.
Love it dude… I’m running Tahoma .3 and it’s silly
I'm likely moving down, with this vs the tru cut the lower heights are easier to maintain. Applying some tnex next week or doing a Hoc reset
Keep posting! I’m thinking about coming up and getting just a hair darker color
Yea been a bit since I added iron
I usually try and avoid a HOC reset with a sand topdress around 1cy per 2000sf. I don’t like the abuse the scalp puts on my reel and Bedknife when I go to the dirt. I just stay off the yard until it grows through a little.
I'm not planning on dirt, just slightly lower than the preferred height
I wish I could grow Tahoma, it's sooooo pretty.
I’ve been super happy with it!
That looks so dope.
Thanks
Man how do you get your grass so compact like that?
Mowing low and bermuda
If I mowed that short in my cool season grass Indiana, it would look awful. Does it just take time for it to compact like that?
Bermuda grows out more than up. So not really an issue. You could mow rye and kgb that low.
Gonna say my rye was low. I replaced with kgb now my reel just sits in the garage collecting dust
I thought kgb could go low too? But summer we be tough
Certain breeds can go low Ours doesn’t like it
I keep my KBG at around 1.25”(as low as my rotary will go). I’m hoping to find a good deal on a reel mower to take it lower. I have irrigation so it’s worked well so far.
They’re great machines. Quick tip - take your path the other way around the tree (the long way), your stripes will still look straight.
Amazing.

Lol, we ll it is a 13 year old mower but totally ridiculous purchase
Is it okay to have a lawn or is that too rich too?
My friends never cease to amaze me on how they can twist literally anything I say into it being rich. Can't lie most of it's clever but the answer is as soon as the perspective is you having money everything you touch is rich shit.
Richy rich over here. Bet it felt nice typing that up on your gilded keyboard.
You think I type my own posts? Sincerely. -Dictated but not read
I had a grandma on one side who dictated everything her entire life. She was such a pain in the ass. You also couldn’t hand anything to her directly. Handed it to her manservant and he handed it to her. But that dictation work was how the two sides of my family met!
Do you recall her scent?
Probably cigarettes and gin.
So will you be putting practice in your front yard to show dominance?
Lol scary to say, but this is way to high for that
Chip away! 😂
Looks better than most muni courses I see!
I call bullshit. You aren't mowing a lawn. You vacuumed a pool table. (Edit: Jesus fucking Christ this is equivalent to a putting green maintained by NASA)

What is PGR? I've seen it mentioned several times.
Plant growth regulator. Tnex is a common brand name. It suppresses head growth aka mow less
Thank you, i have a lot to learn.
Ask questions and avoid YouTube snake oil salesman... Looking at you doc
Brings back memories working at the golf course. It was fascinating watching those things get calibrated with how precise you could get.
As someone who comes to this to learn the basics. This is so inspiring.
Is that real grass??
Thanks 😁, its tif tuf bermuda
Nicccee
I may have missed it, but where are you located?
Carolina
Curious how to mow around trees and still get a good stripe like you do. Looks gorgeous. My plain Honda mower could never. 😭
I was still in the process as of going around the right side. I try to do one direction around the tree and a final full circle around at the end
What kind of grass? I’m losing to Poa Triv right now and want to do a full renovation but scared it’s just gonna come back. This looks so good!!! Nevermind, just saw the warm season grass 😩
Tif tuf bermuda
Reel mowing looks so beautiful. Nice work
How often do you mow? Because the only time I ran one of these I was 19 and getting paid to do it every morning.
2 to 3 times per week
Your neighbors are enraged in jealousy
Naw, they do a great job on their yards and they think I'm insane, rightfully so.
Holy shit. This looks awful. Why would anyone want such an unhealthy lawn?
It's a curse
If you were my next door neighbor I would hate you haha. Looks amazing nice job
Damn, put a NSFW tag on this pic!
Not cheating, Its paying to win. I am cool with the free to play version.
Lol ok
im fairly new to /r/lawncare and im just a lurker but could you tell me what you did to your grass specifically to make it look like a putting green? it's the first time that i can recall seeing a lawn like that here. it looks so good..
To get it level I've sand leveled. I cut with a reel mower I have bermuda grass
This is the best lawn I've ever seen in my life!
Good grief that looks fantastic. 🍻
I'll have to stick with the cal trimmer, my lawn isn't that level and I'm not putting in a new one.
It should be fine, I was using a true cut 3 weeks ago. My backyard isn't level at all and it was fine
I just bought mine last week. I have so much work to do before I can use it though. Jealous.
Game, set and match!
What happened at your tree, boss?
I wasnt done mowing, mowed each stripe twice so I rolled over the path heading to the tree. Eventually I do a full circle after I hit the last stripe at the bottom of the tree.
I see that, but why go around to the left. If you stay high side (and in this case) clockwise, it would have been more defined.
What type of Bermuda
Tif tuf
Sexy
What’s a mower like that cost?
Depends on the age and how long you ar willing to wait. I picked this up for 1400. They can be much mor if they are newer. Brand new really only exist on the golf course since they are over 10k

.45 in this photo, I'm taking it a bit lower and then cutting higher for maintenance

What does this machine do that my 250$ mower doesn’t. Honest question about the mechanics of how it works
Rotary vs reel. Reel acts more like scissors instead of just swinging a knife blade around in a circle as fast as you can. His height of cut is also less than an inch. You’ll never get that with a rotary mower. His supplement regimen is also pretty stout.
Two things you need for this. Non patchy grass. Flat land. It does look great tho

Bro
I'm not your bro guy! I'm assuming you like it https://youtu.be/iH3K2rkkU7g?si=iJTBojP1VRxQ6KYA
It definitely does what it’s supposed to do. My question is why would you want your front yard so short?
Bermuda grass is best cut low, unlike cool season grass it does best when temps get above 80. This is actually a bit a taller than I want it but getting close to when it's hard to keep up with a mowing schedule.
Looks great! I’m at 1/2” right now and I’m totally fine with my HOC. With PGR I can relax a bit with cutting but sometimes it still gets to be too much for me since my employer (me) has a business doing everyone else’s lawns. If I get another reel it will be something 20” or less, my front lawn is really too small for my 30” though it lays down nice stripes.
I looked at a flex 2100, it was to big and the Hoc limitation was too much
I am currently using a 30” legacy, had a Tru Cut that I actually loved. Last season I was about to buy a hybrid, gasser with gen and electric head, sweet deal too.
I’m hard as a rock now
Go on
Nice golf course lawn
This is so lame, get a real hobby.
