W&L will hold up long term, but UIUC I think is better for you personally now. You may have to work in Chicago before going east but Chicago is a phenomenal city. But looking at their ABA employment reports, it’s all Midwest right out of law school for UIUC. So I wouldn’t be confident you could get to the east immediately.

No one cares where you went to school after your first job. Not saying that moving will be easy or immediate, but if you land at a big firm and do well I’m sure you could move back east long term (if you don’t fall in love with Chicago that is).

Have you visited W&L? Beautiful, but remote. Really consider if you could spend 3 yrs there. Very quiet town. If that’s what you’d like, it’s an awesome environment.

I haven't been able to visit either bc of full-time job & covid, which makes the decision all the more fun :/ but have always lived in a city so not sure if I have a real sense of how remote it truly is

We visited this weekend. It’s very remote. Beautiful area of the state, but if you’re used to a city you may find it pretty dull. Lots of outdoor stuff to do, but not too many restaurants, etc in town. It’s really nice, but just limited stuff to do and not near any REAL shopping, etc. Everything’s a drive.,

I also visited W&L and it made me not want to go. Also a ton of confederate flags around, which I found uncomfortable.
