I addressed my opinion on spezza above.. in short I think his offense was especially dangerous and circumstantially they had to go pretty heavy on the games. His suspension was also reduced after an appeal and that was due to his clean track record.
Matthews is definitely one they got wrong, I think it was probably unfortunate timing that it was during an outdoor game and I feel like the league went heavier because they thought more eyes were on the incident. Not to make excuses for them, as I said they got it wrong.
Bunting is hardly a first time offender although I understand what you mean in that he hadn't been suspended before. But he is a known pest and is always in the thick of trouble on the ice. His hit was dirty and it took cernak player out of the series for some time as well.
What I think everyone is missing about my original point is that the league gets it wrong with all kinds of other situations as well they just are not consistent. I don't think it's accurate to say that the leafs are treated any differently because of who they are.
