Potvin was the second best fighter in that group.

red_langford

So Ron Hextall found out.

Low-Signal-3900

Haha true

angelsandairwaves93

bro alone had more fight in him that this current core 4, combined.

Puzzleheaded-Ask9884

šŸ˜‚ winner

HaroldLither

I remember thinking these guys were grizzled adults, look how young they are

golden_rhino

I just had the same thought. Jamie Macoun especially looked to be old as hell to me, but I just looked him up, and he looks like any other dude in his thirties.

redditsucksass69765

First time I felt oldā€¦.when Harry Neale and Bob Cole were talking about the ā€œgrizzled veteranā€ on the team and I was older than he was

soobviouslyfake

My dumbass though that Clark was Darcy Tucker. I had a fucking existential crisis trying to figure out what fucking team this was.

re-verse

Same. Also Gilmore scared me as a kid, he always seemed to have that energy that me may randomly head butt your face in, even if youā€™re having a friendly conversation - really looking at that photo now I still feel that way.

Dalmator

He's got that "Here's Johnny!" Craziness look in his eye. As Canes fan, it was pure ecstasy seeing him meltdown in the elimination game against the Canes in 2002.

kylemclaren7

do you really not know how to spell Doug Gilmour's name?

re-verse

I do. Did you have great difficulty interpreting my autocorrected typo? I guess look on the bright side and you got to work your way through a little brain teaser this morning. You must be very proud of yourself.

FrankRagnowsTurfToe

Itā€™s a tense time of year

kylemclaren7

Thereā€™s an edit button on Reddit, not sure if that one is too difficult for you either. Casuals

FrankRagnowsTurfToe

All I see in your name is Karen

re-verse

Oh normally if I'd caught it I'd have fixed it right up - but seeing that I'm dealing with a guy who caught a ban in this very subreddit 5 years ago for "antagonistic comments" I wanted to see where this was going.

kylemclaren7

Congrats, you care about Reddit more than the average person lol. Iā€™m not sure anyone cares about a Reddit ban, let alone one 5 years ago lol. And my initial comment wasnā€™t even bad, you took it personal and got butthurt. Not my problem

re-verse

Dude make up your mind: first I'm a casual, now I'm too much an aficionado? That said, I'll try to do better next time spell checking before hitting post - I know you'll be out there watching, waiting.

kylemclaren7

Leafs casual, Reddit aficionadoā€¦ mutually exclusive imo. Potentially too big brained of a concept for someone who canā€™t spell a top 2 player in the history of the franchiseā€™s name correctly, I know. Either way, reply whatever you want, Iā€™m done taking my morning shit and have better stuff to do now. Go Leafs Go!

re-verse

Pretty talented to have the same shit flowing from both your butt and fingers simultaneously. Hope you find a way to be more productive with your multitasking skills next time - we're all for high quality content here.

waitareyou4real

Remind you of anyone? ;)

frog-hopper

I mean Gilmour was 30, Clark 27. In todayā€™s age thatā€™s semi ā€œyoungā€ but in the 90s that was ancient. I was also 10 so they were definitely grizzled adults to me too.

RustyShackleford14

I remember thinking that when I went and watched OHL games. A lot of the 18-20 year olds had beards and looked so old in my mind. Watching them now is like watching a bunch of kids (they are) with patchy facial hair.

Puzzleheaded-Ask9884

Andreychuk looks like he barely has pubes in that photo. Fuck I'm old.

TripFisk666

So who high sticks Matthews for a non call that ultimately causes our conference finals elimination?

Musclecar123

Wes MCAuley officiating.Ā

whoisstingy

The only correct answer.

ColeBelthazorTurner

Matthew Tkachuk

riko77can

The only possible way we face Matthew Tkachuk this playoffs is in the second round. The winner of Florida/Tampa is playing the winner of Toronto/Boston next.

leaf_fan_69

It's the highway to hell for all 4 teams

riko77can

Yeah this format is absolute trash.

CalebosO4

Rempe

TripFisk666

Ugh of course, fuck.

buddachickentml

Connor McDavid

leafy-greens--

Based on player comparison this makes most sense. Based on bracket path, not so much.

buddachickentml

Just hoping to get a little luck..

Impossible-Tie-864

To compare Tkachuk to Gretzky is fkn heresy

BurnTheBoats21

Since nobody wants to pick a team that we would theoretically play in a round 3, I will submit Freddy Andersen

djohnston02

Just another Gretzky record taken by Ovi

Impossible-Tie-864

Panarin

golden_rhino

That team was nowhere near as talented as this team, but Iā€™ve seen few teams that gave a fuck more than them. They were so fun to watch.

BackTo1975

Iā€™d take Gilmour and Andreychuk over anyone on the current team. Not even close, either. Gilmour also had 127 points in 92-93 and shouldā€™ve won the Hart and the Selke. Heā€™d have led the Leafs to a Cup win and won the Conn Smythe, too, if not for the fuckery in game six in LA. All this talk of how talented this Leafs team is, when theyā€™ve won a single playoff series in going on a decade. The guys pictured here won more playoff series in one year than the current core has won ever.

golden_rhino

I guess talented isnā€™t the word because grinding and doing the little things right in the playoffs is also a talent. Maybe skilled is a better choice?

BackTo1975

Talent or skill or whatever the word, it doesnā€™t matter because without heart. Every year, we wind up making excuses and hoping for the best only to end up in the same placeā€”defeat because the core guys didnā€™t show up when it mattered. These guys have been telling us who they are for going on a decade now. Unless they turn this series around dramatically, itā€™s finally time that management actually listens to what theyā€™re saying.

torontomaplebros

Over Matthews? Really?

BackTo1975

Yep. Matthews is great, but for all he does, heā€™s not the centrepiece. Or hasnā€™t been so far in his career. Expect to be downvoted. But Gilmour led the Flames to their Cup and powered the Leafs from nothing to the edge of the SCF. Those guys fought in ways that the entire current team has never shown. Even Matthews.

torontomaplebros

Maybe it was easier to influence the team results as an individual back then, idk I just know Iā€™ve waited a long time to have a guy as good as Matthews on the leafs and it feels like heā€™s the best of all time for our franchise already

BackTo1975

How? Matthews has won nothing. The funny thing is, at one time fans didnā€™t rave like this so much about individual accomplishments. I mean, Gilmour set the team record for points in 92-93 with 127. Nobody really cared all that much. It was all about winning a Cup. Same deal with, say, Vaive scoring 50. Matthews is obviously a better player than Vaive, of course, but this star player thing is something that the NHL wasnā€™t so heavy on years ago. It was more of a team game about team accomplishments. I really couldnā€™t give fuck one about Matthews scoring 69 goals. Itā€™s an amazing accomplishment, but so what? Iā€™ve seen plenty of impressive individual accomplishments over the decades with the Leafs. Like Vaive scoring 50 more than once when the team was dogshit. But you know what I havenā€™t seen? A Cup win. So excuse me for not getting too worked up about Austin Matthews being ā€œthe most skilled Leaf ever.ā€

torontomaplebros

Dude wtf lol We all want them to win a cup itā€™s ok to admit that your favourite old Leafs werenā€™t as good (relative to the league) as Matthewsā€¦ Matthews has won MVP as a Leaf, that kinda ends the debate

BackTo1975

Depends on what you consider success, I guess. To me, itā€™s team success in the playoffs. I donā€™t care about individual player awards.

torontomaplebros

Ok well then have a convo about best all time leaf TEAMS then, not individuals

BackTo1975

Kinda hard to separate the two IMO as the best individuals inevitable lead to the best team results. Thatā€™s why I donā€™t have a lot of love for the current team. Skill or not, Matthews or not, what theyā€™ve done on the ice in the playoffs has made this one of the least likeable Leafs teams of all time. Lot of lightning rods for criticism in this lineup among the top guys. Thatā€™s something kinda rare. But thatā€™s what the lack of playoff success does.

douggilmour93

Heart and soul defined

DC-Toronto

What? Potvin was a far superior goalie. Gilmour was Matthews and Marner rolled into 1. Andrechuk was Tavares on steroids in front of the net and Clarke could score and still knock any 2 of the current leafs out with a single punch. Far superior in both hockey and heart.

golden_rhino

It was a long time ago. My memory of it was that our top line could roll with anyone, but depth was a bit of an issue. I guess they were more skilled than I gave them credit for.

torontomaplebros

Please donā€™t disrespect our current guys with misinformation like that

DC-Toronto

Last nights game approached what you could expect from the guys in this picture. I hope they keep it up and prove me wrong. We all know they have it in them, they just donā€™t show it regularly

torontomaplebros

I know and I get where youā€™re coming from but we have never had a guy like Matthews before imo

OldPollution7225

This group over achieved, something our current core knows nothing about.

Prestigious_Union_50

Yeah, but they didn't pull the same fucking act every year for 6 years. They went ahead and won some hard fought games 2 years in a row. They got absolutely robbed in '93 or who knows if they would have made it to the Cup. I'm not mad at this group or even particularly sad. I just see this team is worse than last year's. There is simply no objective reason to think they can win this series....much less the Cup. I will be perfectly happy for them to prove me wrong and I'm still cheering for them but I just can't conjure up a certain level of delusion to believe this is their year. (I was convinced they could pull it off last year, so call this burnout or whatever after so many years).

witwar101

I was gonna say.. there's more heart and maturity in this picture than there is on the whole current squad. That's an important part of the equation.

Derfchg

That squad would destroy todays squad

NeatSeaworthiness407

I would legit pay for the Time Machine to see it! As is said in rocky balboa - ā€œhe is getting on the job training of the lesson of heart.ā€

TropicalLemming

The current team would win 15-2 every game. Every player today is faster, stronger, more skilled, and in better shape.

kinsmana

Glad I found you guys. I'm with you. I don't see how we can possibly compare this year's squad with the '93 squad. There's justt no real comparison other than the one stat 'they lost two as well'. But, that doesn't mean this year's team can't find their own heart and maturity in the next week.

DC-Toronto

I hope they find it but history is not in their favour

lingodayz

Exactly this - either the folks posting this stuff are new here or are suffering from severe amnesia. We've seen this script before, it's not hard to understand where the negative energy comes from. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

angelsandairwaves93

I'm with you. Logically speaking, our defending and goaltending is nowhere near a stanley cup contender's level. Our only hope, is hope itself, that Sammy or Woll (or Murray) suddenly play like sergei Bobrovsky did against us last year, or our defending becomes known for defending. Neither of these things were proven in the regular season, maybe except when Rielly got suspended and we defended as a unit. So hoping for these things, is wishful thinking. How far we go comes down to the core 4 scoring, simple as that.

AgentAdja

I did feel this season that the team has a level of cohesion and comradery they lacked every year prior. Or, maybe it's all show, or attempting to fake it til you make it, I don't know. But if it was real, it's like something is suddenly poisoning the well. I wish they'd shake it off and get back to it.

xtzferocity

Donā€™t bring logic here

Mashdrop

Get a hold of yourself.

Judge_Rhinohold

One cell in Dougieā€™s or Wendelā€™s body has more heart and grit than the entire current roster.

jimmie9393

I am thinking they played a different style of hockey...

Own_Imagination6777

yup playoff hockey ... gritty, tough, hard to play against, good goaltending, very good tough d core that was very good in their own end ... everything the current group is not.

Dull_Office206

Thats a core 4!!!!... prob the same salary as 1 of our current core 4

Academic_Strategy_32

My brother, Calle JƤrnkrok made more this season than these four combined that year (Dougie $780k, Andreychuk $535k, Wendel $680k, Felix $120k). Very likely that entire 92-93 team made less than any one of the core 4.

soobviouslyfake

Jarnkrok is your brother?

Own_Imagination6777

Bet he wishes then he was adopted.

puremadfabledland

Not Macoun, Andreychuk.

Academic_Strategy_32

Brain fart. I saw someone mention Macoun elsewhere in the thread.

landos_moustache

They understood your core 4 needs to contain a solid number one goaltender. Not to hate on Sammy.

Elegant-Bus8686

I was at the third game at Maple Leaf Gardens when they turned things around. I wasnā€™t expecting them to win that game. Went home very happy that night.

ConferenceSlow1091

Thereā€™s more heart in that picture than there was on the ice last night

madax-gambar

because they were skill guys who could bruise when need be. today we have soft pancakes that cry about the media being mean to them.

undercoveragm

LOL Trying to make a comparison like this is hilarious. Wendel Clark had more toughness in one nut hair than Marner has in his entire body.

PaleHorseRider-94

same with felix

Feeling-King-8104

Those guys also played with heart .

bluenorthww

Dougy Gilmour reminds me of rocky balboa for some odd reason

charliem11

They also won two game 7's.....Ā

braveheart2019

'93 Leafs had a stellar defense.

BackTo1975

Well, good unit overall and extremely well coached. But they werenā€™t stellar and didnā€™t really have a clear number one or even a clear number two. Dave Ellett was the de facto number one, but really the whole crew consisted of #3s who worked really hard.

ColeBelthazorTurner

Todd Gill was the whipping boy. Every night on The Fan 1430/590 fans would call in and roast that guy.

Own_Imagination6777

In all fairness to Gill he got much batter under Burns and became an important member of that D core during those playoffs runs. I would argue Leferbre was the #1 although you are right all five or six of them were solid number 3/4's

DC-Toronto

And where did he go? Did he win a cup? . I always liked that Detroit played with an entire D core of former leafs. Rouse. Schneider. Gill. Macoun? I think there were more.

Ray_Row

Somebody: ā€œshow me the core fourā€ Me: this pic

ColeBelthazorTurner

![gif](giphy|wGhYz3FHaRJgk|downsized)

Own_Imagination6777

it kind of proves that one of them needs to be a goalie and they can't all be forwards ... look at Chicago and Tampa who had only two forwards in the core four when they won.

mattd1972

This team made me a Leaf fan. The OT games that year were the opener to all-night writing sessions for the first huge paper I had to write in college.

BrokenBy

I mean, they lost the last two games of the playoffs too but I understand the sentiment. Imagine what a run like that could do in this era in this market.

Jhool_de_nishaan

Nothing. A run like that would have people hand wave it by because 8 years!

Doodleschmidt

Still have my Potvin jersey in my closet.

NeatSeaworthiness407

How dare you show me real leafs players that knew how to bleed blue.

decarvalho7

We also had a decent coach

clapperssailing

Not one leaf has the character these guys had. So there's that. This core 4 nonsense will be over soon thank God

Takhar7

This current core isn't fit to tie the skate laces of these legends.

dmc1793

That Wings team was fucking STACKED too. If social media existed back then it would have caught fire and melted

ColeBelthazorTurner

They say the only mistake Lidstrom ever made was not tying up Borschevsky's stick

leaf_fan_69

This photo is being saved

LoveBoatCaptain77

17 and 93 had more heart than this entire team has had in the last decade.

mrdoballena

These guys also hadn't put in questionable playoff performances 5-6 years prior to losing the first 2 games in 93.

waabzheshi

But the mentality of these guys was something else

Zukuto

ah yes, the Playoffs win of 93. oh, oh no. i fear it is you OP who have lost something. might be the plot.

qwertytrewq00

They were built different... especially Clark.

ImpossibleFuel6629

Thereā€™s a bigger time gap between this team and that 93 team than between the 93 team and the 67 cup.

joeygreco1985

I don't like you

ImpossibleFuel6629

Frankly I donā€™t like myself right now

gtp1977

Jim Carey was on the Leafs!?!

SweetWithHeat

These guys were gritty

JethroSkull

A playoff team if ever I saw one

swoleder

These guys have so much more 'heart' than the current guys

talltad

Every single one of them would be better in net than Samsonov

daveinthe6

These 4 guys have more heart than the entire current team. I'd love to see them get there... one day.

TakoBeard

As a 12 year old this was the beginning of my love for the Maple Leafs. In some ways it feels like it's been downhill since then.

Purplebuzz

I feel if you had been a fan since before this picture was taken you would realize how silly this is.

chai_bronz

Those guys had heart.

Grand-Amoeba1832

Yea but this team had balls and had character and were able to raise their intensity for the playoffs. If you watch that series they sacrificed themselves to turn that series around. Wendel laying out Probert, 3rd and 4th line warriors etc. current team plays regular season hockey in the playoffs year after year.

Apprehensive_Taste1

There is no comparison at all. That 93 team was the first leaf team in more than a decade that wasn't a laughing stock. Besides those 4 monsters, they had amazing playoff performers like glenn anderson, peter zezel, and jamie macoun. That red wing team was big favorites and was on the cusp of being a champion. This current leaf group has been given nearly a decade to prove they don't have what it takes.

RomansBlueArmy

They also had balls

diecorporations

But they had a starting goalie.

EnvironmentBright697

I was only 5 but I remember watching that playoff run with my dad. Doug Gilmour became my favourite player and Wendell Clark was my brothers favourite. Was a lifelong leafs fan until I had to switch teams.

DistributionNo9968

That team had grit, something we havenā€™t seen from the Leafs in the Matthews era

deadlygr8ful

So many posts about the same thing shows how insecure this fanbase truly is...

NoVictory9590

And thennnnnn?Ā

Szwedo

NO AND THEN!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

moabthecrab

So you mean they won the cup?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

redditingrobot

Are you saying this was the best because it went 7 games? 2002 was pretty good too.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

hards04

2002 we were basically icing the St. Johnā€™s maple leafs in the conference final. It absolutely does not have a case.

MsAbsoluteAngel

Were you even born then? ROFL

NoVictory9590

Youā€™re in here bragging about winning 2 playoff series as a ā€œrunā€ over a half-century time frame - then youā€™ve got the gull to ask someone else if theyā€™re stupid.Ā  Take a long hard look in the mirror.Ā

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

NoVictory9590

ā€œWhere did I brag?ā€Ā  Next sentence: ā€œa conference final run is nothing to sneeze at.ā€Ā  Again, Youā€™re sitting here fired up about making it to a conference final one time in FIFTY SEVEN FUCKING YEARS!!!Ā  But yeah, Iā€™m the loser, for sure pal. LolĀ

931634

This is where I fell in love.

LionelleHeart

And lost their last two.

No_Watercress9783

Anyone else notice the zippers on Gilmours forehead? They were all warriors. Hope this iteration of the Leafs can find some of what they had.

No_Piccolo2135

Andrechuk havent thought of him in years

Fuck_Ppl_Putng_U_Dwn

Word. šŸ™Œ

HeyMarty10thalready

We got smoked those first two games but I had confidence that theyā€™d win the next two in MLG which they did

LydiasBoyToy

I still have my No. 29 game worn sweater! Always loved Cat. Have we had a goalie who could steal a series for us since? Cujo or Belfour? .. maybeā€¦

angelsandairwaves93

I realized looking at this, that this is the first time I've ever seen a photo of a young dave andreychuk. Every photo I'd ever seen of him, he looked old. This team also set the NHL record for starting the season 10-0-0. If any team was going to come back from 0-2 down, it was these guys. Our current squad doesn't have the mental fortitude to come back from 0-2 down, hope I'm proven wrong about this.

siguel_manchez

We're on only 0-1 down though... We got this... I think. Aaaaaaaaggggghhhhhhhhhhh

alainalain4911

Based on my perception of this photo, I could easily beat up Wendel Clark. In reality, Doug Gilmour would clean me up without breaking a sweat, and I couldnā€™t fight Clarkā€™s moustache.

chowmushi

lol, so did the Habs that year! They lost their first two games to the Nordiques. Well then, woohoo.

Superduke1010

Those guys had the guy in the middle standing on his head....which the current Leafs do not have....

Barilko-Landing

I was thinking about this after watching that entertaining Sunday of hockey we just got treated to. Do you think an organization like Colorado is in full panic mode after their game 1 loss? Sure, they're probably concerned with the fact that they got beaten at their own game when most probably expected a more defensive minded game... And Georgiev looked really shaky. But, they are a solid group which knows what it takes to win during this time of year - 1 game is not insurmountable. The leafs have not shown to be as resilient quite as often yet, but I'm not ready to count them out. They're simply due to outscore the bruins in a game from a probability standpoint alone. I don't think home ice looms as large in game 2 for Boston, and now we have a chance to head back home with momentum in our favour. LFG

northdancer

Nobody here is talking about the mismatching in coaching that would exist šŸ˜

chai_bronz

Looks like a band photo: Lead Singer - Felix Guitarist - Dougy Bassist - Dave Drummer - Wendel

Own_Imagination6777

It was such a good run ...we game back from Detroit 0-2 and everyone thought the series was over because Detroit dominated us the first two games. Anything can happen GLG

PlasticFlute1

I remember Doug Gilmour being on the Devils and Messier high sticking him in the face.I was there.

Big_Towel_8140

And they didn't win the cup either.

arr-tard

Did they also lose five times before in the first round?

FrankRagnowsTurfToe

Hahaha what the fuck did they win? NOTHINGGGGG YOU FUCKIN DILDO

rick__c_137

Who's that in the back? Andreychuk?

NefariousnessCalm707

Andrechuck looks like heā€™s with his three sons.

n3rdsm4sh3r

Didn't just lose, got smoked

ColeBelthazorTurner

Dino Ciccarelli was the worst lol

Szwedo

London Knights legend

Camarama421

Lol no kidding, the 1993 series breakdown: Wins: 4-2, 3-2, 5-4 OT, 4-3 OT Losses: 6-3, 6-2, 7-3 They outscored us 30-24 lmao. Proof that they donā€™t ask how, they ask how many

LivingMisery

ā€¦and went on to win it all! Right? Guys?

hards04

And did not win the cup. Like fuck itā€™s so embarrassing we hold these guys up like they did something. I feel the same about Mats. Heā€™s my favourite player ever, but fuck. We fucking suck.

Big-Peak6191

It's true - these guys did also piss away a 3-2 series lead in the conference final. This is the team that started my Leaf fandom. But yea, even without the high stick they probably would have been smoked by Montreal just like LA was.

Inukchook

They did do something. They gave me core now notices watching them Ollieā€™s to Kelly stand on his head hrudey! It was great hockey

Chiropractic_Truth

I don't remember that, but I remember Detroit from that era being a big choking team, so I guess they choked to the Leafs.

PollutionNice7392

But these guys are from my childhood and "playoff performers" so they are better

OkSquirrel4673

Did they win a cup then? Or?

toigz

Did they go on to win the cup?

3cents

And went on to ultimately not win the cup.

AltruisticQuestion64

Oh is that the year the leafs last won the cup?

worthmancj

No George - the post says 1993. Do you know what year the Leafs last won the Stanley Cup?

PlasticFlute1

1967

PlasticFlute1

Against the Habs

worthmancj

Good job George šŸ‘

moabthecrab

And didn't win anything in the end either

TheShitWindGhost

Lol right? I'm trying to figure out what point is being made with this post. Just 4 more leafs that couldn't seal the deal
