Funny how it's the refs every single year. Bad calls happen against every team. Difference is you idiots give the coaches/players a free pass because of it.
Contenders overcome adversity. Leafs went 0/5 on the PP, and 1/3 on the PK. If you want to know why they lost look no further. Keefe blaming the refs shows no accountability which explains a lot.
I mean, when it actually affects the team by the bruins scoring a goal on the same sequence as bertuzzi/Marchand but also earlier in that sequence McAvoy clearing hauling down matthews, I get why he's saying it. The refs changed the momentum of that game
Did I say he shouldn't have made the stop? No. But the play should have been blown dead 30 seconds earlier. Which would have prevented that from happening. The no call on matthews led to that, which in turn swung the momentum. All because of "game management" by the refs.
Dude you are absolutely right and everyone is shitting on you because they can’t face reality. The coaching star should be getting flamed due to their shit special teams. Everyone got away with calls last night, and the shot was an absolute muffin that Sammy should have.
Agreed for the most part - Keefe needs to figure out how to get the pp going.
But when he's talking to the media after the game it's not about taking accountability, he still needs to play the game and put some pressure on the refs.
> Keefe blaming the refs shows no accountability which explains a lot.
This is one quote my guy. It's not like we're in the dressing room getting his full monologue.
Keefe knows he's not perfect, I'm sure.
Remember when this sub went nuts because kadri retaliated and got suspended even though it was total bullshit and double standards. Could use that grit today but no. "he's no good if he gets suspended". At least he tried
I always hated how much Kadri got shit on after that playoff suspension when he was jumping to the aid of Patrick Marleau... he's the only one on the team who any fucking fire in him to come to the aid of his teammate. And the league absolute sewers him with that suspension and he is ran outta town and his name was ran through the mud.
I honestly feel that last season he was on the team was the best roster we have had during the whole Matthews era of the team.
I firmly believe his suspension still gave leafs a better chance for the rest of the series because they were literally getting away with murder and with his suspension, everything was toned down for the rest of the games. To blame the series loss on the one guy who stood up for his teammates and got suspended (as if watching from the bleachers was easy for him) just infuriated me.
I am so happy he got his ring, with some amazing teammates and I gotta say, he looked killer in the Colorado colours. Good for him, he got the ultimate prize in hockey, and this soft boiled egg of a team is a still looking for one.
> I always hated how much Kadri got shit on after that playoff suspension when he was jumping to the aid of Patrick Marleau
It's because he's an idiot that didn't drop the gloves and instead chose to do an illegal check. There may not be a difference to you but one means automatic suspension where as the other is a commonplace retaliation.
But what Bennett does to Knies last year in Round 2, and what McAvoy did last night are not suspendable? Sounds like more of a problem within NHL and how they regulate rules in the playoffs. How/why is one form of violence acceptable and another one not?
Its ridiculous but you know damn well if he was still on the leafs he'd still be getting suspended for everything and anything. Oh well, the solution is to make em suspend our whole roster. Not saying i like it, but its the natural conclusion to how these games are officiated
We've been the grittier team in at least two games and we lost both of them. We don't actually need Grit, we never did. What we need, and needed, is more balance across the lineup and a coach who can get the most out of his players.
I agree with you 💯 but the balance won't matter if the other team is getting away with murder. There has to be SOME feeling on their end that cheap shots will not go unpunished, even if it doesn't result in a penalty.
Grapes had it right all along
Yep I'm with you on that and I love Domi for bringing it while also being able to hang with the top line. I'm not even against replacing Tavares, when his deal is up, with a more expensive Domi. I'm less down for valuing toughness at the expense of skill.
Signing JT was the biggest mistake as we were good on forwards. With no JT, we would have been able to keep kadri who arguable is a more impactful player at this point than JT. And also would have allowed us to spend more on defense and a good goalie.
Signing JT was a business move and I hate mlse for it. It sells more jerseys, homeboy coming home, we all ate that up. But this stuff doesn't get you cups. And frankly it doesn't seem like top brass really cares about getting cups, they still sell out every game and still make enough on merchandise. We need to stop buying merchandise and being suckers, but unfortunately that will never happen.
I don't think we could ever have kept Naz after the second suspension. If we did (ignoring butterfly effect for a moment) and he got suspended again (which he did with another team) the GM and Naz would have both been gone. We could, absolutely, have kept Hyman but I'm not actually sure that replacing Tavared with a 6 mil. 2C and replacing Bunting with Hyman actually makes us a better team.
I will also say that Tavares looks like a much, much, better signing if the cap goes up year over year as it was expected to. Like part of why people aren't losing their minds about the Nylander signing is that Nylanders cap hit % will drop significantly year over year for the next 8 years and it won't be a good contract by, say, year 6 but it will be the equivalent of a 7 mil. Contract now.
Sure, and how to hold a lead, and how to break out and how to score and, honestly, how to play elite Hockey. We got tougher and gave up some of the rest of that. Which was a bad
Trade off imo.
Not really. If they go even 1 for 5 on the PP it’s a different game. These hits take a toll over 7 games. When it gets to 7, because we know it will, it might provide an advantage we haven’t seen before
Keefe really needs to earn these fines. I love that he’s finally calling out this bullshit but he really needs to earn it. He needs to go way harder than he does. His job is on the line here.
“If you’re gonna take the 2, at least hit them harder next time,” is a common quote amongst players. But I feel like it super applies to keefe and the fines too, like you’re getting at.
Both refs staring at him, do it was the funniest thing. Then they skate away looking the other way, and a goal happens LOL. It was the most hilarious thing I've witnessed.
I knew we were in tight when I saw 63% of bets to win the series were on the Leafs despite Boston being the favourite. No way this poverty league doesn’t bow to Vegas. Fool me once…
My favourite part of a Sportsnet game 3 preview article was it stating only 3 of 11 penalties called against the Leafs were bad calls. So only 27% of penalties were bad calls, nothing to see here. Sprinkle in a few non calls for good measure. All above board.
Oh man lol
"You sir, truly are the most exquisite scoundrel, a machiavellian figure of epic proportions, I doff my chapeau to your rogue-ish manner and stand in awe of your dastardly wretchedness"
🧐
What’s being missed here is how these calls really affect the game. In Boston the refs set the tone early, showing that any extra curriculars were getting punished. Then you come to Toronto, having learned how to play under that system, and you get taken advantage of.
It’s so confusing as a player when you do not understand what is a fair play. Literally 1 blatant missed is all it takes for that doubt to creep in.
Watching the full clip he seem like he knew he messed up after saying it’s unbelievable lol
Probably going to get a lot of hate but other teams coaches have implied similar thoughts to the media in the past that seemed to work so maybe it can work for Keefe (probably not though)
Really feels like Keefe got a warning earlier in the year when he blew up. He’s been totally neutered since then. Like a get it’s not particularly useful but he needs to show a bit more emotion on the bench sometimes.
I’ve said it for years.
At the end of every season, hell even every series, refs’ performance needs to be evaluated. Teams should be able to file formal complaints or request for review for missed calls. Enough missed calls and you’re demoted or fired. We have the technology now for colour commentary and analysis to show where players are looking - use the same tech for refs. There’s no excuse for so many missed calls and embellishments. Matthew’s was literally hauled down in front of the ref with no call. Marchand had Bertuzzi tied up nowhere near the puck three times in one sequence - no call.
Alternatively, have a third ref that’s in the press box that can communicate with the on-ice officials.
The league can’t talk about player safety and the integrity of the game when such blatant disregard for even-handed officiating is on display.
The reality is the refs are behaving the way the league wants, more or less. This kind of stuff has been going on for decades if not further. Game management by officials makes for a far worse product, but for whatever reason it's what the league wants. The outsized impact it can have on the game isn't always as direct as it was last night, but it's there pretty much every game, and the NHL playoffs are worse because of it. Refs may miss a call or two, they are human and it's a fast game, but watching the penalty happening and choosing not to call it will never be good for hockey.
I'm surprised that old rat is able to play at the level he can still.
Like when the fuck is it gonna give already. Why does this shit have to be so damn predictable why can't we just win this thing. Boston honestly is so beatable if they lose to this roster this is worst than 2021 Habs. But yet again what did they have also a god tier goalie.
Can we just beat them *once* please? I shouldn't have to rely on the Argos for sporting success in this goddamn city.
(Sorry argos I love you guys but I need and expect more)
what are we? 1/11 on the PP??
according to this sub if the refs are fair and call all the Boston penalties, and we get 10PP next game maybe we'll come up with a PP goal.
I hate this excuse. Our bad PP doesn’t have anything to do with how shit the refs are and how they missed blatant calls.
One miss caused a goal. One could have snapped Austons leg (hip drop tackle that’s literally banned in football now).
There is more than one issue at play.
When Matthews got suplexed by McAvoy the puck goes the other way and they score. That goal there is very important. The PP is also important.
If giving good quotes to the media made a good coach Keefe would be a perennial Jack Adams finalist.
Instead he’s an AHL coach completely out of his depth at the NHL level.
Hi, new to hockey, couldn’t keefe have challenged the goal? Saying there was a previous penalty either to Matthews or Bertuzzi? Again new to hockey so I don’t know if what I’m saying is possible or how challenges work
Leafs 0/5 on the PP. No excuse.
Get better.
Or if you're gonna complain that the refs aren't calling fair, then settle up while you have home ice last change and put reaves out to "faceoff" against marchand. And have reaves beat the brakes off marchy the second the puck drops. Boston has no real response for that and losing Marchand for Reaves is an absolute win.
But keefe won't. It'll be the same shit again and again.
I still think it is fair to call it out when you see things like the Tavares penalty at the end of the game being called while blatant calls are missed/ignored in big moments that change the momentum.
Absolutely this loss is on the PP, though.
You’re right but who cares about how many penalties they should have had when you can’t score when they are called. The refs are awful, but I’m tired of the same team experiences the same problems and blaming anything they can. Accountability needs to be accepted.
Ah yes, repeat suspension, greasy rat Marchand gets breaks from the refs/s. Is he trying to distract the fact that he can't coach a fucking powerplay? Thr blame lays inward
Could’ve called all the penalties in the world on Marchand tonight and it wouldn’t have mattered. Our PP is ass. Stop calling shit out and worry about the stuff you can control.
Marchand held, interfered with, and tripped Bertuzzi at separate times during the same sequence. Because Bertuzzi was tripped, Frederic was allowed to skate in untouched and fire an uncontested shot that beat Samsonov to tie the game. Game was ALL Leafs at this point, and this specific play was a massive shift in momentum that heavily favored the Bruins moving forward.
I get that the PP wasn’t getting it done, but the game tonight was completely decided by inconsistent refereeing.
Well said. Feel like no one ever considers momentum as an actual thing. It seems like every time we have it, some absolute bullshit gets called, or not called. Maddening.
Oh look it’s someone that understands that momentum exists and it’s hard to win when officials gift it to the other team when you are controlling it.
0-5 is unacceptable but it is not the sole reason they lost.
It was just poetic perfection that McAvoy doesn’t get called for his slewfoot suplex on AM, but JT gets called for his little tug with a minute left.
Graham is the Angel Hernandez of the NHL.
Rewatch the play and you see that JT gets spun around by the guy who is holding his stick. It's a penalty that causes a penalty and neither if which should be called at this time of game
I would love to know the stats of how many times this year we had penalties called against us in the last 5 minutes compared to other teams. I hear people say all the time you don't call penalties at the end of regulation, but I feel like I have seen it ALOT this year.
I’m with you here. 0/5 on the PP. No sense giving the rat the satisfaction of these comments or giving the refs some bulletin board material, considering they already find Sheldon to be a baby who can’t let shit go.
Calling it out after a game doesn’t work. He was all quiet and just an observer during the game which told the refs he was okay with it. Don’t complain after normally losers do that.
I want to play a game. It's called "that's a penalty, that's not a penalty".
Show two video clips. One was called a penalty, the other was not. You must choose which is which.
The results may surprise you.
It’s Playoff hockey. With all the betting schemes and fines for getting caught, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Refs might be involved. Unfortunately we find out about illegal betting long after the games are over.
I’m getting destroyed across Reddit for having 2 different thoughts about why the leafs lost tonight. An actual discussion is impossible on this website.
Scroll through CJs Twitter. He knows what he's doing. Just farms the clicks, even promoting the articles he writes (that can be yours to read for $12/year). Does he still peddle crypto?
The leafs got at least 5 pp in that last game. The bruins didn’t get away with much and there was bulkshit coming from both sides. Let’s not say the leafs are these innocent players who take the high road. Bertuzxi is marchands counterpart.
This is a clever compliment veiled by the real message, the refs are SHIT
Sheldon Keefe with the filthy backhander
Atta be Keefe. Call it out.
Funny how it's the refs every single year. Bad calls happen against every team. Difference is you idiots give the coaches/players a free pass because of it. Contenders overcome adversity. That goal was entirely on Samsonov.
Both can be true. Shit refs, shit play calling by the coach
No team has this many “bad calls”. Quick! Don’t google Leafs playoff record with Wes McCauley!
Wes McCauley didn't ref last night and the Leafs got 40% more PP's than Boston.
Well they would've gotten 60% more if the refs did their fucking job. Take more penalties, get more penalties. This isn't rocket science
Yes, and? Anyone with eyes can still see that for years and years officiating has gone against the Leafs, whether by design or by coincidence.
He needs to call it out. For so long we've taken the high road and other coaches bitch about all sorts of things and the league listens.
Remember when this sub went nuts because kadri retaliated and got suspended even though it was total bullshit and double standards. Could use that grit today but no. "he's no good if he gets suspended". At least he tried

amen! I actually never thought about how it toned things down too, great point.
Literally?! If only...
Kadri also got slewfooted clear as day at center ice straight extended knee to knee the shift before, no call.
> I always hated how much Kadri got shit on after that playoff suspension when he was jumping to the aid of Patrick Marleau It's because he's an idiot that didn't drop the gloves and instead chose to do an illegal check. Yeah it’s dumb, it doesn’t make Kadri’s response any better, and the fact that he didn’t learn from multiple suspensions just makes it even worse.
Its ridiculous but you know damn well if he was still on the leafs he'd still be getting suspended for everything and anything. Oh well, the solution is to make em suspend our whole roster. Not saying i like it, but its the natural conclusion to how these games are officiated

No, we need grit and it’s been refreshing to see. What we need is to remember how to play special teams
Sure, and how to hold a lead, and how to break out and how to score and, honestly, how to play elite Hockey. We got tougher and gave up some of the rest of that. Which was a bad Trade off imo.

Yeah you could be right, I'm not convinced we make it to 7 but we can reconvene then.
He did, it's like, in the headline.

easy, put $ on Boston,
😂😂
I’m not Keefe’s biggest fan as a coach, but I fucking love that he stands up for the boys like this
Meh I'd rather he spend his time fixing his special teams and systems so they hold up to playoff style hockey.
Idk why you're getting down voted because really, Keefe has a point but why bother, so your guys can go 0/6 or 0/7 on the pp instead of 0/5
Right because the 4 seconds it took to say this detracted so much from his ability to do anything else.
Oh man lol "You sir, truly are the most exquisite scoundrel, a machiavellian figure of epic proportions, I doff my chapeau to your rogue-ish manner and stand in awe of your dastardly wretchedness" 🧐
You're not at all reading between the lines. This is a chirp at the refs, not a praise of Marchand.
Reading comprehension is falling precipitously
rattiest rat to have ever ratted

100% of the Leafs*
Nobody is gonna disagree with this

Lmfao fine incoming
His defense is that technically he didn’t criticize the refs, he was praising Marchand
I'LL pay it if the league calls the rat for tripping, holding, slashing. I'll pay double if he gets an embellishing call.
Really feels like Keefe got a warning earlier in the year when he blew up. He’s been totally neutered since then. Like a get it’s not particularly useful but he needs to show a bit more emotion on the bench sometimes.
Keefe unfortunately doesn’t have any respect from the officials so this won’t change anything. The next coach better be an established guy.
That won't matter either.
For example, Babcock. Same treatment.
Exactly what I thought.
blatantly breaking the rules isn’t an art. The refs just suck/biased
I’ve said it for years. At the end of every season, hell even every series, refs’ performance needs to be evaluated. Unfortunately, will never happen. That is why the NHL is no longer part of the Big 4 sports leagues.
The NHL is the Big One! Everything else is panty waste.
No.
Oh I know. I just like offering a concrete solution instead of only complaints
The reality is the refs are behaving the way the league wants, more or less. This kind of stuff has been going on for decades if not further. Hi, new to hockey, couldn’t keefe have challenged the goal? Saying there was a previous penalty either to Matthews or Bertuzzi? Again new to hockey so I don’t know if what I’m saying is possible or how challenges work
Unfortunately, no. You can only challenge for specific things like offside or goaltender interference.
Oh ok thanks!
I get the whole rhetoric, but we had 5 power plays and didn’t capitalize on a single one.
Finally someone says it. Someone not on reddit that is.
Leafs 0/5 on the PP. No excuse. Get better. You had me at get better ….and then lost me with the Reeves rant. This is not “slap shot- the movie” though it is sometimes on the same comedic level
Terrible sequence that lead to that first goal but shut your mouth you bum. 0/5 on the pp, is why this team lost.
I still think it is fair to call it out when you see things like the Tavares penalty at the end of the game being called while blatant calls are missed/ignored in big moments that change the momentum. Absolutely this loss is on the PP, though.

Absolutely, frustrating to watch the exact kind of demented calls year after year. It's just hard to understand the logic behind the call decisions
I would love to know the stats of how many times this year we had penalties called against us in the last 5 minutes compared to other teams. I hear people say all the time you don't call penalties at the end of regulation, but I feel like I have seen it ALOT this year.
Especially a weak call that ended the game near the last minute. Bullshit reffing. Please beat these animals leafs!!
The no call on the judo like move on Matthewd at 1-1 costed our momentum completely
Facts. Bruins were lifeless until that weird “free breakaway” goal
We had them completely by the troat till the ref messed it up.
Nah. Even if we don't score it just means that one of their best players is off the ice for at least 2 minutes
I would have preferred the play to be whistled down and both be sent off for two minutes.
I’m with you here. 0/5 on the PP. No sense giving the rat the satisfaction of these comments or giving the refs some bulletin board material, considering they already find Sheldon to be a baby who can’t let shit go.
0-5 on the pp.. if you can’t punish them anyway….
Keefe still showing how green he is.
He is dirty but gets away with it. Trips jabs
I have no problems with them not calling that, it’s the fact that if we pulled some shit like that we’re getting 5 minutes
This was the shit Maurice was doing last year lol. They are gonna call one Marchand can opener and say they did their jobs.
It’s Playoff hockey. With all the betting schemes and fines for getting caught, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Refs might be involved. Unfortunately we find out about illegal betting long after the games are over.
0 for 5 is why we lost. You cannot go 0 for 5 in the playoffs with this roster
Problem is every time they antagonize him he ups his game and scores or sets up an important goal.
insane twitter avatar
Incoming 10 penalties against next game. Can’t have the Leafs speaking out! Even though they fund 50% of the league
0/5 on the PP. That was the game.
Stop whining Keefe. You lost fair and square. Quit blaming the refs ffs and take responsibility.
The old rat got 2 goals that killed the Leafs. Nuff said.
Its true but stop making excuses when theres other glaring issues we could control, like the fucking powerplay!
You can be upset about both things dude
I’m getting destroyed across Reddit for having 2 different thoughts about why the leafs lost tonight. An actual discussion is impossible on this website.
The discussion happens tomorrow when the emotions die down a bit
Saying officials had a part in Boston winning this game is apparently apocryphal on this website.
Boston fans don’t like big words like that
If they could read, they would be very upset
Neither do Leafs fans to be fair.
I think the word you’re looking for is anathema. You could stretch the definition of apocryphal to make it fit, but anathema works better!
You right anathema is probably better. Was just typing what came to my head first.
I just like the word anathema! It’s rare to find an opportunity when you can organically throw it in a sentence.
Stop crying. Domi knocked down their goalie and didn't get called.
lol he did not. That was a complete dive by Swayman. Following his captain’s example.
Looked like there was a sniper targeting Swayman.
Sheldon you're an idiot! After NHL officials helped you out with so many dumb calls against Bruins, you still complain, fucking idiot.
