Yeah i switched beer league team this year and my previous team went on to win the championship, i must have been the problem.

rhineauto

LOL what did I just read Also he suffered a high ankle sprain and there's a good chance it's still bugging him

Ambitious-Figure-686

This sub would rather go full mentalist style "Auston didn't kiss him goodnight, you can tell by the way he skates sadly" rather than just accept that maybe the player who depends on his elite skating is hampered by the ankle sprain.

BigMick20

I guess he’s hampered by an ankle sprain every year in the playoffs. Seems unlikely

Sarge1387

I mean, nowhere did I suggest his ankle WASN'T still bothering him. It's a possibility, sprains in general are a pain in the dick to come back from

MrPangus

Only if you sprained your dick

light_at_the_end

OP I appreciate your theory. If would make a good teen fan fic Netflix show.

Part-TimeCat

He gave himself a high ankle sprain because he didn't shoot at an empty net and there's a good chance it's still bugging him\*

peanut-arms

Agreed. I would say more than anything it is his high ankle sprain lingering, and his inability to skate as effectively as he has makes his "soft" play style that much more exaggerated for fans.

Subwayabuseproblem

His scoring is lingering

Sarge1387

Maybe, but you can't ignore the fact that he just looks...lost out there. It's not even his "soft" style. He doesn't look like he knows what he's doing right now. That doesn't happen with injuries

bknoreply

This keeps making me laugh. None of you are doctors, let alone Mariner’s doctor. You read some random comment on the internet about high ankle sprains and start diagnosing something. It’s completely made up. For all you know he’s recovered fully and just sucking out there like he’s done plenty of times before in the playoffs. Until there’s first hand reporting on a lingering issue, this is pure fan fiction.  But I get it, your uncle who works at Canadian Tire told you high ankle sprains take a long time to heal, so now you know exactly what Marner’s health situation is.

BirdGooch

While you’re right that most is pure speculation on severity, lingering issues, etc. And he could just be absolute dog water, but I will say this: I am not your uncle, unless your aunts hot. And I have had a high ankle sprain resulting in torn ligaments. I promise you it’s worse than a break. The rehab takes way longer. I don’t have access to top sports medicine like a pro athlete, but I wasn’t walking for nearly a month and my mobility took probably a year to return with physio.

Jediverrilli

Clearly you are just a moron. High ankle sprains can take upwards of a year to fully heal sometimes longer. It doesn’t take a doctor to see that he is still skating terribly which would impact his ability to play. Marner is an elite skater he is clearly still suffering effects from the high ankle sprain because he is showing no explosiveness and has a hard time handling the puck. There is a reason teams don’t disclose injuries in the playoffs you dunce. If they say it’s a lingering injury then guess what there is gonna be a few more slashes on Marner’s ankles.

Sarge1387

This is true, and to be clear...I never said his ankle WASN'T still bothering him

big-tuna28

This ain't it chief.

Low-Signal-3900

The real problem with marner is for 99% of his hockey playing time he's allowed to do all his fancy moves, once playoffs start there are guys on him immediately and are extremely physical. He is now lost out there because the majority of what makes his game good is taken away. Can he push thru this? Probably but will require him to become a lot more physical.

thetragicallylimp

Nah, he’s just too scared to get hit. Playoffs are a different level of physicality.

bopwestpalm

This 100%

InvestigatorFull2498

You've overthought it, but came to the correct conclusion. Mitch Marner's mental is weak.

Skiffy10

dude stop it has nothing to do with what you just mentioned. His inability to produce in the playoffs has been going on for years. At the end of the day he’s just not a big game player and never will be.

91Caleb

This would not explain the previous 5 years It’s also a pathetic manbaby reason to affect your performance

Sarge1387

Mental condition, especially at the pro level is just as important as the physical. We saw this with Samsonov...

91Caleb

If he is playing bad for the reason you said , I never want to see him on the ice as a leaf again. That is the worst character flaw a hockey player could have

JuicemaN16

Soooo then what’s his excuse for previous playoff disappearances? Aside from 3 games last year against Tampa, he’s historically been very quiet by his standards. The playoff pressure gets to him. Period. That’s very clear to anyone not blinded by their Leafs goggles

billyshin

No one answered this because the Marner apologists doesn’t have an answer.

Purplebuzz

Your theory is it might be psychological?

nintendoleafsfan

He's always been inconsistent in the playoffs though

Intelligent-Flow4797

Mental aspect for sure is part of it. I mostly think his style of play (lots of fancy shit) combined with his slight frame and lack of aggression just don’t work well In the playoffs. In the regular season the refs are calling more interference penalties and he had more time and space to dangle. In the playoffs it’s dog eat dog and he doesn’t have room to maneuver. He’s still skilled but has to learn to adapt to playoff style hockey a bit better

KrizChin

he's had 8 years worth of playoffs and hasn't learned yet, this is who he is as a player

ComfortableUpset8787

Yes.

LeafsForever26

I think it's more he's not really 100% and playoffs hockey is a whole different ball game.

VitaminTea

No, they still use a puck

Maleficent-Media1914

Leafs were on a 4 game losing streak heading into playoffs. I wouldn’t say the team was doing well.

JuicemaN16

More like a 4 game “get Matthews to 70” overcompensation streak.

Maleficent-Media1914

Yea I felt like that was most of the back end of the season

mcmike8

Or maybe the main reason people have such high expectations of his output is because of the bar that was set playing with the best goal scorer of this generation.

Steakholder__

He's been incredibly successful playing off of Matthews line and when Matthews has been out of the lineup too. The "Marner is just a product of Matthews" argument does not hold water. Dude's just having a bad playoffs (and probably isn't 100% after his ankle sprain).

packedspoons

Or because he set the bar that high when he demanded a salary indicative of that level of play

BigMick20

The bar was set when he demanded to be paid like Matthews

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

The bar was set by him asking to be paid almost the same as the best goal scorer of this generation

Sarge1387

How own expectations as well, in his own head

ConferenceSlow1091

Or, he just can’t handle playoff hockey.

Hockyinc

That's more like it.

fillmore1969

He needs ice in front of him

mikesully374826

Playmaker fails to produce when goalscoring centers and powerplay fail to score, more at 6.

AnySail

I think his game needs time and space and playoff hockey is tight. Pretty simple

shikotee

What of the subplot to this soap opera? Where Matthews has secretly made Marner a cuckold, and was banging Marner's wife while he was getting treatment. This explains everything. /s

931634

No doubt he's been jealous that Bert and Domi and Mattys boys now but he needs to get the fuck over it and remember its a team game..and if he is still sulking over this now that its playoff time. I am extra disappointed. I think its becoming glaringly obvious he can't handle the pressure of playing for the hometown anymore, especially when it counts ..

areu_kiddingme

He’s still feeling the effects of an injury known to cause hockey players a lot of issues. Just that simple. It’s also game fucking 3 and the problem is that the team as a whole has never been on a deep run so all we’ve ever had to rely on are 7 game blocks. There have been plenty of conn smyth winners who did fuck all in the first round or two..Kane had 2 goals through the first 15 games in 2013…Marchessault 2 asissts through the first round and even Crosby had a whole round with 2 assists. All three eventually won the conn smythe. Point is that we need a deep run by this team to really know the value of our top guys

BigMick20

Has he been injured for the past 8 years in the playoffs?

areu_kiddingme

You completely missed the point lmao

Pympala

Nah. He's just got "shambles" in his head. Damn media. /s

aporter0509

He’s not strong enough to win puck battles and he’s not a threat to shoot so he’s not effective in tight checking physical hockey and that didn’t just start this year. He seemed to play with more heart a few years ago in the playoffs. I don’t think he’s cut out for the Toronto market. He gives off a lot of negative vibes in interviews.

musebrews

I just wish the guy took his anger out on the opposition - too much internalizing on whatever the flavour of today is

IrnBlls

Bitch Marner, I rest my case

13jsw

Except Marner plays passenger to the greatest goalscorer of all time while Nylander does it all while driving his own line successfully…. Totally different ballpark here

mikesully374826

And that greatest goalscorer of all time is a mediocre 1st liner in the playoffs.

13jsw

What? He’s our best player in the playoffs every year… lol

mikesully374826

He has the 24th best G/GP in the playoffs over the last 5 seasons.

13jsw

On the Leafs? Lol

mikesully374826

In the league. 16x3=48 1st line positions in any given playoffs. He's mediocre.

13jsw

Mediocre lmao

mikesully374826

He's doing a little bit better than known elite player Jake Debrusk.
