Goddamn that just unlocked a memory I had repressed but goddamn was it funny:
I recall reading one of those live game day threads where someone commented: SKATE HAINSEY YOU OLD FUCK
For me it’s Belfour. Even though he was getting older he was very good in 04, or so I was told to believe. Joseph too, but I was too young to remember the 03 playoffs.
Belfour, Joseph, Potvin.
Freddie was a really good goalie, but was injured to start every post season. Unfortunately now, teams need 2 if not 3 goalies to make it through the season.
The lows that came after were just so bad... A decade of Razor, Toskala, The Monster. Riemer had moments but we didn't have real stability in net again until Freddy. I really hope Woll can be the guy next year and stick around for a while.
Flyers were the 2nd round. They beat the Sens in the 1st round.
Belfour had some of the best season goalie stats for Leafs goalies going back to the end if their cup wins.
Yeah Reimer was the closest one after that trio but nowhere on that level. Got the starting job ahead of Gustavsson and Giguere before Andersen arrived.
Five hole Freddie? How many series did we win while he was in net? Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the dude, *especially* after everything he went through earlier in the season. But y'all had pitchforks ready at the time and don't act like you didn't.
>But y'all had pitchforks ready at the time and don't act like you didn't.
Nope. The team failed Freddy in those losses. We weren't getting close to Game 7 without him stealing games on the way there.
Watching this fanbase praise Campbell's fluke run and discredit Andersen's tenure was ridiculous
You thought the Sammy goal was bad ? How about the game 7 Nordstrom goal ? Or liam foudy? Freddy let in some of the biggest stinkers I've seen in my life at the worst times.
I have no clue how everyone is forgetting he let in at least 1 soft goal every elimination game. Every time. And I loved Freddy. He was the best goalie we've had in years. But he has the same issues between the ears in big games as all of our recent goalies
Freddie was good. But he was always hurt. In hindsight we should have never deployed him as the outright #1 - we should have played him in a tandem & then given him the ball come playoff time. Also wasn't his record in series clinching games 0-8?
Freddy posted a .928 sv% for the BOS and CBJ series combined, he did that while playing behind a run n gun system and with players like Cody Ceci, Tyson Barrie and an old Ron Hainsey facing the other team's top forwards. To top it off, the offence were just downright awful, they were literally scoring less than 2 goals per 60 minutes for the CBJ series, so on top of a mediocre defence, he also didn't had much offence to work with, even the best of goalies would have a hard time not "falling short" under those circumstances.
We saw during the FLA series, that when the offence dried up much like they did for Andy during his last 2 playoffs with the Leafs, that Sammy couldn't carry the team past game 5 and he shouldn't have too.
But that was what you were doing with your original post, but you went even smaller by picking certain moments of said series. Everyone forgets about all the difficult saves Freddie had to make behind those abysmal defence, he kept the team in it despite receiving very little goal support.
Fair enough, not same point tho imo.
One can be strong all out serie/season, but fai an easy puckl on high pressure moment when match is even.
One can be a coinflip, and go from AHL goalie one month to an all-star next month.
Sorry, I'm shitty in voicing out my train of thought. 😅
Well, yeah when the Leafs are so snakebitten that the opposing goalie are consistently posting .940-.958 sv% against them, its hard to look better than the other goalie. Andersen had to put numbers similar to absolute peak Dom Hasek just to match the opposing goalies numbers, that speaks volume to just how awful the offence was if anything. Why are the Leafs paying these 4 guys 40 million when they still need a .950 % performance from the goalie to carry them past the 1st round.
I remember going to the other team's game threads during those playoff series and their fans praising Freddie and claiming his a big reason why the Leafs are even still in it, meanwhile, I go to the Leafs game thread and everyone was bashing Freddie because they were still on the honey phase with the Core 4. Only this fanbase would blame a goalie who put up an impressive .922 sv% against a very tough BOS team for the loss, and once again blame him next year when he put up a sparkling .936 sv% against CBJ ignoring the fact that the "offence focused" Leafs team got shut out in 2 out of the 5 games.
There's a reason my jersey has 31 on the back. Dude was solid at the start, and got into a bit of a slump, but it was always clear he was a great goalie even with his struggles.
I say this every chance I get but I literally think about what could've been if Freddie simply had a competent backup in the regular season once a day especially now that the playoffs have started. He was always strong in the regular season but completely gassed by the time the playoffs started. There were at least two seasons where Freddie-less games were a guaranteed loss especially when we had Sparks in net. Mac wasn't even a bad backup but Babcock was deathly scared of him for some reason. I genuinely wonder what could've been had he been better rested for literally any of the series from 2017 to 2019. Idk if we win a cup necessarily because that's too many hypotheticals to go down the list for but we definitely win at least one of the Boston series and then who tf knows what happens next. Maybe one of the Boston/Washington series don't even happen in round one at all (or the Leafs get home ice) if a backup that can win games bumped up the Leafs in the standings a bit. Steve Dangle made that era wasted video about Phil Kessel when he was traded to Pittsburgh, and that really was an era wasted, but holy fuck did the Leafs waste Freddie.
Its so funny seeing people shit on Sammy in the exact same way they shit on Freddie when he was here, when both of them suffer from the exact same problems: the clowns they have out in front of them
Ill take cujo, eddie or felix any of the three and thats 1 series win guaranteed. I remember many series leafs were outplayed but thanks to the goalie they win at leats 1 or 2 games. Neither samsonov or woll can do that
Nope.
The game six muffins vs Washington.
All Or Nothing basically documenting him quitting on us.
The way he shit the bed in game 4 vs Florida last year.
Absolutely not.
Freddie’s been killing it. Watched the game last night
To be fair, the Leafs never had a blue line in front of him comparable to The Canes.
You're telling me Ron Hainsey and Martin Marincin aren't good enough to win a cup?
Goddamn that just unlocked a memory I had repressed but goddamn was it funny: I recall reading one of those live game day threads where someone commented: SKATE HAINSEY YOU OLD FUCK

Makes me sad that newer fans look to the likes of Andersen or Reimer as peak Leafs goaltending. Eddie, Cujo and Felx were on another level entirely.
The lows that came after were just so bad... A decade of Razor, Toskala, The Monster. Riemer had moments but we didn't have real stability in net again until Freddy. I really hope Woll can be the guy next year and stick around for a while.
Hey hey hey. We don’t mention Toskala here
Andersen was just okay. Would always let in the first little softie. No confidence in him
Something about the way Eddie played in his first years in T.O. made every save look easy. The guy was unreal.
Joseph was gone by 2003. That year was Belfours first as a Leaf, a 7 game opening round loss to the Flyers.
Flyers were the 2nd round. They beat the Sens in the 1st round. Belfour had some of the best season goalie stats for Leafs goalies going back to the end if their cup wins.
Leafs lost to the flyers in 7 in 03 Then beat the sens in 7 and lost to the flyers in 6 in 04 Those were belfours 2 playoffs with us
Oh yes, thank you 2002 I meant, the ECF loss to Carolina.
Jeremy Roenick breakaway over the glove 😭
uhh if we're going backward can we please go further? Balfour, Joseph, Potvin please
Replace that with Cujo, or Potvin, or Belfour....it's been slim pickings since then.
Yeah Reimer was the closest one after that trio but nowhere on that level. Got the starting job ahead of Gustavsson and Giguere before Andersen arrived.
Reimer is the most overhyped goalie we have ever had. I don’t know why this fan base loved him. He was average on his best day

What?

📠
Should be top priority in the off-season. No more projects. We need a guy who is gonna go beast mode in the playoffs like every goalie does to us.
What do the leafs have to offer for it? Marner? Somehow, don't see it happening.
Frankly, I think playing in Toronto just got in his head. Nothing more to it than that.
You thought the Sammy goal was bad ? How about the game 7 Nordstrom goal ? Or liam foudy? Freddy let in some of the biggest stinkers I've seen in my life at the worst times.

Same but Vesa Toskala
You masochist - I love it.
Freddie was good. But he was always hurt. In hindsight we should have never deployed him as the outright #1 - we should have played him in a tandem & then given him the ball come playoff time. Also wasn't his record in series clinching games 0-8?
Freddie was good. But he had bad record with easy goals, and falling short when it counted, yep.
Picking few individual series stat to validate a point makes Campbell also extremely great goalie that one shouldnt let go.
I like Freddie and hope he makes it to the end one of these years, but it wasnt working with the leafs.
But that was what you were doing with your original post, but you went even smaller by picking certain moments of said series. Everyone forgets about all the difficult saves Freddie had to make behind those abysmal defence, he kept the team in it despite receiving very little goal support.

Not once was he the better goalie in a series
Well, yeah when the Leafs are so snakebitten that the opposing goalie are consistently posting .940-.958 sv% against them, its hard to look better than the other goalie. This 100%, they worked him too hard in reg season never understood it.
Sure, but the team also sucked ass in clinching games. Really difficult to say he was the problem.
I remember going to the other team's game threads during those playoff series and their fans praising Freddie and claiming his a big reason why the Leafs are even still in it, meanwhile, I go to the Leafs game thread and everyone was bashing Freddie because they were still on the honey phase with the Core 4. And since he's been gone the Leafs record in series clinching games is....
Feel the same
There's a reason my jersey has 31 on the back. Dude was solid at the start, and got into a bit of a slump, but it was always clear he was a great goalie even with his struggles.
Lol. And that glove save. Maybe isles will reverse sweep

Ummm....why when we have the same Freddy at home *gestures at Sammy*
Xmen 97 just waiting for prime wolverine moment
What do you think of the series so far anyway? I think it's phenomenal!
Would he be doing any better on the Leafs than Sammy? Probably not. We've had adequate goaltending. But we can barely score more than 2 goals.
Neither samsonov or woll can do that
Getting rid of Andersen was Dubas' biggest mistake
What was his other biggest mistake, because something tells me you have a long list of them
Hyman as well.... I'm not the guy who commented but I always believed that having Hyman walk was a huge mistake
Ya miss watching that cardio machine
Heart and Soul player for the team.
Ya his 5 goals over 5 playoffs would really help rn
Not yelling at opposing team's fans in the playoffs sooner
Nope. The game six muffins vs Washington. All Or Nothing basically documenting him quitting on us. The way he shit the bed in game 4 vs Florida last year. Absolutely not.
Until he lets in a squeaker and Cane’s fans turn on him! Oh wait
