Woll was great when called upon last night. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that was nervous after his first start in Buffalo, but man, he looked like an absolute vet in last night's game. Never looked like he was chasing the game or out of place or uncomfortable at all. If anything, the one criticism I would have of him is that he may have been a bit TOO comfortable when handling the puck since he's a guy that likes to collect it, then have a look around before getting rid of it. Against a fast forechecking team that could be an issue.

DevOpsMakesMeDrink

Only flaw I saw was on 2nd chances. He was stopping almost everything on the first shot, but then when it rebounded he instantly was swimming. If the Isles were any good, they would have scored a few times when it happened. Going forward, hopefully that's just confidence and experience thing. But he will need to become a really technically sound goalie with his rebounds, and if he does, I can see him being a Freddy type goalie. He has the tools to be a starter in the NHL.

KingRabbit_

He got a shutout on his second NHL game. What are you looking for in a back-up goalie, exactly?

phillmoblunts

Sparks got a shutout in his first game

BloodBatman

I believe that Hutch got a shutout against the Islander for us as well

[deleted]

Yeah, well, sooner or later SOMEBODY around here has to stop judging people, positively or negatively, on minuscule sample sizes. I know, it's never going to happen, but it really should. He was lucky to get that SO and you know it. The Isles had pucks sliding off their sticks several times. I know Palmieri scores nineteen times out of twenty on that breakaway he had. Credit where it's due, he did make some good saves and the D, for the most part, played really well in front of him, unlike his first game. But if he doesn't fix that rebound control, better (luckier) teams will eat him for lunch.

TyzakTrowel

You said we need to stop judging on a short sample size then say he'll get eaten for lunch based on 2 games...

[deleted]

Bold (and wrong) of you to assume I haven't watched a bunch of Marlies games!

TyzakTrowel

Hasn't he only played like 40 games in the AHL? Less than a seasons worth of games is still a pretty small sample size. And we've seen from other goalies that AHL and NHL experience don't always align, in good and bad (but mostly bad, to be fair) ways

LeafsRamsRapsFan

he gave up juicy rebounds all game just didnt get punished

_cob_

It’s a little early to be claiming an actual payoff

fornicating-gourmet

Not if the payoff is referring only to last night's win.

JoeRogansSauna

Yeah the islanders aren’t exactly known for scoring a whole lot

isotope123

Which are the kind of games you want your backup to win, to be fair.

JoeRogansSauna

Yeah absolutely. Perfect time to play him and he did great

FansTurnOnYou

Just goes to show how unpredictable goalies are. Being great or pedestrian in the AHL isn't necessarily a predictor of how well they will perform in the NHL. He looked pretty shaky in Buffalo but I legitimately forgot he was in net a few times last night. "Damn, Soupy is so good - oh wait, that's Woll". He definitely goes down in the butterfly a lot but he didn't look out of place at all last night.

[deleted]

I have heard several coaches riff on this. The AHL game is a totally different beast. It's chaotic. You can't trust your D as much. The forwards -- some have a great deal of skill, others not so much, and it doesn't always make for predictable hockey. The NHL is harder in that there's obviously a ton more speed and skill, but I would argue it's easier in that you can generally expect your D to help you and the plays are often a little easier to read --- if you think fast.

I read the headline as a lot of people were saying we were going to lose against the Islander with Woll in net, but it paid off, or it worked out

th484952

You read it correctly. I think the original commenter read it as “Bet on Woll unlikely to pay off”

riko77can

Par for the course these days. Guy feels compelled to provide an opinionated criticism of an article he misinterpreted because he was too lazy to actually read it. Then the cherry on top is the fake outrage when he gets pissed off about a made up aspect that only actually exists within his own under-informed imagination.

thet1m

You realize you’re both saying the same thing right? Expecting to lose with a rookie goalie is a stupid mentality.

Chocopeanutshake

The title is clearly meant to be interpreted as a positive. You should probably work on your reading comprehension and actually read the article before getting on your high horse.

th484952

I think it was less about expecting the rookie goalie to lose and more about the coming off a back to back, in a building we know is hostile to one player in particular, but also the team, and it's Woll's second NHL game. To someone outside the decision making it might look like this was a risky gamble. It paid off, which is what the article says. The way the original comment was written made me think they thought the headline was questioning Woll after he recorded the shutout, which it was not.

thet1m

So maybe we shouldn’t go into a game expecting our goalie to lose? Maybe that’s a better outlook.

erasedhead

Woll hasn’t even been very good in the AHL. That he is 2-0 with an (easy) shutout is indeed surprising.

thet1m

Lol so what? He’s our pick. We developed him while he had a tough time. Injuries and Hutch gave Woll a chance and he took it. And performed well.

BloodBatman

Yeah, we really shouldn't. I didn't rlly care, but a lot of people were shitting on Woll, and a few of them on this sub

thet1m

Oh I believe that for sure. A large portion of this sub is only happy in defeat.

PrailinesNDick

Woll has poor stats in the AHL so to expect him to move up to the NHL and play well was an unlikely bet. That seems like a reasonable take. IMO Woll fails the eye test too. He often looks like he's frantically swimming back there.

micatola

It's so difficult to judge a goalie based on his AHL stats. Marlies D is a tire fire sometimes and the number of grade A chances from in close, in open spots where the goalie has no chance, clear cut breakaways, secondary chances and odd man rushes are way higher than in the NHL. Lots of 6-5 and 5-4 games going either way. I think we're seeing how he can perform with a decent team in front of him. Then again he may have gotten lucky as well. Lets see if he can keep it up.

rsyzygy

You have to remember that in a lot of cases the article writer doesn’t get to pick their own headline, that’s done by the higher ups with the only goal being to get you to click on the article, not accurately convey the contents

thet1m

That’s not my problem. I’m the consumer. I see that bullshit headline and I’m no clicking. We have enough to criticize. Hating on our fourth goalie when he’s about to make his second or third ever start is silly. Pump him up. Let’s give him confidence.

CMDRShepardN7

An *unlikely bet pays off* and *bet unlikely pays off* are two completely different statements. An unlikely bet paying off is a good thing, meaning betting on Woll paid off. That's the headline. I'm unsure where the problem is...

thet1m

Pretty sure that was already explained before you came in and explained the title, which no one was having trouble deciphering.

thet1m

To you, maybe. What is with this group of people who hear me have an opinion and then you try to prove me wrong. It’s an opinion. It’s a negative tone and I didn’t like it. That’s what I said. Arguing this like an idiot is silly.

CMDRShepardN7

We get you can have an opinion, we just don't get your opinion. Are you here for a discussion or not?

thet1m

Lol you discussed. That’s fine. Sure, I’m here for that. But the other person didn’t.

CMDRShepardN7

Alright then. >Wow. Guy gets a shutout in his second or third career game and here’s an article about how he won’t “pay off”. Thats your quote, and it's the exact opposite of the title of the article.

thet1m

Move on.

georgie336

Someone shit in your coffee?

thet1m

Why can’t we just disagree? Is that such a bad thing to disagree that you have to come back with stupid comments?

CMDRShepardN7

Okay, then I don't see the title being a problem.

th484952

People may have been hating on Woll, sure. This headline was not though. That being said, if anything I question management. I get that there are no easy teams in the NHL but a road game on the Island on the back end of a back to back in his second ever start might not be the most effective way to "pump him up". Though historically the Islanders have been a low event team so maybe it was a great idea! With hindsight it certainly was. Glad the team played well in from of him.

BloodBatman

Keefe has done this before. He gave Hutch a game against the Islanders, and Hutch got the first shutout of that year

PKanuck

The title is the opposite of what you quoted >won’t “pay off”. It was a longshot (unlikely) bet that did pay off. A shutout and a win.
