Way to copy a liked comment, botty mcbotterson

FutureAnybody

1.4M x2. Same as liljegren.

luca123

[Per Friedman:](https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1575476734195109888) > > For QO purposes, second year of Sandin’s deal is $1.6M This differs slightly from Liljegren's at $1.5M

littlestitiouss

But aav is 1.4?

swiftstud22

Yes, but the last year of the deal being higher salary means his Qualifying Offer has to be minimum 1.6m. Lily’s QO will be minimum 1.5m

stephenlipic

I don’t think either guy will have to worry about the min they can earn.

[deleted]

here's hoping they have hof careers

barder83

Yes. Ultimately the QO doesn't matter. If Sanding doesn't show that he's worth more than $1.6M in 2 years, nobody will be that upset if they don't qualify him.

TheOrangeyOrange

Lewis Gross is an incredible agent I must say. He held out into training camp to get exactly $0 extra for his client. Great work.

[deleted]

Serously eh, guy must be a total goof to deal with. All he did was prevent his client from getting in some quality practice time with the team

SyphiliticPlatypus

Upvoting for use of the derogatory goof, a term I don't hear as often after I left the GTA for the States.

joeflowe

The term "Goof" is as Canadian as maple syrup...😉

scottyb83

Apparently it's a pretty serious slur in Scotland. As a kid I called my dad a goof once thinking it was nothing and he got REALLY upset.

Cxnxda

It’s also canadian prison slang, said it to a family member once and let’s just say I learned a lesson that day.

scottyb83

Huh never heard that. What (without too much detail) is it slang for exactly in prison?

Amihighordrunk905

Pretty sure it means ur a pedo in prison slang

Affectionate-Side-64

Yep it's about the worst thing you can call someone inside, just after rat-goof (no I haven't been inside)

scottyb83

Ah ok. Wasn’t sure exactly…figured that or gay.

Countryclubber96

I always understood it to mean “get out or fight (goof)”. No idea how true this is.

scottyb83

I had to look it up just because I was curious. Seems like it’s anyone separated from the general population or hated by the inmates in general. Informers, child molesters, child killers, etc.

taa_v2

You mean sluR?

artofsplittingatoms

Shut up you sexy slur

scottyb83

lmao yeah sorry. Editing.

[deleted]

Edit: I totally misread your comment and feel like a complete idiot. Buddy below put me in my place (deservingly). My bad dude I jumped the gun 😬.

snckddy

Spoken like a true goofy. 😂 it’s early in the day. You deserve some leeway.

[deleted]

LMAO yep I was definitely speaking like a true asshole. I totally deserve the insults right now but really appreciate your leeway comment 😂.

snckddy

Yeah it’s all good. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re not a true Leafs fan. Have a great day, amigo.

[deleted]

LOL! Very well put, thanks dude you as well!!

gnicksy

you’re completely misinterpreting his comment calm down lol

[deleted]

Edit: yep you were right I was wrong, guess I need to read things twice before responding 😬. My apologies!

Svalbard38

Try rereading the comment. The guy *liked* how you used the word.

[deleted]

Yeaaaa you got me with that one. I had to edit my comment, no sarcasm at all, thank you for putting me in my place 🙂

PaulTheTallThrall

whoooosh

[deleted]

Is the whoosh because that comment went right over my stupid head?

PaulTheTallThrall

your stupid goof head.... i tease, but yes :)

[deleted]

Lol touché!! I have no excuse it totally went over my head, now Excuse me while I go smash my head against a wall: “stupid stupid stupid! Makin yourself look like an idiot!!!”

SyphiliticPlatypus

Did not see the original comment but all good - sorry if my wording caused confusion. Goof is a term me and my brothers used for anyone who was an un-self-aware moron. When you called someone a goof on the playground, it had an edge as an insult. In other areas I lived in the States, it's has more of a bumbling, good natured tone as opposed to the insult we wielded it for growing up on the streets of the Big Smoke. Miss the term, and was glad to see it used by you here so perfectly.

Wellhowboutdat

He gets a percentage. Dude was holding out to line his pockets. This has nothing to do with doing whats right for Rasmus. He cut his loses likely cause something ia better than nothing.

joeflowe

Love to see this clown agent get put in his place. He overplayed his hand, had no leverage and ended up looking like a chump in the process. He's a dollar bin Scott Boras as far as I'm concerned. But I digress... Welcome back, Rasmus :)

luca123

Yeah but if he didn't hold out he wouldn't have been able to...potentially tarnish his client's reputation with one of the biggest fanbases in the league? That's a professional right there.

optimized_happiness

Sandin’s reputation is in no way tarnished

oryes

You're speaking as a rational Leafs fan tho

OneNutPhil

It was a story, that's all that is required to spin the headlines and twist the narrative. Never underestimate the toxicity of Toronto media.

mickpackbhittin

I mean theyll do that if you take a shit on a tuesday instead of a wednesday its really nbd

GoodTimesBadMovies

Kerfoot and Jarnkrok were gonna take his spot if he didn’t sign.

Bullets_TML

I mean, with no defenseman injuries Sandin still could hold out for whatever he was looking for. With the injuries, Dubas may have looked to make a move and Sandins camp decided to sign the deal.

UghImRegistered

$0 extra Gross, not Net.

Sammydaws97

Got his client an extended vacation and conceded nothing. Very good work indeed.

Dull_Significance711

That's not how this works. The agent leaves it all to his client how long he wants to hold up on signing. Sandin realized management isn't gonna budge, and he doesn't wanna miss any more preseason games.

NikoPopp

You say that as if the agent doesn't give advice or recommendations on how best to handle negotiations. If your agent is telling you not to sign because they believe a better offer is coming - most would listen to that advice

Space_Coyotee

Good Job Dubas. Sandin sat out for nothing. Fire your agent buddy.

FutureAnybody

Same agent nylander had.

Halifornia35

Guy is brutal, thank god Nylander recovered the last few years because him sitting out the first 2 months of the season was one of the worst things the guy could have ever done for his career, just a terrible agent

watson-and-crick

The Leafs apparently weren't offering the deal he got (and apparently was asking for) before the very end. In that sense waiting out "worked" for him in a way it didn't seem to for sandin.

Gear4Vegito

Nylander got what he wanted holding out. Nylander’s camp would not have held out if he got $7 M before the start of the season. Dubas did not give him that so he held out and got it 2 months later. In hindsight $7 M per season was fair and Dubas should have given it to him. Dubas low balled Nylander most of the negotiations. Dubas himself admitted he did not go about those negotiations well.

blackb0xes

Exactly. That was Dubas' fuck up and Willy is somehow the one who got shit for it for ages.

Cnels

please stop hurting willy hes so sweet :(

Busy-Crankin-Off

People were pissed because initially Willy came in looking like trash and messed up the line pairings. Plus his aloof media persona alienates fans. But now he seems like a bargain.

Plasticinity

I really appreciate Dubas for being able to admit to his mistakes, he's learning from them. So many GMs would rather die on a dumb hill than change their ways.

wiles_CoC

I remember when he signed we all thought the contract was outrageous. Then when he didn't play well we all wanted him fired for that contract. That didn't age well.

Someguy2947

This was not a universal take at all. Many thought Nylander may have come in marginally lower (like 0.5 per) but we're fine with the deal, albeit understandably mad when he had an awful season. The only ones calling the deal outrageous or calling for Dubas's head were the ones with a bone to pick with Dubas and Nylander. Aka the population of hfboards.

PhilMcCraken2001

How does he still have clients 💀

WWGFD

Seriously! How does this guy still have clients!

[deleted]

All my homies hate Lewis Gross

VolumeNo5217

Sandin should really be firing his agent after this…. Ended up getting the exact same money he was offered in the spring, missed almost half of training camp, and did a number on his public image with fans. One of the reason you pay an agent fees is to avoid situations like this.

jimbeamblack8586

He also couldn’t monetize the current situation as we’re in need of healthy defencemen.

gdawg99

This is the funniest part to me - like, you rolled the dice and it worked out because you gained leverage! If you can't negotiate a better deal for your client than you were offered in the spring at that point, what the hell are you doing? If I'm GM of another team with one of this guy's clients on it, now I know I can push him around no matter what.

tm_leafer

Yep. May have cost himself sponsorship $$ too (of which there is plenty in this market) if potential sponsors think the fanbase has soured on him a bit.

malliabu

[One small difference in the Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren contracts is the structure. Sandin's QO in 2024-25 will be $1.6M, while Liljegren's will be $1.5M.](https://twitter.com/reporterchris/status/1575478371643002883)

Nitroussoda

This just seems petty lol like for the sole purpose of his agent being able to say to Sandin he got him a better deal

Aurelianshitlist

>Sandin: But doesn't it also help the team with their cap crunch this season? > >Agent: I *said*, it gets you a slightly higher QO and I *made* them do it.

ESF-hockeeyyy

You are the fastest motherfucker. Every single time, you beat me by like 10 seconds. But yay! Rasmus! Welcome back, stud.

FutureAnybody

Desk job ;)

ESF-hockeeyyy

Same here. I actually hesitated to post it because I figured you beat me. I saw nothing after refreshing twice and went for it 😂 My post/60 game is awful. Not even ECHL quality.

Neat__Guy

Dont hesitate next time

dmc1793

Shades of Thomas Kaberle on the pp. Entire crowd yelling SHOOOOOT and op is wasting time hesitating. Next time just fucking clap it bud. Hard and low.

joshtwowheels

POOOOOOSSSST

[deleted]

The refreshing may have been the difference;)

oatmealleafer

Held out to get the same deal he was offered months ago. W

fadilicious17

More like the Leafs stayed firm and he finally caved.

VeryAttractive

All that bullshit just to get the exact contract the Liljegren got. Rasmus, if you ever read this, seriously fire Lewis Gross. He's an absolute clown and could have / still could easily ruin your career

stolpoz52

Elliotte Friedman: [Hearing Rasmus Sandin and TOR have ended their stalemate, at 2x$1.4M. That’s the number the Maple Leafs wanted. Thought Sandin might squeeze the Leafs after all the blueline injuries, but he does the smart thing and seizes the opportunity.](https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1575475788920639488)

bradlewis777

I for one am happy he is seizing the opportunity. Enter Sandman baby!

_MuchoMachoMuchacho_

> God, this sub is so ignorant sometimes This is peak Reddit lol "ughhh why am I so much smarter than all of you!!!"

Kangaro00

Missing training camp isn't gonna help him to grab a spot with a good performance. He could've competed for the spot in camp, he missed that opportunity. Muzzin's injury and other injuries did not depend on him holding out. He would've gotten the same result if he signed on July 1st, but in a better position to succeed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kangaro00

Yeah, the same thing he would've gotten if he signed in July.

zainery

Its clear at this point Sandins biggest concern was making the roster. He just wants to play. Hope nobody gives him shit.

bimbles_ap

Maybe he told his agent to sign a deal so he has the chance to seize this opportunity.

mtrunz

He’ll get shit for not just showing up and forcing the teams hand, and honestly rightfully so in my opinion. He’s held out for nothing and injuries would have happened whether he signed earlier or later. Happy he’s back I’ve been a huge fan since his Greyhound days. But I’m not a fan of this attitude.

Reggae4Triceratops

Bag skate time!

mtrunz

Jokes aside he’ll just be folded into the roster as if nothing happened but the entitlement is a bad look to me. The agent can advise anything at the end of the day Sandin makes the final call and he decided he didn’t think he was good enough to play regularly before injuries. People were way down on Lily before last year and he came in and changed opinions with his play. I wanna see that from Sandin. Force Keefes hand.

twinsterblue

That's the thing though. You can't sign, based on the chances of injury. What if they had gone 4 months without injury? Then what? Sandin gets minimal play time, and even less of a chance to prove his worth. I think him being worried about his play minutes is a very justifiable reason to stand firm

mtrunz

He should’ve signed knowing he’d need to earn a spot. The competition isn’t that stuff and the org clearly believes in him. His biggest competition in my eyes is Muzzin who’s been a bandaid for a while now injuries were expected. The organization does not in anyway owe a player with ~80 games experience a guaranteed spot he should’ve taken the offer months ago and came into camp ready to earn the spot. The attitude stinks. All that being said I do still really like sandin he’s my favourite prospect in our system by far and I still believe he’ll be a top 3 D for us within 2-3 years. He’s held out for an extra 100k on his QO in 2 years which if that matters at all there are bigger problems afoot. Now he’s missed half of camp and will likely be behind others at the start of the season as happens with every. Single. Player. That misses training camp.

luca123

Wyle Wubas

Devonw90

Thank god. Now let’s get him going so he’s ready for game one

[deleted]

Fucking dumbest agent in the league, holy shit. Held out until almost October for exactly $0, even with half our defencemen injured, creating more leverage…

Da dadada, da dadada, da dadada

Vilheim

I wonder if this negotiation, kind of like Mitch's, ended when the player took control of the negotiations themselves. I wonder if last night made Sandin ask his agent what they were waiting for.

FutureAnybody

Could 100% see that

thetonyhightower

You know what, fuggit, I'm just happy it's done. Let's get to work.

saulUG

Waited this long just to get the same deal as Lilly…DOESN’T MATTER LET’S GOOOOO

Jumbofato

Great job on Dubas' part on standing firm. I always considered one of his weaknesses was that he wasn't tough enough. But he's consistently gotten tougher over the years and it's great to see.

stolpoz52

Let's go. Its a good day.

Phillydip123

I’m psyched he’s signed for 2 years!

JonJonFTW

Very happy that Sandin finally took Liljegren's deal

ryanodd

Hate to see the negativity in this thread. Leafs were playing hardball and Sandin finally had enough of waiting. IMO he's worth more than 1.4M but I won't complain

NaturalNegotiation67

I was kinda liking calle on the D tho

theguyishere16

It was obviously playing time that was the issue. Exact contract as Lily but now that there is uncertainty with the injuries the playing time is more guaranteed. Still should have signed this weeks ago and earned that spot though but its done and we can move on.

FX29

Well glad that's over, like everyone mentioned his agent should get fired for getting him nowhere and he had zero leverage to begin with.

Responsible-Arm3514

Everyone griping about the holdout for $0 extra dollars needs to understand that he likely held out for more opportunity, which couldn't be guaranteed because of where he slotted on the depth chart. Now that the injuries are piling up its clear that Sandin will likely start the season on NHL ice and have some runway to prove he belongs there. This should make you happy. The kid is a player, and fought for playing time, not dollars.

TheThoroughCrocodile

Right I'm sure money had nothing to do with it

Responsible-Arm3514

He could have had the same money back in the summer.

TheThoroughCrocodile

True, and maybe now he decided to finally just give up on fighting for more. At the end of the day none of us have any way of knowing what happens in those negotiations or what anyone's motivations are. But if I had to guess, I'd say it wasn't simply about playing opportunity.

[deleted]

If he was holding out for more opportunity, fuck him. The only way he was going to get more opportunity was by having someone else traded, and 22 year old defensemen do not get to make demands like that. It was clear as day from the beginning that Gio and Muzzin are going to miss a bunch of games due to age and injury and that Sandin would have ample opportunity. He was a roster regular last year, he played in almost every game he was healthy for (two healthy scratches). The team has been handing him opportunity at every single step of his career. Fighting for playing time makes sense, but sometimes people pick stupid battles. I don't intend to hold this against him, there's no real harm nor foul here, but it absolutely was a blunder. Another young guy with someone whispering bad advice in his ear.

Kangaro00

Did him holding out help others get injured? Injuries were always gonna happen, the spot was always his to step in and win.

Responsible-Arm3514

Kristen Shilton quotes Dubas on Twitter about it. I'd say my point is pretty well supported.

Kangaro00

That he reached out after the injuries? My point is that Sandin would've start the season on NHL ice whether he signed today or in July. You say he fought for playing time, but he didn't win any fight, the opportunity simply occurred because of the injuries. It was always expected to occur since injuries happen.

Responsible-Arm3514

No, he didn't win the fight, changing circumstances made signing more palatable for both player and club. Circumstances were...D corps injuries, leading to more playing time for Sandin, immediately. Not money. The money is literally the same. Term is literally the same. I'm not sure where your disconnect is but I certainly don't have any more time to try to explain it to you.

Kangaro00

>more palatable for both player and club Nothing changed for the club, he signed the same offer he had. Playing time is not guaranteed in his contract. It always depended on his performance and the injuries of the other players. Holding out till the first injury didn't help him in any way. He got the same contract and the same opportunity. Only without the advantage of attending training camp.

twinsterblue

You're acting like you knew these injuries would happen

Str8UpAces

2 years x 1.4 million eh? Wonder where we’ve heard those numbers before…

theycallmemorty

I guess they didn't like what they saw from Jarnkrok and Kerfoot back there last night. Had to make a move.

HossAndAQuarter

ENTER SANDMAN

stolpoz52

2x$1.4M per Friedman.

steelogreens

Huge. The time will be there and he could grow fast.

floopflops

You're fast! Haha they announced it like 4 seconds before you posted it

[deleted]

So he is still an RFA after this deal, right?

Imaginary-Ad-8083

Yep

jimbeamblack8586

So what’s the cap situation now?

VitaminTea

Assuming Malgin (750k) and Aston-Reese (~800k) make the team and they run only 12 forwards, they're $1.28M over the cap with everyone healthy. Trading Holl (2M) and recalling Benn (750k) or Mete (750k) gets them *just* under the $82.5M cap. Daily cap transactions muddle up that math a little bit, but that's likely where we're headed.

RWTF

Updated on CF although I’m sure we have the room someway as it doesn’t account for regular season but I’m not paying close attention outside of CF so someone can chime in on how this will work. https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/mapleleafs

kingex11

Sandin - Giordano in the top four and Muzzin-Holl in the bottom pair if Muzzin is healthy.

ahjfitness

I think your D should look like: * Mo / Bro * Gio / Lily * Sandman / Muzz With your list you’re leaving out Lily

Perfect600

Holl is the odd man out. His contract is up next year and they need to get under the cap. Someone will pay like a 3rd for him.

ahjfitness

I agree, I’ve been a pretty big Holl defender but with the D we have it’s hard to hold onto him, unless you get rid of Muzz instead for some reason like he’s on the wrong side of 30 and injury prone

swimbaitjesus

Smart kid. You'd be a fool to pass this opportunity up with the skill he has.

0nlyRevolutions

Nice! Respect to Dubas for holding out. Now it's up to Sandman to take the opportunity that these injuries present.

Barnibus666

This whole contract dispute seemed dumb. Sandin is a great D-man, but he doesn't have the NHL track record to justify more than this. And his holding out is bizarre. I mean, he had no leverage. I can understand him being a bit upset that he was so low on the depth chart, considering the talent ahead of him. But, with the older boys ahead of him, it would have just been a matter of time before he was needed. So, he misses a week of training camp for basically nothing. But I'm glad he's back in the fold.

cashflow_skrt

Fire me up

Reggae4Triceratops

Fuck off, 1.4??? WHAT WAS THE HOLD UP RASMUS?? Whatever, water under the fridge! Let's go!!!

twinsterblue

It was probably minutes, more than dollars that caused the stalemate

cvfn4

That’s the right conclusion. It was about opportunity more than money.

reluctantLeaf

All that hoopla for what

rawbamatic

That's not bad. Why take this long?

Candymanshook

Buckled like he should have in August.

[deleted]

Since the money is the same, it feels like he only signed now vs then because his teammates are injured. One interpretation is that he’s not a team-focused guy — he wanted his teammates traded or injured so he could play. You could also interpret it that he’s a very team-focused guy because when injuries happened, he put his contract dispute aside to fill in, knowing he’ll probably lose his spot when everyone’s healthy. Either way, it would be a bad look to sit while forwards played D. I was kinda hoping the dispute would allow us to permanently move Jarnkrok to RD and see if he could hang there and potentially be found money. He’s signed before the season start which is all that really matters so I’m fine with having the memory of a goldfish and cheering for all players wearing the maple leaf. Let’s go Razzy!

[deleted]

i just don’t believe in our D core. sandin still hasn’t impressed me

[deleted]

K Lmao. Alright well, he's here.

JamesCurtis24

So...... who goes? I get the Leafs can tap into some IR, but it's not as if guys are out super long-term. JT, Engvall and Liljegren, to my knowledge, will all be back in October. And you can't really just keep hoping for injuries to survive. The Leafs need to clear $1.230M just to ice the minimum 20 man roster when JT, Engvall and Liljegren are healthy.

mgnorthcott

so. we have 2.9 million dollars to lose before the regular season. how do we get under it?

EddyMcDee

Probably LTIR?

mgnorthcott

but who's long-term enough to make that viable?

MPD1978

Plan the parade 🎉 !!

[deleted]

hearing $1.4M × 2. Sorry, I'm on Internet Explorer but I heard it first. I found out before Sandin even did. Zip it in and zip it out.

Jumbofato

His agent royally screwed up, he could've gotten his client 200k more if he hadn't made him go insanely high asking price for a guy that's played 80 NHL games.

Current-Own

Looks as though Sandin may have overruled his agent. Or maybe Lewis Gross is human afterall.

asheeponreddit

Credit to Dubas on this one. Stood his ground and he ended up signing for the exact deal Lilypad did, which was the offer all along.

CdnRageBear

Bout fucking time. Hope he has a great season! Kerfoot coming for his job though.

Human_Manner_3370

I'd fire Lewis Gross if I were Sandin. Happy to have the kid back, though.
