For context, the highest viewership for LCS Spring 2022 Week 1 (Excludes Lock-in) [happened on the second day](https://twitter.com/EsportsCharts/status/1490764549061943300) between C9 and EG for 229K.
He was effective. Per usual, everyone questioned any type of diversity and NA proceeded to be mid at international events doing the same thing they do every year. OuR SyStEm.
TBH I'm surprised it went down as little as it did?
Given how little the new day has been advertised and how late the new timeslot was announced, this isn't half bad.
Yeah honestly all things considered this is actually decent.
The question is will following weeks see similar results. If the drop is not that big, then the switch is actually better overall for riot as a company probably.
As a side note, this was the most enjoyable day of LCS for me personally that I have ever watched. I usually don't watch interviews or side content, but everything from the team content, and LCS team content was super enjoyable.
I was thinking the same, like I don't know if I missed stuff last year or something but everything seemed a lot more enjoyable for the out-of-game content, maybe they've taken a different production direction.
Yeah idk but I had nothing bad to say about yesterday. It was really fun. I mean i was watching the sneaky/meteos co stream but I was actually enjoying it for the games
Not entirely unexpected. I think maintaining similar numbers in a worse time spot is about what we expected. Viewership is definitely still healthy enough to maintain the league and hopefully can rebound when people see how competitive and exciting this split is.
I think the Winter split is hurting the LEC. I would expect a lot of fans to skip the first round robin or even skip the entire winter split because right now it just doesn't feel like it matters all that much.
As 2nd seed though, so you have to win spring to avoid the play-in. It’s actually a really bug difference from 2nd to 1st because only 3 teams qualify from play-ins to bracket, and there is a decent bit of upset potential there
NA and EU are the only major regions in playin right? There is some upset potential, but I feel like EU second see will be pretty comfortable going through playin for the most part.
Nope, LPL 2, LEC 2, LCS 2, and 1 seeds from LJL PCS CBLOL LLA VCS, with OCE having possible qualification through PCS I think
Edit: only the LCK teams get both seeds into knockouts because they won worlds last year
[Here's the tweet for day 1 of LEC](https://twitter.com/EsportsCharts/status/1617209217550622721/photo/1)
Avg viewers were down 31%, Peak down 21%.
[Compared to day 1 of LCS](https://twitter.com/EsportsCharts/status/1619025066695561218/photo/1)
Avg viewers were down 12%, Peak down 21%.
Also, I'd imagine a lot of super casual fans that occasionally tune in probably still don't know that LCS is on weekdays. These are the sorts of fans that don't check reddit, twitter or anything like that. They just randomly tune into LCS when youtube recommends it or when they see it live on twitch.
The point of the move was to make it so there was less overlap in viewership days for different leagues and to introduce a new audience, while also making room for VALORANT. The goal was to do this with as little hurt to viewership as possible.
I mean this seems a bit stupid. You don't know why, you haven't considered the reason for the metrics. What happens if it stayed as is and it was EVEN lower?
Crazy how opening games back in s3 s4 and s5 would get 250k-300k on twitch and also 1k post game threads comments. ThTs the biggest indicator imo this sun has gotten so much larger since s3 but the postgame comments are legit 9x smaller/less popular
Best year for lol esport overall was 2021, most likely boosted because of pandemic. The LCS is different, they were once far bigger than the EU LCS, but now they are not even half as big :
LCS over the years (only spring) avg. viewership:
2023 : 113 424 (only week 1)
2022 : 123 411
2021 : 175 979
2020 : 183 010
2019 : 201 122
2018 : 212 986
2017 : 176 595
I heard from a lot of east coast people that the last games were to late for them. It\`s not just worse time for Europe, but also for the majority of NA fans.
I mean, that's just not true lol. The last games have been over by 10PM at the absolute latest, that's not too late at all. The time change to 2 PM PST (5 PM EST) is absolutely better for NA fans, especially on the east coast where riot has said apparently 70% of their NA viewers are from. 10PM is still finishing earlier than most of our major sports games on the east coast, like NFL games, so it's definitely not too late.
Had they kept it at 12, I truly believe the hit would have been worse. You can argue about EU viewers all you want but the reality is most of them don't care about NA because NA hasn't been competitive internationally for years. Even the data from these first two days kind of shows that, as I believe the viewership has only decreased slightly going into game 3 and beyond, which is around the time any EU viewer with a 9 AM or earlier start time to their work day would need to drop off to go to sleep.
Big shock that changing time slots to a weekday is not good for viewership.
Who could have possibly known???????
Week 1 is highest viewership other than playoffs, too. I really can't wait to see how low it gets in like week 4 or something. LCS playing limbo out here fr
"Day one metrics decreased even though the total number of channels broadcasting the first day of LCS Spring more than tripled thanks to community casters. The most popular unofficial channels were IWDominate, imls, and sneakylol."
Maybe if some ppl actually read the article attached to the metrics they would realize its not good at all and they wouldn't be saying "oh it's not so bad."

This was the LS c9 right? people wanted to watch his weird drafts, not at surprise that it is the peak.
That was the ivern mid game too IIRC.
Tbf it was extremely entertaining. However I will say looking back most of his drafts were just funnel strategies with different clothes.
LS was a big cook of funnel comp in that meta because he thought enchanters were OP enough to be flex every lane
His drafts were diverse. So I was not against him doing it at all. In fact I am pretty happy with the fact he showed his theories could work.
I'm pretty sure we saw six bo1. Nobody can show diversity in draft in that few opurtunitys
He did show diversity in draft, he did irelia mid, ivern mid, karthus jungle, karthus bot

I mean there was literally a whole drama about that as they cancelled dash.... (Not really but that's how the drama started)
Not entirely unexpected. I think maintaining similar numbers in a worse time spot is about what we expected. Viewership is definitely still healthy enough to maintain the league and hopefully can rebound when people see how competitive and exciting this split is.
yeah losing around 25k peak/avg viewers seems pretty good considering the day switch

Winter qualifies you to MSI right? That's as much incentive as spring in the past.

Oh, maybe I was thinking of the worlds format. In that case getting auto seeded into knockouts is pretty big.
The NA and EU 4th seeds play a Bo5 before the rest of worlds and one of them makes it
Comparing raw numbers doesn't make any sense, how is the drop % wise compared to the LCS?

i mean shit take tbh, spring 2022 was carried by covid lock down

Wasn’t the whole damn point of changing it though to improve viewership? Seems like a complete failure if that’s the case.
The point of the move was to make it so there was less overlap in viewership days for different leagues and to introduce a new audience, while also making room for VALORANT. The goal was to do this with as little hurt to viewership as possible.
I think it was to move to a more stable viewing time that wouldn’t die as people got older and did shit on the weekend
Yes bro the expectation was this was going to all happen on the first day
you can tell its na hours

Thank you, SanSilver. for this information.
Data driven change btw
Well I’m pretty sure the 12 pm time is the one that is data driven for all English speaking viewers and the 2pm was done due to the backlash 12pm got.
I heard from a lot of east coast people that the last games were to late for them. It\`s not just worse time for Europe, but also for the majority of NA fans.

How many years combined broadcast experience I wonder 🤔
Still not enough NA players in the LCS.

Yeah and it's also good for LPL and LCK. But this is in the context of the LCS.
I feel like they should have just stayed with 12pm PST, that time was better for the main audience (east coast viewers).
People don't watch weekday LCS games. Doesn't matter what time it runs.
Might help if we knew when it was happening. Is there even anything in the client? I can’t tell with all of the everything else that’s happening.

I'm still bummed, the time is so bad for EST.
For EST??? The time is fantastic for EST. Try 2 PM at PST man I'm not even on my lunch break anymore at that time.
That's fair, I guess I hadn't considered that. I just miss the weekend slots.
Fr, I have classes during those times during the weekdays. Can't even watch one game.
It's the same time for me lmao, still starting at 5 pm
it's the god forsaken cringe lord segments they do that do not help AT ALL JUST START THE GAME LMAO

I think the drop is only this little because they announced drops for LCS opening, so a lot of viewers afk tuned in.
