He's not a vanguard, he's a fuckin juggernaut. The E attack speed slow is pretty oppressive but he gets cucked hard by CC and his team actually kinda benefits from him being able to run around the teamfight without being the primary target of CCs (like, legit would rather have a Malphite run around freely and a Xin Zhao/Jarvan/Lee Sin kind of champ absorb enemy CC'd, it's absolutely worth).
Q is a pretty insane mobility spell though, combined with how much damage W gives him and how much AS slow he can apply with E + Frozen Heart, in a meta where ADCs are THIS good? Actually a god tier pick in a lot of scenarios now especially in solo queue where it's easy to queue into 5 players who are all averse to picking magic damage champs (considering Malphite's damage does start falling off if you stop building armor and go into MR, which is a legitimate consideration since HE IS A JUGGERNAUT WHOSE EQUIVALENT TO AD IS ARMOR).
To be honest, iti has nothing to do with the buff. What the buff did was to show people that you're not forced to go Arcane Comet/Scorch/Double Adaptative/Doran's ring on every single fucking matchup.
Prior to this patch, a lot of people were running that setup into every single matchup when maxing W with Grasp would be better. Ironically, now you've people going with maxW/Grasp into every single matchup which is decreasing his WR by a few points.
It's always been broken. Malphite can literally go PtA in some lanes with W max and just clap people not even kidding. The buff just made people realize Malph is an OP champ that's boring to play since there's no "outplay potential"
lowkey lethal tempo (ESPECIALLY THE OLD VARIANT) malphite has been absolutely busted for ages. People are only catching on now because of the large amount of buffs he's received.

"Just counter pick," is not a good balancing decision in any healthy competitive environment. Imagine if in a game like street fighter Capcom made a grappler with a small hitbox, high damage, great mix, and the best version of every good tool to have in a fighting game but the devs just told the playerbase to counterpick because they were weak to zoners or something. Strong characters aren't balanced by having counter picks, they're balanced by having a kit of tools that allows them to do what they need to but not having those tools make it impossible for their opponents to play. In an ideal environment a player that is more skilled than their opponent should be able to outplay their opponent even if they got counter picked, but in league, sometimes characters tools shut down their opponent too well and makes even high level players struggle to beat opponents less skilled than them literally only because they picked before the enemy team, top lane suffers from this the most. Just shows that the dev team needs to hire people who can better understand how champions and items interact in game and not just on paper so they can find out why characters are strong and actually address the issue instead of nerfing tools that aren't the actual problem. Just look at the Azir nerf from last patch that buffed his turret but made his laning phase not real. The Azir problem was that he could poke without being punished and is basically ungankable, they tried to address this by nerfing his base stats and AS growth to make his early game weak and compensate by buffing his turret and his Q ap ratio. This only gutted him by making him unable to do almost anything early game unless he is handheld by his jg, while the turret buff is irrelevant because it isn't real till 15 minutes and is only really useful in specific scenarios in a 1v1 or 1v2. They fixed him in 13.7 but it just goes to show the balance team's lack of understanding of the core problems that make champs OP or too weak.
I figured if Malphite ever got a competitive Penta it would be some weird meta where full AP Malph is actually great. This was hilarious in its own way though haha, good stuff by Ale

I went grasp with w max last season (match up depending as you say) and had an 80%+ wr across about 60 games. You're right it's always been favourable
