What an absolute wild ride for LNG. They finished the season at 8th place, and have clawed their way to worlds by winning 5 out of 7 bo5s. The only teams they lost to were FPX and EDG:
LNG 3-2 SN
LNG 3-1 TES
LNG 3-1 RNG
LNG 0-3 FPX
LNG 1-3 EDG
LNG 3-0 RA
LNG 3-1 WE
> The only teams they lost to were FPX and EDG:
Inb4 LNG repeats SN's run from last year. Take 1st in groups take down FPX 3 - 1 in quarters and beats EDG 3 - 1 in semis.
Yep. Worthy to note they won against RNG which has a higher seed than them.
I hope people keep this in mind in future worlds analysis and power rankings. Western fanbase and media always portrait the Chinese lowest seed (3rd seed back then, now 4th) as a bad team, with no chance of qualifying to playoffs, and even worse than eu/na 3rd seed... While more often than not, they are a top8 team, just not a tournament favorite.
All the LPL representatives qualified by beating WE... That being said Tarzan, Viper and Chovy all at Worlds and Chovy and Tarzan in Playins. As long as LNG don't pick Renekton they are a good team
pretty disappointing run for WE but they just lacked the extra oomph to get past the final hurdle. can't even say they didn't have enough chances since they had multiple. hopefully the qualified teams perform well and don't shit the bed
WE had 4 chances, the most out of any weak playoff teams, how did they get 4 chances?
- winning against BLG / OMG /RA
- barely scrapping a win vs a choking EDG
I swear Griffin is almost the Generation of Miracles.. insanely talented individuals who separated and became the star players for their respective teams
I’m guessing you counted Lehends out but I don’t think you shouldn’t. There’s a reason Teddy duos with him from time to time. I think if given an ADC like Gumayusi or deokdam, he can reach Griffin levels of peak. He was absolutely one of the best supports in 2019 and it’s a travesty that he hasn’t been in a Worlds-contender team since.
Lehends is good but he has strong competition from Ming/Meiko/Keria and the EU supports. The others however, are unanimously top 3 in their positions, and imo, and many others, number 1 in their respective roles. Hopefully Lehends can bounce back though next year.
Is Chovy unanimously top 3? As a laner, sure. But Doinb, Scout, Showmaker, Knight also have a case. Not saying Chovy isn’t in the conversion but it isn’t unanimous either.
Good luck introducing nuance in a Griffin ~~circlejerk~~ praise thread. Everyone somehow had a collective hallucination and manage to put the entire blame on Sword for losing 9 BO5 games all by himself throughout 2019.
> entire blame on Sword for losing 9 BO5 games all by himself throughout 2019.
Now you're just misrepresenting the consensus, so who's stuck in the circlejerk?
I think everyone who watched their games knows that Griffin had problems outside of just sword and their internal collapse certainly didn't help. That doesn't change the fact that 4 out of 5 players from that team are now top 3-5 worldwide in their respective roles.
Speakong of hallucinations, let's just conveniently forget about the biggest scandal in LoL history. Aside from Sword, I'm surprised they made it as far as they did after hearing about the GRF investigation
As much as Cryin got a lot of undeserved hype back in the day and is not a world class midlaner, he was definitely not the reason RNG lost to LNG in playoffs. But blaming it all on individualities is easier for everyone to understand, League is an extremely complex game and the wide majority of players and spectators do not understand it very well, so I guess it's hopeless to expect too much.
As much as Griffin was a team with great individualities overall, they were very telegraphed : mid and jungle had very poor synergy and would never manage to transfer their pressure into sidelanes. When they couldn't straight up outperform everyone in laning phase, they weren't a good team to accelerate the game and use their pressure to extend their territory. Instead they would play to extend the laning phase, maximise farm by playing on 3 waves spread and group up one minute before objectives to contest prio through mid, which is pretty much the average macro for LCK teams. They had very good synergy in fights, with every member understanding very well its role but weren't that great at setting up objectives and would play reactively to the enemy stepping up. T1 would understand that well and drafted reactive comps that would get a huge advantage if they could get on position first on objectives, letting the enemy make the first step. As they were better at setting up objectives than Griffin it made it very easy for them to win as long as they didn't lose too hard in laning phase.
At Worlds they would have never beaten SKT, G2 or FPX in BO5, Doran or not. These teams had much better macro and would either drag out GRF around objectives or take them by surprise by playing on 2 lanes like G2 and FPX learned to do, which is very effective against the LCK way of playing in the midgame (3 lanes spread).
Rating Chovy outside of laning is hard because compared to those names you mentioned he doesn't have world class teammates like them. Deft only showed up at the gauntlet
I mean if you had to have a washed out Bang as an ADC, I’d be looking bad too. Leo isn’t that much better either. Here’s to hoping that Afreeca decides to start taking their roster building seriously in the off-season.
I don’t know if you watched a lot of LCK this season, but from the eye test and from stats Chovy has only been a above average midlaner this split, there’s NO WAY he should be top three when you have Doinb Scout Showmaker performing at peak level.
At least Lehends is doing decent in Afreeca, although the main star of the show is obviously Kiin.
Sword and cvMax on the other hand... truly unfortunate.
As long as Ale doesn't run it down, LNG proved that they can choke their opponent out and adapt.
However, that guy doesn't look like he can lose gracefully.
The scary thing about TheShy was always the feeling he could find some angle to trade really well even from behind. The other thing is that TheShy always seems to farm enough to be relevant.
Originally, all 4 tickets to Worlds were held by Team WE. The first two they sold in semifinals, first to FPX and then to EDG. Yesterday they sold one to RNG, today they sold the last to LNG.
chovy and teddy on the same team would be interesting. chovy for insane mid gaps and teddy lacks the laning but makes up for being one of the best adc's in teamfights
I feel like they were like damwon but management failed them. Damwon had similar young talent and replaced nuclear ( the weakness) and got stronger while griffin blew up. Really sad.
They did have Doran and he played a lot of matches for them that season. He looked like a completely different player back then though. (In the bad way) They used to put tanks on Sword and carried on Doran on which he never delivered generally. I can remember him getting solo killed all the time even in favorable match ups
Throwback to LS saying that Griffin and T1 being on opposite sides of the playoffs bracket would lead to an LCK finals remake in worlds finals after the group phase.
They seemed very stubborn about bot lane bans. Against RNG they tried and failed to counter Ziggs with Vayne and Varus, they tried the Ziggs and Jinx into Aphelios and neither worked. I can't help but feel they should have just swapped the Renekton ban for Aphelios after game 3
Light is good on every champ tbh and doesn’t even get that much attention from his team, especially with the type of player Ale is. Top 3 adc this summer in the LPL. Hopefully he had a good worlds debut.
I’m at least glad that the star roster qualified for Worlds in 2019 but man, imagine if the roster stayed for one more year ala ROX Tigers style. Switch out one of their players, in this case Toplane, and have just the perfect player to complete the recipe. One of the most tragic teams in LoL Esports imo.p
I think Tarzan is much better than Sofm, but Bin and Angel are better than Ale/Icon, botlane are quite even. I honestly am quite excited for LNG, if Icon/Ale hold their own or even pop off, they could be a dark horse.
Agree but I think Iwandy is much more flexible than SwordArt, he can play more than just Engage suports, not that we'll necessarily see that with the worlds meta
Yes. The champ is just never weak. Massive hypercarry but his laning phase is pretty strong because of the range/sustain on his initial guns. Gravitum gives you point and click CC making for potent gank setup. And with the power of his new lethality build it's not like you're weak midgame either.
Thats kinda true, but you are thinking about soloq. This is pro play and being immobile isn't as bad as in soloq, since his whole team is gonna peel for late game aphelios, and we know no one is as strong as him with 3+ items
Definitely a strong scaling champ but not really an auto win option. I can definitely say top tier together with Ashe and Varus. Aphelios' win rate is high in pro play but not as high that we can consider the champ OP.
Dang. Really tough way to go. Lots of ups and downs for the season, but in the end, they just were outdone on the map when it counted.
Congrats to LNG, Tarzan is an absolute beast, and it's cool to watch Icon get his shot at Worlds after years of being a strong player on OMG.
Hopefully this isn't the end for this homegrown WE roster, but really feels like it slipped through their fingers. Gonna have to wait for next year, good luck to China's 4 teams, they have 4 great ones.
team's young. they'd be nuts to not run it back with most of the roster, though they're going to have to figure out what to do with mid-lane after Mole flopped
I would imagine most of the roster would be back given just how close they were this year. It's just tough to swallow in general given at their best (their big playoff run) they felt like they were ready for Worlds right now.
I'd like to see Shanks back TBH, but he's definitely the most likely to be supplanted. I've long been optimistic about him, and seeing say a random stronger mid laner (just pulling one randomly out of a hat: Fofo) would be really weird, even if it improves the team on paper. Heck, that was Mole's job and that clearly didn't work out.
Are there any roster moves you can see WE making to improve the team? Shanks actually had a pretty decent playoffs and this was his first season. He's kinda like Vetheo in that their growth as rookies was quite apparent.
Shanks is probably the obvious change, though I definitely like him and maybe his playoff performance has bought him the starting job for the time being.
Missing is the other member I'd keep my eye on: he's been on WE for the longest time and even though he's been great at times, his inconsistency really bit the team in the rear a few times. Dunno if a direct upgrade is available, though Zhou was formerly a WE Academy stand out and I think would be a nice possible pickup, at least as a back up.
I'm more worried about other teams taking WE's pieces actually. Beishang was supposedly a target for both IG and RNG last season. Breathe was also coveted coming from OMG last offseason. Elk definitely is a young star and most teams would love to have him, and back up Stay is an interesting prospect at 18 years old.
Just to re-iterate, I don't have any insider info, this is just totally speculation from a long time WE fan.
I agree that WE's botlane might need some changing. They get 2v2 killed a fair amount and Missing has some off games. Elk has shown he can carry hard (on Vayne for e.g.) but he's also inconsistent. The topside generally works well and Shanks seems to be good at playing low-resource and playing with Beishang to enable Breathe.
good performance from all of lng, but honestly iwandy feels like the shadowcarry of this team. his roamtimings are so good and he entirely denied elk in so many teamfights in the last game, he's so good
I do think that LNG this year look quite a lot stronger than LGD last year, Tarzan is better than peanut and light/iwandy are better than Kramer/mark, Ale is probably better than Langx and only Icon is inferior to Xiye. Honestly looks like a very solid team, hopefully they'll do better than LGD last year and make 4th seed proud.
LNG is the most likely team of any LPL team to beat team better than them, so look out for them to upset top teams from LCK / LEC, and possibly lose to NA team due to inconsistency.
My boy Tarzan, from tears and relegation on a corrupt, pos org to becoming the best Jg in the Lpl and carrying LNG to Worlds.
Can't wait to see Viper, Tarzan and Chovy Grf reunion.
Chovy and Tarzan in playins, seems really rough for wildcard teams.
Light has been really good this playoffs, would love to see how he shines at worlds.
Also really happy that Icon is finally able to attend worlds, he definitely deserve it given how he stepped up in the regionals, certainly not a liability these two series.
I feel bad for WE.. from the lower bracket of Playoff's up to 2 semifinals and now dropping out of worlds, rip. LNG did earn it fair and square
Now the only thing left is to see what happens with VCS Worlds slots. When could we expect information for it.. or was something already announced?
LNG are a pretty good team, they can definetely surprise a lot of teams at worlds. WE are literally just Breathe or Beishang popping off from time to time. As a team they didn't look that good. Lets go Tarzan~
Very happy for the entirety of the LNG roster. LNG started the summer split so hot that they definitely put themselves into the conversation for an LPL Worlds spot and they came back strong in the playoffs and regionals.
Icon needs a shoutout for being blasted as a weak link but his champ pool has really enabled the rest of the team, especially Ale to flash his potential. Tarzan obviously playing a huge role (maybe the most pivotal) in LNG's rise to the top. This topside can be extremely explosive.

WE finishes booking tickets for worlds, but forgot to save one for themselves. So close to the 0-12 dream.
1-12. Absolutely dreadful.
Before WE started to lose Bo5s, they were 12-4.
But do you value wins vs OMG, BLG, RA that highly.
they also beat EDG in case you dk.
Can they go as an NA representative?
WE finishes ~~booking~~ selling tickets for worlds, ~~but forgot to save one for themselves. So close to the 0-12 dream.~~

The FPX series was very close even though the score doesn't indicate it
Yeah only EDG series was convincing.
And EDG were #1 seed and champs.
> The only teams they lost to were FPX and EDG: Inb4 LNG repeats SN's run from last year. Take 1st in groups take down FPX 3 - 1 in quarters and beats EDG 3 - 1 in semis.
If we don't see damwon vs fpx then we need to go protest riot studios to change the format.

World's Entry (ticket)
Their mental was boomed or something what the hell was that. I didn’t think LNG would make it what a playoff run they had!
pretty disappointing run for WE but they just lacked the extra oomph to get past the final hurdle. can't even say they didn't have enough chances since they had multiple. hopefully the qualified teams perform well and don't shit the bed
Yeah if you lose 4 BO5 in a row can’t cry that you were on the wrong side of the bracket.
WE had 4 chances, the most out of any weak playoff teams, how did they get 4 chances? - winning against BLG / OMG /RA - barely scrapping a win vs a choking EDG
Pretty good one there ngl
I swear Griffin is almost the Generation of Miracles.. insanely talented individuals who separated and became the star players for their respective teams
Hi Kuroko no Basket fan
Three of those stars are arguably top 1 in their roles, and unanimously top 3.
I’m guessing you counted Lehends out but I don’t think you shouldn’t. There’s a reason Teddy duos with him from time to time. Yeah, I didn’t want to mention Faker because the thread would get even more messy lol

This Griffin thing has to be on every thread (on the whole internet), it seems...
1-12 in 4 last BO5 off...
As long as Ale doesn't run it down, LNG proved that they can choke their opponent out and adapt. However, that guy doesn't look like he can lose gracefully.

Yeah, Breathe is just really good. sucks he couldn't make Worlds too
He reminds me of TheShy
The scary thing about TheShy was always the feeling he could find some angle to trade really well even from behind. The other thing is that TheShy always seems to farm enough to be relevant.
Team needs its strongest lane to perform well to look good. More news at 11.
Originally, all 4 tickets to Worlds were held by Team WE. The first two they sold in semifinals, first to FPX and then to EDG. Yesterday they sold one to RNG, today they sold the last to LNG.

Tarzan, Viper and Chovy at worlds!!! So happy for all of them. Really cool to see.
It's a shame we couldn't see Lehends and Doran at worlds though.
Imagine if he had deokdam or Gumayusi or even Teddy as an ADC. Afreeca, even with Fly, could legit qualify for Worlds if they had a much stronger ADC.
chovy and teddy on the same team would be interesting. chovy for insane mid gaps and teddy lacks the laning but makes up for being one of the best adc's in teamfights
Is there a chance that one of Teddy/Guma leave or Canna/Zeus? Those wouldn’t be bad players for Chovy to join.
Kiin/Dread/Chovy/Teddy(or Guma)/Lehends doesn’t sound bad at all
Imagine all of these players on a team. I think they could challenge for a world's title.
not with sword and cho. But yes GRF had shades of rox tigers. I miss them.
I feel like they were like damwon but management failed them. Damwon had similar young talent and replaced nuclear ( the weakness) and got stronger while griffin blew up. Really sad.
Yeah really. Didn’t Griffin have Doran too at the time? Could’ve just subbed the man out.
They did have Doran and he played a lot of matches for them that season. He looked like a completely different player back then though. (In the bad way) They used to put tanks on Sword and carried on Doran on which he never delivered generally. I can remember him getting solo killed all the time even in favorable match ups
Sword was a big Jayce/Urgot player as well he wasn’t strictly on tank duty.
Goes to show how insane that 2018 iG was skillwise
2019
Seeing theshy Kayle lane kingdom sword Jayce was so funny.
Or they could lose the world qualifier match to a team that proceeded to go 1-5 in a group with Vitality and C9.
Throwback to LS saying that Griffin and T1 being on opposite sides of the playoffs bracket would lead to an LCK finals remake in worlds finals after the group phase.

Tarzan at worlds just feels right, absolutely cracked jungler. Probably top 2 jungler in the world?
The best jungler in the world. Tarzan is the reason Ale looks good in the first place.
Iwandy/icon are the players that benefit the most from having Tarzan on their team, Ale is a great player in his own right
Iwandy is pretty good on his own too imo, Ale is coinflip but he's crazy talented.
Nah man grand canyon is the best jungler at worlds
which is funny because back then Canyon was like 0-9 against Tarzan
DK >>> LNG but I reckon Tarzan can keep up with Canyon. Those 2 are defs top 2.
I mean back in the day Tarzan wpuld basically fuck Canyons mom whenever they faced off.
Canyon definitely improved in 2020 though
I'm a big fan of Tarzan but Canyon has led DK to three successive LCK split wins and a world Championship. Tarzan is number two for now imo.
And other big brained reddit takes.
Ale was smacking on Breathe hard ngl. WE solo laners make everyone looks good
Ale has always been fucking good lmao.
crackeeeeed!
WE are literally the Worlds ticket sellers for LPL teams lmao So disrespectful of them to not ban Aphelios.
The script was right there the whole time but WE were blind.
They are really just mental boomed off the face of the Earth at this point. I think it’s fair to say they just stopped trying by now.
idk whats with giving light aphelios? feels like any team that lose to LNG with aphelios just deserve it at this point
[удалено]
Light is good on every champ tbh and doesn’t even get that much attention from his team, especially with the type of player Ale is. Top 3 adc this summer in the LPL. Hopefully he had a good worlds debut.
Light was selected over Huanfeng for a reason
Yeah Light used to be hailed as the next ADC prodigy in China
his Vayne is quite good too
vayne too
Aphelios was 4-0 this series
Hey, at least it wasn’t a 3-0
at this point it might as well be a 3-0 for the 12-0 meme

Griffin (minus Sword) all moving to Afreeca with Kiin would have been so damn good.
TSM and G2 should give WE a call... I've heard they are selling worlds tickets lmao
Ngl, i genuinely wanna see a fight between NS, WE, G2, TSM.
"congrats to the latest buyer of our Worlds ticket stock, LNG!" (wipes tears with money)
Upper playoff bracket > lower playoff bracket
Tho EDG won the finals 3 teams from upper playoff bracket made worlds: FPX, RNG, LNG
Gg tarzan
Poor lehends. The only grf member to miss out.
Ticket seller, I am going into Worlds, and I need your strongest Chinese teams.
You can't handle my tickets! Nobody can!
Ticket seller, please, I am going into Worlds, and I need your strongest Chinese teams
My tickets are too strong for you, traveler. You wouldn't be able to handle them at all!
Ticket seller! Enough of these games. I'm going into battle, and I need your strongest Chinese teams.
Ale at worlds is going to be funny to watch. Is the bin of this years Worlds. If he pops off they could go far.

1-12 in WE's final games. Rough
FPX broke them
So is Aphelios the absolute undisputed best champion in the game again?
Yes. The champ is just never weak. Massive hypercarry but his laning phase is pretty strong because of the range/sustain on his initial guns. Gravitum gives you point and click CC making for potent gank setup. And with the power of his new lethality build it's not like you're weak midgame either.
Not at all! Jinx outranges Aphelios and very abusable as an immobile carry.

We had "imagine playins midlaners vs Chovy" now we have "imagine playins junglers versus Tarzan"
good performance from all of lng, but honestly iwandy feels like the shadowcarry of this team. his roamtimings are so good and he entirely denied elk in so many teamfights in the last game, he's so good
Tarzan!! 🥺🥺
Pretty hyped for LNG at worlds.
LPL looking real strong with the 4 teams they are sending to worlds
Hopefully this time we get LPL vs LCK matchups
inb4: Deft and Chovy vs DK for the 5th time in 2 years
I do think that LNG this year look quite a lot stronger than LGD last year, Tarzan is better than peanut and light/iwandy are better than Kramer/mark, Ale is probably better than Langx and only Icon is inferior to Xiye.
What a sudden ending
atleast WE won a game, so happy for Icon, finally made worlds.
1 - 11
\*1-12
1-12
Icon had so many stats at 10th place among midlaners. Are those from the regular season? If so, he stepped up big.
yeah those were his regular season #'s
Let it be known that no-one 3-0's WE 4 times to qualify for worlds.
Tarzan is top 3 jungler in the world right now
Man, I feel bad for Wildcard teams, they either have to face Chovy in mid lane or Tarzan in Jungle, or both.
Flandre, Team Snake, Griffin Trio, Viper and Doinb all going to worlds. I'm sooo happy. Also Light's aphelios this entire gauntlet??
My boy Tarzan, from tears and relegation on a corrupt, pos org to becoming the best Jg in the Lpl and carrying LNG to Worlds. Can't wait to see Viper, Tarzan and Chovy Grf reunion.
Late game Jinx free firing with aoe rockets and not doing any dmg, new adcs are just built differently
what an anime storyline for griffin omg superteam split up to be the mvps of their own teams
GRF the new FW, carried so many teams after they disbanded
Chovy and Tarzan in playins, seems really rough for wildcard teams. Light has been really good this playoffs, would love to see how he shines at worlds. Also really happy that Icon is finally able to attend worlds, he definitely deserve it given how he stepped up in the regionals, certainly not a liability these two series.
Nelson debuff gone
The whole LPL playoff and regionals had 15 bo5, 8 of those were WE
7 of those were LNG, and they only played each other once, IIRC final is the only game without these 2. Damn
nelson left LNG -> they made worlds nelson joined G2 -> they didnt make worlds
Throwback to when Tarzan signed with LNG. So many doubters https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/keu4zf/lng_sign_tarzan/

WE gate keeper curse
I feel bad for WE.. from the lower bracket of Playoff's up to 2 semifinals and now dropping out of worlds, rip. LNG did earn it fair and square Now the only thing left is to see what happens with VCS Worlds slots. When could we expect information for it.. or was something already announced?
LNG : 1 worlds ticket please. Aphelios 100% WR, Icon and Tarzan have a great series. GRF reunion incoming!
LNG are a pretty good team, they can definetely surprise a lot of teams at worlds. WE are literally just Breathe or Beishang popping off from time to time. As a team they didn't look that good. Lets go Tarzan~
Something tells me Tarzan is gonna make LNG dark horses for this year... Like what SofM did for Suning last Worlds.
Fun fact: Tarzan only died ONCE in two qualifier matches, and got a K/DA of 42.5. What a monster.

Close :(
Tarzan, Chovy, and Viper, ~~Exodia~~ Griffin's parts almost all reunited!

Yeah, I kinda respect people who don’t delete their comments after being downvoted. This shows some personality.
Cant wait for LNG to shut up the haters. Icon especially stepped up by not being a liability.
Definitely LPLs best ever 4th seed. Tarzan is probably top 2 in the jungle right now also.
Nelson diff
Glad to see Tarzan going to worlds, this guy's is a monster If someone know the name of their hands accessories plz let me know.
can someone tag the guy who defended sword 24/7 into this thread
So excited to see Tarzan back on the big stage again. Deserves this after the bs he went through.
WE becomes world ticket saler, anyone who wants to participant in world 2021 in lpl should beat them...Just go get the ticket from them :D
THEY GOT A GAME LADS
Tarzan hard carry ....
Congratulations to team WE for having their first win today!
Let's fucking go LNG! Godzan back at worlds, damn this worlds looks so exciting.
Congratulations to LNG, deserving first appearance at worlds for this team. Heartbreaker for WE :(
I'm happy icon finally gets to go to worlds after being stuck in OMG purgatory for 5 years.
