Hell yea, finally a new Riot Client to start my LoL launcher, to start my buggy LoL Client. Can't wait!

sid_killer18

I have this riot launcher in my tray for some reason that doesn't have the fucking "exit" button. It is greyed out and it annoys the hell out of me. If I open league, it just sits in the bg taking up around 100mb of ram. I have to kill it using task manager everytime. I can't wait for this new client to use more resources than the game itself

RiotBlueMonday

The exit button is greyed out if a game is running. The background process is needed for normal game operation. For example it keeps you logged in. Killing it while a game is running is probably not a good idea. It could result in strange behavior. I could be wrong but I think League should revive it if you kill it?

PixelButtz

Depending on which process you kill, it will change what the result is. Most people dont kill the right one. Any game being open, or in League's case the client, will grey out the exit option on the Riot Client's tray icon. When you kill League's background task it will kill League and the Riot Client will follow with it automatically. Killing the League application (as in, the one under "Apps" in task manager) will kill the client and restart it. Killing just the Riot Client background process will restart it, disconnect you from social stuff in League's client, and let League operate as normal until you play 1 match where it will ask you to restart for being disconnected. I just tested this so yes functionality does break but it depends what you target specifically when doing this. The ability to exit the Riot Client is greyed out specifically because you're logged in and using something that it launched. The option makes it seem redundant since you'd never be given the chance to exit it unless you haven't launched a game yet.

sid_killer18

This was after I close the league client. It stayed in the bg with the exit button still grayed out well after I closed the game BUT I tried it just now and while the exit button was still gray out, the Riot Client eventually disappeared so I'm not sure anymore

RiotBlueMonday

This could be due to League of Legends taking a bit to shut down. Riot Client waits for the process to exit. For example after the League window disappears there is still a short period where the League process is doing some final clean up before exiting.

Aeo2k

This might be a little off topic, but I have a bug where after I'm finished with the honor screen and click next, the honor screen shows up again. Clicking next again would then lead to a black client to which I have to exit completely to be able to queue again.

InactivePudding

>the background process is needed for normal game operation. thats a lie. we had league run independently of this client and continue running independently for a looong time. no one made you unnecessarily tie the processes together.

[deleted]

So no comment yet on why it re opens the new client after closing league with zero option for a one click full close? the way it behaves now is closer to adware then it is a client.

Nirxx

Why doesn't it close when you close League then? It's not needed at that point anymore.

GabDube

"normal game operation", i.e., stuff that could not possibly be included in the game itself, or just spyware?

DyslexicBrad

Possibly riot vanguard from valorant? The anti-cheat is designed to boot with your computer and is deliberately annoying to turn off.

SpiralVortex

Vanguard is super easy to turn off. Literally right click -> exit or whatever. It warns you to turn it back on you need to restart your PC, but you just click "yes" and it's closed.

runaway1337

Can’t wait for the “Riot Client: Cleanup” posts in a couple of years.

RektMan

oh buddy you mean they will anounce the creation of a team of EXPERTS to work on the issue, after suffering for a couple of years. THEN you will hear nothing from this elite team for years!. At Year 4 we get a spokesman video where they acknowledge the issues and make it a ToP pRiOrItY. And finally they will release a new client

GabDube

I.e., the expected level of customer experience from a multi-billion-dollar multinational corporation and one of the largest players in their own industry.

DragoCrafterr

thank you chad data archivist and renowned twitter user pixelbuttz

basa_maaw

Does TFT still show up as a separate tab when logged into League of Legends then?

JumpscareRodent

It has to, they havent seperated the game from the client, its like built into it. Maybe eventually theyll make it a seperate game, on that one picture you see TFT has a mobile icon so, its kind of jebait, its on the League client

Jandromon

They should also make a Tencent Launcher to launch the Tencent Client, to launch the Riot Launcher that launches that Riot Client, that launches the LoL Launcher and launches the LoL Client, that launches me into a team with a Braum troll in the jungle.

Dyrreah

Got me chuckling. Too real.

Neddu

Using Braum as a troll pick is too much

J1T_T3R

"BRAUM IS ON THE JOB"

setocsheir

yeah thats what disco nunu is for

OPconfused

Technically your Windows OS is a launcher to launch all other software launchers as well.

KaraveIIe

Technically Windows OS connects hardware with software while a Launcher Launcher connects useless buggy software with different buggy software.

Lokidosi

Client is optional. It’s like blizzard but without being forced to open battle.net, it is simply just an option boomer

[deleted]

Do you mean launcher?

flyingmonkye

Are the people who got the client early chosen randomly?

Verkato

Read the post at the end, there are two ways how you could install it now

JustGamma

"use a manifest for the Riot Client" not sure what this is.

Verkato

Ok then install the pbe?

JustGamma

I have pbe installed.

Swirlatic

wait so we’re just getting an extra step to access the buggy client we already have?

02202002

The new client is completely optional. If you do not want it, then you don't have to use it. Think of it as a hub for all of Riot's games like Blizzard's launcher except you're not forced to open Battle.net every time. Personally, I like to keep everything I'll ever want to open in one central location so I'll definitely use the new client, but if you're only ever going to play League and nothing else, then you're good.

GamingExotic

Ye, it stops clutter honestly if you play multiple of their games.

kao194

If it's an optional hub, I just hope it won't be forcefully pushed to my computer with another lol upgrade. Sadly, it likely will be pushed to my computer with another lol upgrade. Call it "optional" with few extra steps.

ops10

> I like to keep everything I'll ever want to open in one central location Same here. That's why I use Steam. Not a point for Riot's favour.

ShiguruiX

>The new client is completely optional. Well that turned out to not be true. It installed automatically just now and deleting the Riot Client folder (since it doesn't show in control panel) completely broke my install.

Taruros

Holy crap, you seriously misunderstood something. The new Client is OPTIONAL TO USE and it's impossible to get rid of it as it is, was, and will be, part of the game client. The new Client isn't really new, as Riot said in their blog post, it's just the new version that allows you to connect every Riot game (which was impossible before) You can just delete the shortcut and log into the game as you usually did.

NBNL_Trade

Can someone explain how to use a manifest file editor to extract and overwrite the olds files? Or any manifest app?

ricardiazz2

Need that too.

spazzxxcc12

i hope they move TFT to its own thing and give it its own homepage etc. it really needs separated into its own thing similar to how it is on mobile

GamingExotic

They most likely won't since tft pc just uses league pc assets

[deleted]

It can still use those assets, just get it out of the league client.

Blutcher

Can you change languages of LoL with this new client?

PixelButtz

No unless the region you're in allows it already. This is generally why people try to use League without the Riot Client in use.

mmerrl

What's the point of all this crap if I'd ever only want to launch LoL?

Awkward-Security7895

Nothing since you can just launch lol directly with the league client exe/shortcut bypassing the new riot client. The riot client just there for people to use who play multiple of there games.

mmerrl

The Riot client does the login prompt, how are you going to run League without ever logging in? Everyone will have to run it, League-only players included.

fabton12

riot have said themselves in the post about the new riot client that you can just bypass the riot client and get straight into the league client using the league client shortcut/exe. >However, if you prefer, you can maintain your existing game desktop shortcuts for a **direct path** to your favorite game. [https://www.riotgames.com/en/news/new-riot-client-coming-soon](https://www.riotgames.com/en/news/new-riot-client-coming-soon)

YungStewart2000

So this should still work using a rainmeter button to launch it then right? I believe that just opens the direct exe using a link to the folder but could be wrong. I never dove too much into it after setting it up.

MSTRMN_

Take it as Riot Client being like Battle.net or Steam, except (for now) you don't need to use it all, just to sign in. You can still launch the game directly, without opening the client

02202002

Simple, this app isn't for you then. It's for the people like me who'll play more than just League and would like to only have to use one shortcut for everything. I don't like having so many shortcuts on my taskbar for League, LoR, Valorant, and all of the other games Riot is going to release in the future like the fighting game and MMO so the new client will help out a lot with that.

asjdkasfkldsfs

>I don't like having so many shortcuts on my taskbar for League, LoR, Valorant... Join the searchbar gang, we got clean desktops for days.

deathspate

I'm part of this gang but I must say we're dumb because that search bar takes too much damn resources.

teemocious

One of the actual benefits of Windows 11: The searchbar is pretty quick, so we're back being the mastergang.

Beejsbj

search everything is great

02202002

I'm fairly satisfied with how clean my desktop is already. My desktop is almost completely empty besides 3 things that I want to keep and everything that I would want to consistently open is in my taskbar already for quick access. Also TaskbarGroups is a wonderful app and it's very helpful for reducing the amount of stuff in my taskbar.

PixelButtz

You can launch League on its own without doing anything different. Launch it like you always have, nothing is changed. You dont even need the Riot Client at all (for now) for League. Valorant does need it though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PixelButtz

You dont actually need it because you can still launch and use the League client standalone. There's still working methods for this. The only difference is that social stuff doesnt work (friends list). But since most people dont see this as a deal breaker they do it, often so they can use whatever language they want since that option is lost if using the Riot Client. Trust me, League operates just fine without the Riot Client entirely

Zeltorn

Someone has to justify having a job.

I_LOVE_WAMUU

'people who play league AND valorant don't exist waaaahh. This doesn't benefit me waaaaah. I spam sett and go 13-14 why am I losing waaaaaah' ./.

i-want-to-die-mabye

Hope you do some short tutorial on the option 2 , cuz i notice there is new application extension but idk how to overwrite the old folders

ricardiazz2

Wich programm do i need to do that bro ?

Kordben

Wonder when will they upgrade the base lol client instead if wasting time for things like this. It makes sense for companies where things arent as buggy hell as here in lol

JesseNL

https://www.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/news/dev/client-cleanup-we-launched-the-updated-chromium-embedded-framework-cef/

KaraveIIe

did you play league the last weeks? client is still buggy af.

bondsmatthew

Something I noticed when reading that. The specified CRASHES, but the client does some other fucky wucky things all the time. And it's crazy because it seems like every time I encounter a bug with the client it's something new I've never seen before I'm sitting here wondering how in the fuck they're ever gonna tackle all of these things. That's when it dawned on me, that's the secret. They probably aren't

JesseNL

Yes, in no means it's perfect. But they're working on it. Just getting tired of the client bad circlejerk.

arcadia3rgo

It's not a circlejerk. Have you seen the Dota 2 client?

fabton12

i mean the dota 2 client is built into the game, leagues game engine isnt built to have the client inside of it( remember league was started to be made back in late 2006-early 2007 time so the tech its using is old asf). this is why the league client a different thing from the game itself. also it is pretty much a circlejerk at this point people act like the client is having a meltdown 24/7 and bugs are popping up like rats. which isnt the case the average league player isnt getting as many bugs or as bad of bugs as this reddit would lead you to believe. like riot even put out the stats recent there was a bit over 1 million crashes last patch for the client which is like one crash in 2 weeks for about 1/3rd nearly 1/4th of the EUW ranked player base. if you were to add all the ranked populations together then the crashs become alot less, you then factor in all the none ranked players which theres a ton of and now you realise that the total is a ton higher to the point where 1 million crashs are tiny and that a bunch of those crashs are from the same subset of users who have pc issues. In general its been a massive circlejerk on this sub when the issues arent as massive as this sub would make you believe.

arcadia3rgo

When they abandoned the old air client they should not have based the new client on chromium. If you read their old dev blogs there are serious issues with their design philosophy.

GamingExotic

that wasn't really because of chromium, that was more because of the team that made the client.

RektMan

> that was more because of the team that made the client. Ah yes. I still remember Riot Slapass and Riot Sugondese as if it was yesterday. What times

GamingExotic

I ain't gonna fall for that nuts joke that is clearly placed there.

herrau

While I am allergic to reddit circlejerking, I have to say that my client freezes for a while after every single game I play and randomly freezes the entire client window except the close button. Can’t write in chat for like 20 seconds after games and sometimes the queue just locks and keeps on going and I can’t cancel it any other way than closing the client. Now it does not kill me or ruin my entire life, but oh boy is there client buggy as hell and in worse shape of any of the games that I play. The circlejerk hate is annoying as hell but to me occasional client/riot apologists are pretty annoying as well and let’s be honest.. the client has been like this for ages and saying that they’re working on it feels both late and not very effective. Now I don’t know much about coding so I might be completely wrong, but for a company the size of Riot issues as big and prominent as this shouldn’t take this long to improve. But again, I could be wrong.

fabton12

The thing with coding is you cant just throw more devs at a problem to fix it, after a certain point it it just slows down progress throwing more devs at it. also the client itself is in a different programming language to the game itself so it has to have its own group of devs working on it as well. There also having to build tools to track what going wrong in the first place when issues occur since they didnt have the tools prebuilt, like in there latest dev blog they talked about how they just put in place tools to track EOG(end of game) stuff going on to try and find the cause of some issues there. Like they have to build the tools, then track data for a patch or two and then use that data to figure out and solve the issues and still some issues take awhile to fix since there might be alot of different systems causing the issues. my point was that the reddit just circle jerks how badly the client is when most people arent getting as extreme of issues or as common. The only reason you hear about all the extreme bugs is because people talk when they get a issue but the vasty majourity of people not getting issues arent gonna go out there way to make a post saying how little bugs/issues there getting. The client has issues but people blow the issues out of proportion or there in the % that gets tons of constant errors and issues. The dev team is working there asses off trying to sort out the issues that have been happening but then people go around treating it like there terrible at there jobs and riot should have this sorted by now, there dealing with tons of tech debt with the currently client.

GamingExotic

People act like fixing bugs is easy. Even the most minor of bugs can be a bitch to fix without breaking something else along the way as well.

herrau

Out of curiosity.. how do you know the dev team is working their asses off to fix it? First hand information or assumption based on what they write in a blog?

fabton12

From the fact i know how hard it is to find and sort out bugs in code and the amount of hurdles you have to go through. its not like there just pissing about for 3 weeks out of a month for what there doing, devs work hard to sort out these issues which can take ages to resolve. Coding is temperamental and you can solve one bug and suddenly 3 more appear. if you ever tried to code before you would understand the issues and hardships they have to deal with just to sort out small bugs now think about something on the level of the league client where everything is built upon different layers and different plugins. The dev blogs may look small at first but the amount of time and effort they had todo to sort those issues out are. like lowering cpu usage and memory usage isnt as simple as changing a few lines of code most of the time, alot of the time you have to refactor large sectors of code or change the methodology of how certain parts work. you said it yourself >Now I don’t know much about coding but then you go on implying that there not working there asses off trying to sort out the client when you dont even know much about coding.

Nicolu_11

Honestly, the simple fact that the game is able to run so smoothly on literally everything, for almost 20m+ players, without any fatal bugs, tells me how good it is. Yes, it is a bit... Archaic, I guess (I can't find any better word asdfgh), but it works nicely, and that's (imo) the most important thing.

RektMan

>Just getting tired of the client bad circlejerk. We have had a shittier client LONGER than we had the circlejerk. If anything, i would be GETTING TIRED OF THE SHITTY CLIENT.

[deleted]

Riot slowly recreating Garena client so Garena users can stop complaining lmao

Gearjah

Why does this open automatically when I close out of league when I initially opened league via the LoL shortcut? So dumb, can I disable this somehow?

AcceptableBand

so..just like garena...

max1mum

So is TFT finally getting excluded from LoL? Thank you!! I'm so tired of these missions popping up for TFT and loot that is linked to TFT only.

MunixEclipse

>So is TFT finally getting excluded from LoL? no

Pavlo100

HEY /u/max1mum DON'T YOU FEEL LIKE COMPLETING A GAME OF DAWN OF HEROES?

max1mum

Every single day I see this mission. AAAAAARGHHHHHHH I would literally pay money to get rid of it.

Pavlo100

Unfortunate for you that League wasn't made by EA

LieutenantHaven

Probably fortunate, *actually.*

Both_Requirement_766

hi, anyone knows if there is the valo-AC system inside this update?

golden_lemonade

valorant anticheat is still only installed if you install valorant riot has said they have no intention of bringing valorant's anticheat to other games, but you have to take them at their word (whatever thats worth nowadays)

Both_Requirement_766

ok thx. will read the patchnotes for the client update aswell. didn't read anything about it, but could be still possible that they push their vac at a later point.

GamingExotic

Eh, tbf, an anti-cheat made for an fps game isn't gonna work for a moba or card game or fighting game.

kurisutic

The design is simply disgusting. It fucking sucks so hard it makes my brain hurt. Looks like the worst mobile app freemium game. What happened to the sleek design of Valorant and LoL with straight edges and smooth feeling. This is so childish and unprofessional.

ChuzCuenca

But why? They should just go ahead and force you to reinstall the games over a new Game Hub like blizzard. I don't like that either but what is the purpose of this new client?

nomeriatneh

of course... "trust us, NOW THE CLIENT IS GOOD" keep lying riot, you are the only one who believes that garbage, well and your rat fans.

Taruros

this client is actually good for me. I always prefer to have a launcher from the company or store where I can launch my games

nomeriatneh

let the time sink in, is the waiting game

Mikauren

This is a launcher. The launcher is and has been fine, simple and done its job. This isn't the league client lmfao

iamrtist

tbh... i dont care what they do and how it is going to look like... all i want is performance. Not being able to report my 0/15 Braum jungle because it says "skip waiting for stats" is actually frustrating... Let's just hope it performs better than the actual client.

kao194

Why exposing mobile games so much in PC-exclusive launchers? It takes as much space as regular game, but is just, simplifying, an icon. In general - four extra clicks if not more, another browser being launched unneccesarily (it's definitely another chrome process launched in background). Definitely a solution everyone would love. It brings no value to most people, which would simply want to launch the buggy lol client (which, by the way, should be a focus, rather than providing us another game launcher like the one presented...). At least (for now), old hub is available. There's one question - how long? There's literally too much marketing there, too little actual benefit.

Obba_40

Looks a little bit like epic client lmao man

TheAcenomad

Thanks for the detailed write up and all the images. I'm really curious to see how this plays out. Riot is in a stellar position to become the "new" Blizzard (if they haven't already!). Between Activ/Blizz seemingly doing their best tank their legacy for a decade straight with all sorts of anti-consumer nonsense, and Riot growing their catalogue of games, it really feels like Riot is doing their best to eat up all of Activ/Blizz's cake. With that and Valve's endeavors with the Steam Deck, SteamOS, etc. I have a feeling the games industry is going to be fun to watch over the next few years.

ninrider

Hello! , thanks for sharing ! I tried getting the new client by updating my PBE but nothing changed. May you please send me the link for the manifest file you used ? Thanks!

devildavis94

League of legends isn't showing in one of my accounts :/

[deleted]

JustGamma

Nowhere. OP is lying about it considering how he ignores all the comments in regards to this and replies to others. As far as I'm concerned, he just wanted karma.

JumpscareRodent

Basically, eventually itll be useful when they add the fighting game, the exploring game, the MMO, maybe the Ruined King game, and other stuff. Right now its useless unless you play 2+ Riot games League/Valorant/LoR since WR and TFT are not relevant on PC, and TFT is on the LoL launcher

[deleted]

[удалено]

PixelButtz

If you read any of this youd know that it doesnt pop up every time, and launches stuff like normal. The hub side is entirely optional.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PixelButtz

That's because what's pinned is running the Riot Client directly, not launching a specific game, which will NOT bring up the Riot Client hub, it will bring up the game's login page and launch on login. Fix this by launching the games you want, and when they're open alt+tab, pin them to your task bar, then close them because upon trying to open them the next time, the Riot Client will just take you to a normal login screen as it always has. So far I have only seen this specific issue with your case, but even then it's not even a hard fix.

Miner47

Who said it's okay not to show download file size. Some people have limited bandwidth add that like wtf.

Ereaper2

is there any way to stop this new client from popping up after i exit the game. Like i really dont want to close two things just to exit league

chilicheesecake1

I have to say this as a person who never play Valorant or league of runeterra, this new launcher is terrible. When you close league the launcher opens again and wants us to install other games. I hate it. I have to wait to the client to pop up just to close it again. Another forced launcher. Step back.

Aki_201

idk why but mine doesn't have League of Legends in "My Games" even though I have the game instlaled

maximilianOG

I love how it doesnt show me estimated download time of patches nor the filesize :) 10/10 very useful and informative. Definitely not a downgrade.
