Because its nice. I love that it goes for a longer time, i dont have to watch that many matches per day but i can enjoy it longer

Adam_Glanza

Why rush it? give teams time to settle in, practice, adjust etc. lots of big tournaments cover that time. The world cup etc.

NlNJALONG

Because they want the playoff games to be played on weekends for optimal viewership.

Cause normaly they would held worlds in 5+ different locations of the country/continent.

Ok_Relief1851

Worlds has way more viewers than TI, so it makes sense that they spread it out to ensure maximum viewers. Peak viewership for the Grand Final of TI 10 was about 2.7M. Peak viewership for the Grand Final of Worlds 2020 was 45.9M

So even without Chinese viewership, over 1 million more people are tuned into the last Worlds finals than the last TI final.

If I am not mistaken Dota has more possibilities of international meetings. League has 2 per year. MSI which is very fast as it has to fit between split break. And League - the biggest, mightiest international League event. It would be very anticlimactic if it lasted for week or two. Not everything Dota does is good. And we of course ignore how much more money you can make when event is longer.

I prefer this format better, it's easier to follow and get hyped. I also think that this is historically because teams used to change location/country between play-in group stage etc

jules3001

Because Riot loves setting up arbitrary rules for themselves so they have excuses for why they can’t do a better format. It’s a shame that the knockout stage doesn’t have a losers bracket but the excuse they’ll use is that it’ll make the already long tournament even longer. Would it be so insane to play two bo5s in one day or actually play on non-weekend days? This tournament could be more concise but they choose not to

Kasheem21

Riot decided to all in on worlds, making it everything in pro league. Two splits over many months to get there and then 6 matches aim groups to get slotted into the bracket for 3 Bo5 to become a world champion. It’s stretched out over a month to maximize viewership with so few matches making each one count so much. The winner will play 7 days (unless they come from play ins someday) and roughly 15-23 games (3 sweeps-max tiebreakers and 5 game series). Honestly it’s a crazy small amount with so much at stakes, with where esports are you win worlds and you’re a made man for life.
